MBP LED LCD Gradient Test - Software or Hardware issue?

Hello!
I've noticed some of the discussions around the new MBP's LED displays, and some people having issues with not-so-smooth gradients in LCDTest 1.1 or 2.0.
My current, new, SR 15" MBP sports a darkish bar in the green area of the gradient, and a solid one in the red corner, when using the default color profile. That is, the gradient does not have all smooth transitions between colors. Switching to one of the (very blueish) sRGB-like profiles, the gradients display just fine and as smooth as they should. Weirdly, using the LCDTest 2.0's feature to display the gradient using Quartz, the gradient is completely smooth even with the default color profile.
As this issue also shows up in the color picker of applications such as Photoshop, where it is - in my opinion - prohibitive, and because I would much rather use a decently calibrated profile than simply a blueish-looking one, even considering that it is only a laptop LCD, my question, now, is:
Is this an actual hardware problem that can only be fixed by replacing the LCD itself, or is it possible that there will be a software/firmware upgrade published by Apple in the near future, to amend it?
(Note: I am not referring to the yellow-ish tinge mentioned by some users here, I am only talking about the issue concerning the smoothness of the gradient.)
Any ideas or actual insights?
MBP 2.4 15" Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I'll say it differently: I doubt we can do anything about it, because it's obviously a problem with the LCD technology. I think we have no chance to push Apple into using 1440x900 15,4inch LCDs from some other manufacturer.
After all, the specs say "support for millions of colors" and not "actually viewing millions of colors".
If you need a color-perfect working environment, you actually have to use a calibrated external display. You can never fully rely on any notebook LCD.

  • I have a 2008 MacBook that suddenly is showing a dark screen. Would like to test this with an external screen to see if it is software or hardware issue.

Can someone please advise on cables required to connect to PC flat screen that is over 3 years old? Standard PC flat pan

The early 2008 MacBook has a Mini-DVI port for video output. You will need, therefore, a Mini-DVI to whatever your external display has.
A better test to see if this is a software issue would be to start up the MacBook while holding the Option key on your keyboard down. This starts into the Startup Manager, which is not software dependent. Do you see any video if you do this?
You may also want to try resetting the parameter RAM and if that doesn't do it, resetting the System Management Controller.
If all of these fail, you have a hardware issue. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.
    Best of luck.

It does sound like hardware and only Apple can help you.

  • Iphone camera shutter not opening...not sure if software or hardware issue.

    Hey everyone,
So I've had my iphone 4 for about 3 months now. It was working perfectly until last week. The camera shutter will not open for some reason. I can't use the front face or the regular camera. This also does not allow me to facetime. I would turn off the iphone, cancel all the apps, and SOMETIMES it would work, but now it just doesn't. Now the weird thing is that when I downloaded third party camera apps from the apple store, my regular camera was working, but my front face camera was not. Also facebook allows me to snap photos, but not front face photos....
I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue, only because my iphone was working perfect for months before this problem occurred. Should I restore it?
I've had such terrible luck with iphones, if i can't do anything about it and Apple has to replace it, this is the second time i'm going to have to replace the phone since getting the iphone in april.
    PLEASE HELP!

A simple search via the forums here or google would have revealed a multitude of posts about this issue, basic troubleshooting, and possible resolutions.
The "More Like This" section to the right of the posting should also be helpful.

  • Software or Hardware issue?

I have just re-installed Yosemite and I'm still having problems.  Seems everything is slow, from
working on different sites, moving in different windows and even when typing here or on an
email.  When typing I can get 8 to 10 letters ahead of the type on the screen and when I
make a mistake and hit delete to correct, color wheel sits and spins for awhile before I can
actually correct.  I'm in a bit of a cash crunch and I have an iPad, so I hope I can figure out
the issue and save some money, rather than find out it's a very expensive issue and can't
afford to have it fixed now and loose the money used to diagnose the problem.  I'm wondering
if the fan isn't circulating enough air and it's too warm or I'm having a processor problem.
I have recently replaced the hard drive.
This is actually my third attempt to do this post.  Finally
    Thanks,
    Hal

  • Marching ants when resuming from sleep - software or hardware issue?

