MBP - Playing music from my Ipod with Front Row?

So that I don't clutter up my MBP HD with a bunch of mp3 files, I simply connect my ipod via its USB cable to my MBP when I want to listen to music.
However, when I click on Front Row, and select my albums to play, it doesnt show anything at all. It only wants to show items in the Library folder.
Is there a way to make Front Row play from my ipod or do I really have to have everything in the Library folder instead?
Thanks

Anyone know how to import songs into library without
copying files?
Thks!
I'm not sure this is totally right but here it goes:
First make sure that your settings are for manual addition of songs for your ipod, otherwise when you get to "adding playlists" like I mention below, it will be a nightmare.
You need to have your mp3 files as DATA on your iPod - not just as the songs that regularly play nicely through the iPod. So enable data use, and have all of your songs on the iPod in data mode.
Then what you need to do is open all of your music files. Essentially what will happen is that your iTunes will add them automatically to your library as a LINK to the Data on your iPod. When your ipod is not connected, the files will not be playable and will have the ! next to them.
Place all of the songs (which are now really links) into appropriate play lists.
This, in my mind sounds like it works. All I remember is that when you have an MP3 on your desktop, and double click on it, it adds it to the library from the Desktop location.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE "ADD A COPY OF MUSIC TO ITUNES FOLDER UNCHECKED" under advanced settings, or your music will be copied to your computer.
Good luck, I hope this works for you, it would seem that it does.

  • Can't play music from shared slideshow using Front Row (or iPhoto)

Can anyone play a shared slideshow and have the music from that shared slideshow play in Front Row?
I can't get the sound to come through either in iPhoto or Front Row.
It seems to me that you should be able to do this.
    1. We can play shared music.
    2. We can play shared photos and slideshows
    3. But I can't play shared slideshows with the selected music from that shared slideshow..........
    Anyone.... ?
I don't think this is possible at this time but would like to know for sure if anyone else can do this?

    Heya Joseph,
Yes you can play shared music in front row.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1655.html
Now as far as a slideshow I would think so as well as the authorization for that music comes from iTunes to iPhoto.
    Heya Justin,
Remove the following files to the trash (do not empty until you test for function):
    ~/library/caches
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.iphoto.plist
    - Open iPhoto - then quit
    - Open iTunes - then quit
    - Repair your permissions - > http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh17.html
    - Restart your computer again
    - Test and see how its working
    Hope that helps!

No.  There is no built-in software functionally to directly access an iPod from an iOS device, such as an iPad.

  • How do i play music from my ipod shuffle gen 4 on external powered speakers

Can I play music from my IPOD shuffle gen 4 using external powered speakers?  If so, how do I hook it up?

First a curiosity question. Why do you want to play through the computer? Why not use headphones?
Ok, now to your question. I have never done this before, but this intrigued me. I did some experimenting and got it to work. Here is what I did:
    1) Connect Touch to computer.
    2) Open iTunes.
    3) Your device will show up in the left panel.
    4) Click the little triangle next to your device to expand it.
    5) You now have access to the different content on the Touch.
I have played stuff from Music, Movies and my playlists. Everything works the same way as if it was on your PC.
Hope that helps and good luck!

  • [SOLVED] Luck with playing music from an iPod Touch 4th Generation

I have tried to play music from clementine (which is my "when the doodoo hits the fan music player") using my iPod because I know how well it syncs.  Unfortunately, I can view my library of music but when I attempt to play a song, it will crash.  On a side note, I have tried the ifuse and git variants of clementine, libimobiledevice, and ifuse with no luck.  Please do not hesitate to notify me of my ignorance if there is a solution located within these forums.
Anyone willing to give some helpful advice will be much appreciated, thank you.

It won't work. The music database associated with 4th gen ipod touch hasn't been cracked by the libimobiledevice team. Any device earlier than that will work, as long as the database hasn't been updated past version 4. It is ridiculous considering how long the iPod 4G and iPhone 4 have been out.
I know how it feels. I have had a 4th gen ipod touch and have always had to sync it in Windows.

