MBP froze, then trackpad inverted

Hi,
I've got a mid 2007 MBP, 2.2GHz, 2GB ram, running 10.4.11.
I just had a seriously weird and scary incident. I was just browsing the net, having woken the computer from sleep after a short walk to school. After about 2 minutes worth of browsing, the computer totally froze, with no response from anything, track pad or keyboard, no force quit, no mouse movement at all. I gave it some time to gather it's thoughts, see if it would come out of this, and then after about 30 seconds, the trackpad starts responding, except backwards and in big jumps.
So the trackpad was inverted, meaning if I moved my finger down, the mouse on the screen moves up. By "big jumps" i mean I'd move my finger just a little, and the mouse would jump about inch or two across the screen. THis went on for about 10 seconds before it froze again, and i just forced the computer off by holding the power button.
Lately I've noticed I've had many many page outs, despite 2GB of ram. Just approximately, it'd be something like 200,000 page ins and 150,000 page outs after a day or two of uptime. I don't know if this could be related.
Unfortunately, I let my last chance to buy applecare slip by me while I was in Europe this summer, so this computer is no longer covered under warranty (been kicking myself in the pants ever since, I simply forgot when i bought the computer and thought it had been later on!)
Thanks for any help or suggestions!
Jeff

thanks for the response. I'll try a disk repair, and if that doesn't work, i'll just reformat, i've got everything backed up pretty much.
I'm surprised about the RAM though... just a year or two ago, 2GB was a lot of ram, and it's not like I'm doing anything more than I used to. Mail, Safari, iTunes, Word and Powerpoint, sometimes iPhoto, and more rarely, Matlab and Labview... but I see a lot of pageouts even before I start using those last two programs. They keep finding ways to make us need more ram and newer computers just to do the same stuff!

    Hi There,
My 17" intel iMac screen froze then has gone completely blank..
I've done a SMC reset to no avail.
    thanks

If it won't startup in Safe Mode, then try Startup Manager or the Apple Hardware Test from your original Install Disc.

  • 32 inch 32C110U1 froze then turn off

my toshiba tv recently froze then the screen faded and made a sound and turned off any help pease i`ve had the tv 6months did it just get hot or is it dying

You could try resetting the TV to factory defaults. Press MENU and open the Setup menu. Select Installation, System Status, and then System Information. Finally, select Factory Defaults and then confirm. Wait for the reset to complete. Then, ensure that the TV is off and unplug it from power for a minute.

  • Ipod froze then the screen it just lite up with nothing on it

ipod froze then the screen is just lite up with nothing on it can't turn it off

    - Try:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't completely turn the iPod off let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an our try again.
    - Then time for an appointment at the genius Bar of an Apple store.

    Can anyone help please?
5.0.1 Firefox, application froze then crashed. Restarted it, but no 'restore session' and i've lost all my tabs. Help please?!?!
    Done config:restoresession, and nothing.

There shouldn't be any numbered sessionstore-##.js in the Firefox Profile Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
The presence of such files usually indicates that that was a problem with accessing the main sessionstore.js file that prevented Firefox from renaming the temp file with the number.<br />
In this case you may be lucky that the file with the highest number may have that session.<br />
You can try to rename the file sessionstore-3.js to sessionstore.js to see if that brings back the lost tabs.
If you use the Time Machine then you can try to restore a copy of sessionstore.js from around the time that you lost that session.

2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4Gig 500MBHDD boots slow.  It finishes post in the same time as an identical MBP, and then hangs for 30 seconds on one of the ethernet adapters, before finishing the boot.  Once booted it is normal.   Turning off airport changes nothing.  Hardline adapter is not plugged in.  Thunderbolt adapter is not used.  Bluetooth is off.  Did this out of box.  Identical MBP boots to login screen in 36 seconds.  Disk repair, permission repair, and safe mode boot have
already been done, no change.  Boot time is consistent.  Hangs at the same place each time.  Right after post.  Bad adapter?
    Comments, solutions please.

