  • New MBP 13 inch. Question on battery

    Hello!
I got the MBP 13 inch few days ago and notice how fast the battery goes down. However, I'm sure that's normal on MBP?
Anyway, my question is: Any tips on improving the battery life?
    Thank you,

  • Capture with new MBP, plus Pen Tool Question...

Good Day everyone, I've searched the forums but have not been able to find my answer so I thought I'd post.
    Question 1...
I've just received my new 17"MBP a few weeks ago. With my old PB, I would connect my camera via FW400 and capture the footage to an external LaCie drive via FW800 out of the computer.
Now with only one FW port on the MBP, it looks as though I need to capture via FW800 (4pin to 9pin) and go out to the LaCie via USB? Is this correct? How are any of you doing this. It bums me out that I can't go out FW800 to the drive. I suppose there is always the option of getting an Express Card 34 with FW800 connections?
    Question 2...
Why can I not get my pen tool to work in the timeline? I want to adjust opacity and audio levels but am unable to do this. My old version of FCP (v5) seemed to let me do this. Overlays are 'on'? Any suggestions? I find it easier and faster to be able to do these functions from the timeline, there must be a way?
    FYI...
    New 17" MBP 2.66 w/4GB RAM
    FCP (Studio2)
I'm sure question 2 is just something stupid that I just haven't set up.
    Appreciate everyone's help as always!
    Rene.

To be honest, nobody but Apple knows what Apple is thinking but usb is not a good alternative. I also don't know of too many professional post houses or broadcast studios that have anything to do with firewire infrastructure at all. You can get firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter cables for cheap, search the internet. You can then daisy chain your camera/capture device in line with your storage device.
The better alternative is to get a express firewire card for your MacBook pro as you mentioned which would create two firewire buses; one for capturing, one for storage. Again, you can search the internet and here's a place to get you started http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/FW800E34/
I guess I would have thought maybe some research into a product of the expense of the MacBook Pro would have warranted some research about these things.

  • New MBP Penryn HD Benchmarks

I just came across something kinda weird and I wanted to other opinions on it.
I have a brand new stock 15" Penryn MBP with the 2.4 GHz processor. (the $2k model) I have it upgraded with 4 Gigs of ram and that is the only mod to it. I have no problems with the machine and it runs great. I am very happy with it.
For fun I decided to run some benchmarks on it to compare it to my 24" iMac that I bought in January to see how they weigh against one another. What I found was some troubling results from the hard drive. Maybe these are normal but it surprises me.
First I used XBench for the tests. The stats that I find troublesome are the disk numbers.
    MBP scores.
    Internal HD 31.xx
    Firewire 800 44.xx
    iMac scores
    Internal HD 64.xx
    Firewire 800 44.xx
Now I am not new to hardware and I know the internal drive is a 5400 rpm on the MBP. I never expected the drive performance to be similar to the iMac....but to have fw800 perform 50% better??
That just doesn't seem right. Am I wrong for thinking that's a problem? Or do I have an issue here. I don't know where to look to find comparable stats so any insight or places to look would be very helpful.

    ... an attached FW800 drive????
And what is INSIDE the FW800 drive????
I have an external FW400 drive that contains a 500GB/7,200RPM WD drive that blew the socks off my old PBG4 with a 5,400RPM drive, which is why when I got my new MBP, I custom ordered it with the 7,200RPM option, even though I lost 50GB of space in the deal. With the new hardware, the internal drive will outperform the external, cause SATA outperforms even FW800 and both drives are of the same spindle speed.
Many know-it-all's will pooh-pooh the fast drives, but in a general use computer, I/O is a significant part of the workflow and 7,200 vs. 5,400 is a 33% difference, not to be sneezed at.

  • MBP i7 istat temperature question

    My very first post!
anyways, quick question....i recently installed istat on my mbp and the temperature section lists 2 memory controllers, one is at ~36 C at the other at ~94 C. Why are there two memory controllers and why is there such a big temperature difference?? this is under light workload btw

reinstalled istat and now only showing one "memory controller" at "normal" temp.
perhaps the high temp. at ~94c caused the istat to freeze.
anyone else ever have this problem?

  • Upgrading my MBP to SSD today, question...

So, my plan is to fresh install Lion on it when I get it, but my question is this.  Am I better off, since I'm using a fresh Lion install to also install all my apps from scratch instead of using the migration assistant after Lion is installed?  Is it irrelevant?  (I have noticed that when I delete programs, the amount of space they should free up, they seem not to, so was thinkin fresh installs of everything would give me back some space?)
Also, any reason not to delete the printer driver file (~2.0gb) and just install the one driver I need?
Any other space saving tips that might help me out on my new SSD (going from 320 to 180gb)?
Thanks in advance for the help!

