MBP intel -- ppc compatible?

My mbp is a year old, with the magsafe connexion. Can I take the battery out of this machine (10.4.11) and stick it in a mbp ppc (10.4.9) 1.75 yrs old and charge it? I left the magsafe cord at home for the holidays and my sister has a mbp ppc and I want to charge up in that.

*"Can I take the battery out of this machine (10.4.11) and stick it in a mbp ppc (10.4.9) 1.75 yrs old and charge"*
There is no such thing as an "mpb ppc." Powerbooks were PowerPC based. All MacBook and MacBook Pro's are Intel based. They use different batteries and power adapters.
So unless your sister definitely has a MacBook Pro, and not a PowerBook, you're out of luck.

  • Can't import MBP (intel) Mac-mail, into G5 (PPC) Mac-mail

I recently sold my MBP (intel), and have the cloned HD on a FW drive. Unfortunately, I did not export my mail as an archive, from the MBP before I made the clone.
I have a G5 Powermac dual 2.0, that I do not use for mail, and wanted to use my MBP mail in the G5's Mail app.
I tried copying the user/library/mail folder from the MBP's same folder into the G5. This has always worked for me in the past.
When I launch mail, I see all my messages from the MBP in my G5 inbox, but after a few seconds, a status bar appears in the lower left activity section of the main viewer, and then the messages disappear. To where, I have no idea. I have re-tried this method many times, clicking on the stop icon in that status bar, but I can't stop it in time before it disappears all the messages. (Where are they, Gitmo?)
I have taken all accounts offline, and disconnected the internet, and that also doesn't help.
I have tried just importing the inbox from the MBP FW clone, and i get a pop-up message in the import window that says,
    "Error
+No valid Mail for OS X files were found"+
Is there an incompatibility between the intel and ppc's Mail architecture, that is responsible for this?
Why do I see my messages for a few seconds before they vanish without a trace?
Is there any workaround for me that I can try?
Obviously I can't reboot my PPC with the Guid partitioned MBP clone...
Can I clone the MBP's GUID format HD clone to a G5 partition in the Apple Partition Map format and make it bootable? Seems like a lot of effort, but I am getting desperate.
    I'm tearing my hair out...
BTW, I am getting a new MBP, but as it's a special order, it is going to take a week.
I need to access those messages now! Can anyone help?

Well after a day of hair tearing I have finally figured it out.
I found a program called, emix to mbox converter, and I used that to convert all the mail files into an mbox file.
Then I was able to import that, and drag the emails into my .mac inbox.
It's taking a while to transfer them from the import folder to the inbox, but it is working... pheeew!

  • MBP - Intel Core 2 Duo (2008) - Scalding hot, Fans at 6000rpm

    Hi all,
I've been searching for months now for an answer to this dilemma, but I can't seem to find anything that's fixed the problem. I would love to avoid bringing this thing in if possible.
My specs: MBP Intel Core-2 Duo 2.33mHz, 3GB RAM, running OSX 10.7.5 - This thing has been with me for a while and has really stood the test of time thus far.
For the past few years, this thing has just run scalding hot temperatures (around 135-140 F), with fan speeds usually up at about 6000rpms. So it's super hot, super loud - with, according to my sytem monitor, only 5-8% of the CPU resources being used. All it takes is a single application, be it a web browser or anything that even engages the CPU to get it up to those levels. Closing everything rarely leads to it cooling off and quieting down.
I'm fully up-to-date with firmware. I recently swapped the HD to a 500GB seagate and thought that had solved the problem, but it started back up a few days later.
Could this be a heat sink problem?
Literally ANY help would be so tremendously appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

Well, it's possible there is a hardware problem such as a loose or disconnected temperature sensor. You may wish to try running the hardware diagnostics to see if they provide any useful information:
    Using Apple Hardware Test
Intel-based Macs- Using Apple Hardware Test
Intel-based Macs- Starting up into Apple Hardware Test
If nothing pops up then take it in for service. Do not continue to use it with this problem present or you may damage it further.

  • Are intel iMacs compatible with the M9177B/A cinema display

Are intel iMacs compatible with the M9177B/A cinema display please?

That Display has DVI input. So if you have a 2009 iMac with MiniDisplay port output as your profile suggest's...?
Then you will need a > Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.) and maybe a DVI cable if one is not with the monitor.

  • Airport extreme card in g4 ppc - compatible with Mac Pro?

I have an airport extreme card in my g4 PPC. dual 1.25ghz - fw800.
question is, can i take this airport extreme card and put it in my new Mac Pro Dual 2.66ghz intel machine?

