MBP freezes when connected to VGA projector

My MacBook Pro (15" 2.4Ghz SR, 4Gb) freezes when connected to a VGA projector, doesn't matter whether the DVI-VGA adapter is connected to cable first or last. Boot time while connected to the projector is also inordinately long. I have seen this happen a number of times specifically with other Santa Rosa MBPs.
I haven't called Apple yet on this and I suspect it will require a firmware update to fix; is this a known issue (and is it known to apple?)
thanks

Just to update this thread with what I've posted elsewhere:
On my machine this problem only happens if the computer has been put to sleep before being connected to a projector. That is, put to sleep after being booted but before connection to the computer. It can be connected after booting without sleep. Once it has been successfully connected to a projector, it can be disconnected, put to sleep, awakened and reconnected with no problem.
I think that this "first sleep after boot" issue is what makes the occurrence of this problem so variable.
Some people just leave their computer on for long periods, only putting it to sleep when not using it. If they connected to a projector before putting it to sleep the first time they wouldn't see this problem.

  • MBP freezes when connected to internet

    Hi all,
My 2011 MBP has continually frozen when connected to the internet for going on 5 months now. Bizarrely, it is the only computer in the house that is affected, and it is only on this network that the problem occurs. When connected to other networks, the laptop functions as normal.
With regard to the freeze, I can still move the cursor around the screen (although it becomes a beachball), however any programs I have open become unresponsive and I am unable to open any new ones. This includes Finder. Further, I am unable to login when connected to my home network, instead stuck on the user login window (the part with the blue bar after I've logged in).
I'm somewhat reluctant to reimage it, and so any other ideas would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

  • MacBook Pro freezes when connected to LCD projector

I just bought this computer in January 2014 and it's running 10.9.4. I am so frustrated because every time I hook it up to the projector where I teach, it hangs and then eventually freezes entirely, prompting a hard reboot. I don't understand why it is doing this to me. I just used it at a conference in March and it didn't do this. But suddenly at this new school, it cannot deal with the projector. I have looked at previous threads with similar titles and they are unresolved. Any ideas?

here are some of the messages from my console at around the time it failed to connect and then froze.

  • MBP freezing when connecting to my Cinema Display

My MBP (mid-2010 i7) has been locking up when I connect it to my display via mini-display port.
Usually the MBP is in sleep mode and closed when I connect it.  The display will then show my laptop screen but locks up afterwards.  It also seems like this problem is progressively getting worse.
I've tried to change the options around thinking that perhaps this was related to graphics switching since I tend to plug in the power connection at about the same time.
    Any help/ideas?  Thanks.

    Similar problem here...my sitch:
External HD w/35GB of music, was only able to get on onto 80GB iPod using auto-sync. Trying to remount to load other music, photos, contacts, etc. but iTunes & iPod lock whenever I connect and then locks the PC. It's either trying to resync and then locking or just locking for some other reason. Tried holding Crtl/Alt while mounting, also tried connecting iPod & external HD and starting iTunes in all possible sequences but same result.
Despite taking a beating the iPod still has the music (knock wood) but I can't do anything else with it now. Any suggestions?
Is it me or does the proprietary sh*t b/w iTunes & iPod su*k a*s? Why can't the files just be transferred using explorer?

  • MBP freezes when connecting iPad 2 to MBP running Mavericks

Hi, following an upgrade to OS X Mavericks (this never used to be a problem), every time I connect my iPad 2 to my MBP the keyboard and trackpad becomes unresponsive and I would have to do a hard reboot. Any reason why this is and are there any fixes? Thanks!!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • RetinaDisplay MBP not displaying correctly connected to VGA Projector

I am not sure if this is a Mountain Lion issue or Retina MBP issue
    New MBP.
hooked it up to a VGA projector tonight ( Apple store folk told me to use the same minidisplayport adapter I used with my older MBP which did  fit the Thunderbolt port.
Monitor and Mac saw each other but my MBP did not project correct resolution or dimensions
MBP still seemed to think it was connected to my 27" monitor at home.
Is this an adapter issue? a MBP issue? a Mountain Lion issue
    Something was amiss
    Any ideas?

Doesn't work that way with the Retina display
    a)  I never had to select a resolution previously when connecting a VGA projector. My previous Mac auto adjusted its resolution
    b) The preference does not allow choices of resolution as in the past
Look at how differnt this preference is
If I chose Scaled I get a few choices of larger or smaler text.
There may be some options in the main menu bar which Ineed to look at when connecting a monitor ( based on some other posts elsewhere in this Apple discussion area.Dunno... I am sure I am overlookign something  but the old auto adjust is gone, I think

MBP Retina OS X Yosemite has distorted display when connected to Epson projector.  How do I fix this?

    Hello ATLawson,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that the display, after connecting to a projector, does not have the image quality you would expect. There may be a few different troubleshooting steps I would recommend in this situation. To begin troubleshooting, I would suggest reading over and working through the information in the attached article.

  • IPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to Computer

    Hi.
My iPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to my computer (Vista... yes... I know). I've got my iPod for over a year now and I've never had real trouble with it.
When I plug it in (iTunes already running) my computer gives me the 'thumbthumb' noise because an USB thingamajib is connected to the computer. At this moment my iPod freezes and stays on. iTunes doesn't seem to find my pod. When I disconnect my iPod, it'll stay on (doesn't go energy safe mode) and stays frozen until the battery is empty. But by then, I've already lost my playing info (Which I really value).
    Pllllllease help me out her.

Someone has finally found a solution to this problem and i decided that i would spread the word around ... so here are the steps:
    1) Quit iTunes.
    2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.
    3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.
    4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".
    6) Go to <http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_21> and download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the diskimage and run the installer.
You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.
And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything.
*If you download the iTunes file from the "support.apple" link, and you can't open it, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/ and download "iTunes 8.2 for Windows: iTunesSetup.exe

  • Computer is crashing (freeze) when connecting my iPod Nano

    Hello,
my computer is crashing (freeze) when connecting my iPod Nano. I have a Pentium IV with windows XP Pro. Can anybody help me please.

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • Please help: My MBP freezes when not connected to a power supply.

When I am working on my MBP (specs below) without it connected to the power supply, it will freeze every once in a while. I have no option but to hold down the power button to do a hard restart – and then it takes a good five minutes to boot back up.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? It NEVER freezes when it is connected to power.
BTW – the MBP freezes randomly, *sometimes the battery will be near full, sometimes only half full,* so I don't think it has to do with the amount of power left in the battery.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

there is definitely a problem Apple must solve, i have this issue too.
here is a thread i started

  • Highlighter does not appear when connected to LCD projector in Keynote v2.2

I connected my iPad 3 to Apple VGA adapter (A1368) and I was doing a presentation with Keynote v2.2. In the presentation mode, I press-hold the screen, and the highlighter tools did not appear. I am sure I did the right thing to do to get the tools.
However, when I do not connect to the projector, I can get the highlighter tools in the presentation mode on my iPad screen.
    What is wrong?

Hi, have you run the hardware test from the osx install cd? That should eliminate the 'bad video card' if the MBP tests OK.