    Hello -
My new T400 thinkpad works great except periodically when resuming from sleep mode, I get squiggly marching ant lines across the screen. I can continue to log-in, open apps, etc but the lines won't go away until I restart.
Does anyone have any idea whether this is a hardware or software issue? I'm running Win 7 Enterprise.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

This problem was fixed by disabling and then re-enabling the video driver. Updating the driver didn't work; it had to be diabled and re-enabled.  According to the technician the marching ants were a result of an incorrect refresh rate (it was refreshing either too fast or two slow).
At least that took care of the issue on my T400. Hope it helps!

  • Possible software or hardware issue (have installed most recent drivers)

I have the FX5200 personal cinema and I must say that this is, without doubt the most troublesome card I've ever installed. This includes all manner of boards in the past and many rebuilds over the years.
I managed to solve my nvidia remote problems by doing a completely fresh XP install. Having stated that I had gone through and read the stickies (AND tried their advice AND searched the forum for other posts) I was surprised that no one could/would help.
Having sorted out the other issues (remote usb now recognised, remote control functioning etc.) I am left with perhaps the most frustrating of all - NO SOUND with DVR
NOW, I HAVE read the stickies regarding this, installed my board properly and even connected all of the cables from the breakout box. I am a semi-professional musician, so I know about soundcards and I am experiencing a strange problem.
I can get sound great on the other bundled apps but DVR won't even let me raise the volume with its software slider (on the console) or by using the remote (which works with everything else).
At first I thought it could be due to poor reception - no sound channel being picked up - but I don't believe that this is the case because I used the same aerial with a portable TV and it worked great.
Is this a software issue? Or has the software decided that I am not worthy of having any sound on my TV? Or has it discovered a problem that none of the other apps have and not letting me control the volume is its way of telling me that there is something wrong?
I have installed all of the latest software and WDM drivers from the nvidia website, so please don't ask me to do this again. If it helps, my version of the FX5200 PC is the one with the heatsink, not the fan.

Hi there.. now im not Sure this is the only solution for you but i can say that  Upgrade versions of xp.. {and ive installed a bunch at work}  are NEVER  as stable  as a clean install of XP pro. this is my personal experience , and honestly.. im not THAT bad of a tech,, when making Vid boxes for CausinFX {latest company ive done a build for} the owner wanted to migrate and do an upgrade of his MAYA stations and one SGI workstation..  well the misery went on for a week.. Change this part.. not compatible with that part.. finally he went and got a copy of XP Pro with 10 Mips..  problem solved in about 9 hrs after installing..
Not  neccassarily your problem specifically but it sure Smelled like  mine...
    good luck

  • USB 2.0 a software or hardware issue?

I'm upgrading my 233 mHz iMac to OS 10.3, which supports USB 2.0, and was wondering if that makes any difference with the iMac's old USB ports. This machine doesn't have Firewire, so a faster 2.0 USB would be nice.

Joe, I don't recall whether the flash drive was plugged in or not when I checked System Profiler, if it's sgnificant I can put the card back in to the machine, plug the device in and try it again.
The flash drive device plugs in itself with no cable. It works fine when plugged in to a USB 1 hub which is plugged in to the Mac.
After trying everything I could think of I removed the card since it prevented the monitor from waking up from a sleep, and even caused a kernel panic once. "Cables To Go", who sells the card suggested I try another slot, but that didn't work either. I guess I'll return it if I can.
Thanks for your input. Yes, I noticed after I posted that the topic was marked "solved". Oops, that's a new feature of this BBS isn't it? And quoting the last post here below the reply field is a good idea too. I'll pay more attention next time.
BTW is there a way to force a "mount" of a device? Even if there is a Unix mount command, I wouldn't know what to call the various ports. I assume that a hard drive's name, in quotes, could be used if that's what one wanted to mount, can the name of a USB device be used like that?

  • Graphics glitch - software or hardware?

