MBP freezes after Screen Capture (Cmd+Shift+4)

When I try to do a screen capture, my MBP is freezing (rotating wheel) after the 2nd or 3rd screen capture. This is new after I upgraded to 10.6.6
Any hints?
thnx
viTus

I don't think there is a bug for Apple to fix, as far as I can tell. I've taken plenty of screenshots using cmd-shift-4 since the update (I actually did a number just a few days ago), and my system is working just fine, as always. I also haven't heard any other reports of this kind of problem. So, the question is, what's going wrong with your systems?
Since it's happening on two different machines, my inclination would be to blame third-party software you've got installed. Try [starting up in Safe Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455]... does the problem still happen then? Safe mode disables third-party software that may be loading at startup/login, so if the problem goes away in safe mode, then it's just a matter of figuring out what software is causing the problem.
Also, are you using any other third-party hardware, especially input devices, with both MacBooks when you're taking the screen shots? If so, try disconnecting all of it and use just the built-in keyboard and trackpad. If the problem goes away then, it's probably a hardware incompatibility.

  • My mac stops working after Screen capture (Cmd+Shift+4)

    Hi all,
this is really a serious issue!
After upgrading to 10.6.6, I have found a bug with the Screen capture feature.
After several screen shots (CmdShift4) OSX is hanging. You can move the mouse, but everything else is frozen.
I've tested it prior to the upgrade with 10.6.5 -> no problem
I've tested it with 10.6.6 on 2 different Macbook Pros (different models) and both have the same issue with 10.6.6
    Please apple, fix this bug!!
    thnx

  • A1211 - MBP freezes after a few seconds with Airport WIFI enabled

My MBP freezes after a few seconds [requires a hard reboot] when I enable my Airport card. I have tried three airport cards with the same results. Any ideas?
    Occurs with 10.6.8 and 10.7.5.
    Works fine with WIFI dongle.

  • Bell Sound, after Screen Capture

When I do a screen capture (Shift/Cmd/3 or 4), in addition to the camera shutter sound, about 3 seconds later, i now hear a bell.
I've had the MacBook for 3+ years, and I believe this is something recent.
After the keystrokes, I get the shutter sound, about 1 second later, the icon appears, and about 2 seconds after that, the bell.
This is on both my MacBook13, and MacBook Pro (10.6.8)
Can I eliminate the bell sound, and keep just the shutter sound ?

  • 2010 mbp freezes after downloading from the App Store

My mid-year 2010 mbp running OS X 10.6 freezes after I download apps from the App Store. Sometimes this freezing is accompined by very high volume fan noise coming from the back. I have to power the mbp off, and sometimes it starts up again just fine-- no hanging and no error messages. Other times it gets hangs at start up or several minutes after logging in, and I just have to keep restarting until it is no longer an issue. Generally the installed apps work perfectly fine.
Has anyone else ever had this issue or have any suggestions on how to fix it?

iOS applications can't be run on a computer.

  • Screen capture function (Shift-Command-3 or 4) doesn't work

When I try to do a screen capture using the built-in utility, I hear the camera-click, but then get an error message saying the capture couldn't be completed because of this error: "unable to create type string". How do I fix this?
Note: I normally use Grab, but find having to convert tiffs to jpg/png annoying; I was hoping to use the built-in screen grab instead.
This problem has been happening for months, through many boots/reboots. I've repaired permissions to no avail. Any ideas?
    Thx!

Lyssa is correct try restarting the Mac first, I always assume that users do this to try to fix anomalies.
Creating a new user is fairly easy and non disruptive to the Mac or the way you log in. You can simply delete the user when finished troubleshooting or keep it for later troubleshooting.
To create a new account (just to let you know how to do it).
    1. Open Sys/Prefs/Account (yes accounts sorry I was thinking Tiger OS).
    2. Click on the Lock at the bottom left of the window.
    3. Put in your password (which should be the admin account).
    4. Now the + add user button should no longer be greyed out, select the + button.
    5. Give the user a name, shortname, and password. Then press Create Account.
    6. Select the Keep Automatic Login when prompted.
    7. Exit out of Sys/Prefs
Now to log in to the user, go to the blue Apple menu at top left corner of Desktop, Select Log off "User". You'll be prompted with a log in selection screen. Select the newly created user, enter the password then test the Screen shots.
    To delete the user.
    1. Open Sys/Prefs/Accounts
    2. Unlock as you did previously.
    3. Select the newly created user then press the - Delete User button.
    4. When prompted, select the "Delete the home folder" option then press OK. And your done.

