MBP Original Battery Capacity?

I have a 9 month old (June 2009) 17" MacBook Pro5,2 with the new built-in long life battery (the battery is not user replaceable). I think the battery is faulty as battery life from fully charged to empty seems significantly reduced.
"About This Mac" reports battery full charge capacity at 8783 mAh, battery condition as "Check Battery" and cycle count for this battery is 65
iStat Pro reports battery health at 64%.
coconutBattery doesn't work for this model MBP as it's reporting original battery capacity at 1300 mAh.
How can I find out what the original battery capacity was so that I can compare current capacity with original capacity?

G'day Stolds, and welcome to the forums.
Your 17" came with a battery which Apple specify as a "95 Watt hour" battery.
The "nominal voltage" for the battery in the 17", used when converting from Watt hours to mAhs is 7.3V. (unlike the 15" and 13" which have a 10.8v battery)
P=vi (Watts = volts x amps)
Therefore i (amps)=P (watts)/v (volts)
95/7.3 = 13 Amps (roughly)
Multiply by 1000 to get mA
so this is a battery with roughly 13000 mAh capacity when new.
The non-removeable batteries in the unibody MBPs are rated to maintain 80% of original maximum capacity for 1000 cycles .
Your battery is way below par, and clearly defective. Take it in and get it replaced under warranty.

  • How can I check the percentage of my iPhone 5's original battery capacity?

I'm wondering if there's any way I can check what the capacity of my iPhone 5's battery is compared to its original capacity.  I know Apple will replace the battery for free if it is under 50% of the original capacity since it's still covered under the one-year warranty but I'd rather know that's the case before I send it in and go without a phone for a week.

A problem does exist; it takes significantly less time for me to deplete my battery now than it did when I bought my phone.  Please stop acting like this discussion is over just because you cannot answer my question.  I would like to seek the knowledge of other regarding ways to check my battery capacity.  I appreciate your suggestions, but I purchased an iPhone 5 because it was an upgrade to the iPhone 4 and it was supposed to have the same battery life.  However, 20 months after I purchased my iPhone 4 the battery still lasted longer than the battery in my 11 month old iPhone 5.  My warranty expires in a few weeks and I need to know now whether I should send it because once the warranty expires a battery replacement is going to set me back $80 plus shipping fees.

  • MBP 17" Battery Capacity and Run Times : Survey

I've had 2 MBP 17's so far, and I'd like to get a general idea from everyone about their battery capacity and run times they are experiencing.
My first MBP17 had a Full Charge Capacity of ~5900mAh before calibration and PMU reset, and 6800mAh after. This translated to about 3:40 of run time under light load.
My current MBP17 had a Full Charge Capacity of ~5899mAh before calibration and PMU reset, and 6942mAh after (currently). This translates to about 3:48 of runtime....still trying to get some more real-world run time numbers under different loads.
This proves to me that it is quite critical to calibrate your battery and reset your PMU at least once to ensure that your battery is reporting it's correct capacity. I'd be interested to know what everyone else's batteries are reporting.

  • MBP original battery

my battery has not held a charge for some time, and when i moved my laptop, i realized that the battery back itself is coming unsealed at the edges, and no longer actually goes in properly. is it going to leak or burn? is this a heat related problem, or is it making it run hotter? and yes, it is the original battery!

Mine certainly has been doing that, although the cycle count doesn't change. My battery followed a somewhat different course. It was a SMP rather than a Sony. For a while, it just had shorter run time and longer charge time, but otherwise seemed to behave normally with normal health. After my Applecare expired, it started shutting my Mac off unexpectedly, and I reset the SMC and was able to calibrate it. The health dropped from 87% to 77%, and 17 days after Applecare expired, the health changed to "Check battery". From that point on, the health fluctuated from 68% to 88%, and I decided it was time to replace it, which I did. The cycle count was 276--not quite 300, but I know I didn't use the battery enough during the first year I had the Mac.
    I can't complain--it lasted 3 years, which was about what I expected.
It never came apart like the OP's, and I am still wondering if that is actually a sign of a defective battery, especially since someone once posted a picture of a spare battery that had swollen and split apart--a battery that had never been installed in a Mac. I think all of the ones I have read about were Sonys, and the Battery Update program was for Sonys. My impression is that it is just a small fraction of all batteries that swell and split apart, and makes me wonder if Sony has some sort of a manufacturing problem.

