MBP mid 2009 sudden HDD issues / slow and unresponsive

Hello all,
First of all i want to apologize if there was a similar topic, but ive tried looking with no result. I am in a big crisis and i think this forum is my only way of finding a solution.
The problem started yesterday, when all of a sudden my computer became unresponsive (finder and apps), although music from itunes continued playing. I had no choice but to **** it down with the button.
When i turned it back on, i got the blinking folder with the question mark. Tried all the advice with no success. Then i opened the computer, checked the flex cable and the hdd which both seemed fine. Closed it back up, started it up again and the same story. Then i moved the computer after half an hour and the thing booted normally. The only obvious thing was that programs tended to freeze for a minute or two and i get the umbrella and then it works.
Since im a photographer i have lots of work on it and immediately bought an external hdd for backup. Time machine wasnt successful since it worked so slowly and it worked on intervals. 2 mins of copying, 5 mins of nothing and really slow ( the hdd graph in activity monitor showed continious spikes with a flat line inbetween. I gave up on that and now im copying the important stuff manually which seems to be working fine.
However the computer still has a big issue - i am hoping its the flex cable, since it suddey started working. In case of hdd failure i dont think i would be able to get back in and use it? The hdd is a year old, its the seagate hybrid - momentus 750xt and the os is mountain lion.
Does anyone have a clue or a tip what to do? I have to order the flex cable via ebay since there are no authorised deLers for apple that have spare parts available here in Lisbon, Portugal. Im afraid making a clean install wont help , although on a windows computer id do that the first thing..
Thanks a lot for any help, im desperate and i have a few weddings to edit this month, and since i study abroud this is the only xomputer i can use!
Regards, Jaka

It does seem to be the internal cable or connection is faulty, but only on an intermittent basis.
My suggestion is to backup your data on an external HDD using Disk Utility>Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner.  This will create a drive that will enable you to boot your MBP and use it externally until you get your cable replaced.
Ciao.

I updated my macbook pro mid 2009 to 10.9.4 and now it moves slow and rainbow wheels frequently. Is there a quick and easy fix? I tried looking online but things seemed very confusing. Any help would be appreciated.

I got a rainbow wheel when attempting to click on a pic in Iphoto. I can copy and paste the next time I have a problem but here is what I have so far.

  • MBP mid 2009, Mountain Lion and PRESONUS FP10

    Hello!
I have an opportunity to buy used Presonus FP10, but I am not sure is it completely compatible with my MBP - mid 2009, CORE 2 DUO and Mountain Lion and Logic Pro 9???
It is very good interface but a bit outdated, so I am worried! I don't want to spend my money if it won't work on my MAChine!
    Thank you!

    Hi, Damon
I gave up from buying it. As I didn't get any valid information about FP, I stopped thinking about it. I've been looking all over the Internet and came up with Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. Somehow, I find it even better choice, so we will see it tomorrow! I hope it is boxed with Firewire Adapter (400-800), too. It is 777 KM which is about 500 $.
    Is it worth the money?
If it is compatible with Lion, I assume it should work with ML, too!

  • Have a MBP mid 2009, had mavericks, changed hard drive and now have 10.6.8 and can't update to mavericks again. Any help?

    Hi,
I Have a MBP mid 2009, 8 Gb RAM, had mavericks, changed hard drive to get more space (500Gb) and couldn't restart from time machine so had to install Snow Leopard, now have OS 10.6.8 and can't update to mavericks again. Any help?

You did not contact us. This is just a user to user forum where we try to help each other out. No one here works for Apple and as far as we know Apple do not even come here. Ring back the number you originally called on and ask for an explanation.
    Cheers

  • My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd.

My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd. Earlier I thought this behavior is due to spotlight indexing but it finished after 3 days. I deleted all caches from library. But no luck, still running extremely slow. I checked activity monitor for cpu usage, it shows above 90% is idle. The memory usage always shows PM - 4 GB, Memory Used 3.96 GB, VM - 4 GB, Swaped used 0 bytes, App Memory 1.82 GB, File Cache 1.44 GB, Wired Memory 480 MB.
    Thanks in adavnce for help.

Was it the combo updater that was installed or the OS X 10.9.3 update. There is a difference.
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.

Hi everyone! On my MacBook Air Mid 2009 13" hinges are broken, and i don't have warinty on it anymore.!
    What should I do?
    Thanks!

Still take it to an Apple store genius bar so you can get feedback on what it will cost for repair.
You can also see if you can find an Apple Authorized Service Provider and get a price from them, their work is accepted by Apple.
You can check iFixit.com and see if they have the hinge and price so you have another price for comparison.

  • I have a MacBook (mid 2009) running 10.8.3 and want to install a Windows operating system. Which version of Boot Camp and which version of windows do I need.