    Nope

  • 13.3" MBP Audio line in Question

I have a 13.3 md-2009 MBP and want to do some recording on the laptop. I want to transfer some music from LPs to the laptop but do not know whether the headphone/audio line in accepts stereo?
I thought I read that it only will record in mono, but the separate audio in line on the 15" MBP will record stereo. Is this true? If so, how else can I record stereo into my laptop? Should I use something from M-Audio?
    Thanks

hmmm, so... what i have set up now is a tv next to my imac 27 and alot of times ill play games late into the night at which time i will through on my headphones... before i had the tv it was easy.. all the sound came from the computer and using the headphones was fine... now i have the computer and the TV to quiet... is there any software that you can think of that would allow me to mix the two sources on the computer?

  • Upgrade MBP HD...question about interface

I need some advice from those of you who have upgraded drives in their MBPs.
I have a 17" MBP with the stock Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 160Gig drive. The interface speed is 1.5 Gigabit/sec.
I know Hitachi makes the Travelstar 7K320 in both 1.5Gb/s 3Gb/s, but I can't find a 1.5Gb anywhere. Is the 3Gb/s drive backward compatible with the 1.5Gb interface?
    Thanks for your advice...
    Lew

A 3Gb/s drive is backwards compatible. You should be fine with any 2.5" SATA 3Gb/s drive.

  • Buying a new MBP - hard drive repacement questions...

Does replacing the HD in a new MBP void the warranty? I've searched the forums but it seems there's no firm answer. Basically if I buy a new 13" I want to upgrade the HD (I Think) to the 500GB 7200 Drive (probably Seagate momentus), but I'm concerned about heat and noise issues. is there a huge performance boost between the offered 500 GB 5400 Drive? I am planing on buying the $1400 version so I get the 4GB RAM and the faster processor to start with. Is that worth the price? What about battery life - I'm concerned now that it's not replaceable that a 7200 drive would waste that battery too quickly.

Go with 500 GB, the Seagate is fine. The 7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm will give a modest performance boost, and there is really minimal additional heat, noise and power consumption with a faster spinning drive (it might mean 10 minutes shorter run time of the 5-7 hours from a full battery charge).
Be sure to order the drive without the G-force protection. The MBP has it's own internal accelerometer, and the two may conflict, so get the drive that lacks that feature.
Instructions for DIY HDD swap are on p. 37 of the manual:

  • MBP r.2 Memory question

I have a second revision MBP (C2D - 2.16Ghz). I remember reading that it could only support 3GB's of RAM. Is this a chipset limitation or a Tiger limitation? I am now running leopard and am looking to upgrade to 4GB's if possible. I have read that both memory slots will accept the larger 2GB memory modules so that really only leaves a chipset limitation. I've googled all over for this and can't really get a straight answer.

  • Processor benchmark question

Hi - does anyone know of any benchmark data comparing G5 power to the new Core 2 Duo? I have a dual 1.8 G5 PowerMac and I'm interested in the new 24" iMac. I understand that the iMac processor is a "laptop" version and not the "conroe" - just curious if it is less tha, equal too or greater in power to what i have. Thanks.
    Steve

    http://www.geekpatrol.ca/blog/74/
The Intel dual cores are about the same performance as a Dualcore Powermac G5 2.5
    http://www.systemshootouts.org/processors.html
However, they are hoobled by a slow bus, the iMac is not upgradable with faster boot drives or video cards like the PowerMac G5 is.
I doubt very much you'll see a noticeable improvement between your machine and a Intel dual core iMac for general use. Perhaps it could shave some time if your doing something longterm processor intensive.
But you'll have to buy all new universal versions of your software.
Wait for the Dual Quads and BlueRay DVD drives to come out, yea 8 cores and 100GB per dvd disk, that's worth upgrading for.
The pitiful little iMac performance increase is not worth the cash.

  • MBP switch to SDD questions

I got my MBP two weeks ago coming with the Lion but without SDD. I want to use the SDD now.
First, can I just add the SDD disk to my MBP without removing my old disk?
Second, if I had to remove the old one, do I need to buy the Lion or the Apple Store can give me one?
Third, do I have to get the SDD from Apple Store?
    Thanks guys

No, but you can clone your hard drive to the SSD if the HDD isn't too full. But if that isn't convenient, then you can reinstall Lion onto the new drive. Put either the SSD or the HDD into an external enclosure for notebook SATA drives (or you can also get these USB to SATA drive adaptors.) Here's the general process:
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Shutdown the computer.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    Step Five: Install Lion
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.
Select Reinstall Lion from the menu and click on the Install button. When the installer appears you can switch from the boot drive (HDD) to the SSD as the destination. This will result in Lion being installed on the SSD.
The computer will start automatically once Lion has been installed, and should boot from the SSD.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

  • Transferring HD to new i5 MBP - Snow Leopard OS Question

    Hi all,
I'd like to transfer my old HD from a Core 2 Duo MBP to my new Core i5 MBP. I have 10.6.4 on my old drive.
Are there any issues running the 10.6.4 system from the old drive on the new i5? Perhaps drivers for the new graphics system or CPU?
    Thnaks!
    Sasha

Connect the two with a Firewire cable. Boot the old computer into Target Disk Mode, then boot the new computer normally. The hard drive icon for the old computer should appear on the new computer's Desktop. Now open Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder and use it to move your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences to the new computer.