  • Original battery capacity vs poor current capacity

i have a problem with my battery,
    thanks to coconutbattery.
the problem is my poor autonomy (1h30) .
    The current capacity is :
    2594 mAh
    The original capacity is;
    5500 mAh
    Voilà the cause !
My battery were changed by Apple.

This autonomy problem exist since the battery change
it is possible to fixe this autonomy problem for a full capacity ?

  • 7 months MBP battery capacity

    Hi,
I'm trying to find out the range of battery capacity for a 7 month MBP. The original battery capacity was 4600 mAh and now it only has 4439 mAh left. Is this normal?
I do calibrate my battery every 2 weeks and I tried resetting the SMC.
    Any input would be appreciated!

The figures look fine, PaRaDa, but that is a pretty low cycle count for 7 months usage. Do you run it on the mains most of the time or is it just not heavily used?
These batteries tend to last best if you vary the usage pattern a bit, running off the battery for a while every day or two, etc., without necessarily taking it all the way down to flat.
see http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html for some useful advice on maximising your battery's life.
Recalibrating every few weeks is a good idea if your MBP is generally hooked up to the charger, or if you don't use it a great deal, but every fortnight is probably overkill.
I'd be aiming for a bit less frequent full recalibration, and maybe a bit more general use "off the charger", to get the best out of it.
But as Fred says, 96% is still pretty good after 7 months.

  • Original battery says: 1300mah..

    Hello,
have a new 17" 2.8 mbp and in coco battery 2.6.5 it says original battery capacity is 1300mah but my current battery cap. is 12608mah. both my percentages are at 100%. Question is, what is the full capacity of this battery? Is it 12608 or 13000 and coconut battery only reports 1300? thanks

Sorry, I dont have an answer to your question. I'm hoping to revive this thread by responding and bumping it to the top. I have the same question as you. I dont have my battery numbers in front of me because I am here at work and my Mac is at home.
Coconut Battery has a custom battery capacity section in the preferences. I added my current battery capacity that I got from the Apple System Profiler into this custom preference so now Coconut Battery matches what it says in the System Profiler. I have no idea if this is the correct method or not.
Maybe someone here could chime in on this as well as what the original battery capacity should be on the 17" MBP?

  • Battery Capacity And Charging

My MBP's battery has an original battery capacity of 6300mAh.
When fully charged its capacity is at just under 6800mAh.
I guess this would be considered overcharging; could this cause problems of any kind?

My replacement battery started with just under 6800 mAh, and over time drifted downward (which is normal) then stabilized (at around 91% health ±5%, where it's remained since about cycle 30). While it's above 6300 mAh, iStat and CoconutBattery will report health as 100%.
As Kappy stated, the 6300 mAh value (rounded up from 6296 mAh, actually) is a nominal value, calculated from the wattage and voltage specifications of the battery. Individual batteries will vary, with many initially exceeding that calculated value.
Bottom line, what you're seeing is normal and nothing to worry about.

  • Ipod Battery Capacity

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows the capacity of the battery for the 30 gig 5g ipod video. To clarify, i'm looking for a value in mAh, not in hours. There are more and more replacement battery kits becoming available for ipod videos and i was wondering how these replacement battery's capacity compares to the one in my ipod.
Thanks for the help in advance.
    PC   Windows XP

I want the original battery capacity in Mah because more and more aftermarket battery companies are marketing their replacement batteries. I want to know if they actually have a greater capacity than the current one in my ipod. I have currently seen batteries for salle that are for the 5G ipod 30gig that have 450Mah, 550Mah and 580Mah capacity. It'd be nice to know how many Mah my current battery has so i can compare.

  • Current Battery Capacity Discrepancy?

    I'm confused.
My computer is functioning perfectly, just that the battery is a little bizarre.
I use coconutBattery to determine charge capacity and stuff.
It tells me that the current battery capacity (4422 mAh) is higher than the original battery capacity (4400 mAh).
It is still the original, stock battery (it fell outside of the recall). Could the app just be reading it wrong, or what?