I have a MacBook (mid 2009) running 10.8.3 and need to install Windows, at least XP, to run some software for work. What version of Boot Camp will work and where do I get a licensed copy of XP or Windows 7

The version of Boot Camp on your Mac will work, you must buy a copy of Windows 7 or 8 (not XP)
Windows drivers can be downloaded from here.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Firefox slow and unresponsive with facebook and zynga and then locks up for all other tabs open

I finally had to uninstall the beta 4 version as I couldn't take the issues any longer. The browser would become slow and then totally unresponsive mostly when using facebook and zynga. however, all tabs would become slow and unresponsive and would have to be rebooted. It wouldn't be 5 minutes and it would have to be done again. Even without facebook/zynga loaded in a tab, the entire browser is unbelievably slow. I am running mac os x 10.5.8.
I went back to the old version until I hear back as I just don't have time to sit and wait and wait and wait only to have to reboot the program constantly.

I found a "work around". I installed Incredible Bookmarks 0.7.3. That allows me to add an additional Bookmarks Toolbar without causing the bouncing problem.
Putting bookmarks in the IB bar was a little tricky. It allows customization, but only to the extent of choosing bookmarks by topic or by a subdirectory of the Bookmarks Menu. What I actually put on the toolbar are such subdirectories (or folders), so I normally could only put one at a time. (This problem doesn't exist with the Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar, which allows you to copy subfolders, not just individual bookmarks).
I solved the problem by moving the additional folders I wanted to put in the IB Toolbar into a folder I (cleverly) called "IB Toolbar", then selected that for the actual Toolbar. The result: a row of folders, exactly what I wanted. (Actually, it's a second row of folders, since I still have the original Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar.)
I'd still prefer MultiRow, but that doesn't appear to be working with Firefox 3.6.18 and higher, so until I upgrade to Firefox 5 (and see if the Plus version will work) this will have to do.

  • My MacBook pro is running very slow and unresponsive.

My MacBook pro is running very slow and unresponsive. I have mid 2010 model running on lion. Past few days it looks very unresponsive. Tried to reinstall lion as clean copy. Still no luck. Any help on this is much appreciated !

Things That Can Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Itunes 11.1.1 slow and unresponsive

Since updating Itunes it has been very slow and unresponsive when trying to look at my podcast list. It is also automatically downloading the latest episode even though my selection is set to off.

noticed the same thing after i upgraded. after clicking on podcasts library itunes would freeze additionally when clicking on my iphone in itunes and selecting the podcast tap, itunes would beachball for 20-30 seconds. So I opened activity monitor and noticed everytime I selected podcast library or the podcasts to sync under the device network activity would skyrocket and itunes would freeze until it completed. It only occurs with podcasts.... Out of curiosity I turned wifi off, connected ethernet -> same prolem. The interesting part is if I disconnect ethernet and disable wifi everything is lightning fast, no delays, and no apparent issues other than the fact you cannot download new episodes.

  • Lightroom 5 (5.1, 5.2 and now 5.3RC) SLOW and unresponsive on Mavericks

Hello! I am having issues using Lightroom 5 (from first rel to 5.3RC). In the specificity it is rather slow and unresponsive. As soon as I edit something I get spinning wheel, sometimes editings work immediatly other times it is very laggish.
I have a late 2008 2.4ghz Macbook pro, 8gb ram, OWC SSD (with both application, catalogue, files and previews on). I edit 16mp raw files copied as DNG. Did not have problems with lightroom 4. Camera raw cache is set to 20gb on the SSD. Catalogue is very small (less than 500 pictures), as I use it only for editing and then I export and archive the JPGs separately. I have to say that perormance decreased after updating to Mavericks but it was not particularly good with Mountain Lion either.
I tried all the usual things (flushing caches, rebuilding previews, starting new catalogue, etc.) but to no avail. It looks like Lightroom 5 actually works rather worse than 4 performance wise, and that Mavericks does not help. Anyone with the same problems? Does anybody have suggestions on how to improve it?
    Many thanks!

    So no clues whatsoever?
I have now worked quite a lot with the 5.3RC on Mavericks and I noticed that the main problem is the library module. As soon as I enter the develop module all is fine and it works pretty well. Editing is snappy and so forth. The library module is really laggish. Every two or three pictures that I only look at I get the spinning wheel, when I delete a file, spinning wheel, when I double click to enlarge a file, spinning wheel. I work with raw files converted to DNG, but I get the same problem with unconverted JPGS. The weird thing it that since I updated to Mavericks the whole JPG handling gives spinning wheels, i.e. when I Quicklook a JPG from Finder I have to wait a bit for it to load. Does anybody share my experience?

  • Slow and unresponsive after iOS4 update

While the new features are nice, the slow down is not.
My 3G now seems slow and unresponsive in all Apps and generally.
Not very happy with that to be honest, don't see why it should be slower.

I have had the same problem with my iPhone using the iOS4 update. I reset my iPhone and it was still slow. I also fully turned it off and waited a whole day and turned it on (resulted in a minor improvement to speed). I can't use multi tasking etc because I don't have the 3GS phone. I also had an issue where I couldn't open up iTunes!! I pressed the icon, and the phone froze in the iTunes screen without displaying any albums etc..... then it returned to the home screen. I repeated the process 3 times with the same result. It did eventually open up on the 4th time and played a song. I am not very impressed with the performance of my iPhone after the software update and will give it another week or so to see if Apple release any "fixes" after that I'm going to revert back to the old software.
