MBP owners who converted from iMac - thoughts?

Hi - I just sold my 24" Core 2 Duo iMac and I'm either going to replace with one of the 27" iMacs or I may go portable. I don't think anything I use is going to bring the variables of desktop vs. laptop power into concern - it is more portability vs. screen real-estate + the financials. I'm typing this on one of the latest macbooks (with a 5400 drive) and I've been using this for the past couple of days and enjoy elements of it but not sure its what I really want. So, the big question for the community here that I have is: are any of you happy MBP users who switched from using an iMac? Any major regrets? As a huge mac fan, I know neither are really BAD choices but I do need to make a decision and I'm really indecisive. Thanks.
Steve

The "screen real estate" issue is easy to take out of the equation , Steven. The MBP (even the 13" model) can support DVI external monitors up to 30" if you want it to, and a good quality third party 24" screen can be added for just a couple of hundred dollars these days. This gives you the advantage of both portability when needed with screen space when required (though unless you buy an expensive high quality monitor it won't be quite as glorious as the 27" iMac screen, perhaps). I spend a lot of my time with my 13" model hooked up to a 24" Benq screen , which does what I need perfectly. (In my case, though, my iMac was a 20" model, so for me the MBP with external offers more room, not less, when I'm "at the desk").
That said, the performance advantage of the 27" i7 iMac over the MBP is very substantial, and even the base model 27" offers a decent lift, so don't dismiss it too quickly. You get more storage with the iMac, too.
I'd say the real equation is portability versus performance, with the price equation varying depending on which particular models you are considering, how much you wish to spend on an external screen for the MBP etc, etc.
Cheers

  • Newbie to Aperture and I am a new Imac owner who switched from a PC

I shoot with a Nikon D300 and I keep all of my photos on external hard drives. I perfer to keep my photos located on these drives. How do I move my photos into Apeture to work on my photos and then have them stored on my external hard drives. I use Photoshop CS4 and want to continue to make advanced adjustments within this software. So I do I work within both programs?
Thanks for the help and advice.

And in addition to William's advice, you should do all your photoshop adjustments from within Aperture using the external editor function. That way you can round trip and have the results appear in Aperture immediately after saving in Photoshop.
The one thing to remember is that Aperture is now your photo manager - if you start doing adjustments there and then opening the files independently to Photoshop from the Finder you could end up with quite a mess very quickly...

  • Panasonic TM900 Owners Who Successfully Converted 1080 60p Video for FCPX

I am looking for Panasonic TM900 owners only please!!
(Please don't respond unless you have converted 1080 60p video from a TM900 camcorder)
Thanks to Tom Wolsky, it appears there is a resolution for how to get 1080 60p video into FCPX that is like quality with no degradation via ClipWrap.
What I am looking for is other TM900 owners who have successfully done this and are pleased with the results, i.e. no degradation in video quality, no weird video artifacts added or random blank green frames added every second or so.
What did you use, i.e. ClipWrap, Aunsoft Final Mate, etc?
Was the process simple or were there a lot of "tuning" steps required?
I am at a loss here because I love my TM900 especially with 1080 60p video and was hoping the AVCCAM Importer would be the saviour we all thought it would but unfortunately it is only for Qucktime 7 and Final Cut Pro, not FCPX.
I am trying to figure out what to do, purchase FCXP assuming you guys have had great success converting or wrapping the .mts files, buy the add on product or purchase another program which has this support built in, i.e. Adobe Premier Pro or worse yet, go back to my PC.
I just want to be able to make simple edits with transitions, create a nice DVD menu and output to Blue-ray.
    Appreciate some feedback!!

I used final mate to help make MTS videos compatible by mac as I do not want the immediate rendering when importing videos to FCP. If you want to burn MTS files to blu ray disc. Why not try Toast? Refer to this post:

I'm converting from a PC to  iMac. On the PC I have many Inbox folders with PR info for distribution. How do I get these folders from the PC to the iMac? I've used the Windows e mail Inbox folders for an easy access filing cabinet for years, as this all goes out on e mail. Thanks for assisting me!

I think the easiest way would be to use Migration Assistant to get all that over...

What is Apple doing for those iMac owners who failed to have their Seagate HD replaced by April 12, 2013?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you purchased the iMac less than 3 years ago and it has got one of the defective hard disks, Apple will still replace it for free. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller. A Genius will check if your Mac was purchased less than 3 years ago.
If the computer is older, you will have to pay. Note that if you already have the iMac on April 12th, 2013 and before, and you knew that your iMac had a defective hard disk, you should have taken it even if the hard drive was working correctly

Converting from Dell PC to iMac.  Photos have been duplicated.  Can IPhoto eliminate the duplicates?

If you're seeing the duplicates in the iPhoto window (and NOT the Finder) then you can cull out the duplicates as follows:
There are two apps, actually one app and one Applescript script (free), for finding and removing duplicate photos from iPhoto. They are:
    Duplicate Annihilator
    iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates

    Kaibil

iPhoto used to support the PCD format up to a few years ago. It's extremely frustrating that Apple decided to no longer support this format and now I'm directed to pay nearly $40 for an app that will (GraphicConverter 9). Did Lemke Software make a deal with Apple so we'd have to pay a premium for a very overpriced converter? And, how are decisions like this supposed to encourage the use of iPhoto?
Apple users already pay a premium to use a Mac. Obstacles like these eventually destroy loyalty to the Apple brand. Just ask Microsoft how their back room deals that exploited their customer base worked out for them.

