MBP Late 2011 - sata 6 ssd in optibay?
Has anyone gotten a SATA 6 SSD to work reliably in the optibay of a late 2011 MBP? I know there were issues in the past - adn I failed to get a Seagate hybird to work in early 2012.
But there have been firware updates, and I've recently had my logic board replaced (for a separate issue). I'm wondering if I should give it a try again. I've got a spare SSD that's just screaming to host a boot camp partition. It's a pain to swap out the DVD drive (I fumble the tiny screws), so I thought I'd ask before giving it a try.
Thanks for any insights.
Apparently, the optical bay in that model may not support 6G. The specs info I have says 3G or 6G whereas the next later model says 6G. I'm not exactly sure how that should be interpreted.
Still, there's no reason you couldn't use 6G drive provided it was backward compatible with a 3G port.
Did you partition the drive GUID before trying to format it?

hey apple! why mbp late 2011 didn't have power nap?
Because it requires an SSD/flash storage, and they stated all over the place that a MacBook Air (Late-2010) or MacBook Pro with Retina display is required, since they are the only models with flash storage.

Cheers everybody, new here...
I know, despite the specs published 8Gmax and 1333mhz, for the macbook pro late 2011 2.2G i7 processor
We can read here that its possible to go 16G ram, and also to 1600mhz.
1-have a mbp late 2011 2.2Ghz i7 (original config with 4G of ram 1333mhz)
2-last w/e have upgraded ram to 8G of 1600mhz found it seemed to work fine and it was fast
3-than upgraded with 16G of 1333mhz and find it much slower
Not sure of what to do from now :
wondering if it could be that 8G 1600mhz is optimal ?
I havent tried 16G of 1600mhz yet...Hi there !
Update:
Here are the last changes, as of this morning, of the configuration on my macbook pro late 2011 (2.2Ghz processor 15.4 screen).
Now have 16 G (2x8) of Kingston RAM 1600mhz (12800 1.35V) that and a brand new 256G samsung 850 pro SSD.
I KNOW...NOT QUITE THE SPECS SUPPLIED FROM APPLE/INTEL ... :/
I was able to trade the 16G 1333mhz purchased RAM for 16G of 1600mhz , so i gave a shot...
So im happy about the result and hope this will last and not fry in the next weeks...
Honestly It's running quite well and fast too.
Thanks everybody and good luck
p.s.
And Here, as promised, the answer from Intel :

The document does not list all the processor models but it is the correct document for your processor family (http://ark.intel.com/products/family/59136/2nd-Generation-Intel-Core-i7-Processo rs#@Mobile). "1Gb, 2Gb, and 4Gb DDR3 DRAM technologies" refer to SDRAM density, it is not about capacity as it is usually expressed in GB (instead of Gb). SDRAM density depends on the total amount of memory chips on the stick and per side (SDRAM organization). Memory modules rated or sold as 1600 MHz may or may not run at 1600 MHz; this depends on the Serial Presence Detect. If the SPD is 1333 MHz it will run at 1333 MHz by default unless it is configured manually. If the memory runs at 1600 MHz (by SPD or set up manually), the memory controller might be running at a higher clock speed than what it was designed for, this may cause issues along the way.

Hi JoeThanks for the answer Im feeling optimistic...I installed 16G(2x8) ram on my late 2011 macbook pro this is 1600mhz 1.35v ram.Its working fine for now...Hope it lasts;) -
HELP... Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts. Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
Can any one help?

MBP Late 2011 - MiniDisplayport Not Working
I have a MBP Late 2011. I connect my MBP to an external monitor using a Mini Displayport to HDMI converter. Everything was working fine till this morning. I uplugged the converter and hours later when I plugged it back into my MBP, my MBP doesn't detect the monitor anymore. The screen on my MBP flashes blue but it goes back to whatever it was before.
I am sure the HDMI cable is okay because I tried it out on my PS3, so it's possible that the converter is the problem, but since the screen flashed blue, doesn't mean the converter is also okay? Is there a way to check if my MiniDisplayport Port is working properly? This is the only computer in the house that has a MiniDisplay Port. Anybody have suggestions as to how to fix this?
ThanksAt whatever percentage the battery is in now be it 34% or 99% it doesnt charge properly. It just cuts after awhile or if i open like more than 2 programmes. Tried changing charger from 60W to 85W. it is just not charging properly.

im planning to upgrade my MBP late 2011's ram from 4gb to 8gb. Is there any specific brand of ram that i should buy or i can buy any brand that suits my MBP? im aware of all the details that i need to consider pc3 - 10600 1333MHz 4gb. i just want to know is there any specific brand or i can use any brand,
Thank you.The most reliable sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial. Macs seem to be selective with RAM so some brands will not work. Make certain that you get RAM with the exact specifications that apply to your MBP.
Ciao.
If you have a need, be advised that you MBP can actually support 16 GB RAM.

