Mbp keyboard nonresponsive, screen freezes, ideas?

My MBP keyboard and screen freezes; any ideas on a fix?

Reset the SMC (may take 2-3 attempts) and also do a PRAM reset. Instructions are in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If that does not fix the problem then please post an EtreCheck report of your computer in your reply.

My old 17" MBP (2005) often crashes, freezes or shows grey screen at start up. Also track pad often does not work. I have re fomatted the HD and reinstalled system but to no avail. Genius bar says possible faulty HD, but I suspect logic board. All checks out OK on the Apple Diagnostic bench. Can a Logic board go intermittant?? Any Ideas any body??

Ive repaired 1000s of laptops over the years (translate: diagnose and replace parts).
Its not that old, Ive owned 100s of laptops (most were free) ....some I still have are nearly 13 years old and still perfect, ....some extremely expensive ones died in under a year.
other than becoming obsolete at some point, there isnt really any "will spoil on" data like Milk for solid state computer parts, ....alas.
You can have a $5000 laptop die in 4 months, and a junker one keep kicking after 10 years.... Ive seen that firsthand countless times.
Common logic dictates that "very expensive = long life" in computers,..... but all the repair people will tell you just the opposite.
I know you have a gripe, I get that all too well honestly .

  • Mbp 2011 screen freezes and beeps

My 2011 MBP 13.3 will freeze, displaying short bars across the screen in columns, audio beeps three times in intervals.  I must hold the power button down to reboot.

    Some things you can try:
    1. Try a new user account, create one in System Preferences -> Users and Groups, test to see if the issue still persists in this new user account, this will give us a lot of information. (if the problem is the same or it vanishes, let us know)
    2. Make sure all your software is up-to-date, Apple Logo -> Software update.
    3. Unplug all 3rd party devices, just keep in the necessary, Power, Keyboard + Mouse, no ethernet or external hard drives etc.
    4. Reset the PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    5. Reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    6. Boot to the recovery partition (CMD + R on startup until you see a spinning cog with an apple logo, then let go) -> Choose english as the main language -> Choose Disk Utility -> Select your hard drive from the left pane of Disk Utility (NOT Macintosh HD, the one that will look similar to: 1TB ST3200WAJS) -> Select the 'First Aid' tab -> Bottom right of the window it will say 'S.M.A.R.T Status: ________' ... What does it say after smart status?
    7. While still inside the Recovery Partition, select Macintosh HD -> First Aid (tab) -> Verify Disk -> Repair Disk (unless it says the volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK) -> Verify Disk Permissions -> Repair Disk Permissions (if there are differing permissions on the disk)
Let us know if the issue still persists, but make sure you do all of those steps correctly and post back as much information as possible (PRAM takes two chimes at startup, unplug the power cable for 15 seconds, plug it back in, wait 5 seconds, turn on... make sure you follow all articles)
    Good Luck!

  • MBP Screen Freeze. Model A126. Family ID Z0EC. Part No. Z0EC0001A.

    Hello folks! Here's the skinny:
I bought my MBP in June 2006 from apple online. I bought the: MBPRO 15/2.4GHZ/2X1G/SD/GLSY. So it is on the side of the box. The model no and family id are on the title of the thread. I am currently running Tiger 10.4.11. I have just done a full reinstall, deleting all old information.
    Here are the problems:
1st: October 2007: Major battery and power issues.-Fixed at 150 USD
2nd: Now: random screen freezes. They occur when I minimize and maximize applications, use applications, use mozilla, open the finder window. Pretty much do anything. I am able to move my cursor on the screen, but clicking or closing anything is impossible and I have to do a full shutdown in order to get things running again. Sometimes I can use the MBP for a day or two and then WHAMMM! Screen Freeze. Or sometimes it is after an hour of using the trial version of Aperature 1.5.6. These problems occur after I have reinstalled Mac OS X and then did all the updates.
Please help, as I did not buy the apple extended service plan, although I'm wondering if I can buy it now. I've read that the problem lies in the video card. The video card I'm using is the Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600. If that is true, can I replace it with a Nvidia one?
So, if someone has an an answer to my question I will bestow upon you 1,000 lucky days!

    Good morning,
 *Welcome to the Apple Discussions Forum* 
To answer your question, no, you can not replace the video controller in your MacBook Pro. The video chip is an integrated chip on the logic board of your MacBook Pro and is not an upgradable component.
I am not entirely sold on the idea that the problem you have is your video chip either, if it was you shouldn't be able to move your cursor either, or if you could you'd have video distortion with the movement.
If possible I might recommend that you take your MBP to your [local Apple Store's Genius Bar|http://www.apple.com/retail] and let them look at it, describe your problem and see what they can suggest. If they do not keep the MBP for service, which you can always reject, then you will not be charged even out of warranty. I'd just see if they can offer some free advice as to what might be causing the trouble, they can even often perform a diagnostic on the bench while you're standing there.
    Hope this helps! 

