MBP mid '09 crash on wake (OSX 10.8 upgrade)

I upgraded my Lion to mountain lion. This wasn't a clean install, it was a upgrade.
One issue I have now is then whenever my computer goes to sleep, it crashes on wake. I need to do a full reboot. Is there an option that got enabled within "energy saver" for mountain lion that's causing this to happen?

I don't have time immediately to do the re-install of ML. I've downloaded the OS again, and created a bootable install USB drive, but the install has to wait until tomorrow, late afternoon or early evening.
In the meantime: I have removed every 32-bit software item on my machine, just in case. I have initiated Caffeine, which I sometimes use when I am reviewing videos for work. It is now set to infinite, manual invocation, to prevent sleep. I have my screen saver set to 5 minutes, using WordClock (so at least I know the time, and its default screen is black).
Now, at leat, I can walk away from my computer for hours at a time and it'll work when I get back.
The only problem is that now I look at my computer as if it's limping along...

  • After ML upgrade, MBP mid 2010 crashes or freezes when connecting/disconnecting apple cinema display, specially when is put to sleep.

After upgrading to ML, when I connect my MBP mid 2010 to my Cinema Display system crashes, if I close the mac to put it to sleep, it freezes, if I pull the power cord and then disconnect the cinema display,  it freezes to black.
Bottom line... MBP + ML + Cinema Display = Useless aluminum can.
    Any Help??? .... Please????

I have exactly the same problem.  I found that unplugging the Cinema display (both from the MB and power) and re-connecting did exactly nothing, but that the MS Windows solution works:  Reboot your machine.
Note:  the problem comes up when the display sleeps, not the computer.
We are really making progress here with the evolution of OSX!  NOT!

  • MBP mid 2012 crashing, is it the video card?

Hello. I have an mid 2012 MBP with an Intel 4000 graphics card. I think it is causing the computer to crash.
I recently re-installed Civ 5 which ran great last fall. At first it ran OK, then after a few hours of game time my system crashed during a time when the monitor went to sleep (I was walking my baby). This happened a few more times then crashed while open. The system froze and the image was overlayed with some squares consisting of black, green, and lavender bars. At first this only happened when the game was open. The when I tried to reboot I got the beep-beep-beep alarm that means bad RAM(?). So I ran an AHT and it came back fine for RAM and CPU if I understood how to interpret it correctly. Also the system crashed once or twice when the game was not running.
I have tried a partial RAM reboot, a system controller reset, upgrading to 8 GB RAM, and partitioning my hard drive and installing the game in the other partition. If I knew how to get crash logs for the ?panic kernel? I would. Actually, I'm trying to get into code writing and IT so this is pretty interesting. Here is the report i got from EtreCheck

  • 13" MBP Mid 2010 won't wake up after upgrade to Mavericks from Lion

    Hi
I read numerous threads regarding this problem from Mac Minis to Mac Pros and also MBA and MBP.  After upgrade from Lion to Mavericks, my MBP cannot wake up.  I have to hold the power button down to force it to turn off then power it back up from hibernation.  SMC reset, Mavericks reinstalled, Repaired Disk Permission, ram refresh, all done and did not help.
It helps whenever the computer goes to sleep, whether forcefully by choosing Sleep from the Apple Menu or by closing the lid.
Anyone please help, if not, APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS BUG.
    Thanks
    J

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • MBP 15in Mid-2012 crashes often, graphics error and kernel panics

My MBP used to crash almost whenever you pick it up—that was remedied by removing a stick of my RAM from 8GB to 4GB. That was a few months ago, and it seems to be coming back for some reason, not because I pick it up or move it, but it would just freeze up randomly and restart.
I have this piece of information from the most recent crash. Can someone help me decipher it?

I have taken this to the Genius Bar many times and i've been told many different diagnoses, such as replacing the entire Logic Board to just removing a stick of RAM, which seems to have fixed the crashing temporarily. Can someone tell me what exactly might be wrong and what I should do to get this fixed the next time I bring it to support?

