MBP & operation in high temperatures

I'm looking to purchase the MBP before my upcoming deployment to Iraq and I was wondering if the high temperatures, climate, and environment in general would hurt the machine. Thanks!

elgato, I've carried PowerBooks all over Egypt. Made some brief jaunts into desert areas.
Sand was my biggest concern. I kept the PowerBook in a tied plastic garbage bag most of the time (and kept some spare garbage bags in my carry bag). Same with my camera gear. Didn't have any problems with the equipment. A friend didn't protect his SLR film camera that way and changed lenses several times in dusty conditions. That camera was never the same again.
I tried to minimize the use time in very hot environments, like 54 C one time(but to be honest I wasn't much interested in using the computer in that heat).
Fortunately, I was able to work with the computer and photo and video processing in air conditioned hotel rooms or on air conditioned Nile cruise boats. Your experience may vary.
Good luck and stay well.

  • Mbp late 2014 very high temperature at internet videos

    Hello,
I bought an MacBook Pro 13" about 3 weeks ago. After some time, I noticed that the Macbook got very hot while watching videos online. I installed "Istat menu" for reading the temperature sensor's values. When i watch videos online (e.g youtube/facebook) the temperature goes up to about 90°C in only a few seconds-a minute. Since you can track apps with higher energy consumptions in yosemite (10.10.1) i looked into the activity monitor and it said the webbrowser (tested with safari and chrome) consumed up to +300 units. If i set the fan to turn on max RPM and hold the MB completely up, i get the temperature down to about 60°C, until i close the youtube/facebook tab completely. Amazon prime video in 1080p works without getting hot at all, even when the Macbook rests on a blanket. Sometimes even spotify (not even playing music, just running in the background) causes high temperatures, but AutoCAD and other programs work "regularly", without the MBP getting hot..
That circumstances really disturb the useability, because almost cant watch videos at all!
I ran the "Apple hardware test" (pressing "D" while startup), which did not give any problems/errors.
Is this a Yosemite problem or a hardware problem?
    sincerely ttopueth.

Neither.  Some videos will produce temperature in the 90°c range.  That actually is 'normal' and is not dangerous to your MBP.  There are thermal shutdown provisions that will prevent the MBP from committing Hari Kari.  If you wish, get a cooling pad to lower the temperature a touch.
    Ciao.

  • Battery is operating at a high temperature

ctually it is getting v.hot when i'm charging the new battry

Operating System - Windows 7Error Message - Battery is operating at a high temperature And is not charging. I bought a new Battery for  Hp Pavilion dv5 - 1104TU notebook from Hp authorised seller and when i used it, i got a error msg saying that the Battery is operating at a high temperature and is not charging. I'm facing this issue whenever i try to Charge the battery (from the newly purchased battery right from Day 1). Since the battery is not getting charged, my laptop shuts down.I used one more HP battery and i tested with my laptop, for which i'm not facing this issue. I contacted Hp service centre, they tested my Laptop for "Heat sink test" and it passed and they told there is no problem with my laptop.I also gave my battery for checking, they said there is problem with the battery. Then i contacted my seller and he said that if they get a written statement from the service centre, they'll replace the battery. I asked Hp service centre to give me a written statement. But the Hp service centre people initially refused even after repeated calls.  Then i went in person and asked for a statement, they sent a mail to me as " Laptop is showing plug in not charging only after 2 hours, but it’s not a technical defect & it’s a key feature of this battery". They included seller email in the mail .I dont understand why they included seller email id when the compliant is raised by me.
Moreover I m still facing the same issue. Can anyone help me to get solution for this ?Is there any grievance cell for HP service center / dealer.I have a hope that HP being a pioneer company will look into this issue and sort my problemThanks in advance,KMSP

  • Mbp normal variance in temperatures?

