MBP getting slow?

Ok so my computer is about 5 or 6 months old now. Its a mbp intel core duo with 512mb of ram. It has been running like a charm. It is so fast for only 512mb of ram I must say, but lately things I would normally do take allot longer.
For example: Sometimes iTunes can take up to 6 bounces to open. Normally I could do it in two to 3. Mail can take up to 5 bounces. It doesn't do it every day though. Its odd it seems to have its bad days. Some days it is nice and speedy again So what the heck is going on? Is there an app I can get to test the speed of my ram or anything?

Here I did the test. I have no Idea how to read this. can somebody read it and tell me what my system is lacking? Thanks. --By the way I noticed initial boot times are getting slower aswell.

  • MBP getting slow and sliuggish.

    Hello
I hope this is the right forum to post this but I'm new to MAC, having bought my first MBP. I also use Final Cut Express.
My external drive is a LaCie 500gb usb/Fw400/|FW800/eSata and contains all my video files as well as being the time machine backup (not a good idea! ).
Anyway I thought I heard we really don't need to "clean-out-the-trash" like we do on PC, ie; defragging deleting temp files and the like. However I am noticing that my MBP seems to be slowing down and getting a bit sluggish. Not the peppy thing it was when I bought it 3 months ago.
Mainly doing video editing and right now have a project with 11 hours of DV video on the timeline in FCE.
My question is should I be defragging the drives? What other utilities do I need to find and run regularly or does Leapord take care of these things automatically? if so when? A friend told me I had to leave my MBP on all night because Leapord runs it's maintainence at night.
I'm a bit confused here. Could someone straighten me out a bit?
    Thanks
    Allen

    Hi
Thanks. What happened was when I booted with the recovery discs, my main screen came up and the boot disc was in a seperate window. I just did it again. PUt in my MAC OS-x Install disc 1. It's in it's own window and there's no menu bar at the top of the window. A the top ofthe screen is my Finder menu bar. The only choices to click on this window is "Install MAC OS-x and Bundled Software.app", or Install Bundled Sofftware only, Below those icons is 2 grey folders, opeional installs and instructions.
Again should I somehow have made an emergency boot disk?
I'm using Disc 1 of the 2 discs that came with the MBP.
Sorry if I'm not understanding something here.
Coming from PC's when you use a boot disc you don't get any part of your main window showing up. Maybe thats confusing me.

  • MBP getting slower and SLOWER

I'm really disturbed at the moment. My MBP (sig) has been working fine for a year, but ever since leopard it has been slowing down. Under tiger, boot times averaged >30 seconds, and now under 10.5.2 it takes well over a minute (1:10ish) to boot. When it does boot and I open safari, I get the beachball a lot for the first few minutes until it is "fully" booted (despite menu bar and dock having already loaded and working). Once the computer has fully booted, speed returns to normal, and everything is just as snappy as it used to be. Although I do get the beach balls more often now, for example on multiple occasions I have gotten the beach ball while opening the dictionary, calculator, scrolling through safari, opening firefox, etc...
I have repaired permissions and reset PRAM to no avail. Is there any way I can speed up this computer and improve boot times?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • MBP leopard 10.5.8 is getting slower and the spinning wheel is constant

My 1 year old MBP running OSX has got more sluggish. The little multicolored spinning timer wheel keeps appearing a lot more now, and I hate it! My MBP takes drastically longer to boot when i turn it on as opposed to when I just got it. My web pages take a long time to load. Can anyone help me? WHat can I do to speed up my MBP. I am a novice mac user. this is my first mac. I appreciate the help. Again my mac is getting slower by the day and i dont know how to increase its overall performance. Is there any simple software that can boost overall performance or will I have to reformat my MBP? I have a 200gb HD with 50 gb free and 4 gb of ram. I thought with that ram i would have a super fast MBP but I dont. Please help.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Dave

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Launch the Activity Monitor utility. Pull down the list near the top and set it to "All Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading to put the highest CPU consumers at the top. Also click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the window to check the value for "% Idle". If that value is much above zero, check the other categories for signs of resource problems. If nothing there points to a possible problem, launch the Console utility and look for messages that might suggest a problem. If you see messages that you have trouble interpreting, post them here and someone should be able to help.

