MBP not closing applications upon shutdown

I was very happy with Lion, until I noticed that my applications are not closed on shutdown. When my computer restarts every application that I do not force quit prior to shutdown opens.
Any help would be appreciated.

This is not a bug, it is a feature !  From Apple's description of Lion:
Now apps you close will reopen right where you left off, so you never have to start from scratch again. And when you install software updates, you no longer need to save your work, close your apps, and spend valuable time setting everything up again. With Resume, you can restart your Mac and return to what you were doing — with all your apps in the places where you left them.
In the System Preferences --> General pane, there is an option you can unclick that says "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".  That may help.

  • MBP not closing flush..

    Hello all,
    My dad has taken delivery of a new MBP and I have noticed the lid does not close properly, it looks bowed and there is about 3mm (1/8") gap at the L/R corners, although the latch does close. Just wanted to know if this is a common thing among MBP's. It's slightly disappointing to have spent that amount of money for a piece of hardware that has not undergone QC out inspection and allowed to reach the shelves?? Anybody of the same opinion?
    I raved about these MBP aswell to him and encouraged him to switch from his PC only to be presented with a sub standard product. Not a good start to the one that he had hoped. Apart from the hardware issue it functions ok and has connected to our wireless router with ease. Ive also noticed that the dock appears 'laggy' when running the mouse pointer across it, using my MB and Tiger the desktop experience is smooth. Again it feels like a rather inferior product and less brushed than tiger. Just my opinion but an honest one

    I dont want to sound like ive turned into an Apple hater! I have other products in my house by Apple, Wireless N router, various iPods, my Black MB and my lass has a late 2006 MBP (the lid closes flush BTW) and im keen to get a new iMac. Apple has really changed my computer experience with hassle free computing. The MBP is a beautiful piece of work it just the little things in life that make it count.... and if your gonna do something...then do it right..not 1/2 finished!!! LOL! Anyway thanks for all the input to my topic, its why these forums are an essential tool in trouble shooting!!

    P.S. No Kelly i dont lift the lid by the edges i release it by the pushing the latch button then lifting it from the centre. Remember this is a new MBP and ive noticed it after ive given it the once over!!

    Sounds like Firefox is "hanging at exit". That problem is frequently caused by an Extension or a Plugin. Read all of the following articles.<br /><br />

  • Bittorrent not closing down and preventing mac shutdown

    Bittorrent is not closing down and when I try to shut down my mac it is prevented because bittorrent is still running. Does anyone know how I can over come this problem?

    Press COMMAND-OPTION-ESC to open the Task Manager. Select BitTorrent in the list and click the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work. Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder, select the BitTorrent process in the process list then click on the Quit icon in the toolbar, then click on the Force Quit button.
    If none of this works then hold down the Power button for 5-10 seconds and the computer will shutdown. Then you can restart. Running down the battery is not a good solution.

  • Ending (not just closing) applications

    Before the update, I would press and hold the Home button to be sure an app was closed and not running in the background and draining my battery, but since the update, that isn't working anymore. For example, to shut off my iPod, I can only pause it, not completely shut it off.

    Folks, this is a non issue due to the simple fact that the iPhone OS DOES NOT ALLOW APPLICATIONS TO RUN IN THE BACKGROUND! - it never did! Background processes are limited to a very few NATIVE Apple functions - iPod playback is one. When you stop a song from playing and then hit your home button, the iPod application is NOT still "running" in the background. The iPod application simply stores your last song/movie/whatever and the location within the clip to allow you to resume playback.
    Once you hit the home button to exit an application, that app is completely closed and no longer taking a toll on your processor or battery. This is the reason why Apple implemented push notifications in 3.0 - so applications can still alert you of activity (i.e. an incoming im or a news alert) without the app running in the background. Instead, the monitoring takes place in the "cloud" (remote servers) that sends a message to an Apple server which in turn pushes a txt alert to your device. No process or backgroun apps are actually ever running on the iPhone, even for these new notifications!

  • Upon opening Outlook 2003 get message "Not closed properly. File is being checked for erros."

    When opening Outlook 2003 get an error message stating that is was not closed propertly and that the file is being checked. It can sometimes take up to 5-10
    minutes for outlook to open. How can I stop this?

    You need to figure out why Outlook is not closing property. The usual culprits are addins that access Outlook data. 
    Are you closing outlook before shutting down windows? If you let windows shut it down, you can corrupt the pst. 
    Does it work better in Safe mode? To open Outlook in Safe mode: Close Outlook then hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon. You'll get a message asking if you want to start in Safe mode. Click Ok.

  • Saving state of machine upon Shutdown?

    Is there a way to save my machine state upon shutdown such that when I start-up my computer again, everything is restored to the original state? Unsaved documents should remain unsaved.
    Something similar happens when the my MBP runs out of battery and the OS saves the "state" before going on standby. Upon plugging it back in to a power source, a line of white dots flash across the screen while the system state is restored.
    I presume this works because there's still some juice left on the battery for the OS to "remember" the state. Hence, I am led to believe that the same thing should be possible upon shutdown, as long as there's some juice left to store the state. Thoughts?

    No. If it it shutdown, it is shutdown. Hibernation, as Malcolm has posted will put the machine to sleep preserving everything but that is not shut down.
    If it shuts down the files are saved. They may not be saved as in the way the application saves them but they would HAVE to be copied to the HD to keep them if the machine is shut down.

