MBP i5 slow
Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me out here.
Something really weird is actually happing. When I boot (MBP 2.3GHz i5 8GB ram 1TB HD - OS X 10.7.1) everything is super fast:
Apps only "jump" once in the dock and they open immediately (except for Preview when opening .tiff images).
After using the MBP for about 20 minutes everything gets extremely slow, including native Apps like Mail, Safari, etc...
I repaired the disk (usage: 49% free) using Disk Utility, DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro.
I repaired permissions and reset the PRam twice.
The problem persisted, so I erased the HD, installed Lion back and migrated from external HD.
Same problem, nothing changed.
On a 100GB Mac OS X partition (I just installed the OS) the problem is still there. It is **** slow after a little while.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,

A fresh install on a different drive works for a longer time and then it'll be the same as my main drive.
And this is while your offline?
And what model is your MacBook Pro?
Look under Apple menu > About this Mac > More info should be something like MacBook Pro 4,1 like that.
There is a serious issue with 2011 Mac's with the latest EFI 2.2 firmware update check that also
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
If your still having issues regardless of the drive, fresh installs (nothing else), or if offline or online, then it's sounds like the EFI 2.2 firmware update for 2011 Mac's and if so a logicboard replacement is in order.
If not to all of those, I dont' know what it is, sounds like some other hardware issue.
Perform a hardware test, reset the SMC, Pram reset

You are over working your RAM. Your machine should be able to take more RAM.
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

MBP Very Slow & No Keyboard Backlighting Option
Problem description:
MBP very slow on start up and generally post yosemite upgrade; also, no keyboard backlighting option in System Preferences and f5, f6 keys have stopped functioning. All post Yosemite. I have tried resetting SMC and NVRAM with no result. Not sure what else to do? If anyone has a solution, please share. Thanks!

Mid-2010 MBP super slow with 10.9.4 & lots of backups on disk
After four years of recovering beautifully from spills and falls, I think my overly ambitious software updates may have done in my mid 2010 MacBook Pro.
Aside from the usual Internet and word processing, I use my MBP for video editing.
About two months ago, I finally upgraded from Snow Leopard (10.6) to Mavericks (10.9.3) because I wanted to switch from FinalCut Pro X (and my torrented FCP7) to Adobe Premiere CC. I immediately downloaded several Creative Cloud applications and noticed a bit of slowdown, especially when using Premiere. Figuring the Creative Cloud video apps were too much for my old MBP, I deleted everything except Photoshop and Muse, and I purchased a desktop PC for video editing on Premiere (waiting for it to arrive).
I deleted several Creative Cloud applications and about 100 GB of video files (transferred from my Mac HD to an external HD). Immediately after, I saw an available software update and clicked it, upgrading me to the new Mavericks 10.9.4. Right after that, the Creative Cloud desktop app stopped working, so I reinstalled it.
After that, my MBP slowed down considerably. It takes 10-20 minutes to open any application, including Activity Monitor and Disk Utility.
I backed up using Time Machine (took about 8 hours), and I repaired the disk using Disk Utility. Repairing the disk hasn't sped anything up.
I know my hard drive is way too full, but I can't figure out why so much of it is going to backups. Since my hard drive is more than 80% full, shouldn't Time Machine automatically delete local images to bring it back to 80% at the very least? I'm using my external hard drive for Time Machine backups, so I don't know why so many are on Mac HD.
I can think of so many things that could be wrong - I only have 4GB RAM, my hard drive is almost full, and I probably shouldn't have installed Mavericks on such an old system in the first place - I'm not quite sure how to start fixing this problem. I'd like to be able to continue using my laptop for web browsing, MS Office Suite, FCPX, and FCP7. I'd be fine with reinstalling Snow Leopard (I still have the DVD), as long as the files on my hard drive are still accessible.
I'm planning to go to a repair specialist on Monday, but if anyone has advice on fixes I can do in the meantime or things I can do to make his life easier, I'd really appreciate it!