  • Can I use a 15" MBP as keyboard and screen to work on bootable drive MBP 17

    Hi, all,
I already asked this question in a post with other questions more prominant so I am trying this as a solo question. I have a MBP 17" intel Core Duo that will be going in for repairs. I have an OWC 1 TB drive formated to be bootable. Can I boot from the external HD from a 15" MBP Core Duo and use it essentially as a keyboard and screen and work on the 17" files with all the software or can I only transfer files to the 15"? The 17" has Leopard and Adobe CS3 (which I cannot do without) the 15" runs Tiger and I run CS2 on it.
    Thanks!

    Yes.

To make sure that this is not software related, set it up as new device, explained in this article:

Reset the SMC and PRAM, if the issue continues then you likely have a failing GPU (hardware) that requires repair. To be sure take it in and have it professionally assessed.

  • Keyboard and screen scrolling freezing up after software update approx. 30 days ago.

2 year old 16GB IPad (Model MD522LL/A) Recently (last 30 days) installed recommended software update (sorry do not recall number of update). Now having problem with keyboard freezing when messaging as well as screen freezing when scrolling. Can sometimes be temporarily resolved by rebooting (turning off, waiting 3 to 5 minutes and restarting).
    Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks for that, I did go looking for it but couldn't find it.
Unfortunately, resetting the PRAM and NVRAM didn't work. Will a reinstallation of OS X make a difference, bearing in mind I've already restored from a Time Machine backup? (I don't know if those clone everything or don't include system files).

  • Screen freezes with LOGIC pro 7 & OSX 3.0.any ideas?

    Hi
I have a G5 with dual processors and 1.5 ram/150gb HD. I am running Logic pro 7 on the original OSX 3.0 with a Motu 828mk2 firewire interface.
The screen freezes a lot (sometimes with audio still running) and the only way is to turn it off and reboot.
I am not working with lots of audio or plug ins (maybe one or two tracks at most).
I wondered whether its the OS? maybe i need Tiger?
I would be grateful of any help

As JustinC pointed out, it would be better you were running a more 'mature' OS (also CoreAudio is part of Quicktime so if you have updated QT and not the OS you could, possibly, be running an incompatible version of CoreAudio, i'm not too sure about that.)
But considering the symptoms you mentioned, and the fact you are running very few audio tracks, I'm assuming you run a lot of MIDI.
The symptoms you describe sound a lot like a MIDI feedback loop.
You don't have any sort of inter-app MIDI routing enabled, do you ?
If you do, you need to isolate the inter-app inputs from the sequencer input, or be very careful not to select tracks which are assigned to an inter-app port (or 'all' ports)
Oh, and update the OS anyway, there is no good reason to stick with 10.3.0

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze-MacBook pro

Working along and trackpad and mouse just freeze. I thought the whole computer froze until I pressed the power button and the screen changed to confirm if I wanted to shutdown. At that point I plugged in a external USB mouse and I could now move my mouse pointer. Still no trackpad or keyboard. To recover I saved my work and restarted. Any ideas? I'm using a 13 inch mid 2010.

    Good Afternoon,
Yesterday afternoon, I turned on my MacBook Pro and a few seconds after bootup the trackpad became unresponsive, I then tried to perform a restart with the aid of the keyboard however, I then, noticed that my MBP keyboard also became unresponsive. I then tried to turn off the system through the power button and a dialog of OSX came up asking me to Restart, Sleep, and/or Shutdown the computer, meaning that the OS was somewhat responsive. Since I could not select any of the options via keyboard or trackpad I decided to close the lid of my MacBook Pro. Interestly, when I reopened the lid I has to push the power button and the computer went over a new start up sequence and the computer has behaved normally thereafter. However, I should note that this is the second time that my MBP freezes on me in the fashion. What should I do? Is this a common error in MacBook Pros?
    My MacBook Pro model is a 15" Core i5 2.53ghz Mid-2010 with 500GB HDD, 4GB of Ram, and a Nvidia 330m 256mb grapichs card.
Thank You for any assistance in this matter.
    Anyone?

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze after being idle for a few minutes