There have been reports of blinking screens since upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I've had slightly more serious issues.
To begin with it wasn't much, just quick flashes of old screens in Safari - eg when you add a new tab or two, and then close one, you'd get a quick flash of the website open in another tab.
Even had quick, and garbled flashes of a webpage another user had been looking at when they were logged in.
But then yesterday, the machine froze, and I got some violent flashing, a garbled band across the bottom of the screen, and an unhealthy sound from the machine.
It was fine after a reboot, but it happened again last night, but without the noise.
I've posted a quick video and some pics here :
    http://www.hpwebdesign.co.uk/macbook/macbook.html
Any advise if this is likely to be a software or hardware issue would be much appreciated.
I realise I'll probably need to take it in to get checked out, but its a four hour round trip, so thought I'd run it by here first!
Its a late 08 unibody 15", with 4GB of RAM, and SL. Going to be bad luck if something is screwed, as this is a replacement machine after the one we bought had a logic board replacement, and a faulty LCD panel replaced with another faulty LCD panel!
    Thanks.

Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? This looks more like hardware to me, possibly like a graphics chip malfunction. Or possibly a dying hard drive.
You mentioned an unhealthy sound from the machine--could it have come from the hard drive? Best make a backup and keep it up to date just in case your drive is going south.
It might be worth using your install disc to repair your start up disk. That would not fix any physical problems with the drive, but it would repair the drive's complex software. Also use DU to check your hard drive's S.M.A.R.T. status.
For a more detailed look at your hard drive, you could try S.M.A.R.T. Utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
You could also try reinstalling the OS if the AHT does not show any errors. If the problems persist after reinstalling the OS, then software is likely not the underlying issue.
Hopefully working your way through some of these suggestions will give some insight as to what the underlying problem is.
    Good luck!

  • Handoff won't work MacBook Air: software or hardware

I can get my iPad Air and iPhone 6 to do handoff- but not my MacBook Air.  I am running all of the most updated OS X and iOS versions on a MacBookAir Late 2010.  Below are some instructions I found on another site, but even though I am running the latest Bluetooth, there seems to be other issues - are these software or hardware issues?
There seems to be a few places to check:  APPLE>About This Mac>System Report>Select Blue Tooth from the Left column > Look for: 1) 4th from the top and item saying HANDOFF Supported - mine says no!  Even though I have Bluetooth 4.3 software.  There is apparently another item called the LMP version which has to be 0x6 - mine in 0x4.  Then go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES>GENERAL>...there is supposed to be a checkbox right near the bottom just below the RECENT ITEMS count selector drop down that says ALLOW HANDOFF BETWEEN THIS MAC AND OTHER ICLOUD DEVICES - I do not have this on mine - again assuming it is because of the afore mentioned shortfalls.

Continuity and Handoff require a mid-2012 or newer Mac, per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6337 so it is a hardware issue.

  • Strange connection problems -- software or hardware?

I've been experiencing some strange connectivity problems of late, and am wondering if it's a software or hardware issue. I'm running OS-X 10.4.11, and have noticed web-associated "drop-outs" occurring. When I'm browsing, any of the following will happen:
    1. the pages will periodically stop loading, or will take forever to load a few final images.
    2. the page will load with a different format (completely unformatted, like a throwback to Mosaic!).
    3. the page won't load at all, and will instead give me either a "DNS error" message, or will default to my ISP's "We couldn't resolve your page" message.
    4. Nothing out of the ordinary happens.
Throughout this process, the connection strength is 100%.
It seems this happens with both Firefox and Safari. Is this an issue with driver software, or is my Airport Card giving out? My computer is about 3 years old.

I have been having intermittent connection problems on several computers over many years now. We have 12 eMacs, all purchased within a few months of each other, all with 10.4.11. Some computers have almost perfect internet connection, but some are constantly losing connection. If the user just waits a few minutes, the network just comes back or if they open system preferences and renew the DHCP lease it comes back as well. We have tried replacing cables, reloading the operating system, repairing permissions, reseting safari... We are all connecting through ethernet cables through wall jacks then to a switch that is connected to our router. Our DSL provider claims it can't be wiring or a problem on their end or they would see it and we would all have problems. I am not super computer literate... Any suggestions for what I should check on the 4 or so computers that are having lots of connection problems?
Thanks for any words of wisdom!!!

