MBP not charging, green or amber light not on, but registers plugged in?

MBP not charging, green or amber light not on, but registers plugged in?

In the menu bar, does it indicate that the battery is being charged or is charged?  If so you have a finicky led on your power adapter, like I do.  I either ignore it or give it a little jiggle or a few 'snaps' and it usually comes back on.
If it is not charging then you may have a faulty power adapter and try another one to see if that is the case.  Borrow one or go to the Apple store and use one of theirs.
Ciao.

    ronicr76,
First it would be helpful if you post the exact model, year and OS version you have.
    > The LED light is on but only when the laptop is closed<
So that light is the sleep indicator and tells us that the laptop is going to sleep when you close the lid. That would be normal behavior so the machine is still working. Possibly you're experiencing a backlight failure. With the machine supposedly "on" use a flashlight to carefully examine the screen. Do you see the desktop? Yes? machine is still running and something is wrong with the backlight.
You should immediately backup your computer or at the very least pull vital files off. With the computer hooked to another Mac (The way this is done depends on the exact MacBook, E.g.FireWire 800 to FireWire 800.) Then you restart the computer and hold the "t" key down. This puts your MacBook into "target mode":
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
Once your files are off try an SMC reset:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Are you able to get the backlight back on by opening and closing the display? Yes? Broken backlight cable refer to qualified service place. Even if it doesn't come on and you can still see the desktop with a flashlight it is still probably the backlight. Could be the a backlight problem also.

  • Airport Express amber light is flashing, but I'm connected. How come?

Oddities abound in computerland, but this one takes the cake: I bought an Airport Express base station last week at the Danbury CT Apple Store, then spent hours, days, trying to set up a wireless base and establish a connection with my MacMini and my new AsusEee PC. I read and reread the Setup Guide; consulted every forum and every applicable website, all to no avail. I unplugged and replugged the cable modem, reset the A.E. to the factory settings, downloaded the latest version of Airport Utility, but the amber light flashed on and on.
Then, about fifteen minutes ago, after accessing various settings that had produced nada results on previous occasions, a window appeared on my monitor telling me I was successfully connected, and by gum, I am! But I have no idea why--by that time I was too confused to be able to retrace my path.
Then, with fingers crossed, I set up the little AsusEee PC for wireless connectivity, and that too connected successfully. BUT the Airport Express light, which has never turned green, continues to flash amber!
How can this be? I'm pleased as proverbial punch, but I don't dare touch anything for fear of turning gold to dust. Does anyone have any insightful comments?

When at first you don't succeed.....
Well, since my last post--4/18--I spent many more hours and resets trying to get the fool thing working, and yesterday when I was just about ready to pack the AX up and take back to the Apple Store, I connected. How and why I do not know. Maybe it was all the resets; maybe it was kismet. Anyway, the green light is on and steady; I was also able to connect my AsusEee, and for the time at least I'm a happy keyboard tapper.
    Hang in there, guys!

  • Comcast put in a new modem today and I reactivated my airport.  Even though I get a flashing amber light (not green) I still am connected to the internet.  What should I do?

Comcast gave me new modem today.  Synced with Airport.  Amber light still flashing, but I still am connected to internet OK.  Should I be worried the light isn't "green?"

Should I be worried the light isn't "green?"
    Yes, you should.
What version of operating system are you using on your MacBook Pro?  If you do not know, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac.
Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

  • New shuffle will not fully charge. green light never comes on

can leave my shuffle docked all day, never fully charges till the green light comes on. only amber light. its not my computer or usb cable or my settings as my sons nano charges just fine thru the usb. this shuffle is 5 days old.
    [Edited by host.]

I agree with you sir....same problem with me....my 2nd shuffle is a week old.....I have never ever seen a steady green or an orange light even after 20 hours of continuous charging though an USB 2.0 port on a Win XP Pro desktop PC....All I see is a blinking orange....I have tried following the doc that was suggested to you....reseting it five times......nothing works......contacted apple chat support.....they ran me through the same steps.....does not work....trying a different port and a different computer does not help either....I go to the local apple-authorized dealer from where I bought the shuffle....they have look at me as if I just spoke some fluent Chinese!!...they have absolutely no idea of what I am talking about....they are very ignorant...I am extremely disappointed.....showing them the apple support pages drew the reaction "Oh my god...what are these pages all about...why do they even exist?"......I have done a better job at looking at a solution....but so far I have not been able to find a solution to this problem.......Can someone offer a solution!!!!!!!...........
I am just waiting to discharge it completely and then check it for the last time before I take it back to the store....

the battery of my macbook pro will not charge and the LED light is only green. What to do?

    This might help:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller ...
Otherwise, you should probably take your computer in to a service place to be tested, since there a a few possible causes of this behavior.

Well the blinking light shows it's charging, however just to make sure.
Reset the SMC, then connect the machine to a power source that doesn't have a lot of other power items on the same lines (in the walls) in the same room and see how it is in the morning.
For instance use a powerline in another spare room that isn't being used as much.

