MBP hangs intermittently

I have a mid 2009 macbook pro with a 2.8 GHz Core2Duo and 4GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM. I don't understand why sometimes the laptop will hang and this happens randomly, while surfing the net or even if I'm just opening an application. I can't understand whats causing this because I think the specs are more than enough to handle normal internet browsing and a few other applications open simultaneously.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh and I'm also using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit via bootcamp if that makes any difference.

When memory gets low and you start paging out, you can experience that. Next time it happens, try logging into another User account and try running in there for a day. See if it still happens.

  • Synchronization hangs intermittently

    Hi,
    The synchronization of a couple of Analysis Services databases hangs intermittently. They generally hang on Thursday which is when there is a relatively heavy load on the servers. However the servers are high spec so there is not a high load percentage usage
    of resources on CPU / memory and disk IO. The databases being synced which hang are around 15Gb in size.
    I am also not able to receive any error messages.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Kieran.

    Sorry that your New Year is getting off to such a bad start. Freezing can have many causes, and unfortunately the logic board can be one of them. Other possibilities may be a dying hard drive and software corruption.
    Unfortunately, when I had logic board problems, it was definitely heat related. It would freeze after 15-20 minutes. If I set up a fan, it would go about twice that long.
    Do you still have the original hard drive? If so, it may be getting long in the tooth. Here is a utility that you can download and run several times for free:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
    This utility will give you more insight into the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive than Disk Utility will.
    What does the iBook do when booted from a disc? If it still slows and freezes, that would point to the logic board, as you are essentially bypassing the hard drive and the OS.
    If you want to exert pressure on the logic board, here is an article that might help to apply it at the right point:
    http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
    Finally, to eliminate all possibility of a software cause, you might want to try reinstalling the OS.
    It would probably be prudent to back up all your data if you haven't already and keep it backed up. Until your iBook is diagnosed and fixed, there is always the danger that it could die at any time.
    Sorry to not be able to be more encouraging.
    Good luck!

  • OSX hanging intermittently

    I recently bought a new 13" MacBook Pro 2.53GHz, I haven't even had it a month yet. I'm having a problem where the OS will hang intermittently. Let me explain.
    I first noticed the problem when playing videos back with quicktime. All of a sudden playback would seem to stop even though I hadn't pressed pause. If I tried to click anywhere the computer would become unresponsive and I would get the spinning beachball (though I could still move the mouse). After up to a minute playback would resume but skipped forward, as if it had remained playing during the hang.
    This doesn't just happen with quicktime is running. I've noticed I seem to be "allowed" one more click before the system hangs. I've tried to use this to my advantage by bringing up Activity Monitor, but I can't see any unresponsive or out of control processes. I've also noticed that if something is playing in iTunes, it continues playing throughout the hang.
    Finally, when the hang is over, the system seems to play catch up, carrying out all the commands and mouse clicks I made during the hang.
    This happens a few times a day. Hangs last up to about a minute. It's incredibly frustrating and I'm not sure how to go about fixing the problem. I've run a hardware test from the OSX disc and everything seems to be fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Might be a good idea to boot from your install disk and check the hard drive just in case.
    Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
    Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
    Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    (Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
    Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
    If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
    When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
    Select your start up disk and click Restart
    While you have the Disk Utility window open look at the bottom of the window. You will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% free disk space.
    If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

  • After most recent update, Firefox keep hanging intermittently with "Not Responding".

    After the most recent update, my Firefox browser begins to hang intermittently with "Not Responding". I have checked the extensions and plug-in like Java, all of them are the latest updated ones. Everytime I open a new site or click on links to load another page, it happens. Every single time.

    '''is there a solution ''(temporary OR permanent)'' for this problem yet?'''
    i tried '''EVERY possible alternative'''; even when opened in ''''''safe mode'''''' or when installed for the first time w| '''NO addons or ANYthing else''' but the '''original default settings''', still does the same thing.
    mozilla people?? really?? no answer|feedback|suggestions, anything at all from u guys??
    if it isnt a version (browser, OS, addons, etc) issue, what is it that separates us from the users not having the problem?
    this is is very frustrating; h|e it's even more frustrating when there is no response from tech support. is it because there havent been enough people who have reported this same issue so there can be some interest & find a fix; OR is it that u dont know; OR that there is not & will not be any fix?
    we cant continue being users if we cannot use it. it's really my favorite browser, but if it doesn't work & u guys dont have a fix for it, then users w| this same problem wont have any other option but to switch to a different browser permanently.
    really mozilla??? nothing? a reply would be very nice...

