MBP OS Leopard update that now hangs at the grey apple screen

I ran software update for OS Leopard on my MBP yesterday and it has been in a continuous boot cycle that never gets past the grey Apple screen. The only sign of life is that periodically it will make the boot noise and the computer remains quite warm.  I have tried shutting down completely and then rebooting in safe mode and also rebooting using the OS disk but I'm pretty sure the Leopard OS disk doesn't work as a boot disk.  So my first issue is to try and fix the boot problem.  The second is that clever me didn't back up before hand so I am looking at trying to connect by firewire to my iMac and try and recover some files... given the issue would this be possible?

See if it boots into Target mode...

If so it should act like an expensive Firewire Drive for your other Mac.

  • Upgraded to osx lion via bootable USB stick but start up now just hangs on the grey apple screen

Hi.  I've just recently upgraded from snow leopard to osx lion 10.7.3 on my laptop and it works perfectly! However I then tried installing on desktop and problems......
    1. I got the 'the error can't install message' so after researching' I made a bootable USB stick with lion on it.
    2. Installed on start up from bootable USB stick, no problems their.
    3. Restarted and it just hangs in the grey apple screen.
I've reset the PRAM, started in safe mode, fixed disk permission etc, Even done this (http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070204093925888).
I'm going to leave the grey screen over night to see if it does start up, but then we have the problem of an extremely slow start up.
So.... I am posting this to find out if anyone else has this problem and fixed it without having to do a full clean install as some data like email lists etc I never backed up (I know stupid).
Hope someone can help as i am lost on what else to try.
    HELP!?!?!?
    Dan.

    Update 01.03.12
Computer is starting now but.... It takes 10 minutes and that is without my sound card, hardware and external hard drives plugged in, gonna test that now.
Are their and fixes for slow start ups?
    Dan.

  • G5 Boots up and hangs at the grey apple screen, then fans rev up loud!

I am so confused. For some reason my G5 boots up, I hear the tone, and it gets to the grey screen with the apple. The circular "wait" image never comes up and then after about 1 minute, the fans rev so high it sounds like my computer is preparing to take off! I tried taking out all the RAM and reseating it. I even tried booting with each pair one at a time. I tried removing the battery, and putting it back, I tried unplugging, resetting the PRAM, removing the DVD drive, and replacing the DVD drive. No luck. about 4 weeks ago i was able to get it to start up with an install DVD in there when (and this may be dumb luck) I tried a trick I read on these forums where you use a hair dryer to heat up the RAM board. I reinstalled Tiger and it seemed to work perfectly. Then it revved up the fans and froze, no kernel panic on the screen. The heat trick did not work again. Now all I get is the grey apple screen with revving fans. It won't even recognize that I have the install DVD in there when I hit the "C" key. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi !
(don't mind my writing in english... I speak Dutch originally)
First question : What type of Powermac G5 do you have...?
If it's a liquid-cooled, then you might (perhaps) have trouble...
(we keep this (for the moment) aside)
If it's an air-cooled, just boot up pushing the Alt-button untill the "boing" sounds.
Then start up from your system-HD (select it, if you have more then 1).
Still doesn't work: insert your back-up(cloned) HD (who doesn't make a clone these days) & re-boot (same procedure as described above)(or just connect it over FireWire & select the HD after rebooting with Alt pushed)
When you were able to boot from your (original) HD > let the "stetoscope-program" (I forgot the name, I'm now at work right now & no Mac nearby) (programs > help-programs > stetoscope) run on your HD (controlling the Disk (right side button) & it's dedications (left side button). Patience...
If you (untill now) still have no luck (but, as some people like myself, have more then 1 Mac) > (re-)install OSX 10.5.8 (if you have it) or 10.4.11 on a (spare) HD & after installing > insert in your G5 & try again...
If still no (good) news... Let (me) know.
    Grtz, H.