I have the same model MacBook Pro as you, and I’m running OS X 10.9.4 on mine without problems. I’d highly recommend that you upgrade your RAM; our model can work with 16 GB of RAM when Mac OS X 10.7.5 or newer is installed. I’ve got 8 GB in mine, but I’m not doing any video editing; you’d probably find 16 GB to be best. If your video editing is disk-bound, then you’d also benefit by replacing your internal HDD with a SSD. -
Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks
Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

I understand it says my RAM is way too low, but hve no idea what's killing it. So far I've disabled and uninstalled all DynDNS items. I just read about Chrome's slow performance for MBP's and plan to switch back to Safari (Firefox made my computer even slower).
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.
Oscar.Thank you Kappy, while I was reviewing the log from EtreCheck I noticed the 3rd party preference panes, launchers and daemos. I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.

Wireless on My New MBP super slow
Hi everyone, I just bought a shiny new 15" Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, love it except my wireless is super slow when using it on my home network. I know I'm not the first to complain of this and that there are plenty of other threads about it, but I've tried some of the solutions on those thread to no avail. So I'm starting my own, can someone please help, I'm dangerously close to doing something irrational to my MBP. Ok here's a breakdown of my problem:
-I'm using a Belkin pre N1 router.
-I pay for 10mbs but I'm getting .5mbs using Airport but if I plug in the ethernet I achieve around 9mbs
-Airport shows a full signal
-My old IMac runs like a stallion on my network using Airport, so does my roommates Vista machine both getting around 8.5mbs
-I've made sure my IMac's and Macbook Pro settings are the same
-I've tried using an open dns, didn't work
-I've change my router from using a WEP to using a WPA, didn't work
-I've tried changing the broadcast signal from 11N/G to just 11N to 11N/G/B to 11G/B to 11B back to 11N/G, when I broadcasted just N wireless speed jump all the way up to 8mbs hooraay!!! until I quit safari and opened it again wireless speed went back to .5mps
-I've tried using every wireless channel 1-11 plus Auto, Again wireless speed jump all the way up to 8mbs hooraay!!! until I quit safari and opened it again wireless speed went back to .5mps
-I've tried doing a special little dance in front of it, didn't work except to make me ready to drop it like its hot this Saturday!!!
Nothing seems to work. I'm making a Apple genus appointment tomorrow but I have a sneaky feeling that it will be fine on their network and they'll tell me it's belkins problem. Which could be the case but why would my IMac and Vista computers work flawless and not my new MacBook. Please, please, please help. Theres plenty of praise for whomever can solve my problem and I can praise like no other. Thanks
-Jerry-yup, same here. Brand new, Core i7 Macbook Pro, and my 13" White Core Duo (not even C2D) Macbook kicks its a** on Airport. What's up with that????
I've tried all the previous "fixes" I could find -- wipe and re-install, delete and replace AirPort entry in Network panel, new Location in Network panel, and so on. This is pretty bad... I haven't tried different DNS yet, but I don't see why the DNS should make any difference when my Mac Pro and the old Macbook seem fine with the servers from my ISP.

i have a 2010 mbp and i cant run games that i was able to run flawlessly a couple months ago im not sure if iv done somethin to cause this issue i really only use my comp to watch movies and videos nothin that i would think would slow it the way it has if someone could give me some advise as to how to get it running 100% again it would be much appreciated
Use this as a trouble shooting guide:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3521
Check the status of your HDD. Open DisK Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair. Also is the HDD full? Often that is a problem.
Try a Safe Boot:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Often third party applications have a negative affect on performance. Performance or cleaning apps as well as anti-virus apps are often the culprit and should be deleted.
Ciao.
You might also open Activity Monitor and examine if additional RAM might be useful.
Note that Macs are not good gaming machines.