  • Citrix the screens hang intermittently

    We have an Oracle 9205 database running on Windows 2003 server.
    We are web deploying our application using Oracle9IAS 10222; we are using the forms listener servlet including Developer6i Patch 16. The version of Jinitiator is 1.3.1.17.
    When deploying this via Citrix the screens hang intermittently and users are forced to log out of citrix and log back in. Interestingly Oracle Financial's is running fine on the same box.
    Pls, do let me know how to resolve this issue
    Rgds,
    Satya

    The use of Citrix or any terminal emulation software with Forms is not supported. In most cases, it is determined that the cause of these types of problems are the result of the emulation software (Citrix in your case) and not Oracle Forms. It is recommended that you retest in a non-Citrix environment. If the problem is no longer reproducible you should then contact the Citrix vendor.
    To be a valid, supported Forms user (client) the client machine must have a browser and Jintiator (JRE) install on their local machine. It is also required that the browser cache and JRE cache are stored locally.

  • FDB hangs intermittently and needs to be killed

    Hey,
    Do you guys have any idea what may cause this issue?
    Sometimes when you publish a project, the debugger says it is ready, and Flash Player 10 is running, but its window never appears. When trying to compile again, the OS reports that the SWF file is locked.
    The problem does not occur with Flash Player 9, but I have been able to repeat this issue with every version of Flash Player 10, using the external debug player on Windows. It happens intermittently so it is very hard to track down.
    For what I know, Java (running mxmlc/fcsh/fdb) gets hung up. It sometimes starts working again if you kill every instance of FlashPlayer.exe ... ending the current debug session. It also starts to work if you kill every instance of Java.exe and try again.
    I have not seen this issue when debugging by hand. The issue appears to be with the combination of Java and the Flash 10 player, and I have the feeling that it occurs because of something happening too quickly. Yes, I am using FlashDevelop, but it should not matter. FlashDevelop compiles the SWF, copies the result to the target directory, starts the debugger, then launches the external player when the debugger is ready. It offers the same commands I give the debugger by hand, so maybe Flash Player 10 has some kind of "warm up" period which sometimes gets the best of the debugger. Either way, FlashDevelop launches FDB, waits for the prompt, and offers commands.
    Does Flex Builder use the same apps as the Flex SDK? Perhaps it does not occur because FlashDevelop runs faster. The problem is more likely to occur with bigger, more complicated files. Perhaps Flash Player 10 loads up, reports itself as ready, but still has to load up code. If for some reason this initialization stage takes a frame too long, FDB tries to talk to it as if it were ready, but its come through just too soon.
    You can see more details about this here:
    http://www.flashdevelop.org/community/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4707
    It's been over two years since I started having this issue. I stuck with Flash Player 9 for a long time because of it. Now that I use Flash Player 10 for all my projects, it feels like its time to try and figure out what's going on here. It's easy to pass the buck and say its a FlashDevelop problem, but that really is not what I am seeing ... and if FlashDevelop had to do something different, like add an artificial pause to wait for Flash Player to initialize, it would at least be helpful to know what needs to be done to negotiate the debugger without hanging it.
    I appreciate your help and I don't mean to come across as confrontational if I sound that way. I'm just hoping to get down to a real answer and not assume that this is "just the way things are"
    Thank you!

    I have a few thoughts.  For one thing, reading through the thread over on flashdevelop.org, some (and perhaps all) of the problems people encountered were due to a bug in the Flash player, which was fixed this past summer.  (The Flash Builder record of the bug is here: http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-16153 -- but the bug was actually in the player.)
    So please make sure you have the latest debugger version of the Flash player.  You can get the latest version here: http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
    That is almost certainly the cause of the "WARNING: The Player that you are using does not support all fdb commands" message that member "elyon" described in his post on June 4, 2009.  Hopefully it will help with whatever problems you are running into.
    In another post that same day, elyon saw this output from FDB:
    Adobe fdb (Flash Player Debugger) [build 4852]
    Copyright (c) 2004-2007 Adobe, Inc. All rights reserved.
    Waiting for Player to connect
    Player connected; session starting.
    Unexpected error while processing command.
    For diagnostic purposes stack trace follows:
    But apparently there was no stack after that message.  If you can reproduce that error message, the way to get stack dumps to appear is to pass "-Dtrace.error=true" to Java when it launches FDB.  This is a Java property, so it must be passed as an argument to Java, not to FDB.  For example, if launching FDB from the command line, you can launch it like this:
    java -Dtrace.error=true fdb.jar
    > Does Flex Builder use the same apps as the Flex SDK?
    Yes, but not in quite the same way FlashDevelop does.  FDB has a public Java API that can be called by any Java app to control debugging, and that's what Flex Builder does, unlike FlashDevelop's approach.  So, FlashDevelop and Flex Builder are using the exact same underlying debugger code; it's possible that there is some sort of problem with FlashDevelop's communication over the pipe, I just don't know.
    You say you haven't seen this issue when "debugging by hand" -- you mean when using FDB directly?  If so, then I suppose the Flash player version isn't the problem.  I'd be interested to see a repro case that involved just FDB (perhaps reading commands from a file or a pipe if that's the easiest way to reproduce it).
    There is nothing unusual about FDB's communication with stdin and stdout, it's pretty standard stuff.   Also, it's all open source, http://opensource.adobe.com, so you can debug it if you want.