... and so ... now a few days later, success.   I ran
your software but it told me nothing I hadn 't seen
    in verbose boot.
Consistently, following good post, the boot hung
for 30 seconds on the adapters, (cards, chips, NICs.
Ethernet cards, whatever you prefer to call them)
either the airport card or the hard line.  It would then
proceed at normal pace to the login screen.
Since it came out of the box that way, software
conflict was not a go.  I guessed glitched driver or
fetch instruction.  I zapped the PRAM (cleared
NVRAM) and reloaded the OS, updates, Garage Band,
iPhoto (one of Apple's true dogs in an otherwise
rare arena) iMovie, Photoshop, Lightroom, their
updates, and my files.   MBP pro now boots to login
in 31 seconds.  Note I have turned off as much gee
whiz, rubber band scroll, global swiping and other
hubcaps and hood ornaments as befits how like
things ... and turned off all the Asian and other fonts
    I will. ever use.
Best guess ... corrupt driver or corrupt fetch script ...
bad server squirt at factory load.
    Thanks for your help, Cheers!

  • HT3964 screen froze, then closed down. when setting up the grey screen remains on and you hear the laptop kicking over

screen froze, then closed down. when starting up again, screen remains grey and you can hear the laptop 'clicking' away?

A clicking sound can be a disk drive that's bit the dust or on it's way there.
Boot into Lion recovery mode (hold down command and r keys while booting), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Also repair permissions while you're there.  If the repair hard drive completes without error, then reboot normally.
If that doesn't do it, run the Apple hardware test. Choose the extended test when prompted.
Depending what the Apple hardware test tells you will determine your next step. Hopefully your hard drive is backed up.

  • IPad 2 16gig went over sized on screen froze then shut down now onlyI displays apple logo

iPad 2 went over sized on screen then froze then shut down now will only display apple logo

The image means that the iPad has gone into recovery mode - you will need to connect it to your computer's iTunes, that should recognise the iPad and allow you to reset it back to factory defaults, and you can then restore/resync your content to it. Whilst it's in recovery mode you might not be able to turn it off (I'm not sure whether it's possible or not)

Suddanly Mbp display has got inverted colors with black on white settings. in universal access. When I connect external display(tv), TV display is normal. I reinstalled os x lion. But it did not help. I had this problem before but it solved after reinstalling os x lion.
Did you have this problem? What should I do?

Sorry, its not an external display. I changed out THE display in my imac. When I hooked up my wife's display it was photo negative and the imac was color. I changed the Universal Settings and the external display went to color and the imac went to photo negative.

  • MBP froze now screen is very dimmed but still on froze screen

Hi guys, earlier today I was using my 2012 MBP with not too many programs open. The computer then froze and I let it sit for a bit but it was still frozen. I then shut the computer lid and then the screen was black. I had thought it was turned off but I just realized the screen is extremely dimmed but I can just make Out the words. It's still on the same screen. I have turned the brightness up and I have made a genius appointment.
    Thanks,

Alright guys, I took the computer to apple and they said because it's so new they would give me a new one.

  • 2012 13" MBP keyboard and trackpad inop after OS loads

I have a 2012 13" MBP (non retina) that had water spilled on the counter that pooled around it and some seeped into the bottom (don't ask how). I have taken it apart, cleaned it with alcohol, baked it to ensure it is dry and now almost everything works.
The odd thing is that the keyboard and trackpad will work during system boot to, say, reset PRAM or boot into safe mode or select any other combination; however, when the system boots into the OS (or recovery mode, etc) the keyboard and trackpad stop working all together. I can connect an external mouse and keyboard and it works fine...I installed a fresh HDD with a fresh copy of Yosemite and still have the same symptoms.
I doubt it's a hardware related issue since they both work on startup, but for the life of me I can't locate the issue that prevents them from working. I have turned off BT, reset PRAM and SMC, reset by holding power button in for a long time after shut down, all with the same results.
I also replaced the top case (new keyboard/trackpad) and have the same results....
What's interesting is if I keep pressing caps lock while the system is booting (press once per second) the keyboard and mouse will work after boot, but then stop after a minute...which is some progress I guess. I am going to try and reinstall the OS one more time and see if that makes a difference....I have reached the end of google and am out of ideas....anyone have any thoughts?