  • MBP Freezes after login

Used Firefox, when suddenly the computer was unresponsive.. so had to hard boot.
Now when i startup it freezes after approx. 20 sec. after the login is shown.
If i don't login the computer freezes at the login, and if i login finder freezes.
There is no problem when starting in "safe mode"...
Anyone have a solution to what i can do??
    Regards
    Jens

I had the same issue as all of you guys. Here is what really worked for me and though of sharing with you
Just as you could before, you can boot into Yosemite’s Recovery partition by holding down Command-R at startup, and in the OS X Utilities window that eventually appears, click Reinstall OS X, and then click Continue. This launches the OS X installer, which will download a fresh copy of Yosemite and install it on your startup volume.
Alternatively, if you no longer have the original Yosemite installer that you downloaded from the Mac App Store, you can get another copy by selecting App Store from the Apple menu, clicking on the Purchases link, and clicking Download next to the OS X Yosemite entry.
If the word Download doesn’t appear next to the installer, it means that the App Store believes you have a working copy of the installer already on your Mac. You should locate that copy and if you don’t want to use it—because it’s now a couple of point-releases old, for example—either compress it or remove it from your drive. Once you do, you should be able to download a fresh copy from the Purchases page.
The reinstallation might take up to 8 hours. After the reinstalling the OS I have no issues anymore !!! Hope this will work for you too !
    All the best !

  • MacBook Pro Freezing After Screen Replacement

I recently took my MBP in to get the screen replaced due to a screen separation issue. When I got it back it froze every now and then, but it kept continuing. Everytime I restart the computer after a freeze it will freeze up sooner and sooner. At first I thought it was a RAM issue since it particularly did it while watching videos, so I bought new RAM and it continued to freeze. Tested the new and the old RAM, but they were fine. I took it to the Genius Bar and the guy said it was a failing harddrive. Got a new harddrive upgraded to Lion and it is still freezing. I asked if something could have gone wrong when the screen was replaced and he assured me no and even if something had gone wrong they wouldn't cover it unless the actual screen was broken.
If I leave the computer off for a day it will take about 30 min before the 1st freeze, then after restart about 15 min, then 10 min, then 5 min until it will only log in then freeze.
Any guesses as to what could be causing the freezing and if it would be worth fixing as this MBP needs a new battery, a new drive (since the drive is on loan), and has the flickering screen issue?

    Screen Replaced Jan 8, 2012

Thanks for the reply. As an update, I took it into the Apple store again and it froze while they were trying to run the test. This time the guy said it was covered by the repair warrenty. After 2 weeks without a computer because something was wrong with the graphics cards they called me back and said they were just going to give me a late 2011 mid-range MBP. So I currently have a brand new MBP with no issues
Yeah... 3.5 years and they just release that fix for flickering screens. I hope it works for everyone. I know some people had some major issues with it.

  • MBP freezes after 10.4.11 and I can't get through to AppleCare

This is beyond ridiculous. Since applying the 10.4.11 update, my MBP always locks up after waking from sleep. There has been no exception since updating. I kept it turned off for about 24 hours, then used it all afternoon without letting it sleep and didn't have a single freeze. Sure enough, the first time I closed the lid to let it sleep, it locked up within seconds of waking up. This was happening spradically prior to the 10.4.11 update, but now it's rendering my MBP unuseable.
Yes, I have AppleCare and I tried calling Apple twice last week. Both times, I got cut off. Both times, I could barely understand the Indian trying to help me, and one got snippy with me when I had to keep asking him to repeat himself. Neither time did I actually get to speak with a technician. One of those times I got a recorded message telling me that Apple was closed for the holiday and to call back during normal business hours. Friday wasn't a holiday (at least not in this country) and I was calling during normal business hours for THIS country, but perhaps not for India. I've never experienced any trouble getting AppleCare support via telephone in the past, even on Sundays.
I've run Apple Hardware Test and TechTool Deluxe, neither of which reports any drive problems. The nearest Apple Store is an hour's drive from here. Apparently, I have one of the Seagate drives recently found to be defective. All I want to know is whether or not I should let Apple replace the drive with one that isn't defective.
I'm at a loss here. I'm paying for AppleCare, but can't get through to a comprehensible English speaker capable of answering that very simple question. I can't let my MBP sleep because it'll lock up upon waking. I can't find any way to send feedback to Apple about the unacceptable experience trying to get through to support last week. Is no one accountable for anything these days? And to think I bought an iPhone last week too!

