MBP Hard-drive / Fan Noise

My macbook pro has started to make a funny noise, at first I thought it was the fan, but it's on the left hand side of the trackpad so I am assuming it's the hard drive?
It sounds like a fan / slight grinding noise it's not too loud but it's noticeable and irritating.
Anyone had this issue before or have any suggestions on how to fix?
I've not long had my machine back from a previous repair and I can't afford to loose it for another month, I'm a freelance designer, last time I took it to my apple reseller store (Bristol) and was told it would be fixed in a week, it ended up being a month, and that resulted in my loosing a month wages. What are my options?

Also, get a firewire external hard drive and baak up all your data and keep it backed up, just in case. In the meantime, you could use the Disk Utility on your install disc #1 to verify and repair if necessary both permissions and the start up disk.
There is also a little utility called "SMART Reporter" that you might like:
http://homepage.mac.com/julianmayer/smartreporter/index.html
This will allow you to install a hard drive icon in your menu bar that will let you monitor the SMART status of your hard drive. SMART status doesn't guarantee your hard drive has no problems, but if the icon turns from green to red you know you have to worry.
Good luck!

  • IMac 21.5 hard drive fan increases speed after HDD Replacement

The hard drive on my iMac 21.5 failed two months out of warranty, so I decided to replace it myself.  I replaced the drive with a duplicate of what was already in the iMac, which is a Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200.  The replacement and restore went well, however, now the hard drive fan slowly increases speed during operation, until I assume it reaches maximum RPMs.  The increase in fan speed happens regardless of how busy the unit is.  This is not particularly a problem, but the noise at maximum RPMs is annoying and I assume the life of the fan will be shortened.  I ran the Apple Hardware Test and received the error "4SNS/1/40000000:TH00-9.000" which I've seen from another post that this may or may not indicate a problem with the thermal sender unit on the HDD.  During installation I was careful to verify the proper orientation of the thermal sensor cable, so doubtful that is the problem.  Is there a way to definitively determine whether the thermal sensor is bad on the HDD, or do I need some type of Apple-specific firmware installed on the HDD?

Beginning in late 2009 Apple began using HD's that had the heat sensor integrated into it, if you are absolutely positive your replacement drive has an integrated sensor in it then your problem might be solved by doing a SMC reset. If you haven't done one before here are the instructions:
    SMC RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

You were told wrong. Apple considers the hard drive and RAM to be user-replaceable parts. If they didn't, they wouldn't provide instructions for changing them yourself.
What type of HDD would you reccomend me purchasing? Looking to get something 750GB+
I favor Seagate. Others have different preferences. Avoid so-called "green" drives.

  • 3 months old MBP & hard drive crashes - Does Apple really cares????

3 months old MBP hard drive simply crash and died on me, when sent to Apple centre the lady only concern is why didn't I purchase a apple care protection plan. Telling me other failures may result in costly replacement of parts and long lead time after warranty period. It seems to me Apple really cares is to make money and more of it.
I have been using PCs all my life, when the whole world was trying to stop me from getting a MAC. I went ahead believing that Apple have taken steps to improve their product. All my previous laptops works perfertly fine for at least 3 years. My reasoning is MBP cannot be such a lousy product that cannot last that long. Or is Apple confirming the truth that their MACs will not last their users anything more than 1 year thus encouraging users to buy additonal warranty.
The question is "Is Apple product so unreliable that we have to buy additional protection plan from day 1"
I hope some one can give me some answers, it is not about the money but the data that stores inside that has become too damaging for my business.

"Is Apple product so unreliable that we have to buy additional protection plan from day 1"
By no means. Don't take some salesperson's attempt to push AppleCare on you as any indication other than her personal opinion. Sometimes things break. It's unfortunate, but it happens. If things didn't fail, we wouldn't need warranties at all. And with electronic devices it's more likely to happen early in their life than it would be later. I might point out that Apple buys hard drives from the same companies that every other computer manufacturer does, so the hard drives have exactly the same chance of failure in a Mac as they would have in any other computer. And you have a one-year warranty on your computer so having the extended warranty at this point is irrelevant.
s Apple confirming the truth that their MACs will not last their users anything more than 1 year thus encouraging users to buy additonal warranty.
No more than any other company that sells an extended warranty for their product is saying that. If you want to purchase an extended warranty, it's up to you. The majority of computer owners, for almost any brand, never have need for a warranty at all, much less an extended warranty. But out-of-warranty repairs can be expensive enough - and again, this is true of any computer, particularly laptop computers where the components tend to be more expensive - that many people opt for extended warranties to ensure that for the duration of the extended warranty there will be no unexpected failures and consequent costs. It's like buying fire insurance for your house; the likelihood that your house will catch fire is small, but the cost involved if you don't have insurance is so great that I'd wager you do indeed have fire insurance if you own a house.
it is not about the money but the data that stores inside that has become too damaging for my business.
That's why you make backups. Any hard drive can fail. Or your laptop might get lost or stolen which would of course not be Apple's fault nor the fault of any of their component suppliers.

