MBP not shutting Down and Overheating

Related to my recent Yosemite Install???
2nd time this has happened in a week. While the app (Traktor) I was running sometimes takes a while to shut down, I swear I waited for the laptop to shut down before I closed the lid. but when I took it out an hour later, it was very hot to the touch and down to 45% battery. Strangely the time had reset to 12/?/2000. Last week same thing same circumstance
Any suggestions appreciated
Mid 2009  2.8 intel core 2 4gb

Try resetting the SMC. I suggest this as it seems that you are booting into some sort of firmware (like open firmware). Back in the day of G4s and G3s chipsets (I am a NEWBIE to the Intel based machines... so take what I have to offer with a grain of salt) reseting the PRAM was one way of addressing this issue (or using Open firmware commands... init-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all... etc).
Maybe one of the folks with more experience with MBs will be along.

The battery lights and the magsafe light still work but the screen doesn't respond, i have to shut down the computer and only after a couple of tries to turn it on i the screen wakes up. Also, sometimes when i turn it on the screen gets fragmented, like in the image. Does anyone have any solution? thanks.

I-PHONE 4 FROZE AFTER AN UPDATE, WILL NOT SHUT DOWN AND SENDS ALL CALLS TO VOICEMAIL, IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO?

Unplug it and let unit go dead. Then hold your Home button down and plug the USB power cord back in. iTunes should see it and then restore.

Hi. I recently discovered my iMac not shutting down and stalls. Everything seems to disappear except my wallpaper. If I Then go to setting on my Dock the apple sign at the top appears for me to shutdown the second time. I asked one technician’s what might be the problem. He said that maybe it is Flash Player that runs in the background and avoid the computer to shutdown. I uninstalled Flash Player and the problem was fixed. Now I can’t watch any YouTube videos. Is there something else I can do to use Flash Player again to avoid the shutdown problem?

If YouTube is your only worry, you could instruct it to use HTML5 in stead of Flash:https://www.youtube.com/html5
Be advised though that Flash is used for other web stuff too.

Macbook Pro will not shut down. Not using the POWER button, not using control/alt/command/esc, not using force quit, and obviously not by selecting Sleep or Shut down from the Apple menu.
Force quit will not even pop up when selected.
Top row keys do not work either, have gone into settings and switched them to F keys and back again, no luck.

  • SBO is not shutting down and MenuEvent getting fired repeatedly

    Hi,
I have written an addon which has a event filter for et_MENU_CLICK.
I am having problem when i close SBO. The application MenuEvent is getting fired repeatedly and SBO and my addon does not shut down.
I am using SBO 2004B and my addon is written in VB6.
    Following is my Application AppEvent
    If EventType = aet_ShutDown Then
            End 'shut down
    ElseIf EventType = aet_CompanyChanged Then
            End
    ElseIf EventType = aet_ServerTerminition Then
            End 'shut down
    End If
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Satish.

If you specify an event filter for only the menu event, the UI Api will not be able to respond to any of the other events you have written in code. Try adding the application events to your event filter or remove the event filtering all together.
In my experience the filtering can be a painful process especially in bigger projects.

  • HT4528 My iPhone 4s will not shut down and wont play sound on you tube

My iPhone 4s is experiencing two issues.
    1.  it will not shut down, restarts on its own after a few seconds,
    2. and it loses sound on videos and apps intermittently - even when sound on apps comes back, there is no sound on any you tube videos
I have tried hard reset, software upgrade, and various setting changes I read about in a thread online for the sounds issue, nothing has worked.

We tried the home sleep button several times with the same, that is, no result.
The thing with the WiFi apparently is not that uncommon a problem as the Apple web site mentionen the method I described to remedy the problem.  Again, it did not fix the issue.
Thanks for the reply but ee still are at sea.

  • MBP not shutting down or restarting

    Hello guys!
A few days ago, I came across a strange problem on my macbook pro: I wasn’t able to log out, restart or shut down using the apple menu, nor using the power button, which just won't respond.
When I try to restart, nothing just happens. No spinning wheel, nothing. The only way to restart is to use sudo reboot in the Terminal.
This problem started short after I installed a program called “FontForge”, but uninstalling it didn’t help, nor did recovering the system from an older Time Machine backup (from the time before I installed the FontForge).
Finaly I thought it could be something about the SMC and I reseted both it and the PRAM, but without any success. Then I did a re-installation of Mac OS X Lion using Lion recovery, but still no difference and now I’m beginning to feel quite clueless.
Although the problem isn’t life-threatening, it’s very annoying and I’d really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
(Just so you know, I’m running Mac OS X 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro 13” mid 2010)

There could be a couple of things going on here. First, I would start the cpu in recovery mode (cmd+R). Select disk utility and repair disk as well as repair permissions. After, I would start up in safe mode (hold shift) and then remove user library cache and sys library cache folders. Restart CPU, if should now shut down and restart without a hitch.

  • 2007 A1226 Macbook Pro: Fans out of control, will not shut down, and temp sensors have gone offline.