Here is what I think may be the relevant portion of my system.log file. I've had no luck at all finding someone willing to tell me how to parse log files to troubleshoot errors. The freeze happened right about Nov 25 22:00:00. Note the times at the beginning of each line.

  • Please Help! - MBP freezing after EFI 2.2 firmware update

Hey guys. I'm hoping someone understands whats happening with my 2011 13" MBP (corei5, 4gb ram, 750 gig HDD)
I updated the computer with EFI Firmware 2.2 and the most recent security update a few days ago.
My computer will boot to my username fine.
It immediately begins INDEXING (***!?) even though that obviously isn't needed.
My HDD spins like crazy and I notice in activity monitor 3 things: Finder and MDWorker will user over 100% of my CPU, my RAM is completely used down to 3MB free, and my hard drive free space is going down slowly as i leave the computer on.
Nothing will open, constant beach balls, the longer I leave the comp on the worse it gets.
My fans will run on high to cool down the computer which is obviously working very hard.
I have tried re-installing EFI 2.2 (didn't work), I have tried going back to 2.1 but Lion says its not compatible.
I have re-set the PRAM, no luck.
I have repaired disk permissions, no luck.
The Guest account boots up fine
The HDD is fine because it boots up in the same time as always and runs guest account fine, and my account for the first minute or two fine.
Does anyone know WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? It's driving me nuts. Thanks for your help in advance.
    Dan

My 2011 17" MacBook Pro was freezing up to 20 or more times a day after I installed the 2.2 firmware.  I created a new user account and even new partitions with 10.6.8 and 10.7.1 installed and they all would freeze with no other software installed.  I reset the SMC and PRAM.  Repaired the permissions and disk.  Nothing helped.
Today I took it to the local Apple store (100 miles away lol) and of course they couldn't reproduce the problem in the limited time they had but they gave me a new machine so I can get back to work.  I'm still restoring from a backup so I have no idea how it will run but so far it's behaving and it is running from a CCC version of the drive that was in my old laptop and it has been solid.
The lesson I learned is that I am going to update to 2.1 and skip the 2.2 firmware.
BTW - Props to Alex @ the Apple store for all his help.

  • Unibody MBP freezing after new hard drive

Hey all, I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2009 Unibody that I replaced the stock 320 GB Hard Drive with a 750GB 7200 RPM Western Digital drive a few months back. Ever since I swapped the drive, my computer has been experiencing random freeze ups in SL (10.6.8) and Windows 7 Pro.  I'll just be using the computer, surfing the net in Chrome and listening to iTunes, and my music will stop playing and I can still move the mouse, but Chrome becomes unresponsive, and if I go down to the dock, the dock will freeze in place, but the mouse is still movable. After a few seconds, it goes back to normal. When I installed the new drive I just used Carbon Copy Cloner and WinClone to transfer everything over.  I have verifyed and repaired permissions over and over again, and a "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility says the volume appears to be OK. The only thing I have not tried is starting with the SL disk and trying a "repair disk". Does this sound like It may be an issue with the Hard Drive physically, or with the clone of SL? Has anyone had a similar issue? I can try booting it up tomorrow night with the AHT disk and testing everything and then try a repair disk and see if that helps.  It's completely updated with the latest firmware updates.

I've never heard of anyone else having problems with this drive in a MBP.
Do a search and you'll find a lot of people have had the same/similar issues. Some have promoted firmware updates from the manufacturer, some have used HDAPM http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/, some have claimed that formatting the HD in an external enclosure has resolved the issue, some have tried jumpers, some believe it is linked to the SMS, some believe that only HDs purchased from Apple have the proper firmware installed, there's probably an alien theory out there too.

  • MBP Freezes after new battery installed

I have an original MBP, and the replacement battery I got after the recall, wouldn't hold a charge and would shut my computer off by itself while still holding a charge.
The problem is this: I shelled out the $$ for a new battery, but the new battery makes my computer FREEZE forcing me to hard boot it. Every single time with the new battery in, after about 15 or 20 minutes of usage, I have to shut down and reboot.
Any ideas anybody? Thanks in advance!