  • Excessive hard drive seek noise

Any ideas?  Since a few days ago my (2 month old) T500 has been bugging the heck out of me (understatement) with this constant hard drive seek noise.  You normally expect short bursts of it when accessing large amounts of data etc. but this has been literally non-stop, anytime the computer is on (regardless if anyone is actually doing anything on it).

    Hello timosy,
it would be helpfull if you can tell us your OS and did you install anything before this did happen?
Also I would suggest to download Process Explorer from Microsoft page and tell us, which process make your hdd running that way.

  • Hard drive fan comes on full blast for no apparent reason!

I have had this problem since buying my new 27in iMac. It happens maybe once or twice a month. I took it to apple and they said "everything is ok".
I come home from work at night and the machine sounds like a leaf blower on my desk. I pull up iStat widget and it reports the following
    CPU:
    User 0%
    System 0%
    Nice 0%
    Idle 99-100%
    Memory:
    Wired 587mb
    Active 764mb
    Inactive 301mb
    Free 2.29gb
    Temps:
    HD Macintosh 95
    CPU 86
    Ambient 65
    GPU diode 103
    GPU heatsink 101
    mem contoller 103
    Northbridge 131
    Optical 92
    Fans:
    Optical Drive 998rpm
    Hard Drive 5272rpm
    CPU 940
So it is obvious that the HD fan is the one making all the noise, the question is why is it running at that rpm? The machine is cool to the touch and has been at idle all night. Mac Genious had me reset the SMC in several different ways and if that didnt work, bring it in to the store. I did, and he said everything looks fine and passed all diagnostics. He said next time it happens to go into activity monitor and see what is creating the most CPU usage NOT ONE TASK IS USING MORE THAN .9% of CPU. I see nothing out of the ordinary in there. I think a fix for this would be to figure out why the unit doesnt ever actually go to sleep on its own. As soon as I force it to sleep the fans stop and when I wake it they stay off.

  • How to eliminate hard drive whirring noise?

My hard drive has recently started emitting a fan-like noise (in fact, when I first noticed it I thought it was the fan). The sound comes from under the right wrist pad and when I put my wrist on it (e.g. when typing) the noise is greatly diminished (about 20% of what it is without my wrist on it).
My Macbook used to be completely silent, this is loud enough that I can hear it in a coffee shop.
Any fix for this, and what do you think this signals for my drive? Is it a bad sign that it's whirring can be heard audibly?

    Hi there,
buying a new harddrive won't help, i'm afraid. I have the same issue - I might be a bit pedantic (because the noise is just a slight "blowing" sound. But it drives me mad to know, that it just needs to put my wrist on the machine to get the noise go down to a bearable level.
I bought several new harddrives - but they were even more noisy than the original Hitatchi one. I realized, that when you just slightly put your fingernail on the running (non-apple) harddrives surface, that sound gets less noisy. Then I realized, that apple glued a black foil on their drive that does what my fingernail did on the other drives That is the reason why the original drive is less noisy compared to the new ones. But ****- it still makes me mad
Now I look for such a foil to glue it to my new drive - just to get the status quo with the new drive. But was not successful so far to find one.
Sorry, that I can't provide an answer - but just wanted to say, that buying a new drive does not really solve your problem.
Maybe someone can tell me where to buy one of those incredible foils :-))

  • Hard drive fan speed

When I had just 1 hard drive in my Mac Pro the computer was nearly silent. The fans almost didnt move at all. I now have 4 hard drives in the system and the Pro has a considerable hum. Not terribly loud, but noticeable. Is this because the fans will naturally move faster when there are more hard drives in it?

Sometimes conduction can carry vibrations to other parts of the chassis. One user reported that his drive sled washers were doing their job, but that the "pull handle" portion of each drive sled was touching the rail above, and that vibration was being conducted to that rail (which acted as a resonator).
His solution was to bend each sled into a very slight concave-down shape to provide a small clear space between the rail above and the "pull handle" on each sled.
Another user reported that the side door was vibrating. Placing a wad of folded paper towel between the door and the processor shelf seemed to damp out that vibration and reduce the noise.

  • 1 day old mbp, hard drive crackle normal?