  • Playing music from my ipod on a different computer

    Hi,
I have an ipod mini, which is synced to my iMac at work, where I have a large itunes library. At home, I have an old G3 iMac, with only little space, so I don't have any music in my itunes library. Up to recently, I just played my music from the ipod at home. But since syncing at work with itunes 7.02, I can no longer play music at home from the ipod. I can see all the songs, but they are not playable, both in the ipod music folder, or the selection folder created.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Are the songs showing up as light grey text? Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen would indicate that your iPod is set to automatically update. If you want to access your iPod directly, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you would need to change the update method to manual in the iPod preferences: Managing content manually on iPod

  • Why cant i play music from old ipod playlist

I have an old ipod classic with quite a few playlist that were created on a very old version of Itunes.  I just finished building a new pc thats running windows 7 64 bit and I have succesfully loaded Itunes. When I conect my Ipod classic to itunes and attempt to play an old playlist, the playlist is not populated and none of the songs show up. I can create a playlist with the newest version of Itunes and the playlist will play with out any poblems, its just the old playlist that were created some time ago that will not function.

You need to use something like podtomac or podtopc to get all of your music off the iPod first.
Once it's on your PC/Mac, sync it in the normal way.
make sure the iPhone is de-authorized from your friend's PC and authorised on yours and that you are using your own iTunes login

  • Playing music from my iPod on two different computers

    hello,
i was wondering how to use/authorize/sync(etc...) my computer at work to play my ipod. when i hook the iPod up to my computer at work, it asks if i want to sync and erase all the songs. obviously i do not want to do that, but merely use my iPod to play music without having to re-create my library at work. is this possible? do i have to rip the music all over again just to play music at work?
    thanks in advance.
    rob

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. Do this on your home computer and you'll be able to connect to your work computer without receiving the "Erase & Sync" message..

  • How can i play music from my ipod on another mac?

i have my music library in itunes (on my ibook). i transfered the songs to my ipod. how can i play the music on my g5? i see the ipod in itunes and also the songs, but i cannot cklick "play".
    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It is set to Auto update.
If it is set to Auto update, when you plugged it in, it updated the iPod to match you iTunes library. Just play them in iTunes.
If you want to play songs on the Mac without loading the songs from the iPod, iTunes prefs -> iPod. Set to Manually update all songs and playlists. They will no longer be grey.
You will have to sync the iPod from home first.

  • How to sync my music from my ipod with my new hard drive without any lose my music on my ipod?

Bonjour, hi, I have a question. My hard drive broke and I lost all my music when I reconnect my iPod, iTunes tells me that if I sync with my ipod, I lost all the music on my ipod ... and replace my music with the music on iTunes (I have no music on iTunes). What can i do?
    Thanks you.

Restore the media on the new computer using the backup of your media from your old computer.
The iPod, like all iDevices is not a storage device, it is merely a mirror of the content in your iTunes library.
    If not backup exists:
On the new computer, sign into your iTunes account and Authorize the computer.
Cconnect the iPod but do not sync.
    Select File > Transfer purchases.
Any media not purchased from iTunes or ripped from CD's will be lost, but at least you will retain your iTunes purchases.

  • How to play music from my iPod in iTunes?

I have installed iTunes 7.5 on a second computer and plugged my iPod. I can see its content but everything is grey and I can not play the songs?
    Why?
    How can I solve this?
    Thanks a lot
    Olivier

Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to update automatically (sync). If you want to play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on the desktop and check this link for alternative methods: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Use Ipod with Front Row

Hey, I just got my new iMac core 2 duo and its awesome...I've been wondering if there is a way I can use Front Row with to access the music on my iPod. I have all my music on my ipod and don't want to sync it up with the computer(transfer all the files on to the iMacs HD) b/c it makes more sense to keep all my music on one storage device(iPod). I tried a few things like making an 'allias' of my ipod and putting it in the Itunes folder, and tried running a script I found on google but I can't do it. Thanks.

Well it looks like I'm getting a lot of views, but noone has replied yet....

    hello.
i wonder, have you resolved this problem? if not, i had the same problem, and it was really annoying me. i, too, posted a message on these boards - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3639877#3639877. nobody replied though. so, not knowing what else to do, i reset my ipod because i also had recently updated both my ipod and itunes software when i started having this problem. this seemed to fix it somehow.
if you are still having the problem, maybe try doing this.
let me know if this works for you :o)

  • ITunes 7.2 won't play music from my iPod.

I just installed itunes 7.2 today, and plugged in my ipod. However, it just showed the info about my ipod (gigs available, name of it, ect.) but won't recognize the songs! Help! When i try to uncheck the manually manage music box, it tells me that all my songs on my ipod will be replaced by my library. I really don't want this to happen since I have over 5 gigs on my ipod.

Click on the chevron (the little triangle) to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the traditional song view and what's on your iPod.