Thank you for your quick reply. Also, my computer crashes sometimes due to a "graphics problem". Anything I can provide from the Console for that?

  • MacBook Pro 15" (late 2013) crashes on wake

    Hello!
This 2 weeks old MacBook Pro 15" (late 2013) randomly crashes on wake from sleep.
Machine was working fine for about a week, until I first time experienced the issue.
Since then it has started to happen more and more frequently.
    Here's how it goes:
I open the lid, see the login screen, it might be unresponsive, if not I type in my password and try to login:
OSX freezes and might crash & reboot right away
Or just freeze and I need to manually shutdown by holding down the power button
Usually on the reboot, following the crash, the drive (Apple SSD sm0512f) with OSX is not found, and I get the blinking folder with question mark inside of it
I shutdown again, reboot while holding down Option-key to show the boot drive slection menu. I might have to repeat the reboot several times to get the machine find a drive
I tried to do a full erase and install OSX clean, but the disk utility displays the drive in read only -mode.
    Another thing which happens occasionally:
While using the machine, the built-in keyboard and/or touchpad becomes unresponsive.
This might be followed by a crash & reboot. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it helps if I plugin any USB-device,
such as external keyboard or an iPad, which somehow restores touchpad & kb's functionality.
I think I am dealing with faulty hardware, and should take the machine to repair. What do you think?
Anyone had similar issues which were solved by some software fix?

I'd bring it in, thats what your warranty is for.

Anyone else having trouble with FCPX crashing after the OSX update? It NEVER crashed until the update. The night before last it crashed 20 times in 45 minutes. I can't finish my project because of it.

I don't understand the question. I am simply editing.
There are some patterns of crashes that suggest possible causes and fixes; some users report crashes when FCPX is in the process of loading; others while importing/exporting, etc. Asking to narrow the list of possibilities.
    Suggest starting with three things:
    1) Update the software from the APp Store  if need be.
    2) Trash preferences.
    3) Repair permissions.

  • My MBP mid 2014 is using too much RAM

My MBP mid 2014 is using too much ram on kernel task, and some others what can I do to fix this?

To add to Tim's excellent advice, look at my numbers for my  quad-core i7 iMac with 12GB RAM installed:
As you can see, the system has reserved almost all the available RAM but the swaps are zero and the memory pressure is on the bottom of the scale. My computer runs very fast.
RAM handling in OSX changed with OS10.9 and continues in 10.10. The measures you were using only apply to Mac OSX 10.8 and older.
If your swaps move up into the Gig range, you are probably using a bunch of RAM. You cannot upgrade RAM in a 2014 Retina model so it behooves you to avoid third-party utilities like "FreeMemory,"  keep an eye on Safari extensions, and be frugal with your user login items (System Preferences > Users and Groups > {your account} > Login Items tab).

  • Internet crashing on Lion OSX...

Does anyone know more about internet crashing on Lion OSX?
Since I use Lion I'm feeling all Microsoft again. Things suddenly move, are being deleted or my iMac crashes. If you're about to update... don't! It will save you money, but most of all; a lot of frustration!! Even wanting to go back to Windows (...!!!)
But now I have the Lion version, I have to deal with it. So, what goes wrong now.... my internet connection (only on my iMac, NOT on my iPhone, iPad or any other device) stops from time to time. I have to restart my iMac to make it work again.
Does anyone now an easier / faster way? / Now how to reach Apple people to fix these bugs (can't believe I'm asking this)

Don't know, but try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release].

  • My MBP (mid 09)/ folder with a flashing question mark.

My MBP (mid 09) is showing a folder with a flashing question mark. I tried the usual things like PRAM Reset and booting with a external drive. I also changed the hard drive and could use it as a external drive on an other Mac - so this seems to work. Another drive could not be used too. The Apple Hardware Test does not work - my Superdrive is broken. Any ideas?

