MBP frequently slows down and sounds like an aircraft taking off

I have the original MBP with the following: OS X 10.5.6, Processor: 2.16Ghz Intel Core Duo, Memory: 2GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, 120GB HD
I've recently started to notice that while running 2-3 applications my MBP's drive will frequently (happens about 4-5 times a day) start sounding like an aircraft taking off and some of the system resources jump up to around 100%.
What can I do to remedy this situation?

Take it to your nearest Apple Store so they can hear it for themselves. Or if you have AppleCare or your computer is still under warranty, call Apple. If you computer really is that loud, then the Apple techs should have no problem hearing your computer +taking off+ over the phone.
Let Apple deal w/it.

    Resetting the Logic Board
Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.

  • G4 Hangs, Sounds like an Airplane Taking Off

My G4 has been running smoothly on Leopard so far. Lately, though, it has started hanging often... no spinning wheel, no opportunity to force quit... it literally freezes. I hold down the power button to turn it off and then on reboot the fan goes crazy... sounds like an airplane taking off.
I have fixed disk permissions. Reset PMU. Run fsck -fy. And it's still doing it.
I am also running several usb devices through a belkin hub: iPod shuffle, external maxtor 80Gig for time machine, and occasionally a canon powershot camera.
Last time I tried to import photos off the camera it had all kinds of trouble. Had to reboot several times.
I realize this thing is getting old... but my whole life is on it and I can't really replace right now. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Josh

If this is a Mirrored Drive Doors model, the fans are likely working as designed.
There are circuits inside that run the internal fans on their highest setting by default. When the computer is running properly, the software periodically checks the CPU temperature, and sets the fan to an appropriate setting -- almost always less than maximum.
At initial power up, and when the fan hardware is ignored (not turned down) for some large part of a minute, the fan circuits revert to the default, maximum setting to keep the CPU from getting so hot it is damaged. Sure is loud, isn't it!
If you are running 10.4 or later, boot it up (if you can) and check About this Mac > More Info > Diagnostics -- to see if is detecting any failures at startup.

  • IMac G5 Sounds like a jet taking off

Our iMac G5 sounds like a jet taking off shortly after we boot it up and try to open any applications. Also, when we try to power down and then turn it back on, a flashing folder shows up with a question mark and finder icon. Any ideas out there?

If you have not already, reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, reset SMU (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
FYI - For some reason, you are posting in the category for the older iMac G3 (CRT display).

  • After installation it sounds like a 747 taking off.

    Hello,
After I installed Leopard on a dual partitioned hard drive (the other partition has 10.4.9 and FCStudio 1)and Final Cut Studio 2, I then rebooted the computer. It never booted up, but it did sound like a 747 taking off. Only after a few minutes did I have to force a shutdown to end this noise and power. What is going on here and what am I missing? Does it have to do with installing Leopard on a partitioned drive or installing Final Cut Studio 2 on the Leopard side of the partitioned drive? Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

I have a dual G5 and that sound you hear always happens when the computer first starts up but quickly stops as soon as an OS is booted, I believe it is all the fans running full tilt. However, in your case, something happened and your system cannot find an OS and therefore that loud roar continues for a long time.
The noise is normal - the fact that it keeps going is not normal but related to a failed install or at least the inability of your system to boot into an OS.
Start it up and hold down the Option key and you should get a screen with all the bootable partitions showing. You should at least see your Tiger OS.
You may have to reinstall or repair the Leopard partition but the Tiger should still be working.

  • Computer sounds like it is taking off

This may be a simple fix, but for some time my computer makes an incredibly loud background noise .. almost sounds like it is taking off. A very, very loud humming. I have run diagnostics on it and reinstalled applications, but to no avail. This may be a hardware problem, but I am unable to run the Apple Hardware test that came with the start-up software. Any suggestions?

This would get better response and a more accurate answer if posted in the G5 usage forum.

  • Slowing down recording sounding like mickey mouse

i don't know how to ask this question - on recording meeting with dictaphone (tape) and later through device purchased from Dick Smith, converting tape to mp3 file, the resultant mp3 sounds like disney characters - ie it is somewhat speeded up sounding mickey mousey - can Audition slow the speed down to bring it back to real human sound? if so how (i havent tried audition yet)
if Audition can't do it, what else can?

Well, we need more info because he never actually says it sounds fine on it's own.  That's an important piece of info to know where the problem is.
However, it'll only be a sample rate issue if he's recording at one setting and playing back at a different one--possible in Audition but, to my mind, less likely than the batteries in the recording machine being on the way out or something.  Most cheap dictaphone type things only have a headphone out so it's entirely possible he's not hearing the output while he records into Audition.
Until the OP comes back and gives more details, it's pointless speculating any further...and since the OP hasn't been back in more than two weeks I'm not holding my breath.

