MBP forgets screen brightness settings?

Since I have installed Leopard my MBP "forgets" where I had the screen brightness set once it's restarted. It defaults to just below half, even if I have it on full when I shut it down. Am I missing a setting?

The screen changes brightness so that when you are in a dark room it doesn't blind you. this works in conjunction with the keyboard lighting up so you can see it.
What you can do is that you can manually set the brigthness when you are in a darker room to brighter or dimmer, and the machine will remember that setting under those conditions, as I have found out. Not sure if it will let you have full brightness in a dark room unless you uncheck the setting that controls this in displays preferences as someone else pointed out.
Same applies to keyboard brightness settings. If you don't want the keyboard fully lit up, you can dim it manually in the dark, and it will remember that setting next time.
Once you get used to it and can control it, it is the way to go, IMO.

  • MBP 2011 Screen brightness changing regardless of the ambient light

As stated in the subject my brand new MBP 2011 screen brightness changes on its own, yes i know about the ambient light sensor, but my screen is going from med brightness all the way to minimum brightness even though the ambient light is constant. yes I know i can turn it off, but why build in an ambient light feature that just makes the screen go to mimimum brightness when in a well lit room??
or do i have a faulty one??

I too have this problem on my spanking new MacBook Pro.  Called AppleCare and they said they weren't aware of this issue.
Meanwhile, this is my 1st mac.  Had it for a few weeks now.  Decided to open iTunes for the 1st time.  The whole MacBook Freezes, no mouse interactivity, reboot required.  This happens EVERY time I start iTunes which I no longer do.  Apparently it's a known issue which Apple has patched(unsuccessfully).  But hey c'mon, I mean iTunes?  This is one of the core apps which SHOULD be tested extensively against the hardware. When you consider Apple PROVIDES the hardware, this is simply unacceptable.  Unbelievable even.  I simply can't believe how poor this is from a major company.  But hey my MacBook Pro LOOKS GOOD right, so who cares if it's a technically malfunctioning piece of junk.
Here's my theory.  Is part of Apple's patch deliberately reducing screen brightness without user authorisation when the MacBook starts to overheat, all because they know they've been incompetent/negligent with their QA testing and the hardware can't handle the software?  If so, why have users not been informed?
I'm from Australia and we have this so-so comedian called Chris Lily who fans have taken to calling a genius, the joke amongst non-fans being the word genius has been dumbed down over the years to be almost meaningless.   Anyway, maybe a certified Apple 'genius' can explain the reasoning for the apparently deliberate brightness reductions?

  • MBP 2011, Screen Brightness in Energy Saver mode issue?

    hi,
got a new 2011 MBP 17', setup dim in energy saver mode & plugged in an external DVI monitor via Thunderbolt port.  energy mode dims & blanks LCD but the external screen does not.  It does however then turn off and lock when display sleep is reached.
anyone any ideas if this is just a "feature of the new port" that we need to ask apple about or have i missed something?
FYI,  energy saver pref screen pops up only on 1 screen.  displays pref pops up on both but currently only the MBP LCD screen has a brightness and auto adj settings.  external screen just has resolutions & refresh rate options.
    thanks,
    Simon.

Nope - on my wife's MB (i.e. 13" MacBook, unibody/late 2008), there's no 'custom setting' or 'Details' when clicking on the menu bar battery icon. There is a shortcut to the Energy Saver preference pane, but no option to control brightness in that preference pane other than the checkbox I mentioned above. You can set timers for display sleep, etc., of course.
So, what I see on my MBP, what I see on my wife's MB, and what you're seeing on your MBP seem to be the same. If you have access to a MacBook, check again - if you find the setting your thinking of, post a screenshot...

  • Is there a way to save keyboard backlight and screen brightness settings?

It seems like my settings for the keyboard backlight and screen brightness reset to some sort of default after I don't use my macair for an extended period of time.  Is there a way to change these settings so it always stays at what it was last left on?

Are you making the changes through System Preferences?  If not, try that and they should hold.