So my MBP, just an hour or so ago, failed to shut down.  I click Apple->Shut down, but the computer instead restarts and while loading OS X, gives me an error that says "You restarted your computer because of an error."  The fans are maxed out right now, there is -no- process causing thisl  Also, I use iStatMenus to monitor my temperatures, and all of the CPU sensors have gone offline, iStat is only reporting temps for the hard drive and battery.
iStat also seems to have lost the ability to control my fan speeds.  Uninstalling and reinstalling iStat did nothing.  Resetting PRAM and the SMC have done nothing either.  Any ideas?

  • DELL Inspiron N5110 does not Shut Down and does not wake up from Sleep

    Hello.
I have Dell Inspiron N5110 which cannot shut down neither in Windows 7 nor in Ubuntu Linux. I specifically booted Ubuntu Live from the CD to eliminate the possibility that  the problem is in the Windows 7. Shutdown in Ubuntu does not work either. This proves that the reason in not a BACKGROUND application in Windows that remains hanging and does not allow the laptop to shut down.
The laptop cannot wake up after Sleep or Hibernate either.
I have tried every solution that you advised to all the other people in the forum that have the same issue.
    1. The laptop cannot shut down in Safe Mode either.
    2. It cannot shut down even after Clean Boot Mode - all non-MS services disabled and all Startups disabled.
    3. I tried changing the Advanced Power Options of "Allow Hybrid Sleep" - both ON for "On AC Power" and "Running on battery" - no change.
    4. I tried installing the latest video drivers for Nvidia. This did not help either.
    5. Running only on battery does not change anything - still cannot shutdown.
    6. Running only on AC adapter without battery - still cannot shutdown.
    7. I tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the POWER button for 30 seconds to RESET the laptop - did not work.
ATTENTION: I've been reading your forums all day and saw at least 10-15 reports of the same problem and not a single fixed case.
    8. This is why I have not tried Flashing the BIOS to the latest version - I read other people tried that and it didn't work either.
    9. I loaded BIOS default settings (F9) - still cannot shutdown.
REMARK: Changing something in the BIOS and trying to Exit once caused the laptop to freeze and I had to Power Off by holding the button for longer.
    10. I ran DELL Diagnostics from Boot menu (F12 at startup) - no errors found.
    11. I could not locate IEEE 1394 Adapter in Device Manager to change its Power Management settings.
Actually none of the suggestions you may give for changing something in Windows makes sense because I already mentioned that shut down in Ubuntu does not work either.
The issue seems to be either in the BIOS or a hardware problem. But which component? Is it the CD/DVD drive?
    This is a new laptop.
Please advice how to proceed. If you know which component fails please tell me.

Remove the keyboard and palm rest (guide from dell shows you how) and you should see a small coin cell battery. Remove it for at least 10 seconds, then put it back in. Enter BIOS and make sure there isn't anything weird that was changed. It should work properly now. I have had this working in Ubuntu 12.04 for the last few days, with no problems.

  • When unplugged my MBP randomly shuts down and won't start up again

When my MBP is unplugged it randomly shuts off and won't restart. To get it to boot up again I have to plug it in.
Today I was using my computer for about 15 minutes unplugged and it just shut down by itself. I was right in the middle of typing something and it just cut out. The other weird thing is I don't get a low battery warning, nothing, it just shuts down.
Then I press the power button to restart and I get nothing. Even when I pull the battery out and put it back in nothing. I pressed the battery level button and it blinked rapidly on the lowest 2 lights. Keep in mind I was using my computer unplugged for only 15 minutes immediately after unplugging it from the wall after it had been charing for 15+ hours.
This makes no sense. Please help me.
    -Jacob

Sounds like a bad battery and/or problem with the PMU (power management unit) and/or memory.
"Half the start up sound" is a bad sign as it means it's failing the normal start up tests (I'd guess a Memory problem)
Reset the PMU and run the Hardware tests from Install DVD1 (hold down d at startup) and see what it reports.

  • When i am in certain apps, some with using internet and some not, shuts down and goes back to the main page.  how do i fix this or what is the problem?

My ipad just started blanking out in certain apps, such as the NY post or certain games.  When i try to flip a page in the NY Post the ipad blanks out and goes back to the originial screen.  The same thing happens with some games.  Does anyone know what is wrong or how to fix this?

Try resetting your iPad.  Press and hold sleep button until slider shows up on screen.  Shut down then start it up again.

  • MBP abruptly shut down and will not turn on unless it is plugged in

    Hey everyone,
I was using my Mac tonight off the battery tonight when it suddenly shut off when at about 50% power. I tried to turn it back on but it claimed that it held no charge. When I plugged it in, it turned on, but is listing as not charging. The second I unplug the adaptor, it shuts off, even though it currently says it's at 51% power.
This Macbook is only 3 weeks old purchased new.
I tried the SMC (I believe that's what it's referred to) but I got nothing.
System profiler says this about the battery:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 2764
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5454
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 18
    Condition: Normal
Any ideas what it could be? There are no apple stores in my location and it was purchased at futureshop and they provided me with a free warranty, should I take it to them or contact Apple?
As it is less than a month old I'm rather upset.

If Futureshop is an authorized Apple reseller and service provider, then yes, take it back there for evaluation. If not, call AppleCare at 1-800-275-2273, assuming you're in the USA. You still have free phone support, and of course your machine is under warranty.