The report shows you don't have enough RAM required to run all of the apps you run at the same time. Yosemite takes way more RAM than what OS X used to take.
To solve the problem do either one of these:
restart your mac from time to time (every night for ex).
Use less apps at the same time.
upgrade to 8GB of RAM if your Mac allows it

  • 27in iMac very loud fan noise. 3hrs after setup and running the fan came on. Sounded like a jet taking off.

Brand new fathers day gift. The unit is cool to the touch. Air being blown out of bottom is cool. Shut down unit was what I found to get it to shut off. That worked. I get up this morning and wake computer from sleeping and immediately fan comes on. I'm thinking I should take it back. 2 days old but the amount of updating it needed to do it was prolly built months ago.

    Tammy,
You can do a SMC reset. BTW the port on the bottom is the air intake, the exhaust is on the back on the upper left. However I'd recommend immediately contacting Apple Care. The machine should be OK right out of the box. You can find the contact information in your country at AppleCare Contact Info.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Sounds like a plane taking off!

The iMac makes a loud noise similar to that of an airplane takeoff – at first I thought that it was mostly related to web usage, but the more troubleshooting that I do, the more I realize that applications seem irrelevant.
I took it to the Apple Store and, although they replaced my power supply, the noise issue has not been addressed. I plugged it into different power supplies and electrical outlets but that does not make a difference.
I assume that the noise is being generated by a fan but that’s just a guess because I do not know a great deal about the inner workings of the iMac hardware. Could it be the processor? The fan? Or some other component?
I have had this issue since purchasing the iMac fifteen months ago but I just assumed that it was “normal”.
    Has anyone heard of this?
    Bill

Sorry to hear about your woes. The only time you shoud really hear the fans is if: a) The ambient temperature is high and, b) The computer is being stressed (Photoshop, video editing etc.)
My advice: call Apple and explain the problem. But before you call, note down your serial number (it's on the bottom of the stand), memory, OS X version, and detail the problem. You could also run the extended hardware test from the installation disc. To do this, start your computer normally and insert OSX disc 1 (mine came with 2 DVDs) when you get to the desktop. Restart, and hold the 'option' button on the keyboard. When the computer is ready, select the hardware test (surprise!). Select the extended test... and wait... and wait. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes on my computer. By the way, it's normal for the fans to howl when the test is in progress, so don't worry about that. If there are any messages, note them too. Then call Apple.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro laptop (early 2013) sudden slow down, and heats up while sleeping

Hi! I need help with my Macbook Pro laptop (early 2013) that suddenly slowed down, and heats up while sleeping. It slowed down 3 days ago. I want to know what checks I can do to find what is wrong with my laptop. Thank You

Hi! I did reset SMC but it did not work but thank you. Now, my hard drive crashed, bought a new one, but unfortunately my laptop does not detect the new hard drive so that where I'm at. Im not sure if I need to format the hard drive, replace an internal part like the connector of the hard drive to the logic board or the new hard drive is broken.

  • Why does my footage Slow down and loose audio when imported to after effects cs6?

Whenever I import video of any kind into after effects, it slows down and looses audio. It happens for every video. The weird thing is, it seems like it doesnt happen to anyone else on the internet. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE!!!! I am about to cry. I cant do anything with this stupid software! If there is a solution please tell me. Its really annoying.
    extra info-
    On Mac
    mov. Files
    H.264 codec

Slows down when? When you preview? Do you know how to preview?
If you are pressing the space bar to preview the video then the behavior you are seeing is normal. AE will not playback in real time with autio unless you do a ram preview (look it up). You must learn to use the software.
Start with the three videos on this page: Basic Workflow

    morrisroe,
were any of the crashes due to GPU panics?
It looks like something has modified your /etc/hosts file — do you know which of your apps has done that?
Did you ensure that all of your installed third-party apps are compatible with Mavericks before upgrading to Mavericks?
Your Silverlight plug-in is out of date; you can download the latest version (5.1.30317.0) from here.

  • My late 2011 15 inch mbp screen shuts down and don't turn on

My late 2011 15 inch mbp screen shuts down and don't turn on. Sometimes goes down after it gets in the sleep mode but another times it goes down when i'm working on it. The battery lights and the magsafe light still work but the screen doesn't respond, i have to shut down the computer and only after a couple of tries to turn it on i the screen wakes up. Also, sometimes when i turn it on the screen gets fragmented, like in the image. Does anyone have any solution? thanks.

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Song just slowed down and died - can't reboot, can't charge...

Ipod is dead - while playing, the song just slowed down completely, warped like a dying cassette tape player, and then froze. Nothing on screen. Tried to recharge - pc doesnt' recognize, no icon on ipod, rebooting many times doesn't work.
Is there any hope? Is this symptomatic of a dead-in-the-water battery or a shot disk drive? I'm traveling in India for another month so can't send in for service until I return to US...any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Have you tryed Charging the device for atleast 20min since this problem?
    If yes,
Try to Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds.
If the device still does not respond. You should try to restore the phone.
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force device into recovery mode.
