MBP not charging suddenly

2007 Aluminium body MBP, 2.16 GHz core duo, 2GB RAM
Suddenly out of nowhere my MBP has stopped charging.  Battery is less than a year old, Magsafe works fine on another Macbook.  All has been working fine today.  I was using my MBP on the train home, putting it to sleep a few times while I switched trains and walked home.  Then I got home, and it had shut itself down despite having battery power left.  Started it up fine.
Now I tried plug the Magsafe in to charge it and the light on the Magsafe went green for about 1 second then off.  First thought was, it's a battery problem, but it's not working even with the battery out.  Then I thought, it's a Magsafe problem, but the Magsafe works in another computer fine.  I cleaned out my Magsafe connection so it's not that.
Tried SMC reset several times.  No change.
Any ideas what it could be?  Logic board?

I have spent the last week or so trying to get my MBP running again, and I have succeeded, but only for the short term.
I tried replacing the battery, this didn't work at all, the MBP didn't even boot up from a new, charged battery.
A brief bit of research led me to understand it would be either the magsafe left I/O board, the power cable that connects to the logic board, or the logic board itself, and that I should investigate in that order.
So, I got a left I/O board and replaced it using this guide:  https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Core+Duo+Model+A1150+Left+I-O+B oard+Replacement/504
When I put the Magsafe in, the light came on but after about 4 seconds I heard fizzing and a burning smell and then a tiny puff of smoke.  Upon examination the replacement I/O board had blown a circuit right above the headphone jack.  I decided that this was a duff I/O board and just bad luck.  Though, in reality, I have no idea whether this was a consequence of a different or bigger issue, and no idea whether this incident led to any damage on the logic board.
I got another left I/O board and repeated the process.  This time, same thing, except that the fizzing and burning seemed to be definitely located around the logic board.  The power was not left in for very long, but my heart was sinking all the same.  I took the logic board out using this guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Core+Duo+Model+A1150+Logic+Boar d+Replacement/498  and took a look at it.  I noticed that there was one spot which looked like charring but not certain.
My next step was to replace the multicoloured power/battery cable that connects the I/O and logic board.  I did this, but I don't think it made a difference as again I had some fizzing, but then it stopped, and the Magsafe stayed on, and the battery started charging.  However, I was keen to rexamine the logic board so I took it out and noticed that the charring looked worse.  I took to see how bad it was by trying to wipe it off, and as I did that one of the components with the charring just dropped off.  I don't know what the component is, so have included a picture here so that somebody might help me ID it:
http://postimg.org/image/5g3gxf3el/
I have a tiny bit of hope that because there are three of these components in a row, that if one goes down the other two might take the load... probably doesn't work like that!
Once this component came off, I cleared up the charring and put the logic board back in and connected it to the power board.  At this point I ran power through the machine to see how the logic board behaved.  No obvious burning, BUT it got very hot very quickly.  My question at this point is, did it get hot because I didn't have it plugged up to everything?  If that makes sense?
Anyway.  I put everything back in place mostly because I had reached the end of what I could do with it, I think.  I put the Magsafe in place and the machine booted up automatically.  All good.  I shut it down and let the battery charge for ten minutes.  Again, I noticed that the logic board was getting warm, even when powered down, and not just because it was charging, but not as hot as it got the first time.
With the keyboard back in place and the casing screwed back together, I can now run my MBP seemingly as normal.  I cannot tell whether it is any hotter than usual but I am running my fans at high RPM to be sure, and registering a temperature of around 50 degrees C.  I also am going to go back in and reapply some new thermal paste to the heatsinks when it arrives.
So, long story short, my MBP is running again, but with a new I/O board, new power/battery cable, and without a tiny component (to be ID'd) from the logic board and probably at a high temperature.   I have backed up and now just keeping an eye on it, waiting for an inevitable failure!
(I took my MBP and story to the genius bar this morning and as expected, the guy just informed me that my logic board sounds like it's dead or dying and I should invest in a new Mac...)
Next thing, my battery is saying Replace Soon, which I am not thrilled about given it's 14 months old.  Here's the read out.  Does this make sense?

MBP not charging, green or amber light not on, but registers plugged in?

In the menu bar, does it indicate that the battery is being charged or is charged?  If so you have a finicky led on your power adapter, like I do.  I either ignore it or give it a little jiggle or a few 'snaps' and it usually comes back on.
If it is not charging then you may have a faulty power adapter and try another one to see if that is the case.  Borrow one or go to the Apple store and use one of theirs.

  • MBP not charging

My MBP power cord has suddenly started showing an amber light and stating "not charging" on the screen. When I plug n he adapter the light is green fr a second then goes amber.
I take out my battery and the power cord keeps the machine going fine with a green light on.
Problem with the battery? Any fixes? Of is it another new battery?