I've been waiting to pick up a MBP for several weeks now and last night I finally bit the bullet.
I've read about the whine issues, heat issues and crackling speakers that some have experienced.
Last night when running updates, I noticed that the hard drive crackles/buzzes when reading/writing. I know hearing the hard drive is normal but the sound isn't of the drive spinning but more of a scratchy irregular buzz.
Noise only happens when access the HD, like starting apps...it's just that I've never heard anything similar, I'm used to hearing hard drives whine while they spin.
Only way I can explain the sound would be it's similar to the sound effects in movies when a spider would crawl around the floor, but only in 2 seconds spurts.
Maybe I'm just paranoid because I love the machine but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts...btw if i remember correctly it's a week 17 machine.
    -gabe

Sound is normal. Certain drives are louder then others, the ones that Apple uses are known to be particularly loud. It shouldn't be regular at all but instead a sporadic sounds whenever the drive is written to or read from. If the sound does become noticeably louder or changes its pattern, it could be an indication of a drive failure. If you are worried about the status of your drive, you can check the SMART status, which will inform you on the drives overall health.

  • 13" MBP - vibrates and fan noise

After a month of perfection, my 13" MBP has started to make a quiet low pitched motor vibration noise: kind of as if a CD was in the drive (there isn't). The whole laptop is vibrating which makes it a little awkward to type on.
The pitch changes when the angle of the laptop is changed - at certain angles the noise stops. The noise progressively gets quieter... after about 30 minutes of use it has gone completely.
It's back when the machine is switched off and switched back on again.
Apple support had no solution - they just made me reset a few things.
Was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar?

Very disappointed with Apple on this one - all the support guy could suggest was resetting the SMC/PRAM/whatever ... or take it to the nearest Apple repair shop - 45 min from here.
In the end I removed the bottom cover, popped the fan out and took it apart - applied a tiny amount of grease and reassembled and reinstalled. Awful fan noise completely gone.
** Doing this may affect your warranty - I may or may not have done the above. **

  • How do I import my library from an external disk to my new MBP hard drive?

My old MBP was running out of space so I exported my Aperture library (250GB) to an external drive.  I just replaced my old computer with a new MBP with a 1TB flash drive.  Now that I have the space, I want to put my library back on my computer but I can't figure out how bring it in from my external hard drive.  Any ideas?  Many thanks.

Why do you say " I exported my Aperture library"? Did you actually use "File > Export > Items as new Library" in Aperture to create a new library on your external drive? A simple drag and drop of the library should have sufficed. What is your Aperture version?

Connect your external drive and use the Finder to drag the Aperture library from the external drive back to the Pictures folder.
Then double-click the library to point Aperture to the new location and open the copied library in Aperture.
If your Aperture library uses referenced originals, select the referenced images and use the command File > Consolidate originals"  to move the originals back to your internal disk.
If you should encounter any error messages (like error -36) while moving the library to the internal drive, post back.

  • Hard drive scratching noises?

I've had my mac book for about 7 months now and i haven't had any problems until now. about a week ago my macbook began to make strange scratching noises whenever i did anything that required a lot of processing power like editing a large photoshop file, it would then freeze and i would have to restart my macbook. the scratching sounds seem to be coming from the hard-drive. now its getting really bad, it even freezes when i try to watch a long video on youtube and the only way to stop it is to turn my macbook off and on again. does anyone have any suggestions, its still under warranty so i could take it back to the shop but i just wanted to make sure there was nothing i could do to fix it.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Those kind of sounds are normal during heavy use. But if it continues to make the sound at all times then your hard drive might become a dud. You should backup your drive/data and try to Repair Permissions via Disk Utility.

  • MBP hard drive beeps after Snow Leopard Upgrade, just like the unibody

After upgrading my MBP to Snow, it is now beeping from the hard drive every 10-15 seconds, just like the videos that were posted of unibody MBPs beeping in 10.5.8 (which Apple released a firmware update for).
Just wondering if anybody else is experiencing this?

sure. I'm using seagate 500gb hdd. But still better than 10.5 where I can not start the system at all.

  • Upgrade MBP Hard Drive and NCQ...

    Hi Everyone,
I just spent an hour searching and can't find any information on my question. Earlier this year I upgraded a MacBook (not Pro) with a Western Digital Scorpio 250 GB (5400 RPM) drive, and found out that it didn't support NCQ (based on System Profiler). So now, here I am, on the verge of grabbing the new Scorpio "Black" 320GB hard drive for my MacBook Pro, and I can't find any information if this drive supports NCQ. I am sure it is trivial froma useage standpoint if it doesn't, but it is the kind of thing that will bug me. Does anybody have this drive installed, and can you check System Profiler and see if NCQ is supported? Thanks!
    Rich S.

I installed the same drive in my machine, but I am thinking there is something wrong with it.. Did you notice a stronger vibration than when you had your original hard drive in the MBP?