It is possible to convert an iMac from North America (60hz - 110V) to us it in Europe (50hz - 220V)?

No conversion is necessary. Your iMac will run from 100-240V, all that is needed is a simple plug adapter that you can pick up at any electronics store or even at the airport.

Apple hasn't done anything. This is a security feature that you did not check to see had been properly de-activated before buying the phone.
If there was a back door, it would be useless as a security feature.

  • What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

Rather than convert, you'd be better off capturing with a more current version of the program -- one that supports AVCHD video. Otherwise, you're in for a lot of headache. A converter isn't going to solve your problems.
BTW, when you say Premiere 6, do you mean Premiere 6 -- which is over 10 years old? (There was no Premiere Elements 6.)
Trust me on this: Capture with a Mac version of Premiere Elements 11 or 12 and your video will be perfectly compatible with any Mac program.

  • When converting to iMac from windows, hotmail accounts cross messages?

Since I converted to imac from (2) PC's, I installed hotmail on the imac mail program.  I have (2) hotmail accounts, and (1) icloud.  Now, sending out emails from the imac, the messages sent out in one of the hotmail accounts are replied to and come back on the other hotmail account.  ?  This doesn't seem to appear to happen on the other PC's that still have the email accounts set up on them.  Does anyone have ideas?

If you take one of the edited-on-XP files which can not be edited a 2nd time on > XP, if you edit it on the Mac and save it, can it now be edited on XP?
    No.
Before and after editing a file for the first time on XP, open Terminal, change
to the folder where the files are stored, and give the command ls -l filename
and see is there any difference in the output.
Sorry but I'm not a Terminal/Unix whiz. I'm not quite sure what you're asking me to do here.
Interestingly, I had an occasion to open a file that had been previously edited and saved on XP and then copied over to the Mac. When I went to save it, I got msg:
"Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'Macintosh:Users:david:Documents:aDL:Open Client Initiative:New Requirements.' There are several possible reasons: <none of which was the case>"
I then saved it to the desktop with no problem. Does this perhaps provide any clues?
    TIA,
    David

  • CS6 has been converted from the upgrade I bought to a trial version.  What the heck is going on.

I upgraded from CS5 to CS6 for my IMac.  I downloaded CS6 and out in my serial number and it worked fine for a number of weeks.  Suddenly when I went to use it it said it was a trial version.  I had to register it to use my CS6   I registered it and it worked,  but only as a Trial Version of CS6 Extended. I do not want CS6 Extended.  I deleted the trial version of CS6 Extended from my hard drive and once again downloaded my upgrade of CS6 and put in my serial number and it worked fine for a couple of weeks. Today, once again, it tells me it is a trial version and will not load unless I register the trial version. What the heck is going on? This is crazy.  I simply want to use CS6, for which I paid. Help!

  • Boot last rev MBP off clone of 2007 iMac.

Hi all, I've got a bit of a problem, and I'd be grateful for any advice / assistance. I've got a refurb mid 2010 15 inch MBP on order, should arrive tomorrow I hope. But I've got to head for HQ the next day. Normally I work on my 24-inch iMac, it's about 2007 (I think: also refurb) - 2.4 Ghz C2D. "Had I but world enough and time" as the poet said, I'd get all the stuff that I need for my work installed on the MBP, and take that to HQ. But I won't have time to do all that on top of my normal days' work Monday and Tuesday. Assuming I can get an external drive today, to get me through the HQ visit I'm thinking of using CCC to clone the iMac's internal HD to that external, then booting the MBP off that. The iMac is on SL (10.6.5) and I'm assuming the MBP when it gets here will be on that or more - not that that should matter. Should work, no? And am I right in thinking it's shut down - hold option key + power on to get a choice of boot location please? And afaik you can boot off a usb-connected drive, it doesn't have to be Firewire? Also, I'm not sure whether or not the FW connection on the iMac works.Would it matter if I wrote the clone from the iMac using USB, then connected it to the MBP using FW? Or use USB for both? Sorry about the level of all the questions, I know there are guys / gals out there who boot off thumb drives, sandwich toasters and all sorts, but I never do this stuff and now I've got to do it in a rush. Thanks in advance, save an old man having to lug a 24-inch iMac all around HQ offices! TIA - Terry.

OK - cloned the iMac internal to the new external. IMac boots off external. Now just need MBP to show up tomorrow and see if that does. Should do. - Terry.

  • Convert from php to java

    Hello all,
Can someone convert this code from php to java.
    <?php

I am looking someone to help me w/o $.Go away.
This reminds me of this one time. I had written this dice roller in PHP (still in use, actually) and someone who was using it thought it was nice and wanted a version of it for himself. Only he was running a different game system, some home brewn thing, so it had to be different in certain respects.
First he just asked me if he could have the dice roller I wrote. I thought about it but eventually agreed. It wasn't much as code. Then he asked me to modify it for him, explaining that he could not do it himself. For some reason I was feeling generous that day, so I did not ask him for his physical address and send him a mail bomb. Instead I said that I would modify it for him if he explained what modifications he needed.
Then he told me to go read his game system on his web site and figure it out for myself. I must have been in a saintly attitude that day because I actually went and looked at his site - which predictably, was totally disorganized and incomprehensible. I pointed this out and he told me that I would have to read through everything once or twice, and also, it wasn't done yet so I should check back periodically.
This is a person who I had never met in my life, even online, and with whom my first contact was his request for my dice roller.
Where do these people COME from?
    Drake
