MBP not starting up past loading apple

I was just about to finish up on my Macbook Pro the other night when it prompted me to reinstall software updates, and after wavering it for a little while I decided it might be a decent idea to finally do it. After about Five minutes of waiting wearily and the updates not progressing as fast as I wanted it to, I shut the lid and went to bed.
When I woke in the morning to check my emails before work, I was confronted by the problem of my MBP not starting up beyond the Apple with the loading thing underneath. I've tried resetting P-RAM, put the install disc in and starting up holding Option, and also holding C.
I can't really think of anything else and it's a hard task for me to take my laptop into town with the monsoon we've been having lately.
Any suggestions?
Help is much appreciated,
Peace.

Not the brightest thing to do while the computer is updating. What did you think would happen? You could have just let it run and gone to bed. Not knowing which updates you are referring to I would hesitate to guess that you now have directory issues or worse. So, your options are:
1. Run Repair Disk from Disk Utility while booted from your installer disk. If it won't repair the disk;
2. Use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory. If that wn't do it;
3. Do an Erase & Install of the OS.

  • Macbook death sentence?? aka will not start up past the apple

ok, so this has been going on for a couple of weeks so i'm not really all that surprised that my computer will not turn on. it all started when i got the rectangle box of death that told me to hold the power button down until it shut off. it started up right after i did this however my macbook was never the same..
ever since it has taken quite a while for it to start up. when i turn the computer on it makes that wonderful noise and goes to the white screen with the apple on it. it stays there (like it's frozen) until you physically bump the computer. when this happens, the screen cuts to black and it tries again. the wonderful noise happens again and the apple appears... and it freezes again until you bump it. this usually goes on for about 4-5 "resets" until i get the loading spin wheel and then i'm home free. everything works fine.
however, now i come to my macbook tonight after about 20-25 times of "resetting" it, there is no loading wheel and alas my macbook will not start up... is my hard drive dead? is my start up disk bad? (ps i recently took my mac into the mac store and the put a new key pad on it and also showed me how to replace my hard drive, meaning they took it out and put it back in... i think this started happening just after they did this... would this have contributed in any way?)

wellll i got a new hard drive about a 18 months ago... so i feel like it should last a little longer (my first lasted over 2 years).
It certainly should last longer than that. Sometimes people complain that I always assume the hard drive is dying. In your case, it sure sounds like it. In my defense, hard drives are relatively cheap and (in most cases) easy to swap out. If it is the hard drive, you should notice the difference right away with a new one. However, at 18 months, there are other things that should be tried first.
if indeed it is dying, that's alright, i just need to get a new one. i was just concerned that it might be the start up disk or something like that since it has trouble starting the system...
It could be something else. Your kernel panic could have corrupted the file system. Make sure you have a good backup of your data. Restart the machine using the DVD install disk. Hold down the "C" key to force a boot from the optical drive. When it comes up, run Disk Utility and repair the disk. Repeat until it says there is nothing to repair. Then restart it from the hard drive. Run Disk Utility again and repair permissions. See how it runs now.
If it acts up again, there is one more thing to try. Make sure you have a good backup of your data. Restart the machine using the DVD install disk. Hold down the "C" key to force a boot from the optical drive. When it comes up, run Disk Utility and partition the hard drive. Just pick 1 partition GUID option, default HFS+ (journaled) file system. Reinstall the OS. In my experience, if the reinstall locks up or takes more than an hour, the drive is dead. If it installs normally, restore your documents and start using it again. Slowly reinstall your applications. If one of your applications is causing the problem, you are more likely to notice it if you don't install them all at once.
    Good luck!

  • Ipod Touch 1st Gen not starting up past the apple logo

When I start it up i see the apple logo for about 15sec then it turns off. I've tried putting it into safe mode by holding the Power and Home button for 30sec but all it does is turn on and off twice then nothing happens.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • HT201412 iPad will not start-up past initial Apple symbol

    Need Help...what to do.?
iPad worked fine this morning, but this evening not working.  When I start it, I see the apple picture, then it goes blank.  Then the apple comes on again, then blank.  The the apply comes on again, and again, and again.
Tried and failed to make it talk with iMac or iTunes.
Lost without my iPad.  Help with a clue how to handle?
    Pappy 1957

If the reset doesn't work, try and force iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • IBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo

iBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo. So I have zeroed out the hard drive and reinstalled tiger. No change except if I start up holding shift it will boot and welcome comes up then black screen that says you must restart by holding down power key.
Zeroed out the HD again with same results. Also I have a iBook G3 with the same symptoms.

What you are experiencing is a kernel panic.
Try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

i have erased my all phone contact list and then the message comes that it will be deleted with in an hour. but now my phone is not starting and only the apple logo appears on the screen. what should i do now..!

That number is for an apple server in the UK that is used for iMessage activation.  A hidden SMS is snet to that number when you turn iMessage on and is used to verify your phone number.  I suggest you turn iMessage off.  In settings/phone turn on dial assist.  Check with your carrier to see if you can send an international SMS as you end that possibility to activate iMessage.  Rest your phone (Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).) then turn iMessage back on.

  • It will not start! just the apple icon and the twirl around

ok we turned it off and unplugged it. It was taking forever to load any page or programme. now turning it back on it has not gone past the apple....

Same here. Mac Pro 1,1. I currently unplugged all 3 Seagate Barracuda (3TB) drives and can at least boot from my OCZ SSD. No idea where this comes from, it started intermittendly for 3 days now, but today: No boot with the barracudas in it. (They're not the system disks).

  • OSX will not start up after loading iTunes 5

Just down loaded and installed iTunes 5. OS 10.4 will not start, it hangs at the apple logo. Any suggestions?

Try booting into Single User Mode and run the File System Check. Then, if you can successfully boot up, run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions right away.
    FSCK - File System Check
To start up in single-user mode
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (Apple) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.
When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.
How to Run the File System Check from the Command Line
Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
    1. At the prompt, type: fsck -fy (NOTE, there is a space between the k and the “-”)
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume <name of volume> appears to be OK."
If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
**** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
IMPORTANT: If this message appears, repeat the "fsck -fy" command until this message no longer appears. It is not unusual for your computer to require several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional errors. Run it until you get two consecutive times with an "OK" result.
    3. When fsck reports that no problems were found, type: reboot
    4. Press Return.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

my macair11 will not start. White background, an apple and a turning sun showing that it is on. But nothing more happens. What sall I do?

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Read before proceeding >   OS X: About OS X Recovery
If it were a RAM (memory) issue, you would hear beeps instead of the startup chime.