  • T410 screen brightness settings not restored after sleep

I have a T410 with the NVIDIA graphics option. When the machine wakes up from sleep (only tested on battery power), the screen brightness is always set at 0 regardless of what power policy setting I use. Even if I switch from power setting to power setting, the screen brightness still remains at 0.
This problem does not occur when the machine is first booted as switching power profiles will set the screen brightness to whatever is setup in the profile.
I am enable to increase the brightness using the keyboard but its frustrating to have to do it all the time. I do have the dim timer set on some of my power policies to kick in between 1-5 minutes.
Anybody else having the same problem or have any fixes for this?
I have updated all my drivers, BIOS, Windows Update etc. I have also tried to manually reinstall the power management driver, power management utility and the NVIDIA display driver without any change.

are you people using Thinkvantage Power Manager 3.20?

    hi evre
power management may cause that issue due to the application contains the system files that fn keys work.
can you try to un-install > restart your computer > re-install the power management first? if you can, please un-install power management in safe mode.

  • Windows 8.1 Update Causes Lost Brightness Settings / Screen is Dim

I updated from Windows 8 to 8.1 and the next day my screen went dim and I could not adjust it neither with the keyboard +/-, nor with the onscreen graphics dashboard, nor within the power settings.
    How do you fix it?

Sometimes Windows updates will break your graphics driver. That is because Intel and NVidia do not update their graphics drivers on the same schedule that Microsoft
updates Windows, and sometimes the updates are incompatible and cause the graphics driver to do wonky things. In my case that came in the form of lost brightness settings.
I searched these forums for a fix and I could not find one, so now that I know the answer, I am sharing it here.
How do you fix it? You have to reinstall the graphics driver. This is how I did it.
I found the graphics driver install file that was already on my computer and I ran it. It reinstalled the driver in about 5 seconds and my screen brightness functionality was restored.
Where is my graphics driver install file? On my computer it is here:
    D:driversVGAIntelx649.17.10.2932\Setup.exe
Yours is probably in a different but similar location depending on how it was installed and what brand it is, etc. I have a Lenovo
P400 touchscreen laptop with an Intel HD 4000 Graphics.

  • Can't Adjust Screen Brightness MBP 2010

Hi everybody, this issue is driving me nuts!
I've browsed all the sections on this forum and numerous threads and still no dice... Here's my issue:
-I own an late 2010 MacBook Pro (iOS dev machine), which was working perfectly up to the point where I had to update to Mountain Lion 10.8.5
After the update, brightness control on the keyboard is gone (F1 and F2 are duds), also no manual control anywhere else...what gives??
I've done all the SMC reset mumbo-jumbo without any avail....seriously, it sounds like the old fix for windows 98..."just reboot and it will be fine...or not". I also won't accept "go to a genious bar" as answer, since that doens't exist on these parts and any "procedure" over a apple device will take over a month to be done with.
    So my questions are:
1-What where they thinking when they removed the frigging slider from settings?? Do they take us for some sort of idiots that can't be trusted to handle their brightness without using the keyboard?
2-Why can't I change the brightness on my $2500 laptop after a software update? Pray, do explain how this has come to be?
3-Is there any command (using terminal) that I can run to permanently set the brightness level or just to, you know...change it?
4-I'd like to scale this issue with a formal complaint towards apple, I find this to be unacceptable as a customer and I'd like to give them a piece of my mind. Can someone point me out on the proper path to do this?

  • Fluctuating screen brightness on MBP?

I got my MBP (i7, 15.6", Lion) in June and love it.  Over the last month, however, I've noticed the screen frequently fluctuating in brightness, from "normal" to super bright over a 2-3 second period, then back to normal again.  It doesn't get really dark except,of course, when it is about ready to go to sleep.  The graphics remain clear and sharp.  The computer is not being taxed with a heavy application load (only have a browser open).
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Never mind! It resolved itself. I think.
It took three reboots, then the brightness was back to normal again.
I don't know if this had anything to do with it, but at my third reboot, at the gray loading screen (where the brightness still worked), I hit the F2 (brightness up) key like crazy for about 1 minute. They OS X loaded as normal, with the usual screen brightness.