My Macbook pro (core duo 1.86ghz) has always been extremely hot to touch, but I never thought twice about it. About a week ago I installed coreduotemp to monitor the temperatures and noticed that it reaches 96c when the processor is under load (no 3d graphics, laptop on a wooden table in a cool air conditioned room). Some parts of the notebooks cover get so hot that when a workmate accidentally touched it he screamed.
Since we have a lot of Macbook pro's where I work, I took an identical (apart from a 2.16ghz processor) model and did a profile transfer to it. When both notebooks where under load the difference in temperature was was over over 30c (64c vs 96c)! There is also a huge difference in how hot the cover of the notebook gets. The new one gets hot too, but never so hot that you can't touch it.
I called our local retailers support service, and they said they have no guidelines regarding the issue, and can not take it in for repairs.
I found this pretty surprising, so I downloaded a 3d game (sourbraten or something like that) and tried running it so that there was some processor load on the background. The screen came full of black distortion within a few minutes.
I called Apples support, and they said there must be something wrong with the video card, and the laptop should be sent for repair...
As an engineer working with servers for a living, I find this pretty funny. The support person didn't find anything strange in the fact that one of the notebooks is running at about 80% higher temperature over ambient, he actually said that "temperatures around 100c are fully normal for a notebook". I understand quality control will have some margin in a matter like this, but the difference is just huge!
The main reason I'm still wondering about this despite my mbp being accepted for repair is that we have almost 100 Apple notebooks for our workers, and there are a lot of other employees complaining about the heat. It seems most of the ones complaining received their notebooks in the same batch as me. Do we have to try to get corruption on all of them before extreme temperatures are regarded to be non-normal?

Hi, and thanks for all the answers!
A funny thing happened before I left work. We received a box full of silly gifts from Intel, including a usb coffeecup heater. Well the heater really works, it keeps your coffee hot until you drink it (mine was really hot for over 20 minutes)!
What's even funnier is that the notebook under load was about as hot as the coffeecup heater...
The notebook, and the one I compared it to where both updated with the latest firmware, and all automatically available operating system updates.
I'm an IT engineer, mainly maintaining fairly high end servers. I have however toyed and built computers for well over 10 years, and have quite a bit of experience with them. For example having two fully identical computers next to each other with the same configuration and running 100% load on each should result in almost the same processor temperature. In this case the cooler computer had a faster processor which should actually mean it runs slightly hotter (though speed actually does not have a huge impact on processor temperature comparing to voltage).
So what could cause the differance in temperature? There are really only a few possibilities:
    - The hotter ones processor does not get good contact with the cooler
    - The hotter ones fan(s) is not running as fast to remove air from the case
    - A fan is broken in the hotter notebook
There are small variances in heat output between identical processors, but the differance would only be a few degrees.
I can hear the fans in both computers when they are under load. The hotter ones fan is actually running at a clearly faster speed then the cooler ones. The only logical explanation is that the heatsink does not have good contact with the processor. Due to this it can't really dissipate the heat however fast it spins the fan, and the processor remains hot. This does not explain why the case is so much hotter too... :O
I read the link you have regarding Apples guidance to temperature, but they are not actually saying ANYTHING in that article. Actually they say more in the detailed specs page you can get on the notebook on apple.com (sales). There they mention what the ambient temperature for operation can be.
Now when I called Apples support, I was told it is fully normal for a macbook pro's processor to operate at 100c. However according to Intels specifications 100c is the maximum temperature the processor is allowed to reach under any condition (this is the highest max temp on any processor I have heard of by the way). So what apple is basically saying, is that it's perfectly normal for my processor to run hotter then Intels highest allowed temperature? To add to this my ambient temperature while testing was 21c (14c under the maximum temperature allowed for operation). So what would happen if the ambient temperature went up to 35 (which is not even an especially high temperature...)? The processors temperature would most probably raise to over 110C!
Just like Intel has a maximum operating temperature for it's processors, hardisk manufacturers have a maximum temperature for their hardisks operation. Having a case too hot to touch does not make me feel very confident that the hardisk is operating under a temperature within the manufacturers limits.
But still Apple believes this is ok untill your notebook get's so hot that everything on the display becomes corrupted! Also their page concerning the macbook pro's operating temperature does nothing else then try to convince you that it's normal that your notebook burns you!
Really makes me happy I got applecare
    edit:
btw, thanks for the info on the hardware test. Unfortunately I already packed the notebook for repairs, so I can't try it. Will defiantly remember it for next time though!