MBP getting slow and sliuggish.
Hello
I hope this is the right forum to post this but I'm new to MAC, having bought my first MBP. I also use Final Cut Express.
My external drive is a LaCie 500gb usb/Fw400/|FW800/eSata and contains all my video files as well as being the time machine backup (not a good idea! ).
Anyway I thought I heard we really don't need to "clean-out-the-trash" like we do on PC, ie; defragging deleting temp files and the like. However I am noticing that my MBP seems to be slowing down and getting a bit sluggish. Not the peppy thing it was when I bought it 3 months ago.
Mainly doing video editing and right now have a project with 11 hours of DV video on the timeline in FCE.
My question is should I be defragging the drives? What other utilities do I need to find and run regularly or does Leapord take care of these things automatically? if so when? A friend told me I had to leave my MBP on all night because Leapord runs it's maintainence at night.
I'm a bit confused here. Could someone straighten me out a bit?
Thanks
AllenHi
Thanks. What happened was when I booted with the recovery discs, my main screen came up and the boot disc was in a seperate window. I just did it again. PUt in my MAC OS-x Install disc 1. It's in it's own window and there's no menu bar at the top of the window. A the top ofthe screen is my Finder menu bar. The only choices to click on this window is "Install MAC OS-x and Bundled Software.app", or Install Bundled Sofftware only, Below those icons is 2 grey folders, opeional installs and instructions.
Again should I somehow have made an emergency boot disk?
I'm using Disc 1 of the 2 discs that came with the MBP.
Sorry if I'm not understanding something here.
Coming from PC's when you use a boot disc you don't get any part of your main window showing up. Maybe thats confusing me.

Older but upgraded MBP running slow... no obvious cause.
Hello all and thanks in advance for anything you have to share.
My mid-2007 15" MBP has gotten slow in basic finder functions and opening/switching/closing programs with no obvious bottleneck. I use Activity Monitor regularly, and there is often a very low CPU load, never any RAM pressure (which I find suspicious, but I do have 6 GB installed), and I'm not running any particularly high demand software (usually Safari with a few tabs open, mail, Word or maybe Excel).
I'm considering doing a clean install of Yosemite (currently running Mav), but I wish I knew if there were anything else causing a particular bottleneck at the moment. If you can tell me exactly what/why I'm running slow (i.e. some hardware issue that will force me to upgrade), that's fine, I just want to know what it is. Even as I'm typing these letters, I'm typing 2 or 3 words faster than the text appears on the screen, yet the CPU is running around 20% and RAM indicates 3.6 out of 6 GB used.
System profile below from EtreCheck. Thanks in advance for any help!
Problem description:
General slowness and lag opening programs, switching windows/programs, etc. Not related to download speeds. No obvious cause, processor usage and memory pressure (RAM) both appear fine/low most of the time, yet computer is just slow.

Mini Controlled by MBP very Slow
Hi all,
i control my headless Mini with my MBP and sometimes although my wifi is at 7MB up/1.5MB down speeds the respond time for communication from MBP to Mini is exceptionally slow. On Screen Share on the MBP i do something or press a command on the Mini and it takes minutes to respond. Any ideas why? What to look for? Utilities i can track whats happening?
Mini is the MC815B/A model with maximum memory, 8GBs if i remember rightly....The 2.3GHz model only came with 2GB, so yes it very well could be the lack of RAM.
see > Mac mini (Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications
Use the Activity Monitor to check for RAM usage and look for a failed process.
see > Activity Monitor Demystified | Mactuts+
It can upgraded to as much as 16GB.