  • 15" mbp forgetting brightness setting

When I restart the mbp, it turns the brightness all the way up and I have to turn it back down or hunt for my sunglasses. This computer is REALLY bright.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Bye Bye Screen Brightness Buzz?

I noticed many updates today, so decided to install them all.
Then out of no-where pops up this new Firmware as well.
Just toying around, I take my computer off power - immediately dimming the screen, and to my surprise... no more screen buzzing.
I've been playing with the screen settings for 10 minutes now, no buzz/hum... I'm kind of reluctant to restart!
Any one else have improvement from the screen brightness noise issue with the updated software/firmware? Am I the only lucky one?
I don't want to give a false sense of security, but this was the only noise problem that I found disturbing because it was VERY loud. Now it's very very dull, if not totally gone. I hope this update helps you guys too, and is indication that apple has gotten very serious about addressing these concerns.
EDIT: Since restarting, and playing with the tilt of my screen, the sound did reproduce, but not as loud as before.
Previously, and currently, to make the hum go away I just have gently pull the screen forward until there is slight resistance on the hinge (but not enough to move the lid). This stops the hum completely. Also if you gently press down on the grey bar where the wireless components are, you can also temporarily lose the noise.
So I apologize for getting any hopes up, it seems that it's still there, but can be slightly dimmed by the updates. If not, try what I said, gently push on the hinge area (rubber) area, and when you hit it right, the noise is completely gone.

Apple fixes this noise by replacing your display
inverter. You should ask them to do it if you want
    the noise fixed. Its hardware.
Despite telling the AASP 3 times the display inverter needed replacing, they changed the logic board in my MBP. Now they say Apple is shipping the same inverter part number as what's in the machine so they need to contact Apple to find out what to do.. Grr....

  • MacBook Pro 13" screen brightness

I just bought a 13" MacBook Pro and find the screen brightness and contrast is much less than expected. It basically has to be turned up full on AC to be acceptable, which is very unexpected, since I am typing on a 16 month old MacBook Air now that is about the same at 80% of screen brightness. The contrast is less pronounced on the new machine, too, and the notion of 60% more color saturation seems faulty. I am going to return it and see if the Apple Store thinks this is normal or a faulty screen. Am I being unreasonable to think the new MBP screen should be at least equivalent to the original Air screen?
    Message was edited by: MacBook

Yes, I agree that there is something different about the two displays. I conducted my own side-by-side comparison -- in the same room lighting, and also switching the places of the two machines -- and found at any given setting, the 13" MacBook Pro was darker than the MacBook Air. Furthermore, when I first started the machine, the MBP's keyboard backlighting would not go off, no matter the lighting. Then, when I went to make these comparisons, the MBP's keyboard backlighting would not come on.
This linked picture is a composite from two pictures taken in succession in the same lighting and angles, just as they came out of the camera, showing the relative brightness of the two. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2547/3844348963e76728bce2o.png
So, I packed up the machine for a trip to the Apple Store and either an exchange or a return.

  • Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Problems (Switchable Graphics, Screen Brightness Adjustment, etc.)

Hi guys! I hope you can help me with this.
My laptop is a Lenovo U400 bought last April. I upgraded it yesterday to Windows 8 Pro.
The Upgrade Assistant detected incompatibilities on the following softwares (I'll be mentioning only those I had problems with after the update.)
    -AMD Catalyst Install Manager
    -Catalyst Control Center
    -Lenovo Energy Management
    -Cypress Trackpad
After the update, the following problems occurred
-Windows kept prompting me about the incompatibility of Catalyst Control Center and Lenovo Energy Management
-When I check the Device Manager -->Display Adapters, My AMD Radeon HD 6470M was changed to HD 7400M and has an exclamation point on it indicating a problem. When check Properties it says, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
-I can't manage switchable graphics because the AMD Radeon driver has been stopped by the OS and Catalyst Control Center doesn't work. It says, "Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Control Center."
-My touchpad works but does not support multitouch functions.
-Screen brightness adjustment stopped working both on hotkeys and Power Options.
I tried the following actions to fix the problems:
-Downloaded the new softwares from Lenovo Support but the Catalyst Control Center and Cypress Trackpad still doesn't work. I also tried installing driver software from the AMD site but it still didn't work. [FAILED]
-I tried to use the Cypress Trackpad software for U300s/e and it fixed the problem with the touchpad [FIXED]
-Installed the Energy Management software for Windows 8 but when I click the 'Optimized Battery Health' button, it keeps reverting back to 'Maximum Battery Life'. [PARTIALLY FIXED]
-Resorted to 3rd party software to fix the Switchable Graphics (Catalyst 12.11 Beta from leshcatlabs.net) and it fixed the switchable graphics problem as well as the Catalyst Control Center problem. This is temporary until a working solution or update is available. [TEMPORARILY FIXED]
-All actions trying to fix the Screen brightness adjustment didn't work. [FAILED]
Please do help me on this. Thanks in advance!!!