  • Poor battery life and high temperatures on MacBook Pro Retina 15"

I'm having never-ending problems with poor battery life and high temperatures on a MacBook Pro Retina 15"
I took it in for service and they told me it needed a new logic board and replaced it.  When I asked why they were vague about the reasons, they said "it just needed one, it failed some test".  I now have the computer back and it runs the same way it always did.  I bought this laptop because it was supposedly capable of high end video editing in 1080P (or so Apple's website claims) and also photo editing.
"The processor, graphics, all-flash architecture, memory, and display in the 15-inch MacBook Pro give you unprecedented mobile video editing capabilities. Super-responsive flash storage delivers up to nine streams of 1080p ProRes (HQ) content for multicam editing in Final Cut Pro X,3 while the latest quad-core processors on the 15-inch MacBook Pro decode multiple streams of video, and a powerful GPU renders millions of pixels onto the screen. With flash storage that offers up to four times the performance of a traditional hard drive,1 you can even edit four streams of uncompressed 8-bit 1080p HD video, right from the internal storage on your 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.4"
However, when I'm just browsing the web and emailing it runs quite warm and battery life is quite poor.  Sometimes doing those same activities I would say it gets so warm it's almost uncomfortable to have on your lap and the fans are running fast enough to become noticably noisy.  I'm also driving only one screen at and a time and I heard that the MacBook Pro can supposedly do three screens.
If actually try to do something like video editing with final cut pro the laptop gets really hot, the fans are on full blast and battery life drops to only an hour or two.  I think when I rendered just a 3 or 4 minute clip once I got less than hour of battery life.  I will have to time again.
Anyway most people (including the sales guys) are telling me no way this is not normal.  When I play with demos in the store browsing the web they are not getting warm or hot to the touch.  My friend's 2013 MacBook Air is also NOT getting warm to the touch doing the same activities.
I installed iStat Pro so I could check the temperature and fan speeds.  I'm seeing temperatures of 70+ on the GPU, 85+ on the GPU diode and 65+ on the CPU heatsink along with elvated fan speeds above 5K which becomes noticeably noisy.  I understand that might be normal for the most processor intensive tasks but it really doesn't seem right for just light web browsing and e-mailing.  (I also may have viber and skype open but that shouldn't matter).  CPU usage is usually running between 2-10% as this is all happening to.
    Furthermore, straight from the specs:
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and  automatic graphics switching
I am assume "GPU" and "GPU diode" are temp measurements on the discrenete NVIDIA video card, especially since MacBook Airs from the same and newer generatio do not have this reading.  Since Apple Claims the graphics "automatically switches" it seems all the harder to believe the GPU is reaching 85+ when in theory it shouldn't even be activated.  I mean, shouldn't the INtel HD Graphics 4000 be capable of simple web browsing and e-mailing?  Especially with only one screen activated (be it it the internal or an external)?
What should I do here?  When I asked the repair guys "OK well what is the normal operating temp range for the various sensors" they said "Sorry Apple doesn't provide that info".

    Yes I have.
Just web browsing and basically doing nothing I'm hear a lot of aduible fans, I'm getting 85C+ on GPU diode, 65+ on cpu heatsink.  I since installed anohter program that shows me not just the CPU heatsink but the cores and the cores are at 90C+.
Seems like a lot of heat for doing nothing.  Not only that but I have these problems with no external monitor while on battery power too.
I don't know what to do.  They already replaced the logic board.  Others seem to get advertised battery life out of Apple products and not have products that get **** near hot enough to burn you while just web browsing or watching a movie let alone advertised tasks like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2012) reaches quite high temperatures. Is this normal?

