MBP power brick caught fire - what to do?

L.S.,
This evening my MBP was charging in the study, while I was in the living room, when I noticed a scorching smell. As i went into the study I heard and saw small sparks coming from the powerbrick cord. I janked the cord from the socket, but I'm afraid to use it. The plastic of the cord was molten and blackened ans some wire metal is sticking out.
I tried to call technical support here in The Netherlands, but they are closed all ready. I'm in dire need of using my laptop this weekend, but that would require me to buy a new power brick. I'm thinking about trying to fix it, but then again it might just lead to more trouble down the road. I'm not very fond of the thought of buying a new one, as this was not the result of misuse or anything. Unfortunately my MBP is 14 months old, so out of warranty.
It's hard to describe what happened, but I have the pictures of what is left of the power cord. Is it fixable?

A faulty power supply is not something to play around with. I would NOT suggest that you attempt to repair it. You may be able to repair the cable, but you may not resolve the underlaying cause of what caused this in the first place. You'll be opening yourself to some potentially serious hazards. If your MacBook Pro is still under warranty... and it does not appear that you damaged the cable causing the problem, Apple is usually very good with offering replacements. The last thing they want is news that their power supplies are catching fire.

  • POWER ADAPTER HAS JUST CAUGHT FIRE!!!

While sitting using my 15' powerbook g4 i noticed a strange burning smell. At closing the screen i realized what it was, the power adapter had caught fire at the part where the cable enters the brick.
This could have been disastrous if i wasn't here when it happened. The adapter hasn't moved much in the 3 years I've had it, only 3 times i think so it couldn't be ware and tare.
Has anyone else come across this problem and have you had any luck getting a replacement from Apple? Typically my apple care has just ran out 2 weeks ago!!
    Owb

Same problem here, a few weeks ago. There was a burning smell, then smoke from the joint between the cable and the cable head (with the green/orange light on it). Called Apple, and the chap i got on the phone, when asked, stated no, they don't have any policies on their products catching fire once the 1 year warranty has passed. I rang again and got another chap who seemed a little less sure of himself, so I went at him a bit down the phone, and managed to get an engineer in Sweden?? Eventually they offered to replace the cable.
I guess if your prepared for the phone bills, just keep ringing and shouting until one of the goons on the other end will do something about it.

  • My iPhone cable caught fire. What steps can I take?

I mostly charge my phone via my laptop. The cable has been acting up the past week or so, (computer said USB disabled, etc.) I also noticed some bunching near the end. Decided it was probably time for a new cord, but didn't think much else of it.
Tonight I stepped away from my computer for a few minutes. When I returned, I noticed the cable had melted, and the now exposed wires were red hot. Next thing I know they catch fire. I removed the cable from the area immediately, and it cooled down.
Definitely not trying to play the blame game (Have had three Apple cables do something similar before, (2008 MBP charger, iPad 2 cable), though they never caught fire), but this could have been so much more serious, had I not been around. I've already ordered a new cord, but am a)frustrated I had to order a new one in the first place, (my phone is less than a year old), b) want to avoid this happening in the future.

Did you call Apple about this before replacing the cord on your own?
    a) If the phone is under a year old it is under warranty.
    b) This sounds like something Apple would like to know about.  Note there is a "Contact Us" link at the bottom of all these pages.
    c) They may have hints on how to avoid this in the future.

  • My Iphone 4s which I bought less then 3 months ago caught fire today and burnt the back off and a hole in the battery.. I got a good burn on my finger also.. Not sure why this happened..   I wonder what I should do

I bought a new Iphone 4s at walmart with my at&t upgrade and today, it caught fire, melted a hole in the battery and melted the screw connectors on the bottom of the phone and the back came off.. Im not sure what to do on this deal.. Im now trying to get it to work and dont want to spend 500.00 on a new phone when this one messed up for no reason.. Luckly it just burnt one of my fingers.. where is was it could had burnt my house down very easy.

If safe, carefully slide iPhone into a plastic bag, double bag it for sure. Use items like pencils or kitchen utensils so you do not touch it. Make Genius reservation, and take it to Apple for replacement under Warranty.

  • My verizon charger caught fire. Now what?

Its a Verizon brand portable charger, bought two months ago at a Verizon store. Had it plugged in only a few hours, when suddenly a cloud of brown smoke and a burning smell burst out.  Thank god I was sitting right there.  I took it right back to the store, and the clerk confirmed he smelled smoke. But they're only offering me a partial credit, and instead of returning it to Verizon to find out why it caught fire, they just threw it out (I got it back).  Now what?  Only two months old, only charging a few hours, and it catches fire?!
    Model B141000

They have a 1-year warranty on chargers, but there can't be any physical damage.  There's no way to differentiate if you were careless or if it was a defect.  Go with the partial credit or just buy a new one for full price somewhere else.