  • G5, updated software and now it won't start up past the grey apple screen

    Hello,
I'm in dyer need of help. I just purchased an old G5 from a friend and when I connected it the internet it said there were a few (7 or 8) updates available for the system. There was very minimal memory left on the system but I proceeded with the updates, it said the system was going to restart after the updates. The grey screen appeared with the apple logo and the circular loading graphic but right after that the screen went blank and now each time I try to start the computer up it does the same and shuts down after that screen displays.
Is there anything I can do?

I'm not able to do that without the proper install disc, am I correct?
    Correct.
Is it possible for me to use that or am I in the same boat without the proper install disc?
Correct, you need an Install Disc.
Or will it try to install on my iMac?
    Disconnect them to be sure.
Sooo, what is this Install Disc you're talking about? The iMac's Gray Disc? That won't work for the G5.
There's still a chance of repairing the HD, Your best bet is DiskWarrior.

  • MacBook Hanging Up On Grey Apple Screen

I have a problem with a MacBook that I bought in late August. I turned the computer off this morning, and when I turned it on again two hours later, I noticed that it was very slow. It took a long time to start up, the desktop took several minutes to appear, and then automatic log-in applications took another few minutes. I restarted it again, hoping to fix the problem, but now my computer completely hangs up.
The chime goes off, and the light grey screen appears, as well as the apple. The spinning thing at the bottom comes up, and nothing else happens. Even after an hour, the computer still makes its "thinking" noises. Not the loud, grating dead-hardrive noise (I don't think) just the normal one.
I have no idea why this is happening. I've installed nothing new, deleted nothing, or made any big changes. Well, I just moved to England, but I've used the correct power adapter. I don't think that would be the issue.
Oh dear, in the middle of typing this I am hearing a very bad noise. It almost sounds like something in there is clicking. It's hard to tell where it's coming from, but it sounds like two things are rubbing up together, but something is catching and causing that click. I don't think that's a good sign.
I do not have my repair disks with me, unfortunately. I cannot start in safe mode, it hangs up here, too. I've reset the PRAM. I attempted to start up by CD with the AppleCare CD, just to see if I could. I got what I expected, nothing. I'm assuming it's a harddrive problem.
Any help will be very appreciated. Thank you.

I'm replying to this in case anyone else searches with a similar problem. Directly after I wrote that message, I tried to start it up again, and was greeted by everyone's favorite question-mark folder icon flashing on the screen. The Geniuses couldn't do anything with it, including startup with an external drive, and my hard drive has been replaced.
    Back up your stuff, folks.

  • I tried resetting my pram but now my MacBook won't startup it just stays in the grey apple symbol for 20 mins and then goes to the login page but does not login!

Help, my backscreen keeps flickering and I got told that resetting the pram (alt ctrl p and r) might fix it. But now it won't start up at all. It was working fine befor but now just goes on grey apple screen for 20 mins then the log on page comes up but it won't log in! I don't have the original install disk. I'm not sure what to do and I can't afford to take it to the apple store. What can I do?

It's not uncommon for it to not work the first time and sometimes, you have to try it a few times. Turn off your antivirus software and your firewall while you are trying to restore the iPad. Enable them again after you restore.
If that still won't work, post back with detailed information as to what exactly does happen as you go through the process.

I have just switched on my new 5s and gone through the intro sections. After entering my apple id, I selected the icloud update I wanted it to use (from my 4s). It is now stuck on the progress bar screen and has been for hours. Can I get it back to the original settings? I want to set it up as a new phone, until I can get on to a better wi-fi signal. Any help would be great.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • I updated my spouses iphone with the same apple id, now he is recieving my texts. how do i change without loosing his data?

I updated my spouses phone using the same apple id. I must have clicked ok to something i shouldnt have at some point.....because now he is recieving my texts! I still recieve my texts, but he also recieves them.
I went to restore his phone but it said it would only restore to factory settings and i dont want to loose the data.
    How do i solve this?

Try settings, messages, tap on send & receive, there should be phone number options to choose from...uncheck your phone number.
This is an added feature to allow a user to see messages across multiple platforms like your iPad and iPhone.