I'm currently using a mid 2012 Macbook Pro with the 15" high resolution screen add-on (it's the model that was released alongside the new retina versions). The processor is a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7.
I've seen a lot of claims about MacBooks running at high temperatures, but I've hardly seen numbers as high as mine. I've had my MacBook reach 100 °C (212 °F) up to 105 °C (221 °F) in some situations (such as when compiling software). I've seen 105 °C being reported as a critical temperature at which the system might decide to shut down to protect itself, so I'm worried that this might be an unnatural temperature and that it might be affecting the lifespan of my PC.
I've also experienced cases where, while being on charge but idle (or running non-intensive tasks such as text editing or watching non-HD videos), the PC would at some point begin spinning the fans to very high speeds and reaching temperatures between 85 °C (185 °F) and 95 °C (203 °F). The aluminum body of the computer gets very hot (especially near the hinge where the screen is attached) and in some cases my fingers can feel the unconfortable temperature even when just typing on the keys. I should note that this is happening during the summer, during which the temperatures outside float around 32 °C (89 °F), but I'm still worried it could keep happening later on during the year.
My warranty is expiring in a month so I'm wondering whether I should get my pc checked before it's over.
What do you think about these temperatures? Is there anything I should worry about? Should I contact Apple?

You can ship your MBP for examination and servicing by contacting Apple, but you will be without the MBP for a period of time.  First determine you warranty status:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
Create a time line of MUST dates for shipping and/or a trip to an Apple store.
In the interim, lets see if we can do something positive.  In addition to what I suggested earlier, run an Apple Hardware test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
You may have to use OPTION D to start it.
    Ciao.

  • High temperature problems with macbook pro 13"

    hello all
it is my first macbook pro i am new on macOS, i i bought it since 5 months at Appel store
    MacBook Pro
    Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014
Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris 1536 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
however i remark when i play on Facebook game like criminal case or show video on youtube it seems that my laptop gets high temperature and my battery runs out quickly,  is it normal behaviour ? i need advise there are any application can show me what internal temperature of my laptop ? what can i do to resolve this situation

    is it normal behaviour ?
Yes. Videos are processor-intensive actions, and gaming is even more so.
There is nothing you need to do, other than provide adequate air circulation so that the MBP can dissipate heat properly. The aluminum case is specifically designed to do that, so it's normal for it to feel quite warm. Don't use cases or "skins" because they will impede heat dissipation, and don't be tempted to install some clever hack to make its exhaust fan run faster. That will just draw more needless dust inside.
If the MBP gets too hot it will reduce its processor load automatically, and if that fails to reduce its temperature it will simply shut down on its own.
You should consider upgrading to Yosemite. It's completely subjective but all my portable Macs seem to run cooler with Yosemite than they did with Mavericks. Their battery life is much greater though. That's not subjective, I measured it. If the battery life is greater they are almost certainly running cooler.
Back up your Mac prior to upgrading OS X, as a precaution against the unexpected. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

  • IMac has high temperatures at all times

My iMac has high temperatures at all times lately. I realized this after it began randomly freezing, and so I installed iStat Pro and saw the temperatures seemed higher than usual.
Here they are (all temperatures are in Celsius degrees):
    HD: 53
    CPU: 52
    Ambient: 30
    GPU Diode: 71
    GPU Heatsink: 66
    Mem Controller: 60
    Optical Drive: 52
    Power supply 2: 75
    Fan speeds:
    Optical drive: 1110 rpm
    Hard drive: 1100 rpm
    CPU fan: 1421 rpm
I imagine these are quite a bit on the high side? These are also pretty constant, meaning even when I've just got iTunes and Firefox open (as I do now), these are the values that I get.
Anything I can do about this? I assume that AppleCare wouldn't do much about this unless something dies inside my computer, such as the fans failing or something?

