MBP or not

Hi all;
We (my college-bound son, actually) are considering buying a MBP. However, judging from this forum, the MBP is fraught with problems from freezing to wonky NVIDiA graphics cards.
Granted, usually only people with problems post here. However, are there also satisfied users somewhere? Do these problems merely represent a small percentage of the user base or should we be running in the opposite direction?
Thanks;
Chris

Couldn't agree more, Scott.
You will find threads here, for example , in which very large numbers of first and second time posters seem to have suddenly discovered problems with everything from graphics cards to XBench scores.
Intriguingly almost none of the "regulars" on these boards seem to suffer the same problems. Many of the posters , too, provide next to no details about their problems, and many say they come from places that , strangely, very, very rarely figure on the Apple boards and , equally strangely, seem to come in floods a day or two after after one dubious web site or another say something nasty about Macs.
By way of example I recently contacted many of the other long time Mac users on the boards and asked whether they had suffered any problems with the graphic chips in their MacBook Pros (following "The Inquirer" claims about NVidia chips). These are all honest people to the best of my knowledge. I've known many of them for years. None of them have been backward in coming forward when real issues rear their heads. Quite a few of us have been in strife when we have been TOO ready to come forward about problems in the past, in fact.
Yet, out of a sample of more than 50 MBPs responding not a single one had run into a problem with their graphics card!
Well, I'm left with a choice between believing a large number of people I've known for years and my own personal experience on the one hand (ie no problems at all) , or first time posters who provide next to no real information, or simply parrot other alleged posters, from a bizarre array of locations that simply doesn't "fit" the usual profile of Apple discussions users (ie total devastation and why isn't Steve Jobs hung, drawn and quartered) , on the other. Hey! would any sane person NOT see a problem here!
Now, of course, Macs, including MBPs, go wrong from time to time, and a few of the posters about graphic card issues are clearly genuine (and I don't blame them if they get upset when I make comments like this). But after looking at the posts in one very lengthy thread relating to this matter I reckon about 1 in 50 to 1 in 100 posts are a real indication of someone suffering a genuine hardware problem. Quite a few of the others are simply software issues completely unrelated to the claimed "issue", and probably 4 out of five of the "first time posters" there are simply spurious nonsense from people who don't own an MBP at all. They just get kicks out of "stirring the possum" as we say in Oz!
I guess Apple, given the huge market success of models like the MBP, are going to have to get used to such nonsense from the opposition and from those who, like this dingbat reckon that Apple are the cause of whatever ails them in their lives!
Are Macs "unreliable" and the Apple "out to rip you off "? Well, I've been using them since 1986. I have absolutely no connection with the company apart from using their product. Not a single share and not a single dollar in income from them. My total "repair" costs over that period (more than 22 years) amounts to $200AU for a replacement battery for a three year old PB12 and a couple of hundred bucks for a few keyboards, mice, and a soldering job on a Mac Plus 15 years ago. Not bad for 22 years, I think most computer users over this sort of time span would agree!
It is pretty easy, I think, to see why they almost invariably top the surveys by a country mile on both reliability and customer service.
But ultimately all you can do is make your own judgement about such things!
Oh, and just by the way, I haven't seen the slightest problem with my own "Santa Rosa" MBP, despite working it into the ground for the last few months as a "desktop replacement" with an external monitor, as well as a "field computer" bounced around in off road vehicles in the Australian outback, since November last year.
Cheers

    I have the same problem.
In Leopard I could hit esc a couple of times and it would restore the display. In Lion no matter what I try nothing works except a total power down and reboot.
I can hear the hard drive searching around but no screen.

I have been searching every other day for over a month trying to find a fix in Windows Safari with no joy.  I want to resolve, not switch browsers. Please offer up a solution that only refreshes the Top Site thumbnails once a day or as some controlable interval.  Started about two versions ago, now on ver 5.1.5. Windows 7 64bit.
    Safari 5.1.5 for Win64 bit, Windows 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!

  • Problem: MBP Is not allowing external monitor Widescreen resolutions.

I am using a 27" LCD HD TV (Yes, TV, not monitor) DVI->DVI and the MBP will not allow me to use a widescreen resolution on my external monitor.
Yes, I assure you, it is Widescreen. The native resolution is 1280x720.
Anyone have a clue how I can fix this? Running a stretched 4:3 screen ***** HARD. This was my old windows PC monitor and I never had this issue before.

    Hi,
I've got the same problem. Tried SwitchResX with not much success. I'm using as second screen a Benq w100 projector. When I force resolutions like 854x480 at about 60Hz, the projector won't recognise it, which makes sense since the input is not supported as such from a PC.
I think the clue would be sending a HDTV/HDMI signal through the DVI cable. Has anybody managed to do this with the ATI Radeon X1600 that comes with the MBP?