  • Fire in power brick

the other day, the power brick on my 12"pb burst into flames where the cord from the computer enters. that is unsafe and shouldn't happen. i'd like apple to just give me a new power supply, but i don't know the best way to do that since the computer is probably 6 years old and i don't want to pay for a support phone call.
    any thoughts/suggestions

Take it to your local Apple store - hand it to them and, nicely, ask for a no charge replacement for the power adapter that 'burst into flames'. A new non-Apple power adapter runs $35 to $50, while the Apple adapter sells for $79.

  • Can i use my old ipod firewire power brick to charge my iphone?

i have a power brick from an old 20g b&w ipod. it looks like a laptop brick, but smaller. it has a FW socket and says it puts out 12v 67a.
i'm going on a trip and would like a spare charger. will this work for my iphone 3g or will it fry it?
    thanks!
btw - i did a search on this topic and found similar threads, but none addressed this particular FW charger.

i'm getting a 404 error on that link for the ipod touch manual. but i looked at p.33 of the iphone user's guide, and it does say that you can't use a FW charger. it doesn't say why, however.
i see that the iphone charger is 5w/1a. what happens if you use a 12w/67a charger with a device that's configured for the former?
according to somebody in this thread, the device being powered "requests" only the power it needs, so you can use a more powerful charger (a MBP charger for a MB, for example) - but you can't use a less powerful charger to charge a device that needs more power (a MB charger for a MBP, for example).
(for instance, can you charge a macbook with a macbook pro brick - i know you can't do the reverse)

  • HP Photosmart 2610xi all-in-one caught fire/started smoking

I have a HP Photosmart 2610xi all-in-one thats started smoking and appeared as if it had caught fire. I had recently moved it from on top of my counter to under it in a cabinent with my computer. I used the same cords, plugins, etc, i move it all the time and this wasn't anything major. When i plugged it back in as usual the screen flashed white and then turned off. I tried to press the on button but it wouldn't start. So I went to HP Support and found a troubleshooting video, which i followed. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01321436&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...
As i was finishing step three, i plugged in the power cord into the usual outlet and then plugged the cord into the printer. The lights and Screen flashed rapidly and smoke started rising from the back. I immediatly unplugged the power cord from the printer and power outlet. What could have caused this, and what are my options. Ive loved this printer since i got it, and would prefer it repaired, unfortunetly its not showing up on the warrenty check so im assuming its out of warrenty, its pretty old. Thanks

The Photosmart 2610 has been out of production for five years or so, I bought my last new one at closeout when I retired in 2005.  I do not have any information on repair costs.  The HP Partsurfer site says "Note: This product (Q5550A) is no longer supported by HP as of  Oct-10-2008, and service parts may not be available. The information below is for reference only."

  • Power brick/ charging problem 2011 MBA.

My wife's 2011 13" MBA has suddenly stopped recognizing the charging cable when attached to the air, and so not charging at all. No recognition LED at all orange or green, nothing. I've done all the ususal stuff, switched power plugs, took off the extension cable, put it back on, ect, ect...
I was about to go see Apple but realized I have a 27" Apple LED display for my Mac Mini. I attached the charging cable from that display and walla! It took and started charging immidiatly. So that tells me its NOT the Air itself thats the problem, its the charging cable somehow. Its either the power brick and that cable or both of them. I looked up my year long Applecare ( I didnt purchase the additional 2 years ) and saw that I have at least until Dec 8th to get it in there to have the cable replaced after they do their own testing....but we know what the problem is. I bought the Air from MacMall, not Apple so they are assuming that its Dec 8th but its later than that and I can find my reciept from Mac Mall and find out and bring it with me.
ANYWAY....is or HAS anyone had any problems like this at all? With any other Mac? I have the new retina and my magnetic power adapter is different so I can't test it that way but it did work via the display. I guess I'm asking if anyone has any experience with ths issue?
    Thanks!
    Seattle

If I understand you right, you have already proven that it's the charger which is defect. So, go and have the charger replaced. Depending on what caused the defect you may get a new one under warranty.
If it's no hassle, take the MBA with you to test it on site with a new charger.
Other than that and FWIW, I'm sure you'll find other people who found their charger dead one day. Why, would that help?

  • Dead power brick - disposible?

    Hello!
A few weeks ago, I had the misfortune to bend the cable on my PB's power cable too far, and the cable overheated where it joins the brick - to the point of turning a blackish-purple! Needless to say, I never used the cable again. I have a new power cable, but I still have my old one around.
I was about to toss it out, when I remembered that many computer items can't be thrown away safely due to various chemicals. Are the PowerBook power bricks one of these items? If I can't safely throw it away, what should I do with it? Although I'd love a shiny new Mac, I won't be upgrading for the foreseeable future - so I can't return it to Apple. I need to find out if my town has a computer recycling program, but it's rather small - so probably not!
    -Dan

I'm not an expert, but I think most of what's in a power brick is harmless from an environmental standpoint. I think its mostly copper wiring.