Goo goo gajoob, YMC. I don't think you have anything to worry about. The nominal 4400mAh capacity of your battery is only an approximation, and its indicated capacity is so close to it that I suspect it is an accurate actual reading.
We occasionally hear from folks whose batteries are reported to have capacities in excess of 12,000-20,000mAh. They clearly aren't getting good readouts, and need to replace their batteries. One indication of a very old, tired battery is an inability to report its condition properly.

  • 10 Week Old MacBook & Current Battery Capacity already at 94%

Hello everyone, I recently bought a new macbook (11/09) and mainly use it thru its power adapter, although I do use the battery occasionally. Yesterday I decided to perform a battery calibration and it went as follows: The battery was fully charged when I unplugged the computer from it's power supply (the original battery capacity also showed 100% via Coconut). I took the battery all the way down to about 1% then re-charged it completely only to return and see that the Current Battery Capacity is 94%. Is there something going on with my battery or is it normal to lose 6% on a calibration? As I said, I have been typically using it with the power cord connected vs. just the battery. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should take it off the charger every so often, so the battery can drain and recharge. That will help some.
I can't see losing 6% of the battery as new. However, I also don't know how long the MacBook sat there prior to your purchasing it, etc. So while it seems odd, it also isn't outside the realms of possibility.

  • What is the normal MBP Battery capacity?

I have an approx. 1 month old MBP; the first battery was just replaced by Apple. I received the new battery on Friday and let it charge fully. On Friday evening, I turned on the MBP and saw that the battery showed "original capacity 5500, current capacity 5391 (fully charged)". I thought that a bit strange, so I decided to calibrate it following Apple's instructions. On Saturday, after fully charging it again, it showed "current capacity 5301". So, now the capacity is worse - ?
Before calling Apple, I'd like to know if it's normal to have a 5% capacity reduction within about 24 hours - at that rate, the battery will be dead shortly.
I'd appreciate any input/experiences with battery capacity.

FIGURED IT OUT! My battery level reached 95% and the battery status said, "the battery is not charging"
I looked it up on apple support and found this very useful section in the Macbook Pro User's Guide:
"If the battery icon in the Finder menu bar is set to show the percentage of charge, you might sometimes notice that the battery does not attain a full 100 percent charge when the power adapter is attached. This is normal behavior; battery life is maximized if charging is not continuously cycled on and off when the battery’s charge capacity is between 95 and 100 percent. When the battery level eventually drops below 95 percent, it will charge all the way to 100 percent."
This fits with my problem. This macbook pro has been literally plugged in for well over a week!
So much for the "apple products are losing their quality"

  • 20 month old MBP with only 80% battery capacity

Been noticing my 09 alu uni body 13" MBP now has a battery capacity of just 80%, according to Coconut Battery. I realise this app might not be too accurate, but I only checked it as I've been noticing a reduction in battery life recently.
I've been using MB's for years and employ all the usual good practices, I also regularly recalibrate the battery, although I understand these new non-replaceable models don't require it, nonetheless, it can do no harm.
My question is, is such a reduction in the batteries capacity normal on this machine after just 20 months use?
BTW- The use consists of running on mains at work during working hours, resting over night during the week, use on battery/mains at home at the weekend. According to Coconut the battery has had 348 cycles. Again, no idea how accurate this app is!
I have 3 years cover on the machine, so it it's deemed this is not usual I can pay the Apple store a visit, but I'd be interested in the views of other users whether this is normal or not.
    Thanks.

If you think that's necessary. But losing 20% capacity in almost 2 years is pretty good for any battery. It's just that we can monitor it more accurately now.
You can get your current capacity vs design capacity via Terminal without coconut:
    ioreg -l | grep Capacity

  • 13" MBP Battery Capacity

Anyone else seeing their battery capacity drop off?
I got my 13" MBP back in Mid June, and since then my battery capacity has declined to 95% (max capacity is now 5201mAh) with 49 cycles. I have calibrated it a couple of times new but it hasn't helped in any noticeable way.
The MBP does tend to live plugged in over night (and on) collecting tweets but then I used to do that with my old white MacBook without causing any problems to the battery.
At this rate of drop off I would be surprised if the battery readed its 1000 charge cycles at 80%

That's normal. The decline in battery capacity is not linear.