I'm on an MBP 17" and the same problem just occurred on mine. The problem fixed itself while I was surfing for an answer, and it appears circumstantially that in my case the MBP was too COLD. I had taken it out of its backpack to charge after bringing it in from the trunk in sub-freezing temperatures. It had not climatized sufficiently, I guess. But surfing gently brought the temperature up to where the power manager kicked in.
    Hope that helps somebody.

  • MBP Not Charging During Games/Rendering?

    Good day all,
I am having problems with my MBP 15" 2011.
I am an avid gamer and I do some picture renderings on programs such as Sketchup (with plugins etc)
And I noticed one weird thing. When I am plugged in at the start with the battery showing: 100% and the power plug on, After rendering or gaming for say 1 hr-ish the battery starts to drop and worse of all it could sometimes die on me.
Any one facing similar issues? or have any advice? Right now, I have itunes on, skype on, safari, and SC2 and its already NOT CHARGING. and battery is @ 2%..
    >_<~
    Cheers.
    ian
PS. Man.. nowadays you cant call MBP a laptop any more.. its so hot.. How can anyone put it on their laps ? :/

Some applications and games can actually use more power than the MagSafe adapter provides and so drains the extra required from the battery, the battery can not charge in this state and it only starts when you quit the game/application.

  • MBP not charging, but light is green...

My MBP says it is "Not Charging", is stuck at 92% (has been for a day or so), and the light on the adaptor's cord is green, as if it's completely charged. It says it's running off the Power Adaptor.
I'm not really sure what to do, this is my first Mac and the first time I've had a problem after a year or so. Do I need a replacement battery?
As a side note, I had noticed what I think, now, to be swelling and bulging of the battery back in May, although I didn't understand the problem back then. It seemed to fix itself on its own, because it's since gone down and the laptop is even once again. Additionally, a week before now, the Power Adaptor light continually kept switching from orange to green, 100% and 99%, never fully charging. I thought that had fixed itself as well, but... Could these be signs it is reaching the end of its days?
    Thanks for your help.

When was the last time you calibrated the battery?

  • MBP "Not Charging" with load

MY MBP now with Lion, often shows "Not Charging" in the menu when running a Flash file
from a site.  Temp increase (180°±) until I quite the app.  this isn't true with a heavey load from
Photoshop CS5 in 64bit running mutipule Actions on a 400 mg file.
    suggestions?

  • MBP not charging. instead of % says X. bat warped

< My MBP wont charge. I can only use it when it is plugged in. My little batter says "X" instead of a charging and percent...
The sad thing is the actually battery itself is WARPED and its not under the recall!!!!!!!
    WHAT DO I DO?
    macbook pro

If the battery has warped , it is more than likely that the pin connectors are not connecting properly hence you get the "X" sign . Whether is it covered by the recall or not , that sort of thing is certainly covered by warranty.
The warping must have happened due to excessive heat or some sort of other production error.
Depending on where you are, either call AppleCare or go to an Apple store to speak to someone.
    Good luck

  • Macbook Pro battery not charging suddenly

    Hi,
This morning, I was using my computer, no problem. And then I plug it in and start writing a paper. Then I saw the battery indicator as green so I pulled it out and the computer shut down. When I turned it back on I realized that it was running on charger. It said that battery condition "Replace Soon." Then I turned it off again, reset the SMC and I saw an X on battery icon, saying no battery is there. I restarted it again and now it saysreplace soon again.
What is causing this? Do I have to get the battery replaced and pay or is it apple's fault since the battery died in like 2 hours? It was fine this morning, used it on battery power for almost 3 hours.
    Any suggestions??

I have a MBP which I purchased in 2009 July, I have noticed when I charge my MB the last goes up to only 97% and the battery lasts only for about an hour and a half. I am still under warranty till 2012.
How much is to to change the battery at apple, or is it covered under the warranty and how long will it take.

here is what I have on the Details and specifically does the current being 0.00A have anything to do with it? or the cycle count ... what is it normally suppose to be?

I am having a similar problem with my T60. From this thread I figured I needed a new battery,  so I bought a 42T4619. I inserted the battery into the laptop and it showed 25% charge, so I went ahead and let it charge down to 4% to cycle it before putting it on the AC adaptor.
However, now that it's on the AC adaptor I am still getting 0 current even though the battery showes to be in a 'Charging' state (particulars below).

  • IPhone 4S will not charge suddenly?

Plugged in my phone to charge. The charging symbol came up and a few hours later no charge. It stayed as the same percentage. Is the any advice other than reset the phone?

    Hello vitaminddeficient,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I found the following article that covers this topic on issues with charging an iPhone:
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
Please take note of the following section:
    Resolving issues
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.
    Take care,
    Alex H.