I have a early 2008 MBP and just today the keyboard and trackpad freeze after not using it for a few minutes.  I was at work when it happened.  I plugged it in and started doing something else and a few minutes later came back and i couldn't move the mouse or do anything with the keyboard, but processes were still running.  For example, I have a fan speed app that sits in the toolbar, and it was still showing current fan speed.  So I restarted it, and it did it again.  So the next time it happened, I closed the lid and opened it up and it fixed it.  It's happened several times now after a few minutes of non use and I just close the lid and it fixes it.  Also, there was a period when I was using my computer for a couple of hours non stop and it didn't have a problem.  Only when I'm not touching the keyboard or trackpad does it do it.  since this keeps happening i have verified the disk in disk utility, done a hardware reset with cmd+opt+p+r, ran through system profiler to see if there were any problems with no results, and it still does it.  Anyone have any ideas?
It should be noted that not only does the battery not work for more than about 2 minutes, the left I/O board appears to be dying.  The power chord takes a considerable amount of wiggling and adjusting before it finds a place where it will actually charge. The audio out and the USB on that side are the same way. So I am aware of that problem. Also, I have had to take out the right side fan multiple times and disassemble and oil the bearing because it's going bad, which requires taking the top plate off, but I haven't had to do that for over 6 months. In my mind if the problem was caused by taking the top plate off, that would fry the entire top plate, which happened once when a technitian at a local company took the computer apart for a waranty repair.  All of these problems considered, I don't think they would have anything to do with the fact that the mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work after about 5-10 minutes of sitting idle. I have done nothing different since yesterday that would explain why it does this.
Also, I can't do anything with the install disk because the CD drive is dead.  But that's mostly because it was a piece of garbage to begin with.
    Any Ideas would be helpful.

After doing some more digging I was watching processes in Activity Monitor to see if I could see what process is failing.  I think the problem with with Chrome. It only happened when Chrome was open. And since then I reinstalled it and the problem has so far gone away.  So, I think the problems is solved.

  • Passport screen freezes after a long call

    Hello,
I've got my PassPort since fall october.
Although I am quite happy with it, I have noticed that after a long call, say 15min or more, the screen becomes slowly responsive. It doesn't fully freeze, though it is very slow to bring back the unlock screen. After unlocking the screen, the device behave nearly as expected although I have also noticed that the keyboard doesn't light. And if it locks again, it stays slowly responsive until I unlock the screen. To bring back the normal behavior there is nothing to do but restarting the device.
    OS is : 10.3.0.1418
    Radio is : 10.3.0.1419
Device is full encrypted as well as the SD card.
I've got very few third party apps, say Whatsapp, BBM meeting, radio.fr, beta zone, device switch.
I've removed everything on the device and did a clean, full install with link but I still experienced the same issue.
    Any idea ?
    Regards,
    LB

    Ira,
Thanks for replying. No, I did no test without any third party apps. I'd prefer not being forced to uninstall WhatsApp because I'm using it a lot ... I was using it in the past with BB OS 7 and had no issue so far. However I saw a lot of threads dealing with screen freezing after calling but none of them mentionning issue with WhatsApp. Do you have any link about this?
    Regards,

  • Keyboard and mouse freeze when trying to play Maplestory

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro and have boot camped Windows XP sp3 onto it.
I play a game called maplestory, and when I try to play it via boot camp, my keyboard and mouse freeze as soon as all of the intro splashes are done (So, once I get to the log in screen).
All background programs work fine, however since I can't use my keyboard or mouse I can't do anything. The Apple Remote also doesn't function.
This problem seems to be exclusive to Maplestory, as games such as Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Doom3, and Portal all work fine.

  • Intermittent screen freeze!! Corrupt Firmware?

A week ago my G4 iBook, running 10.4.3, woke from sleep with the screensaver screen on but no reaction from mouse button, touchpad or keyboard buttons. I shut down and attempted reboot but only got to blue screen (before OSX loading screen and progress bar). My local Apple dealer checked it and reckoned that it was definitely not a hardware problem. They presumed that the system was corrupted and recommended I reboot with the install DVD (archive & replace). I did this and then reupdated to 10.4.3 and found that if I let it sleep, it would wake with either the desktop or screensaver but no action from any input buttons. Shutting down and rebooting gave me the same, aforementioned blue screen situation. I tried another reinstall and updated to 10.4.2 as this had not given any previous problem. But.... got the same problem! I reinstalled 10.4 (erase and install) and got the same problem. I have run Disk Utility and hardware diagnostics but get a clean bill of health. Before my last reinstall, I zero'd the hard drive and have only installed 10.4 from the DVD. I have not introduced any other documents, applications or received any emails (I thought it may be a virus - I don't have protection). It worked fine on the initial welcome and set-up wizard and let me even use the web, but I let it fall asleep with the screen saver on and then got exactly the same response as my original problem. Sometimes it will boot up – but eventually the screen freezes (trackpad still moves pointer though!) and I have to shut down. Sometimes it boots up till the gray apple/gear wheel screen disappears then stops at a paler blue screen (seems a bit paler than the background of the OS loading screen with the progress bar). I'm wondering: If it is not the hardware, and it is not the system software, could it be the Firmware? I know it is sometimes necessary to update the Firmware on certain machines. Can the Firmware become corrupted? Can I check or verify the Firmware? Can I reinstall the Firmware? Hope you guys can help because I am running out of ideas!

    Hi straightshooter,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
It sounds like hardware to me. When mine acted that way it was the logic board that was bad. You should call Apple, (not the local reseller), to get it taken care of.