  • After installing Adobe Flash Player Plugin to view videos on youtube, mozilla gets hangs intermittently. Please help

    I installed Firefox 23.0.1 and after that It asked me to install Flash Player Plugin to view videos on Youtbe. I installed Flash Player 11 Plugin and since then Mozilla started hanging/freezing intermittently. It hangs on those websites also where videos are not running.
    I uninstalled Flash Player 11 Plugin and it works smoothly without it.
    Please help

    This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common reasons for Flash problems in Firefox:
    (1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.
    (2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash
    (A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
    orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    (B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues
    (3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8)
    See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]

  • C application hangs intermittently on invoking Closehandle() function in Win 7 64bit OS

    Hi,
    I have a application which basically deals with network operations like begin session, send/receive etc. The application also has mutex create, request and close. Before terminating the transaction between the client and server, there is a call to Closehandle()
    while clears that mutex that was created during initialization. (Mutex is released prior to close). During closing the mutex, in Windows 7 64 bit OS, the application goes to hung state intermittently. The same application used work without any issues in Win
    XP.
    PS: The C application is written in Visual Studio 6.0
    Hence requesting for any thoughts to resolve this problem!!
    Thanks in Advance!

    Hi,
    When application hangs, it needs to be restarted. Yes, this problems happens sometimes.
    With respect to the anti-virus and firewalls, I had tried turned off firewalls and anti-virus but did not help!
    This application basically acts as a network layer which is the bridge between client and server.
    Below is the code snippet from the app which shows about mutex creation, request and close. I had configured ADPlus to the application to check on which line of the code the hang occurs and from that dump file could notice that the cause for the hang is
    Closehandle() function.
    Code snippet -
    typedef unsigned long OSLMUTEXSEM;
    extern OSLMUTEXSEM gsemCrypt;
    void PASInitialize() {
    char *            pMutexSemName;
    DWORD     NTRC;
    pMutexSemName = gsemCrypt;
    oslRc = MutexSemCreate((char*)NULL,&gsemCrypt));   //Mutex creation by calling CreateMutex() function
    oslRc = MutexSemRequest( gsemCrypt, SEM_WAIT_FOREEVER); //Request the semaphore by calling WaitForSingleObject() function -infinite //timeout
    // some operation
    oslRC = MutexSemRelease( gsemCrypt ));  // release the mutex by calling ReleaseMutex function
    void PASTerminate(){
    oslRC = MutexSemClose(gsemCrypt); //calling Closehandle()function to close the mutex
    WSACleanup();
    From the dump files, it was noticed that the hang happens at the call MutexSemClose(..) function which in turn calls windows function Closehandle().

  • Hangs intermittently

    Happy New Year, everyone, from frosty Scotland. Mine's off to a lousy start. My four-year-old iBook G4 (OSX 10.3.9) has started freezing up on me, intermittently. Sometimes a reboot works (although it soon ends in tears); other times I end up at a blue screen. There's plenty of free disk space. I've reset the PRAM and run the disk first-aid. I've booted from the system disks. I've also had a good look on here for similar problems - have I fallen victim to the infamous logic board fault? Applying a c-clamp doesn't make much difference - the iBook hangs with or without clamping (although I'm not entirely sure I'm clamping where I should be).
    The machine seems to work best when it's cold; I put in a good two-hour stint tonight before it started to act up. Anything?

    Sorry that your New Year is getting off to such a bad start. Freezing can have many causes, and unfortunately the logic board can be one of them. Other possibilities may be a dying hard drive and software corruption.

    It would probably be prudent to back up all your data if you haven't already and keep it backed up. Until your iBook is diagnosed and fixed, there is always the danger that it could die at any time.