They sent me a new battery and it does the exact same thing..
I took it to the apple store, the genius told me she couldn't do anything about it and told me to send it in to be diagnosed. :/ I'm going to try to reinstall the whole computer from a time machine backup and see if the new battery works, otherwise... I guess I'll have to return the battery for a refund!

  • MBP freezes after Mavericks install restart

I have tried to install Mavericks onto my MBP mid/late 2007 model. However after what seems ot be a smooth installation process with no reported errors the Mac freezes when it gets to the the Apple logo.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM. Booted into safe mode. Checked the drive with Disk Utility and Drive Genius. Tried the installer multiple times. Re-installed the factory ram (upgraded last year to 6 gis ram using an OWC kit).
Now I am restoring to Mountain Lion via Tim Machine.
Foot Note: This initially happend, same way, a few weeks ago when trying to update Mountain Lion to the latest update. So perhaps something was introduced in Mountain Lion to prep for Mavericks that initiated this problem.
    Please help!

I have a MBP late 2007 and I tried to upgrade to Mavericks... Well, a four days nightmare before giving up and going back to my Lion.
    This is what I tried:
1.- Just upgrade, as I have always done. Result: after the system has been upgraded, a few seconds after Mavericks has booted up, the computer just freezes.
2.- I did a clean install of Mavericks telling it to transfer my stuff from a Time Machine backup after the first boot. Result: the same, a few seconds after Mavericks has booted up and my account is being loaded, the computer freezes.
3.- Another clean install of Mavericks, but this time telling it to transfer my account. After the information transfer is done, the system boots up and I start using it, it seems to be working, and I start reinstalling the software I need: VMWare, iWork, Aperture, iLife, Steam... Everything is going fine, the computer seems to be fine. The last piece of software I installed is Adobe CS5, then, I keep on working with the computer trying to install fink and the software I usually use... and then bang! The computer freezes again.
4.- Clean install of the system in an external USB harddrive, transferring everything from a Time Machine backup. When it is done, the computer is incredibly slow, but that's normal, because it is USB 2.0 on a regular HDD, and it's been a while since I installed a Crucial M4 SSD in the MBP. This time, I can use the system for a while and the computer doesn't freeze.
I check if it could be a problem with the SSD, I am using a Crucial M4 512GB SSD with firmware version 000F, so I updated the firmware to the latest version, but the problem is the same, the system freezes.
Additional information: My wife has a MBP 13'' (mine is 15'') with the same SSD, firmware version 040H, and the same software (Adobe CS5, VMWare, Aperture, etc.), but her computer is perfectly happy with the upgrade.
I couldn't find anything useful on the system logs, I also tried to boot up in single user mode, safe mode, reset the PMU or SMC (command+option+P+R)... yet no solution. The only thing I could do was to fall back to my dear Lion, that works perfectly, with its defects, of course, but it is running.
I'd really like to be able to upgrade to Mavericks, because the little time I could use it, I got the impression that it manages the resources on the machine in a better way. And, if I want to develop for iOS 7 and Mac OS X, there is no other way than having it.
Any ideas? May it be the graphic card (my computer is a late 2007 MBP 15'', that already got the motherboard replaced because of the known graphic card defect)?

  • Freezing After Screen Saver

My Mac mini is becoming unresponsive and freezing pretty much whenever I return from the screen saver state. The only way I know of getting it out of this state is to turn on my external hard drive then turn it off, but i don't like to do that, CAN YOU HELP ME!!!???

The ScreenSaver Pane on my MacBook was hung on creating a Mosaic of the jpg's in the Picture folder. I removed the jpg's from the Picture Folder, restarted and the Pane was operable. I put the jpg's back in the Pictures folder and now I use a random setting and all is ok.

  • MBP Crashing after screen replacement

Heres the thing.. my 15" MBP was working like a charm, rightup until I brought it in to fixed. All the tech. did was replace the screen due to a lot of dead pixels, now for some reason my Toast 7.0 and Apeture always crashes for no reason at all. I'm just trying to make an MP3 CD for the car. I can't even get to the point of burning the CD it dies while i'm sorting the files. Aperture 1.1 Crashs for no reason at all. Ijust open it and leave it running, or make an attempt to flip through 3 or more pics and it crashs also. Just to put the cherry on top of the sunday, I can't empty my trash, it always comes back with "locailzed.rsrc" in use...
Sorry fro the book guys and girls, but can someone help me please! Thanks