No, the AirPort Extreme card is not compatible with the Mac Pro.
The Mac Pro requires a special wireless card. Apple requires installation by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).

  • Intel/PPC node compatibility

Can one use an intel based system as a node while running Logic on a PPC system? Are there compatibility issues?
Somewhere down the line I'll be needing to step up the power/speed of my setup, and it occured to me that rather than shelling out $2500 for a Mac pro, I could just buy a Mac Mini to run as a node. Seems pretty much ideal, since the Mac Mini is a bare bones system, and I'd only need it for extra muscle. Obviously, a it wouldn't compare to the Mac Pro in speed, but just as a means to take a step up...
    Any thoughts?

I run a MacBook Pro,and use an iBook G4 as the node. They work well.
Both have the latest versions LPro 7.2.3 UB,and the newest Node as well.
    Cheers

  • Partition Question:  Can I Make One HD Intel & PPC Bootable?

    Hello,
I bought an OWC FireWire external drive to use as a bootable repair drive. My plan was to partition it in half and then make the first partition bootable on an Intel and then make the second partition bootable on PPC Macs.
So, when I try to do this (via Disk Utility), I discover that I can't choose a partition scheme for each individual partition. Instead I have to choose one scheme for both partitions. GUID apparently boots Intel Macs and Apple Partition Map boots PPC Macs. Is there a way to do what I want to do, and if so, then how? Many thanks!

Some confusion here. "I kept all of the drives as one partition" doesn't make any sense. You have partitions on a drive - not the other way round.
    •  Each partition of a drive is a separate volume with its own icon on the desktop.
    •  Every drive has partitions, even if only one! Another way of saying that is to say that no partitions means one partition.
In Disk Utility if you select the drive, and not an indented volume beneath it, you will see the 'Partition' tab appear and in that tab you will see the "Options…" button which gives you the choice of partition scheme. That applies whether the drive has one partition (aka "no partitions"!) or multiple partitions.
    =-=-=-=-
Your drives do not need to be re-zeroed. What you should do with all drives is occasionally (interpret that according to degree of carefulness /anxiety /paranoia)) run a 'surface scan' to check that no additional bad blocks have appeared, which is a warning to immediately get rid of that drive.

  • Simultaneous Logins; Not Working; Intel & PPC

So, one of my schools is a mixed 10.4 environment with PPC and Intel iMacs. Everything, including the G4 server is sitting at 10.4.7.
I do not have mobile accounts and I don't have fast user switching turned on. And of course, "Simultaneous Logins" is turned off for every account.
My APF clients can go to a PPC machine and login once and then go to an Intel machine and login. They get a slightly different Dock & Safari doesn't play real nice but they're able to login. The same can be said for an AFP client logging into an Intel first and then going to a PPC machine.
Now, they cannot log in on two PPCs or two Intels at any time and so in that respect, the disabling of simultaneous logins is working. However, I've got a lot of people who will be lazy about logging out as they migrate from computer to computer and it's best if this "feature" actually worked cross-processor...
    Any suggestions? Anyone? ;0)

Figured it out, I just had to restart the server for the changes to take effect.

  • Looking for a Intel-Solaris8 compatible modem

    hi,
I'm trying to obtain a compatible internal modem for my Intel Solaris 8 box, any good recommendation? I would prefer one which will be recognised by Solaris 8 during installation. Thanks in advance for your advice!!
    rgrds,

Thanks OSXFreak, that's also a great looking case.
The case I bought is the Otterbox Defender.  It was about a toss up between the Otterbox and the Case-Mate Tough Case that I saw using the link from OSXFreak and I can't say one is better than the other.  I bought the Otterbox mainly because I found it in a store locally and I'd read good reviews on it so I grabbed it.  I work on the water and on steel decks, another reason for buying the Otterbox however I think I'd like the Tough Case as well.
    Thanks for the help guys.

  • Upgrading 2006 MBP Intel Core Duo to SSD?

My MBP is starting to become depressingly slow.  After some research, it appears I'm maxed out at 2GB of memory!    I was wondering if anyone has any experience upgrading the hard drive to a SSD in the same model as mine?  Would I notice a huge difference?
I want to install Lion, but am very nervous it will bring my computer to an unusable creep as I've heard from others.
My model # is here.  And my hardware overview is as follows:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro1,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          2 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP12.0061.B03
      SMC Version (system):          1.5f10
    120GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
Thanks in advance to anyone that can give info/advice/links, etc.  I've never actually upgraded a hard drive before so any tips would be much appreciated!