MBP suddenly SLOW wifi connect!! help
All of a sudden the wifi speeds on my MBP are very, very slow. Like 100-300kbps when on the very same home wifi network my iPhone gets 3mbps down.
Is there any thing on my MBP I can check, config settings???
thanks for any help!!I have this very same issue. I have the MR814v2 from Netgear (fairly old now but still works very well with other machines). I have a Powerbook G4, a Windows XP machine with a Netgear adapter and the new MBP 15.4 all connected to the same router.
The data transfer of both the G4 and the PC are fast but the MBP is frustratingly slow.
I checked the activity monitor and found that Skype had some 23 threads running. I terminated both Skype and Adium. This made maybe slight improvements but not much.
I also turned off the firewall on the MBP but this too makes little difference.
Does anyone have any further suggestions?
Is there a known fault with the MBP Airport? -
MBP suddenly slow/lagging - pls somebody skilled with EtreCheck tell me what's wrong?
I love ASC for hands-on advice to try oneself however this time I am in it too deep: My sons MBP suddenly became lagging and unresponsive/very very slow... ie. the swirl-thing comes up 1-2 secs AFTER clicking the apple-icon and the menu yet another 6-10 secs. Below is a copy from EtreCheck, pls help me understand it - never used it before.. My other MBPs could be optimized as well but at least they perform ok... this one is bad. Who to blame? Me, my son or thirdparty?

0 B Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Early 2011 MBP running slow on Mavericks
My MBP is considerably slower since installing Mavericks. A start-up takes nearly 2 minutes now. Running multiple applications, and switching between them, will result in spinning beachballs. Viewing a video inside a browser window will grind the entire system to a halt. Below is my EtreCheck report. Any suggestions are appreciated.

0 B Page-outsAfter performing some general housekeeping, I'm happy to say my MBP's performance has improved. Besides the general cleanup, I stopped using Google Talk within the browser and integrated it into the native Messages app. I also removed the unnecessary MySQLCOM from the startup items. And as mentioned above, I removed GPG Tools. I also disabled Dropbox on startup, but have since re-enabled it, as it made no difference in performance.
From the time I press the power button, it takes about 55 seconds before the white startup screen gives way to the UI. It takes another 60 - 120 seconds to get the first app/program running and functional, depending on the app/program. This is a great improvement over before. But prior to installing Mavericks, it took about 10 seconds and 30 seconds, respectively.
So at this point, I wonder if there's anything else I can do to speed things up, besides install more memory. I'm not even sure if more memory would help with the startup process. I've pasted my latest EtreCheck below.

After install Yosemite, MBP be slow without the charger
Hello!
When I was install Maverick in my MBP it worked bad when it unplugged of the electricity, it work really slow, work like a jumps. but when the computer was plugged to the charger work perfectly.
Well, this had a easy and quick solution:
I had to look in "System > Library > Extensions" and here show the content of the pack "IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext"
Next, "Contents > Plugins" and show the content of "ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext " and one time more "Contents > Resources" and here look the file to the computer (in my case) "MacBookPro8,1.plist" and remove.
Ok, this work perfectly. The MBP work 100% nice without plugged in the electricity.
Now I upgrade to Yosemite and the same problem appear. The MBP it worked bad when it unplugged of the electricity so I try to do the same.
But which is my surprise? Yosemite don't have the same files and I'm lost to fix this.
Please, any solution??
Thanks in advanceAny Idea? please I work outside many times with my computer and work like that is a bull....t
I need Help ! -
Its been two weeks now, I have installed the Lion OSX 10.7.1. Everday whenever I wake it up from the sleep mode the MBP opens so slowly. It takes about 5 minutes to come on its early stage. Before it wasnt like that. Very quick and fast before.
Backup your files to a external drive and c boot off the 10.6 disk and use Disk Utiltiy to erase the whole drive, format HFS+ journaled and then quit, install 10.6
Set the drive name and user name the same as before. Log in and Software Update to 10.6.8
The install your programs from fresh sources again, then finally return your user files to their respective folders (Music, Pictures etc).
Your computer will be fast and stable again, Lion has tested slower than Snow Leopard and it's glitchy too right now, perhaps 6 months later it will be fast again. -
MBP keeps slowing down after some uptime
I bought my MBP less than a month ago, and after about two days of uptime it starts to slow down dramatically. Apps become unresponsive and/or respond too slowly and performance as a whole is very bad.
I'm running Lion on the 13'' Core i5 with 4 gigs of RAM. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Friends of mine who have older MBPs get great performance even after much longer uptimes (like a week on end).I bought my MBP less than a month ago, and after about two days of uptime it starts to slow down dramatically.