  • Power brick problem

    Hi
I have had my current Mac mini since last September and haven't had any problems with it, so far. Earlier today, I wanted to clean my keyboard so I shut down the mini for the first time, in months. When I tried to start it again, a little later, it wouldn't power up.
I checked and re-checked all the connections and found out that the white cord that goes from the power brick to the mini is extremely loose at the power brick end. In fact, you almost have to look at with angry eyes and it won't power up. I don't know why it's so loose as I have never messed with this cable/connection and can't imagine it having been forced in any way.
Now, I have managed to get it to work but I have a question for the experts who hang around these forums...
I have an first generation Mac mini that sits on a desk doing nothing, for the moment. Could I use this mini's power brick with the newer mini ? I have checked the specs for for both machines and for the older one, 85 watts is specified while 110 watts is specified for the latest mini, that came out in August 2007.
I'm no electrician so before before messing anything up, I prefer ask people who know about this sort of things.
    thanks

    Specifically to address the question:
I have an first generation Mac mini that sits on a desk doing nothing, for the moment. Could I use this mini's power brick with the newer mini ? The older power adapter (supplied with PPC minis) cannot be used to power the new (Intel) minis reliably since the new mini has higher maximum load. What that means is that while an Intel mini would generally power up and run with an older adaptor, it'll typically crash or simply go off once it's running. At the very least it will not be stable, and at worst could result in damage.

  • 30" cinema dead: power brick, graphics card, or other problem?

so, everything was going fine, then I hear a power surge beep through my Ups, and my apple 30" display goes black. checked all connections, plugged in a spare monitor. checked and changed power connections, and all other advice from initial troubleshooting. computer seems ok, it shows both the apple cinema display and other monitor are active in the system preferences. but the power brick is cold, and no power is getting to the cinema display.
What are my next steps to see if my power brick has failed or some other problem has arrived?
    Thanks in advance.

Determined that one of my internal harddrives p**ped out at the same time. This may indicate a power surge ran through the machine. Apple hardware test hasn't been able to complete testing, it locks up after a few minutes.
I know these monitors and in the under $500 range nowadays, but it has been such an awesome monitor, I would hate to see it die.
How to determine what is wrong with the monitor?

  • Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro power brick extremely hot to the touch!  This affected my computer (It was hot as well) - I could smell something burning!  I am unsure the issue!

    Hello,
I purchase the latest 2013 Retina Macbook Pro, which I pluged in my charger and walked away from my computer!  When I arrived, my computer was in sleep mode and I noticed a faint burning smell and felt my computer and it was extremely HOT!  I then felt the power brick and it was even hotter!  10 minutes after I awoke the computer (ESTIMATED), the computer actually cooled down...  It's not hot to the touch but still warm!  On the other hand, the power brick is still extremely HOT!
Please help!  I started the charge at 3% and awoke it around 78% and now it's at 89%
Also, how long does it take to charge from 3% to 100%?  It's been about 2 hours to reach 89%
    Thanks,
    Anthony
NOTE:  Any support would be great!  I could use the advice as this is personally my first MAC!  I am thinking a software update to fix the computer from heating up when sleeping but I am unsure about the power brick!

    AppleSupportNow
I always thought that keeping it plugged in nearly 24/7 can damage the battery too?
No, not at all, the only damage from being plugged in all the time are IF:
A: its not turned off and in sleep mode ALL the time while plugged in
B: you dont unplug it ever couple weeks or so and drain the battery down to about 30 to 40%
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
but really all you would keep in mind is --"consider 15-20% is the same as 0% and recharge it"
Important useful info on your Lithium cells as compiled from battery experts:
Heat increases battery performance but shortens life by a factor of two for every 10°C increase above 25–30°C (18°F above 77–86°F). This is yet another important reason for the cooling of any notebook, not just keeping the processor and GPU cool. Mavericks lower power tasking (app nap) and combined with the cool running Haswell processor both greatly protect battery life on your Macbook now more than ever before.
Good news: *Mavericks not only increases a single charge cycle for longer battery use off a full charge,… but also prolongs the overall long term life of the LiPo battery in a Macbook by reducing the load conditions the battery experiences from heavy peak-use.
Counting cycles is not conclusive because a discharge may vary in depth and there are no clearly defined standards of what constitutes a charge cycle on a Lithium Ion battery empirically. Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count.
The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine.
Frequent HIGH depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
Although better performing when warm, lithium polymer batteries live longer when kept cool.
Lithium cells prefer draining conditions at a steady pace rather than fast pulsed or quick discharges, …this fact is idealized now with the Haswell and Mavericks app-nap low power tasking for battery use.

  • Apple ADC to DVI Adapter -- Power Brick gets HOT

    Hello all,
I just purchased an Apple ADC to DVI adapter to connect my 23" Cinema Display to my new Mac Pro. It works perfectly, but I've noticed that the white, square power brick is generating quite a bit of heat. It feels sort of OK (within tolerance) at the edges but toward the middle it's noticeably hot. Not hot enough to burn my hands, or cook an egg, but definitely toasty warm. Is this normal? Or does it sound like I have a defective one?
    Alan

If by "on" you mean the adapter is connected to your display and plugged in to an AC outlet, and you have an image on your display coming from your computer, then it's not dead.