There is a common misconception that computers slow down over time.  This is just not the case.  There is no reason for your computer to run slower today than the day you bought it.  There is usually something which causes your system to become slow.  Things like low hard drive space and perhaps applications running in the background that you weren't aware of can impact speed.  A failing hard drive can also cause problems.
As you currently have a 5400RPM 120GB hard drive, you will see a significant change in the amount of time it takes applications to launch with an SSD.  Keep in mind, an SSD is only replacing your hard drive, so it is only increasing the speed of loading data from your drive.  It won't speed up your applications (except, again, the drive access time for applications that may rely heavily on disk use).  As you only have 2GB of RAM, your system likely pages data to your hard drive fairly often.  This is when your RAM is "full" and it dumps some of the data to your hard drive so it can load more into the RAM.  When you have a low amount of RAM to start with, this happens more often.  As an SSD is somewhat faster, this becomes less noticeable.
Instructions for replacing your drive may be found in your user's manual.  You should avoid going with SATA 6GB (aka SATA III).  While they will work, the SATA speed on your system is SATA 1.5GB.  Even if you get a SATA 6GB drive, it will only run at 1.5GB... so there's no sense in paying for the extra speed.  You probably won't be able to find a SATA 1.5GB drive... but a SATA 3.0GB (SATA II) drive will be less expensive than a 6GB drive and it will perform just as well on your system.  The drive in your system now doesn't come close to saturating the bandwidth of your SATA 1.5GB controller.  So, even with the older SATA 1.5GB controller, you will still see a significant boost in speed with an SSD.
Having said all that... basically, yes... an SSD will make your system noticibly faster, but it will not boost processing speeds for your applications.

  • Camera bag that also holds the 15.4" MBP intel core

ive searched and found mostly people searching for computer bags. I had a mini trekker that held the pismo and 2 nikon DSLRs and Firelite drives etc....perfectly and fit under the seat or above in carry on. The Mini trekker is too small.
What are you travelling (abroad )photojournalists using to carry your life with you. I wanted the 17" MBP but will settle for the intel. What will carry a MBP and cameras and also get on as carry on. I have never in over 50 countries had a problem with this mini trekkar ( lowe pro)getting it on a plane. Please help! thanks

I meant to say that ill settle for the 15.4" MBP but it will not fit in the Mini trekkar lowe pro!

  • Intel Celeron compatible with dreamweaver CC ?

    Hello,
I want to know if a computer with a intel celeron processor is compatible with dreamweaver cc?
    Thanks

The system requirements list Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 as the minimum.
However, you could always download the 30-day free trial to test it for yourself.

  • Is Mac mini (G4 PPC) compatible with latest AirPort Express?

    Hi,
I'm trying to help a friend get his Mac mini (PPC) networked up to his ADSL connection. I was intending to use an AirPort express which I would wire to the mini over ethernet, then connect to his main wireless network that way. Would this be OK? Is the AirPort utility compatible with his machine also? Thanks!

You will need to do what is called a Wireless Distribution System setup on the Airport Express for it to share the wireless of another wireless router in the house. That way it will echo the internet to the Mac Mini over ethernet.
Some Mac Mini G4s came with built-in Airport Extreme cards, whereas others you had to get a special build to order Airport Extreme card. The 1.42 Ghz Mac Mini was built-in whereas the 1.25 Ghz had to be build to order. This would only effect if you wanted the Airport Express to have a wireless signal to your Mac Mini.

  • Is MBP 2011 RAM compatible with MBP 2007?

    Hello,
I have upgraded the stock RAM on my Macbook Pro 2011 from 4 gb to 16 gb.  My girlfriend still uses the 2007 sometimes, which has 2 gb of RAM - would the 2007 be able to take the old RAM from the 2011?  If so, would it be worth it?  Thanks!

No, they are not compatible. 2007 MBPs use DDR2 200-pin modules while yours uses 204-pin DDR3 modules.

  • RAM of newest MBP (DDR3 1067) compatible with older C2D Mac mini?

    Hi everyone,
I just upgraded my new Core i7 MBP with 8 GB and now the 2x 2 GB (DDR3 1067 MHz) that were previously installed are free to use. I was wondering if they are backwards-compatible with my older 1,83 GHz Core 2 Duo Mac mini which uses DDR2 667 MHz RAMs? I couldn’t find a definitive answer on that. I read statements that these RAMs can be used in Core 2 Duo Macs, but I wanted to make sure...
    Has anybody attempted this?
    Thanks
    Björn

Hey Björn, Scott Billings has it correct, nothing in this comparison is compatible:
    DDR3 1067 MHz
    DDR2 667 MHz
However, depending on where you purchased your Ram upgrade, some venders are offering a rebate for your original factory Ram kit. It is one way of offsetting the upgrade cost. Hope this helps.