Upgrade my RAM on my MBP (late 2011)
I am looking to upgrade my RAM on my MBP (late 2011). The Apple option is a little expensive for me at the moment. I have been doing a bit if reading and Crucial seem to have 'certified' options. Does anyone have experience of this type?
It's pretty easy to do yourself. Go to OWC to find tutorials as well as check the user guide for the computer - usually in Chapter 3.
Brand is not a major concern when purchasing memory. Crucial products are no better than most others even non-brands. Buy from a reliable vendor and only buy a product that comes with a manufacturer's lifetime guarantee.
In addition to OWC another good vendor is DataMem. -
No wake from sleep mode MBP later 2011
On my MBP late 2011 build, with OSX Lion Preinstalled. I upgraded to Mountain lion recently, and all went smooth until I closed the lid to put it too sleep. When I returned, opened the lid, it would not wake from sleep. I have to force shutdown and then boot up. This happpens regardless of on or off hte AC adapter. I have already lost some data from this problem. From the online forums I have seen others with this issues, but have found no resolution. Please HELP!
Well after calling Apple support, they determined it was some sort of software issue., so then i took it to the university tech depot and the tech did all the things i tried (SMC reset, reupdate, etc) and a few other resets (not exaclty sure what he did), but nothing seemed to work.
However, this morning, miraculously, it started working (sleep mode that is). I an not sure still what exactly is going on, but its working for now. -
MBP late 2011 sd card write extremely slow
I have a Macbook Pro late 2011 all Lion updates applied and want to use the integrated SD Card Reader (which, according to System Profiler is connected directly to the PCIe Bus).
My SD card is a brand new Sandisk Extreme Pro, which is rated for 95MB/sec and 90MB/sec write speed. Reading from the card is quite fast, I get over 88MB/sec. Writing, however, is abysmally slow. I could not get more than 12,6MB/sec write speed (tested via transferring a 4GB ISO Image from/to the internal SSD). The same card on an old USB 2.0 reader connected to an ancient PC gives around 20MB/sec. I did not test it on another device with a fast SD reader yet.
A google search turned up a review on amazon where eThe SD slot on a late model like yours can read/write at 2.5GT/sec (gigatransfers). Don't ask me what that is in Mbps, but much faster than the 480Mbps (60 MB/s) of the older macbook pros. The limit is the card and the file system. Probably formatted at MSDOS-FAT32 by most cameras, windoze will probably like it better.
The card is classed and optimized for camera use - several smallish files around 10MB at a time. testing to near destruction with massive blocks of data will tell you nothing and won't do the card any good. If your camera will take multiple shots of RAW and save them in a couple of seconds in the camera then that's what is important.
Put the SDHC card in, go to About this Mac, system report, then Card Reader and see what the Mac thinks you have. My class 10 shows up as class 4 so somebody is wrong, probably the factory that put the labels on my bargain class 10 card! -
Windows 8 Consumer Preview on Boot Camp- MBP Late 2011
Hi all.
I have been having problems on installing the Windows 8 CP on my late 2011 MBP, on Boot Camp the "Create Windows 7 Install disk" option is grayed out, I cannot access that area.
Are there any other ways to run the Preview on Boot Camp? Or should I just use a virtual desktop??
Thanks for your help. All suggestions and alternatives are greatly appreciated.Installing Windows 8 On a MacBook Air

Mavericks - Repeated crashes with strange screen artefacts on MBP late 2011
After installing Mavericks on my MBP I experienced a multitude of problems. Most of them were resolved by uninstalling some incompatible software, repairing permissions, nvram reset. But I am stuck with a strange issue were the screen suddenly shows blue stripes, gray stripes or a distorted image of the desktop (freezes sometimes), see images.
Since this never happend before, the MBP didn't crash in a year, I thought Mavericks is to blame But no one else seems to have this problem, so I am afraid that it might be a hardware problem on my side (Hardware test didn't find anything either, though).
Does anyone have an idea whats going on here?EtreCheck System Report:

Trouble connecting second monitor (MBP late 2011)
Hi guys! I'm Nico and as you can see from the title i'm having problems connecting a second monitor to my macbook pro late 2011.
I have a mini display port to hdmi adapter that works perfectly fine (I use it with my HDTV), and because I also have an Asus external 22" monitor I bought a hdmi/vga cable
(http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=171010746825#ht_2700wt_1144)
so I could use my mini display port to hdmi adapter without buying another adapter.
This is what I do:
1- connect the vga cable to the Asus monitor
2- connect the other end of the cable (hdmi) to the mini display port to hdmi adapter
3- connect the mini display port to hdmi adapter to my macbook pro
But nothing works! My Mac is plugged to the power as well. I've tried to check in the monitor setting but nothing shows up, and even doing "detect display" still nothing works.
I've also tried to reset the pram. But without luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
NicoAny idea guys?

24in LED Cinema Display not charging MBP Late 2011
Hello All,
My new Macbook Pro (Late 2011) will not charge when connected to my 24in LED Cinema Display. The power indicator on the menu bar says "Not Charging" and the LED in the magsafe cable is dim. Is this a known limitation of the older Cinema Displays?
Thanks,
c.I had the same problem. I found this
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2006045?start=0&tstart=0
.. which suggestes "wiggling" the magsafe connector a little. It worked for me.