  • Why does my iPhone 5 take very grainy flash photographs in the dark will a hard reboot be safe to do to try to fix or is it a hardware issue?

Why does my iPhone 5 take very grainy flash photographs in the dark will a hard reboot be safe to do to try to fix or is it a hardware issue?
And By hard boot I mean holding the home and power button down at the same time for 10 seconds or whatever
I see other people have these grainy flash photographs if you try to take a picture in darkness the picture comes out very dark and grainy I thought the software would ultimately fix this but it's been going on for over a year I usually take my photographs in daylight but I need this to be fixed
If it is a hardware issue I hope Apple will replace my iPhone 5 because I was just waiting for one of the iOS updates to fix it I bought my phone in November 2012 its the iPhone 5
Please help or advise if you can was this just a software or hardware issue I know Apple was aware of it but I was advised that iOS update would fix it but obviously not
Is it safe to do a hard boot on my iPhone five by holding the power and home button at the same time for 10 or 20 seconds I saw someone said that fixed there's at least temporarily
I'm typing this on my iPhone five right now why do the words go off to the left and right no matter if I hold the phone vertical or horizontal the words bleed off to left right so for me to proofread it I have to move my text left to right to proof read it
    Thank you

The flash on a smartphone camera is tiny. It only lights up a very small area right in front of the camera. It won't light up the whole scene.
Have you seen the size of the flash on a professional camera? Even they can't light a whole scene in the dark.
Fact is, a smartphone camera is not capable of taking good photos in the dark, even with the flash.
You'll need to buy and learn how to use a professional, dedicated SLR camera to be able to take good photos in the dark. It is not easy.

  • I have purchased Iphn 4s recently and since then i m facing issues around Battery back up, Software and even issue around hard drive. I have visited I store where they formatted my phone but nothing positive has happened. How do i escalate?

I have purchased I phone 4S on April 30th 2014. Since I bought this phone, I have been facing issues such as Battery Back up, Software and Hardware issue and hang issue. I had visited I store last month where they just formatted my phone. The issues were not taken care completely, even till now the issues are on. I would appreciate if you could help me with the right escalation desk for raising my voice to Apple team.
I have been using apple product since long now and never face such dissatisfaction in past
    Regards,

Hello, when you are having an error on your iPhone and going to the Apple store to get it taken care of, make sure you speak up and provide as much detail as you can. The first iPad Mini I had bought had errors on it, and I didn't speak up and provide further details on my issue.
Hope your issue gets resolved soon!

  • Apple Hardware Test software for late '07 Macbook?

Where do I get the Apple Hardware Test software for a late '07 Macbook?  Original disk is long lost and it doesn't appear Apple has this up for download.
The battery is not taking any charge, totally dead after 772 cycles.  But don't know if its the battery or the Macbook's internal battery charging hardware.

Using How to identify MacBook models your Macbook is a Macbook 3,1. At this link https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest click on Macbook3,1 link which will download the AHT software. Here is the direct link - MacBook3,1 Mac-F22788C8.

  • Hardware testing software other than AHT?

    Hi,
I'm running a 2.7 G5 with 10.4.11 (sometime I boot up in 10.3) and my disk doesn't want to let me run the Apple Hardware TEsts. I just can't find it on the disk (I've followed all the advice in these discussions).
Can anyone suggest something I could download to test my hardware. I keep crashing when i open the Screen Saver preference panel. Also, It often fails to restart after I shut down unless I let it sit for 15 minutes *with the power off at the wall*
I have recently carried out clean installs and I'm currently trying out a brand new hard drive with un-upgraded 10.3 with no plists copied over and only one additional application (Firefox). Completely stripped out. I've been through all the easily checkable hardware issued (HD, RAM, Video Card, peripherals, Superdrive). All that is left is an inherent hardware/software incompatibility or a faulty logic board/processor.

Hi! TechToolPro is the only other hardware tester I can think of but it's not free. Tom
