MBP Kernel Panic when connecting to HDTV (DVI)

I have a 15" MacBook Pro that has been working perfectly since I got it. I tried today to connect it to my Hitachi 51" HDTV (via DVI) and got an instant Kernel Panic. I used my 15" Powerbook with this HDTV without any issues.
I've searched and found folks with kernel panics when waking their MBP if the RAM is faulty, but nothing at all about issues when connecting an external display. I am running with all the latest updates, firmware update, etc.
I don't have any problems connecting to a 23" Cinema display or to a 19" Samsung LCD, but I tried several times to connect to the HDTV and got a kernel panic each time. I changed resolutions on one try and still got the same issue (720x480 so the TV would see it as 480p). I even tried booting up with the display already connected and it kernel panic'd when it tried to switch into the full OS X GUI.
The specific error is in the panic.log is:
Sat Jun 10 16:23:48 2006

What happens if you boot from the DVD that came with the MBP instead of booting from your hard drive? It could have something to do with your configuration.

They use the latest OES version with all the latest sp and patches applied. They have even tested with the an OES 11 beta with the same result. The OS run as a VM on VMware in 64 bit mode attached to a SAN. Has also been tested as a plain install without VMware. The Lion version is 10.7.2.
This is how the problem occurs:
    1. Mount the CIFS share - no problems
    2. Use the share - no problems
    3. If the network connection drops you get a message that the CIFS volume has disappeared and you are asked to unmount it. When you do that you get a kernel panic. You can force the problem to happen by turning of WiFi.
So it is OES2 but which version (SP1, SP2, or SP3)? Interesting as I'd only heard of this with NetWare 6.5.
Do you (and anyone else experiencing this issue in this thread) know if this has recently started happening, perhaps after the latest November 2011 Scheduled Maintenance patches were installed?
I'll hopefully be able to do some testing tomorrow but in the meantime I've asked Novell ...

  • IPod Restore failed, now Kernel Panic when connect to Mac

My iPod is a little older and has had trouble updating though the iPod Updaters so in order to get the latest updater on my iPod I've had to just restor the iPod using that specific updater. iPod Updater froze during my last restore and now I have incomplete software on my iPod and connecting it to my Mac results in immediate kernel panic. How can I get my iPod back to a usable state?
    Thanks.

Just got back from trying this idea and IT WORKS. For people that might have this problem, I booted from the CD/DVD and lauched Disk Utility and did a Repair Disk. I did it twice actually for good measure. Afterwards I booted back to the System Folder on the HD and I performed a restore of my iPod using the iPod Updater 2005-06-26.app updater. I've read that my whatever generation iPod works best with that one (I have the click wheel with the 4 buttons above it).
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Kernel panic when connecting fiber channel

I recently inherited an Xserve RAID. I have an LSI fiberchannel card in a G4 running 10.5.5.
Anyway, I updated the firmware to version 1.5 and now everytime I connect the fiber channel cable I get a Kernel panic instantly and have to force power down.
I've tried 3 different cables on and every port on the mac and the xserve and get the same result.
    any idea what's going on?

Well, i just upgrade to 10.8 and its solved the question.

is there anybody to help me connecting my philips picopix 2055 pocket projector
to my macbook pro (OS X 10.8.4.)?
the promised easy self-installing doesn't work at all, it is impossible to load the driver from the picopix.
during all my attempts to get it work, there was a very, very  short episode I could see a
    projection of the desktop.
on the philips- website I found a driver suitible to a mac  (picopix viewer 2).
using it (and the picopix) each attempt causes a kernel panic.

According to the website, the driver is compatible with OS X v10.6 and v10.7. No mention of v10.8.

Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
    Do you???
    Thanx
    Jay

I'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments.

  • Panic when connecting to VPN

    Hi
We have several users who are getting panics when connecting to our VPN from home. They are configured to use either PPTP or IPSEC (they can choose either) and it happens across multiple macbooks, though not all, and when connecting to either type of VPN.