Yes I own U400 too and I'm using it now. To many forums been read, can't remember which one. Basically, u have to clean AMD and Intel drivers that come along with Win 8. Why? Because the Win8 driver database will lead the device ID "DEV_6760" (if you looking at display adapter device properties) to HD 7400 series instead of HD 6470M, again why? At the bigining only the HD 7400 series already "certified" by Microsoft, while the 6470M out of somewhere. Current CCC (or else) + 6470 drivers, contain also driver for 7400 series in same packages (at least until now, hopefully near future they will release an update). So you can gues where the windows will lead to? Yes 7400 series (certified one). This will explain also why the Energy Management didn't work to= "missing identifier" or we can say "hardware not match".
You have to find a "fix" driver which contain only HD 6470M and install it manually trhu "Have Disk" option, after you claan all AMD and Intel driver. If you success, then install the CCC from Lenovo Support and from ATI ( I use 12.11 Beta8 Net4 CCC - this is a must), but remember to unchek the AMD Display driver when you install both CCC, and leave the rest checked including Intel Component. Then you can download install anything you want =).
Leschat's driver did't work on my and "harm" the system. Believe it or not, I found the AMD 6470M standalone driver on HP website. They call it "SoftPack", which actually contain CCC software.
It's quite tricky thing, that's why not everyone willing to try. But I think it's worth to try, as the risk is not too deep, just backup anything befor you do it. Cheer

  • Flashcards for screen brightness no longer work after BIOS upgrade

I have a Toshiba Satellite T135D/1320S laptop, and last night I upgraded the BIOS to v1.90 under the recently released recall notice.  AFter installing the BIOS, however, the Flashcard brightness controls no longer work. Whenever I press FN-6 or FN-7, the screen brightness Flashcard pops up and the toggle on the slider bar moves back and forth, but the brightness of the screen does not change.
I have disabled and re-enabled the Flashcards as suggested in a separate forum, and I've also downloaded the most recent display driver (AMD display driver v8.615).  Neither effort corrected the problem.
    Anyone have any other suggestions?

    Satellite T135D-S1320
Sometimes it helps to reset the machine. With the battery and AC adapter removed, close the Power switch for half-a-minute. Re-attach those, press the Power button to turn the computer on, and then immediately press the F2 key while the Toshiba logo is displayed. Press F9 to restore the BIOS default settings, press F10, and then select Yes (Exit Saving Changes). The computer will restart.
Another things to try is reinstalling the TVAP.

  • Windows 8.1 kills screen brightness control

I have a touch smart 23 computer that came with windows 8.0. An auto upgrade to 8.1 caused the screen brightness control to stop working and the screen stays on super bright. I could not get a response on how to fix so I had to re-install 8.0 which fixed the problem. I set the system to not upgrade without my approval and yet it did it again last week (about 4 or 5 months later). When I have to reinstall 8.0, I have to re-install several primary programs as there are no restore points left except back to factory settings. Question one is - has there been a fix installed on windows 8.1 that will again let me control the brightness on my screen? If not, question 2 is how did the update override my setting to not allow updates to install without my approval. I have a full day of re-installs that I don't want to have to do a third time.

    Hi:
You probably have to install the W8.1 graphics driver for your specific model.
Normally when you can't control the screen brightness, that means the graphics driver isn't installed.
As for your second question, that I do not know.