Update:  I've justed attempted a boot from a Mavericks install USB stick.  The trackpad and keyboard are still not recognised.
Unless I'm mistaken, I've either a very odd hardware fault, or something has got scrambled with non-volatile memory/firmware.

  • 17'' MBP Discoloration Near Trackpad

My 17'' MBP is running great since I purchased it in May 06. But now I'm noticing some discoloration near the trackpad area. It's a lot lighter, almost white, compared to the rest of handrest. I still use the white foamy strip, that came with the computer, everytime I close it. I also use the iKlear polish every two weeks.
Why the discoloration? What are my options? I'm also enrolled in the AppleCare plan. Thanks!

17'' MBP BABY!!!!!   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Returned a Dell for a Mac

My last unit was weird like that too.
Took it to the Apple Store, two days later got a brand new case. Be firm with them if they give you a hard time.
You shouldn't have any problems though. The aluminum on these things is sort of funky sometimes based on your skin and acid levels.

  • Bootcamp, XP, MBP 13" and trackpad

Is there any way to get the trackpad to work under Windows XP on a MBP 13 using bootcamp? I am working a cunning plan to get a devout PC user over to a Mac and a right-click capability is an absolute must on this trackpad. I use the magic trackpad and the two-finger click is second nature, can I do anything like it for XP on the MBP. The Control Panel only has controls for a mouse, is there one for a trackpad?
    Thanks - Lawrence

  • Imac froze then wont reboot.

My imac froze whilst my iphone was syncing.
It wont boot up past the apple and spinning circle logo.
I have left this for 15 mins and it still wont reboot.
I managed to get the install disc in and use the disk utility.
It gave me the following messages.
    Incorrect number of thread records.
    Invalid leaf record count
(it should be 2001211 instead of 2001210)
    Invalid volume free block count
(it should be 29872332 instead of 29872331)
It is now repairing the volume.
How long should this take and is there anything else I need to do so the mac will boot up ?

If it was me, before doing a full re-install, I would use a cloning utility (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) to duplicate the internal drive to the external drive. Then try booting from the external drive by setting it as the startup volume in System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. This is a test to make sure it works and everything (especially your personal data) is there, like your internal drive.
If it runs smoothly (may feel a bit slower if that external is a USB drive) and those issues do not recur, the system may be fine. You can then use Disk Utility Erase tab to erase (reformat) the internal drive (be sure to select the internal DRIVE and not the volume indented below the drive in the Disk Utility sidebar). Then clone the external drive back it the internal drive. The reformat will get rid of the disk directory corruption error, so hopefully your previous system will work fine.
If the error caused problems with the system files (similar problems recur when booted from the external clone), you can do a full Mac OS X re-install on a freshly erased internal drive, then migrate your personal data from the clone on the external drive. In either case, the first step is to duplicate your internal drive to the external drive. The easiest way is to use one of those cloning utilities.
It is possible that there is a hardware problem with the drive. In most cases, the reformat will get rid of the problem, if it just corruption to the disk directory. You should monitor closely for a few weeks, because if the hard drive is starting to fail, a similar problem might happen again.

  • Phone froze, then i tried to restart and is frozen with apple logo.

What do i do? The phone froze so i did a hard restart. held the wake/sleep button and home button, then i turned it back on and it doesnt go to anything else but with the load up apple screen. Has been like this for hours and its sitting on the charger. Also turned it off for an hour and still hasnt been resolved. Have had the phone for 13 months. wasnt updated with latest software. Isthe phone a goner or is there something i can do??

Hold HOME and SLEEP about 10 seconds to reboot the phone.
If this doesn't work reboot your computer, launch iTunes, find a USB port directly on your computer (not a hub). Plug the USB end of the cable in to the computer. Press and hold the HOME button while connecting the iPhone to the other end. CONTINUE HOLDING until something happens on the phone, then release. This will put the phone into Recovery mode and it should reinstall the firmware.