  • Essbase Server Hangs Intermittently - Urgent pls Help

    Essbase Version - 9.3.3
    Shared Services - 9.3.3
    Enviroment - Windows Server 2003
    We are in the process of migrating the users from Domain A to Domain B
    There are around 15000 users across the board, out of which I assume there are around 250 users accessing the Hyperion Application.
    Since the Domain Migration was started, We encountered Essbase Server freezes Intermittently.
    Essbase Server goes down for about 10-15 Minutes and automatically comes back. No Error Msg in the Essbase Log.
    Active Directory Migration was put on Hold because business had to complete their Month end Activities.
    While we were working to find the RCA and identified that few users who were migrated from Domain A to Domain B appeared to be on Both the Domain and we figured out that it might be one of the reason for Essbase Server Hangs.
    We had a Plan to Run the Update native Directory Utility to clear the Stale Data
    Post Performing the Action our system was stable and didn't had system Hangs.
    we also changed the shared services Cache refresh Interval to 24 Hrs in CSS.xml File ( Just to Make sure the Refresh happens Overnight)
    Since the Active Directory Team had resumed their Migration Activies, we started Experiencing the System Hangs Issues again. server goes down for 5-10 min and comes back up
    Please Input your Valuable Thoughts, Would Really Appreciate your Help.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your prompt response.
    As mentioned, AD team have the filters on place, There is no issues with the User Access and there was no change in password after migrating the Domain.
    I have checked the Display Session through Maxl and there is No heavy sessions.
    As Stated earlier, we are unable to identify the cause regarding the System Freeze. All users access the application all  of sudden essbase server hangs and it doesn't allow user to retrieve the data, nor allow him to access any application within Essbase and Planning.
    After 5-10 Min,  server automatically comes back.
    Can you tell me if there is a way to track the system Hangs through Essbase Log without getting the any inputs from the users.
    Assuming if the users sessions are heavy what makes the server hang and automatically resumes without intervention.
    Shared Services Security Log display the following Error, Can you tell me if you had come across any such errors before.

  • MBP hangs for 30 seconds and I've tried everything

    I have been trying to fix my girlfriends laptop by going through the forums but I have reached a dead end.
    She said that one day, she put her mbp to sleep and when she took it out later, it was overheating and still awake, with iTunes open. Since then, the computer will hang for 30 seconds every minute or two, depending on how demanding you use the apps.
    During a hang, Activity Monitor shows no spikes in CPU, memory or Disk Usage, the mouse moves and becomes a beach ball if you click a bunch, and happens with any App, including Finder. When using Chrome, Mac asks if you would like to "kill the page" or "wait" which only shows for a few seconds before eveything returns to normal again (about 30s).
    Things I have tried:
    Sleep, Restart, Shutdown
    Disk / Permissions Repairs (Disk OK, Permissions show "harmless" things according to the forums)
    SMC/PRAM Resets, System Diagnostics
    Lion Clean Install, Mavericks Clean install, booting from Recovery HD and a USB
    Dusting the inside of the laptop, refitting RAM, physically detaching the battery
    After all this, the issue still exists. Booting from the Recovery HD and USB I still experienced the hangs, so that led me to believe that the issue can't be the hard drive. I also heard that CPUs have protective mechanisms to keep themselves, and if RAM or video cards fail you won't be able to see anything.
    If you have any ideas as to what could be the problem, please let me know. Thanks.

    I also wanted to mention the hangs would also occur during OSX installations, and processes such as booting, shutting down, Disk Repairs and Permissions Repairs or OSX Reinstallation took 10-20x longer than estimated by the process (for ex. if it says 3 hours remaining It could take 24 hours to complete)
    I will bring in the laptop soon to a Genius Bar, but I need to have the computer on me for the next week and don't want to pay a bunch of money to get it fixed just yet, since it's not covered by warranty.

  • Yosemite on 2010 MBP hangs after an hour

    I'm having a strange issue similar to the one described here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/151658/yosemite-hangs-exactly-every-60- minutes
    I had a troublesome upgrade to Yosemite on my 2010 MBP with a custom 128 GB SSD installed. I had to abort installation and then recovered from that by reinstalling OSX via recovery mode. Now everything works fine except for the fact that the system freezes (spinning beach ball, can move windows, cannot access force quit or change focus) consistently one hour after boot. Even after several hours nothing happens and the only option is to hard reset. Booting in safe mode has the same effect.
    This is obviously pretty frustrating, especially since there seems to be nothing indicating any problems in the system logs, and after a forced restart, no crash report is generated. I don't know what happened for the user in the linked thread, but our issues seem quite similar - what could this be? Some kind of daemon blocking after one hour? Some random energy saver setting whi

    If you're running "Cocktail," or anything else that periodically "purges" memory, remove it according to the developer's instructions. Back up all data before making any changes.
    If you're starting up from an aftermarket SSD that you or a previous owner installed (not an original-equipment SSD installed at the factory), check the manufacturer's website for a firmware update, and if there is one, apply it.