  • My mbp is getting slower ??

i have a mbp (juli 2009) and at first it was fast and snappy and boot up was fast, but it's getting sluggish and slower ever sinds.
Is there any one who has an idea why it is getting slower ?? And maybe has an idea about how to fix it.
my harddisk is 50 % full, i have bootcamp installed. And i am running snow leopard.

Ok, once it says backup complete under the time machine icon in the upper right corner of the screen, when you click on it, examine the directory*

    Ciao.
An early 2011 MBP would have 10.6 installed, not 10.5.  I assume that is a typographical error or is the MBP model year incorrect?

  • MBP keeps slowing down after some uptime

I bought my MBP less than a month ago, and after about two days of uptime it starts to slow down dramatically. Apps become unresponsive and/or respond too slowly and performance as a whole is very bad.
I'm running Lion on the 13'' Core i5 with 4 gigs of RAM. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Friends of mine who have older MBPs get great performance even after much longer uptimes (like a week on end).

  • Broadband just getting slower and slower

    Hi.
Our broadband has been getting slower and slower. (0.8 -0.9 mbps)
I called BT in India on Thursday, who said that BT had 'upgraded my line but the homehub was too old to cope with it' and sent through a new home hub. The lady also told us that we should expect to see speeds of about 3mbps.
We set up the new hub today and we're now getting download speeds of 0.35 mbps.
When we called back BT in India, after a long conversation the person we spoke to came to the conclustion that the homehub they sent us was faulty and we'd receive a new one.
I'm no engineer and I may be cynical, but I have no confidence that this will solve the issue.
Apparently we are not entitled to to have an engineer because 'the trouble shooting protocol has not yet been concluded'.
The lady was not able to tell us how many homehubs we'd have to receive to establish that this was the problem.
Is there anything else I can do?
    Solved!

  • FIRE FOX IS GETTING SLOWER AND SLOWER LOADING PAGES I GO TO ONLINE. IT LOAD CIRCLE STOP SPINNING AND WILL START BACK BUT IT TAKES IT'S TIME TO DO SO. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON THROUGH THE LAST SEVERAL UPGRADES.

FIRE FOX USED TO BE A FAST BROWSER BUT IT IS GETTING SLOWER AND SLOWER. THE BLUE-E IS ABOUT TO THE POINT OF BEING FASTER THEM THE FOX. I HAVE ALWAYS LIKE THE FOX, JUST WANT TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM WITH IT AND THE LONGER I HAVE THE WINDOW OPEN ARE UP THE WORSE IT GETS. I DO A LOT OF GAMING ON FACEBOOK PLAYING MAFIA WARS BUT THE PROBLEM IS NOT LIMITED TO JUST THERE IT IS ALL THE TIME AND EVERY WHERE. I HAVE TRIED ADD-ON'S THINKING THEY MAY HELP BUT NOTHING HAS DONE ANY GOOD. CHROME IS TWICE IF NOT THREE
TIMES AS FAST AS THE FOX LATELY ON LOADING PAGES.

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • My mac gets slow when I play music from my iTunes library

Hi, aproximately six months ago I noticed that everytime I play music from my iTunes library that its stored in my 27" iMac's hard drive, the computer gets slow, the images start to flicker, the animatios on the dock and the one when u minimize or maximaze the windows, also flicker. As soon as I close iTunes the computer works fine again. When I play music from a CD this doesn't happen.
I've taken the iMac to two service providers along theese 6 months and neighther have been able to fix the issue. What they have diagnozed is an issue with the hard drive which has been changed 4 times already.
    What could be the issue?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Why is my iPod touch getting slower and slower

Please can anyone tell me why my iTouch is getting slower and slower?
also why do we have to do so many updates?
Can I go back to the original software for my ipod touch?
sorry for so many questions but they are related

    - All I can say in this Apple forum is that downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.
    - Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    - Restoring the iPod also helps

What wil happen if i install OS Lion, do i lost my Applications or ...????

Hi, the last install dvd that came out for mac's was Snow Leopard,10.6.3. Lion is a download from apple. You cannot just install it over Yosemite. You would have to backup your drive to save files you want and do a clean install. You might want to look into getting more memory. You can run 8 Gig"s of memory on your Macbook Pro.If your Macbook Pro is getting really slow you might want to download EtreCheck  and then post the results here.http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck  Check out this article.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19031