The model 2,1 MacBook has an easily removable battery. You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

    Removing the battery:
Shut down the computer. Disconnect any cords connected to the computer.
    Turn the computer over.
Locate the battery latch on one side of the battery.
Use a coin to turn the latch a quarter-turn clockwise. The battery should pop up slightly.
    Lift the battery out.
    Installing the battery:
Place the right side of the battery into the battery compartment at an angle, as shown below.
Gently press the left side of the battery down until it sits flat.
While holding the battery down, use a coin to turn the latch a quarter-turn counter-clockwise. The battery should lock into place.
Note: Keep in mind that once the new battery is inserted, you will need to press the power button to start up the computer.

  • Magsafe Adapter show amber light but it's not charging.

I have a problem with my Macbook Air (Mid 2011), when I plug the Magsafe AC Power Adapter sometimes just doesn't charge the battery, sometimes shows the green light and sometimes the amber light.
I tried restarting the SMC, also I tried to use other Magsafe Adapter. Even I tested the Magsafe with another Macbook and works fine.
I already cleaned both ports with a toothbrush.
I don't know what else I can do. Please help me.

Do you have a friend with a MacBook? If so try their power adapter and see if that works. If it does then you have a bad power adapter. And check this Apple Support article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

  • MBP not charging

My MBP power cord has suddenly started showing an amber light and stating "not charging" on the screen. When I plug n he adapter the light is green fr a second then goes amber.
I take out my battery and the power cord keeps the machine going fine with a green light on.
Problem with the battery? Any fixes? Of is it another new battery?

I'm on an MBP 17" and the same problem just occurred on mine. The problem fixed itself while I was surfing for an answer, and it appears circumstantially that in my case the MBP was too COLD. I had taken it out of its backpack to charge after bringing it in from the trunk in sub-freezing temperatures. It had not climatized sufficiently, I guess. But surfing gently brought the temperature up to where the power manager kicked in.
    Hope that helps somebody.

  • Battery not charging and MBP not waking up from sleep

I've got both of these issues happening. Sounds like I just have to wait it out on the sleep issue until a point at which Apple will issue a fix. The battery not charging is becoming especially frustrating though. I've had the computer for about a month and it just started a few days ago. I've checked the battery to see if it qualifies for replacement and it has the correct model number but the s/n has a different last for digits. I've unplugged/removed battery/held down the power button and no change, the battery still does not charge. Seeing as the MBP will run with the power cable inserted and the battery removed, I'm assuming that the cable's ok, the light has rarely come on at all lately -- no green or amber. Any advice here? I'm getting pretty frustrated with this thing.

I met the same issue, the difference is while i touch the track pad or move mouse or hit keyboard, the screen responds rapidly and then back to black. tap the keyboard, it beeps... I can do nothing except "command+control+power" to restart or long press power to power off it.
I found it only happens after I installed 10.8.2, it works well before 10.8.2 update.
    any help please?

  • MBP is "Not Charging" but is plugged into the wall..

    Hello
I have a 2.2ghz MBP purchased February 2007. I just noticed recently a couple things... First the computer would say "Not charging" even though it is plugged into the wall, the LED on the charger would be green. The screen would also lit up more as if it is plugged in and if I remove the connector, it dims as usual. It would still say that "Not Charging." Another thing is the LED does not lit up sometimes in charging, stays colorless. The charger is great condition, no damages to it. The battery on the computer holds a strong charge in the past. What could be the problem? Hardware or software?
Thanks for viewing! Appreciate any thoughts!
    Mark

You could always reset the SMC in case that might be a factor. The green light indicates that the power adaptor is not charging--the amber light indicates that the power adaptor is charging. If the battery is over 95% charged, it won't charge unless the charge drops lower. If you run off of the battery for a while, will the power adaptor be amber when you plug it back in and it starts charging?
As for the LED not lighting up at all when the battery is charging, I have no explanation for that. Possibly the LED itself is burned out or not working properly for some reason. Does the battery still seem to charge normally after it has been discharged a bit?

  • Macbook won't turn on, won't charge either (no green/amber light)

So I was cleaning my keyboard today (just with water and a towel) and after cleaning, the screen shut off but my macbook was still turned on (could hear the fans). It wouldn't respond to anything and I tried a hard shut down but this did not work either. I was forced to take the battery out to shut it down.
Now it won't turn on. I tried plugging it into my magsafe power adapter but it won't charge. There is no light (neither green or amber). My battery still has 2 green dots when I test it.
I've tried resetting the power settings by removing the charger, battery, and then holding the power down for 5 seconds. This did not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a very similar problem. My battery died about nine months ago and I've been going off AC since then. It recently started not turning on though.. I closed the lid one day and went for a walk and when I came back about an hour later it was like it was in a constant sleep mode. Since then it turned on once successfully. But I am getting the same dim green light for about three seconds and then it goes full. When I try to turn it on the fan or hard drive (not sure) starts spinning and the screen flashes but then it just sits with the sleep light on. When I read your thread though I realized I may have gotten it wet when carrying it to and from my car. I no longer have a warranty or care plan or whatever so apple won't help me one bit. SO yeah I thought I'd share that and maybe it can help you somehow..