  • MBP does not connect to a hotel WiFi

    Hi All,
I'm here in Germany since 6 days. My MBP is not connecting to a free hotel WiFi. The Airport shows full bars but the webpage is not opening. Then, i tried to restart the machine but i didn't work out. The Network Diagnostics shows that every thing is GREEN but the internet and server, they are RED (failed). However, I can join the same network using my iphone and other Windows laptop.
    Now, about the diagnostics,
-In the 1st step, I choose the Airport.
-In the 2nd, I selected the "PARKHOTEL". The network i'm trying to connect.
-The 3rd step is the question of having a DSL or cable modem and my answer is NO.
-The 4th step is there any device connected directly like switch or router and my answer is YES.
-The 5th step is to restart the router device and click CONTINUE when it is done restarting. Frankly, i can not restart the router bcoz I'm in a hotel and i'm connecting to the internet from my windows laptop and my iphone. So, i assumed that it has no issue. So, i clicked CONTINUE and the connection singe starts rotating.
-After a while, the 6th step is about any other device i can restart as a router or firewalls or managed switches connected directly to the device that just restarted and my answer is NO. Finally, the diagnostics said "Network diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems".
    (NO RESULT ACHIEVED)
Then, I googled a pit trying to find a solution and i found the same issue. The solution was to disable the firewall and i found it already disabled in my MBP.
    (NO RESULT)
In the meantime, i deleted all other networks except for the network & the wifi connection I am trying to connect to.
    System Preferences/Network/Advance/Airport
    And i restarted my computer.
    (NO RESULT)
    Finally, i found something today.
The IP address of the Windows lap is 10.1.10.xx
But the IP address of the MBP is 10.0.11.xx
I changed the IP address of the MBP manually and i got the same issue.
    Also, (NO RESULT)
    Any ideas? Plz..

When this happens to me (top part green, bottom red), it's always dns... At check-in the hotel should have given you some info, including the IP address of the router, and the dns if it's different than the router. You know the first 3 parts -- 10.0.11 -- so you just need to figure out the fourth. Usually it's either 1 or 253, but if it's some random address then you are not going to guess it.

  • Macbook pro not turning on after SMC reset. I have the following problem. Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011does not sleep when closing the screen. smc due loud fan and an X on battery symbol

Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011 dos not sleep when closing the screen cover. Today I Turner my laptop in. However the fan was working loudly and stayed loud. After Start I noticed an X on Battery symbol. Clicking on it, it showed 'no battery.' I found out that a potential solution for this problem was SMC reset. I also noticed that the leds on magsafe was not lightning. Despite this I tried to execute the smc reset as described on apple support site. Switching off, plugin the magsafe connector, pushed the buttons shift + alt+ ctrl + power. Then i pushed the power button, but my mbp is not turning on. I pushed several times on the power button but nothing works. The magsafe is also dark meaning the leds not lightning. Can anyone here help me on this ?

Problem solved by my own. But do not how :) magsafe again working and the laptop tooo

  • Clicking sound and MBP does not boot

Two months ago, I upgraded to a MacBook Pro, which today suddenly failed to start. When it happened, I had woken it from sleep and started up EyeTV through its USB-powered antenna. The programme started up normally then the screen froze and the spinning ball appeared. I had to switch off the computer by pressing the main switch for 10 seconds, but when I switched it on again I only could see the grey screen. Suddenly, a light, repeated but irregular clicking sound was clearly audible under the left hand back side below the screen. I found a picture of an opened MBP on the web and it seems that this is not the location of the hard disk but there is no way to start up the computer again, not even from a CD. I cannot fathom why this happened since I never had a similar problem but I am worried that the Eye TV antenna, which has a magnetic foot, might have been too close to the computer, and has altered something inside the machine. As I am currently not close to a Genius help area or even in a country with easy access to an Apple Help Desk, any idea on how to solve this is welcome. Thanks!