I think the HD and CPU temps are running a TAD high, IMO.
The iMac's fans don't ramp up fast enough to keep both the HD and CPU cool enough.
I like to see both the HD and CPU temps below 50 degrees C during semi-normal operations.
I think iMac's run too warm/hot causing a " slow roasting" of various internal components over not so long a time.
If you are worried like I do, you can install an iMac fan control app called SMC Fan Control.
This little app will allow you ramp up the iMac's minimum fan speeds to a faster rpm than what Apple has set the default minimum rpm speed to be.
You want to use and set the fan speed conservatively to prevent premature burn up of the fan motors and to minimize sucking in additional dust, dirt and lint into your iMac.
When using this app create a new default user setting and set the fans rpm speeds to between 200-600 rpm higher/faster than the Apple default speeds. My recommendation is not to run the fans over 2000 rpm.
If both the HD and CPU still run at a higher temp., you can try a slightly higher settings for these between 1600 to 1800 rpm.
These settings keep the iMac and the fans relatively quiet, minimizing the amount of extra dust, dirt and lint into your iMac and allow these components to run at a more acceptable or tolerable temperature.
Another thing that can help with the heat buildup.
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
Also, it wouldn't hurt to run a small fan behind the iMac blowing on the back panel of the iMac.
    I do this, as well.
    Good luck!

  • Is the device safe as long as there is no high temperature screen?

Sometimes I use the phone in hot environment, a bit worried if the heat could damage internal components.
So how good is iPhone's self protection against high temperature? Can I say that the device is safe as long as I don't see a high temperature warning screen?
If the heat comes from outside, the screen and metallic chassis should have some ability to dissipate the heat and shield it away from internal parts right?
Thanks for your answers in advance!

    This is the specs:
    Environmental Requirements
    Operating ambient temperature:32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
    Nonoperating temperature:-4° to 113° F (-20° to 45° C)
    Relative humidity:5% to 95% noncondensing
    Operating altitude:tested up to 10,000 feet (3000 m)

  • Macbook High Temperature

I'm currently using a Macbook Core Duo 1.83GHz.
Do any one having problem with the high temperature.
I have recently install the software istat pro to measure the Temperature and realise the temperature can goes up to 75-80 degree celsius when I'm using the DVD with Itune.
This doesn't seems normal, and is this the problem of the Fan?
    Thanks

Actually that's quite normal when the CPU is under heavy use. The average range of operating temperature is 45-85ºC depending upon processor usage.
The fan is variable speed and increases in speed as the core temperature rises to maintain adequate cooling.
Older MBs such as yours should have the SMC Firmware Update installed. This update will increase the idle speed of the fan to improve cooling at lower CPU usage levels.
You can also install third-party software that provides direct user control over the fan's idle speed. Try Fan Control or smcFan Control - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Satellite P300D-10V - Turn off by high temperature

    Hi!
I have a TOSHIBA Satellite P300D-10V and I have a problem with overheating! When I load my CPU with 2,2 GHz for a long time, it turn off by high temperature!
What must be my solution about this problem?
"Normal" temperature for my laptop is around 70 - 75 degrees cslsius! Is it normal for this CPU?
I have used another laptop with Intel CPU and there is no such problem! My Toshiba is in use for 2 years! OS Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
    REGARDS!

    Hi alexander79,
First of all you should know that cleaning the fan is not covered by warranty!!! Of course you can do this from an authorized service provider but for this service you have to pay, its not free!
More detailed instructions you can find in this how to article from Toshiba:
[How to clean the cooling system of a Toshiba notebook? |http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=40]
As you can read, the notebook should be cleaned every 3-4 months and believe me, you will be very surprised how much dust come out ;)
Last but not least its also important that you only use display drivers from Toshiba.
I had also a problem with overheating and this was caused due a wrong display driver (I used the drivers from nVidia page). They are not pretested and dont have an overheat protection The result was overheating and turning off.
After installation of Toshiba display driver the problem was solved.

  • High temperature after suspend to RAM with linux-3.9.2-1.