  • MBP mid 2010 - 15" 2,4Ghz (Battery Problem)

    Hi guys.
I have a MBP mid 2010. My battery wont last more that 4.30 hours.
I have tried more than enough times to test' it.
Last Night with fully charged battery I was able to get 4.40 Hours.
    Bluetooth OFF
    Low monitor brightness
    Low keyboard illumination
    Air Port was on.
Basically web browsing and 4 or 5 youtube videos.
Did not make any software instalation or updates.
4.30 hours its just to low.
BTW it as 37 full charges
My work laptop wich is a Dell Latitude E6400 with a 9cell battery I get more than 5 hours. And it as way more full charge cycles.

Certainly not... but I'd rather source a complete antiglare clamshell lid and slap it on myself thus upgrading the machine, as long as I know I wouldn't have to replace the logic board as well... I've done plenty of surgery on notebooks, from removing a stuck business-card shaped CD from a 12" PowerBook G4 (requiring *complete* disassembly of the machine) to swapping ThinkPad T61 motherboards into T60 chassis creating a 15" 4:3 IPS FrankenPad which can take 8GB of ram... so I can handle swapping a display.
Local apple store hasn't told me clearly whether or not it's possible, just that they will only replace it with the original screen...
I can only find one logic board part # for a 2.4GHz mid-2010 15" MBP, which suggests to me that upgrading the screen should be no problem, but I'd love to hear from someone who's done it or can give a definitive answer as to whether or not it's possible...

  • Can I system restore a purchased mbp mid 2010 but keep the upgraded OS?

I purchased a used MBP mid 2010 and had the seller meet me at the apple store. After I verified the computer was not stolen I asked to have it factory wiped, but they said I needed an appointment. Now I've read directions on this forum on how to restore it myself, is it the same technique they use in the store? Can I restore this machine and keep mavericks or must it be restored to the original OS?

    fastcash124,
when Mavericks is downloaded from the Mac App Store, it is non-transferable; the seller should have wiped it from the internal drive before selling it to you. Once you’ve done a clean reïnstallation of Snow Leopard and run Software Update to get it to Mac OS X 10.6.8, you can then download and install your own (non-transferable) copy of Mavericks from the Mac App Store.

First, you can install Microsoft's Security Essentials in the Win 7 VM and keep it up-to-date. Second, you can turn off Sharing in Fusion's System Settings to keep the VM environment separate from your Mac. Third, you can look into Sophos Anti-Virus http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition/download.aspx for the Mac host.

Genius bar says possible faulty HD, but I suspect logic board. All checks out OK on the Apple Diagnostic bench. Can a Logic board go intermittant?? Any Ideas any body??

Ive repaired 1000s of laptops over the years (translate: diagnose and replace parts).
Its not that old, Ive owned 100s of laptops (most were free) ....some I still have are nearly 13 years old and still perfect, ....some extremely expensive ones died in under a year.
other than becoming obsolete at some point, there isnt really any "will spoil on" data like Milk for solid state computer parts, ....alas.
You can have a $5000 laptop die in 4 months, and a junker one keep kicking after 10 years.... Ive seen that firsthand countless times.
Common logic dictates that "very expensive = long life" in computers,..... but all the repair people will tell you just the opposite.
I know you have a gripe, I get that all too well honestly .

Hi there, same problem here but on a PowerPC.
I just bought AE7 and installed it on my G5 (with then 10.3.7 running on it). Install went fine but the application would not start up.
Thought this might be a good time to clean up and installed fresh new system on this G5, updated it to 10.3.8 and first thing: installed AE7 again.
But: same problem. In fact, all Adobe application will not start up! The icon bounces a little and then nothing but a crash report.
For a moment I thought I had the solution, because I disabled all the "user fonts". Everything worked fine. Then I installed, as before, my Apple applications (Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, etc) and, oh no... same problem over again. The Adobe application will not start up!
Tried to disable all non essential fonts: no cure. This is driving me crazy....
    Any suggestions?