    Hi,
That sounds very encouraging. I was once able to get it into target disk mode as well, but I can't remember whether it was with the startup DVD in it or not. With the startup disk I can do all the technical check stuff, except anything that requires me to use the HD, which the MBP does not recognize anymore. Can you describe more in detail what steps you took to get it into target disk mode, I mean sequence of events: first connect the two MBPs by Firewire, then start the second MBP, then the first one in Target Mode by holding T when starting up - or in another sequence?
I still believe that something substantial must be wrong with the machine and will give it into repair even I can manage to start it, but it would be divine if I could simply get my data off the HD. Please let me know if your surface scan surfaces anything.
Just out of interest, what does "to send me a box for a repair" mean? In Europe, we have to bring the machine back to the Apple shop in person...
    Thanks, Alex

  • After recent apple update MBP will not connect to wireless internet

After running recent Security and Airport upgrades my Mac Book Pro (Intel) will not connect to wireless home router supplied by Verizon (GTE) and several public wi-fi's. Cannot get IP but sees networks. My iMac PPC still works fine. Prior to upgrade everything worked fine at home and abroad to other public wi-fi's. MBP still connects at work with AppleBase wireless. Can the upgrade be removed? Is there a simple fix? Should I wait for apple to fix this and break something else.... If not broken don't fix it..

    I'm having similar issues.
I have 2 MBP's. The newest one is about 1 month old and has never been able to connect to a WPA network. The older MBP is 20 months old and was originally installed with Tiger and gradually updated via Software Update and a retail copy of Leopard and subsequent Software Update updates to 10.5.2. Interestingly, this MBP was always able to access my WPA network until I decided to do an erase and install. I installed the retail copy of Leopard and was subsequently unable to access my WPA network. So, I went back to my Tiger install disks - but I'm guessing that whatever Leopard did *possibly* updated the firmware of the airport card as, even under Tiger, I could not access my WPA network (yes, I agree it seems unlikely that an OS update would/should update firmware but I am grasping at straws).
Trying to further understand the problem , I noted that the Network utility in System preferences would always show either a connection error or a connection timeout whenever I attempted to join my WPA network. I turned on syslog in my router and attempted to rejoin the network and saw the following errors:

  • MBP will not automatically sleep

In the last couple weeks, my MBP will not sleep on its own. I have reset the PRAM and removed the battery and held down the power button for at least 10 seconds, then booted with no change. I also repaired disk permissions on the HD. I can force sleep through the apple menu, or pressing apple-option-eject, or by closing the lid. But it will not sleep on its own. I have it set to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. I have also tried having all applications closed. This randomly started happening, no new apps or hardware have been changed. Any ideas???

Please, not everyone at once!!! That's okay, I figured it out. It turned out to be a preference file. I logged in with a different account and the sleep function was working fine. So I moved my Preference folder to the desktop so it would create a new one once I logged in again. When I did this, the sleep function worked perfectly. I didn't know or feel like finding the exact preference file, so I just dumped the entire folder.

The System DVDs that originally came w/your MBP has the troubleshooting tools.  Suggest that you find them.
Do you have any 3rd party utility DVDs?  If so, they may work.  DW would be your best choice.  Does wonders.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

I have a MacBookPro 5.5 and an iPad 2 32GB 3G; both items are pretty recent.
Today I tried connecting them via blootooth. MBP states "pairing success" (only after NUMEROUS attempts!!!) whereas the iPad seems to be still searching and indicates the MBP as "not connected". That over and over.
Also, the iPad does not seem to recognize ANY bluetooth device in the house (they ARE discoverable since my MBP DOES "see" them) like, for instance, my mini-Mac.
Any help would be appreciated; (I hope the problem lies NOT in the bluetooth antenna, in other words not in hardware.)
P.S. The MBP seems fine since it DID connect to Mac-mini.

    Hello:
Was the iPad paired with another device?  If so, you need to "unpair" it from the previous device.  Bluetooth devices may be connected with only one thing at a time.

  • MBP does not boot from a USB external hard disk (backup disk)

My MBP does not manage to boot from an external 1Tb LaCie desktop hard disk (USB 2.0) where I cloned my startup internal hard disk with SuperDuper! (I tried CCC too). Unfortunately, this is exactly the external hard drive I bought to clone my startup disk and I desperately need to have it bootable at startup.
As a matter of fact I cannot see anything at startup (option key pressed or not) without disconnecting it from the USB port. Just it seems that the system hangs up if I keep the drive connected at boot time!!!
    Please, advice.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi, thanks for the input.
I produced recovery media with the built in recovery media creator, and with ATI Home 2013. This was in the form of a usb flash drive for both types, and a cd as well in the case of ATI2013.
In all three cases when booting up with any of these media inserted, the boot hangs almost immediately and the Num Lock led lights and that's it.
I have set the boot sequence to
    USB
    CD
    HDD,
Disabled Secure Boot in bios and switched off Fast Start in Power Options.
F12 does allow me to enter bios and change whatever settings I want.
This coupled with the fact that the option to go into recovery console has disappeared during the boot sequence leads me to think it is summat to do with the laptop settings rather than the assorted recovery media I have created.
Thanks again for coming back to me.