    Thanks  a lot for your reply, in this case the problem was with the Dialog Instance (Only SAP apps, not Oracle).
    We shutdown the instance with the Microsoft SAP Management Console (right  button -> Stop).
    In general to shutdown the SAP System we first:
    1. Shutdown The Dialog Instance. (SAP Management Console)
    2. Shutdown The Central Instance. (SAP Management Console)
    3. Shutdown Oracle (BR*Tools).
    4. Stop SAP and Oracle Services.
    Maybe is more a problem of Windows Memory Management.....

  • Why the photo app is not closing after i finish, when i take a picture accessing directly from home screen. the location is draining my battery if I'm not closing the app by double click home button. in iOS 6 was not like this

    When im taking a picture directly from home screen after im finished the application remain open. This app is ussing the location and if im not closing like other applications by doble click the home button the batery will finished fast. On the other IOS 5 and 6 was not neccesary to unblock the phone and bouble click the home bottom.

    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Hello all,
    Please take pity on a newbie and answer what I hope is a really simple script question. This is my first attempt at Apple Script.
    I have searched for a script that will eject (unmount) a disk upon shutdown, but haven't found anything on this board. Do you have a reference to an archived script or an example of such code?
    Background:
    I have a new FireWire drive (Western Digital MyBook). It is OSX compatible, but not well integrated. For example, it should power off when I shut down the computer. It does so, but only if I unmount it first. If you have a similar drive, I should note that this behavior began when I reformatted it to HFS+ (Journaled) from the OEM FAT32. I would like to autmate the un-mounting upon shut-down via an Apple Script.
    I am running OSX 10.3.9 on an E-Mac. As for my programming skills, I used to program in Fortran on both IBM and Unix mainframes, and do some basic Unix system administration tasks. So, I should be able to manage this scripting task if given the right advice.

    The issue isn't how to unmount the disk (that's the easy part), the problem is when to trigger it.
    There is no standard mechanism for launching a script at shutdown, so there's no way to tell your script to run prior to the shutdown.
    The best solution I can think of is a stay-open script that sits around doing nothing all day, until it quits. When it quits it unmounts the drive.
    Under normal circumstances you wouldn't quit the script at all - just leave it running, but when the OS tells it to quit as part of the normal shutdown process it does its thing.
    Here's one way of doing it:

    The 'run' handler is executed when the script is launched, but there's nothing we need to do there.
    The 'idle' handler is run periodically in the background - again, we don't need to do anything here, either. The return value tells AppleScript how long to wait before re-running the idle handler
    The 'quit' handler does the work - as soon as it's called it unmounts the drive, then continues with the normal quit process.
    Of course, there's no checking here to make sure you really are shutting down (vs. just quitting the script manually), so you might want to add some validation (prompt the user, maybe?). You'll notice I wrapped the eject command in a try block - that way it'll fail silently if the disk isn't mounted, otherwise it would post an error dialog "Can't get disk "diskName"".

    I've noticed that sometimes the JVMs are not closed by JWS or the app launched via JWS.
    Does something goes wrong with me or is it a real known problem ?

    Swing applications must call system.exit() explicitly to close dow the VM. Because Java Web Start turns non-swing apps into swing apps, it is possible that some applications that will
    properly shutdown when run stand-alone will not due so when run under java web start.
    To get around this allways call System.exit() explicitly.

  • SAP Gui Logon - application server shutdown

    Hi!
    I'have installed SAP Netweaver 7.0 Abap TRIAL on my Windows XP Service Pack 3.
    After lunching NSP-->Start Application Server, all is ok.
    But when i try to Logon with Sap Gui 7.10, i get this error :

  • My iPad doesn't seem to charge when plugged in to my MacBook Pro if the MBP goes to sleep. My iPhone continues to charge even if the MBP is closed. Is that normal?

    My iPad (3rd Gen) seems to stop charging if it is plugged into my MBP if either the iPad is closed or if the MBP goes to sleep. My iPhone charges whether the MBP is awake or asleep or even if the MBP is closed. There is a screen display that shows the iPhone is charging. The iPad only has the tiny icon at the top of the screen that show it is charging. However, the battery's % charged does not increase if the lid is closed when I am charging the iPad if the lid is closed on the iPad or if the iPad off after pressing the on off button. Is this normal?

    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
    Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

  • Cursors are not closed when using Ref Cursor Query in a report  ORA-01000

    Dear Experts
    Oracel database 11g,
    developer suite 10.1.2.0.2,
    application server 10.1.2.0.2,
    Windows xp platform
    For a long time, I'm hitting ORA-01000
    I have a 2 group report (master and detail) using Ref Cusor query, when this report is run, I found that it opens several cursors (should be only one cursor) for the detail query although it should not, I found that the number of these cursors is equal to the number of master records.
    Moreover, after the report is finished, these cursors are not closed, and they are increasing cumulatively each time I run the report, and finally the maximum number of open cursors is exceeded, and thus I get ORA-01000.
    I increased the open cursors parameter for the database to an unbeleivable value 30000, but of course it will be exceeded during the session because the cursors are increasing cumulatively.
    I Found that this problem is solved when using only one master Ref Cursor Query and create a breake group, the problem is solved also if we use SQL Query instead of Ref Query for the master and detail queries, but for some considerations, I should not use neither breake group nor SQL Query, I have to use REF Cursor queries.
    Is this an oracle bug , and how can I overcome ?