I don't have an answer, but are these Macbook Pros with the ExpressCard slot?  (17" MBP or older 15" MBPs.)  If so, then do these users have external hard drives?  Sonnet does make some ExpressCard SATA adapters so perhaps a driver update is needed.

  • Kernel Panic when Updating from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 Server Software

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
    testing purposes?

  • Experiencing Kernel Panic when computer sleeps???

I have a late 2013 MBP... I recently updated my OS to 10.9.2 Immediately after updating my computer began experiencing kernel panics when it would sleep for various amounts of time (couldn't recognize a real pattern). After a few days the problem seemed to happen more frequently and eventually happened everytime the computer went to sleep. I contacted Apple Support and they have deduced that it is a hardware issue (doesn't make sense to me since it only started happening after a software update?). I did install an aftermarket SSD, so I thought perhaps that was the problem, so I installed a new one... to no avail, still experiencing the same problem. I've come up with a temporary solution... I simply have my computers settings adjusted so that my computer does not sleep. This obviously has not solved my problem, but is a temporary fix. Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on???? Thanks in advance!

The version of virtual box I have on my system may not be the most absolute current up to date, but it is certainly the mac os version. Besides, virtual box wasn't running. It's just a freebie alternative to Parallels allowing me to run windows. But again, unless I'm doing something in windows, virtual box isn't even fired up. It wasn't last night when I put the system to sleep.
How do I find the hardware test that came with my system? Is it on the install dvd? What's it called?
    THANKS!!

  • Kernel Panic when using AppleTalk via AirPort Express

I thought that the issues pertaining to kernel panics when using AppleTalk to connect via AirPort to remote server were solved in the latest (10.5) version of MacOSX - but they are unfortunately not solved.
    ok, so I connect to the remote (macosx) server via the "Connect to..." menu item in Finder. i have a working internet connection up and running via AirPort {AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87) Firmware: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.9)}
i log in and all is fine - until midway through copying some files - kernel panic. the panics can occur even while doing stuff locally, while the AppleTalk connection is just sitting idle in the background.
i am on MacOSX 10.5.4, iMac 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM.
the kernel panics have been occuring since the Leopard upgrade - never before (on either this machine or my older iMac G5).
    any suggestions?
    thanks in advance,
    tobias

  • Kernel panic when booting from DVD or external drive

    Hey Folks,
I have a 13" MBP, seems to run fine for the most part.
However, I can't boot from DVDs or external hard drives. Disk Warrior, my and a tech support buddy of mine's OSX Snow Leopard DVDs, and external boot disks all cause a kernel panic when selected from the alternate boot menu when rebooting with alt.
The DVD/External spins up, the loading spinner goes for about 20-30 seconds, and then BAM - Kernel panic. I'd reinstall OSX... but I can't!
Any suggestions? I'd rather not send the computer to a tech for a week - I need it daily for work.

  • Kernel panics when in sleep mode

I bought a macbook pro about a month ago. It first came with Mountain Lion installed on it. I began having kernel panics when I put the laptop into sleep mode by closing the lid. After some time I would open the lid to find that the laptop had rebooted with a kernel panic. This continued to sporadically happen. I called apple and went to the apple store. The mbp passed their hardware tests so they did a clean Yosemite installation. I am still having the kernel panics. They all look nearly identical. I'm not sure what could be causing this. Any ideas are appreciated.

Apparently the forum software here is preventing my from posting my entire log.

After doing a clean install of Yosemite this same kernel panic continued to happen and I started getting gpuRestarts as well. Finally they replaced my logic board at the apple store and so far no more panics. My google results lead me to believe this was a failing GPU.

  • MacPro Kernel Panic when audio cable is unplugged...

    Hello,
My MacPro running SnowLeopard Kernel Panics when I unplug the speaker cable from the back.  No new hardware/software has been installed recently.  Any insight??
    thanks!

I think you need to post the panic dump listing for folks to help you.  There's no way anyone could guess based on no real information.

  • TS3742 Kernel Panic when I am updating the software