After the update to linux-3.9.2-1 my laptop works on higher temperature after resuming from suspend to RAM. Works fine with linux 3.8.7-1.
Normal working temperature is 47~49 degrees Celsius and after resuming it is 59~61. It's not just a false temperature reading. I can actually feel the laptop warmer, and the CPU fun spins up.
I can't see any CPU high load. I tend to believe that the temperature rise has to do with the Intel GPU driver (i915). My CPU has an integrated GPU.
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    cmdline:
    i915.semaphores=1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 aspm_force=true acpi_backlight=vendor intel_pstate=disable
    Anyone noticed something similar?
Ways to debug it? Apart from kernel GIT bisect.

I got the impression myself, that all the i915 downclock tweaks have been getting counterproductive over time as the driver got better.
Be sure to give the new pstate another go. I had problems too with the upgrade to 3.9.x and the powersave governor. Enabling "performance" in cpupower only and letting intel_pstate manage the idling on its own had an awesome effect. I only have rc6=1 and "sna" accel along with it on a similar cpu. Resuming with fan off.

  • Iphone 3Gs high temperature and low batterie performance

    Hello,
This is my first question here, so I'm sorry if I doing something wrong.
About a week ago my iPhone 3Gs is demonstrating very high temperature, at any location (inside my pocket, over my desk e etc...) and situation (it happens even in airplane mode), not enough to a overheat warning dough. And his battery dies in about 1 hour, no matter what I do. I've done a recovery and its came back to normal for 2 days, but after that the heat and battery problem has returned.
    Could any body help me?

    xboxbmliphone wrote:
... I would just run the phone for a couple days without any apps, music, vids, just to make sure it still is working ok...
    Recommended!
Hot phone and battery drain, cause of both together, is some hardware defect as a micro short-circuit (the phone dropped in water, as example) or an app who have a bug who let it eat all the energy (keep on localization services, as example).
Let the phone hard reboot, too, to remove any crazy process left in.
If you still have the issue with nothing running on (please make sure really nothing is on, neither background apps or itunes songs or anything else), most likely is hardware defect and you need service, as pointed above.

  • GTX 560Ti Hawk high temperature and noise

First of all I want to say "Hi" because this is my first post here!
Second, I have problems with my GTX 560Ti Hawk! The problems are high temperature and very loud fans! I bought this card less than a month ago and it didn't work properly from the first day but I wanted to give it a chance so I kept it for a while so I could monitor symptoms. I haven't even tried to OC it. I monitored it the way it came from the box.
In idle card doesn't go over 40°C which is fine by me considering the weather but when I play games it goes all the way to 85°C and it's loud as jet taking off! It's is pretty much intolerable to be near this card when playing games! This product is advertised to be very cold and very silent but now that isn't the case. What bothers me most is that the card was running on open bench table which has very good air cooling ( I made it myself and decreased ~10°C compared to my case). That means that my Hawk would have burned if tested inside the case, or it would fly away!! :D
Everything is good until card hits 76°C - that's tolerable temperature and the card is still silent, but when it hits 76°C and goes up, all hell breaks loose!
Card doesn't crash and it runs perfectly (got performance increase ~30% from my GTX 460) but way higher temperatures and noise above advertised makes me wanting to crash it with a sledgehammer! :D
I RMA it today and waiting for answer which should arrive in two weeks tops (quick when taking money but very slow when support is needed)
I wanted to ask if RMA is even possible when card isn't crashing??? I RMA cards with similar problems before with no problems but that was Gigabyte - not sure what can I expect with MSI because this is my first MSI product since 2003. RMA should be possible because card has failed to fulfill expectations which are guarantied by MSI...
If they refuse to send another card or return the money, what should I do???
    Computer specs:
    AMD Phenom 2 X4 955BE
    Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4
2x2 GB DDR3 Mushkin Blackline Stiletto
MSI GTX 560Ti Hawk (previously owned Gigabyte GTX 460 768MB which never went above 65°C even highly OC-ed)
    Seasonic 620-GM
Patriot Pyro 60GB and WD 640GB Green
    Thank you!
