MBP processor problems

2.33GHZ Macbook Pro, 2gigs of ram, 120gb HD, no bootcamp, no windows, microsoft office installed.
sometimes when i am on my mbp (both battery and AC) for a couple of hours or so, the processor usage suddenly goes up to 99% and stays there, regardless of what apps i have open, or if i quit them. I can leave my mac with nothing running, and it'll still say the processor usage is 99%. This causes the mbp to get very hot and the fans come on full blast, only when i reboot it does the processor usage go back down to what it should be, and the fans die off.
what do you guys think the problem is? is something running in the background that i should know about? my first suspect was the anti-virus (Norton), but i've realized that even when i run a virus scan, the processor usage never goes above 60% or so, therefore why would it go up to 99% sometimes? and why cant i see it scanning?
My second suspect is maybe i have a virus or something, but i doubt that.
Also, usually when I have nothing running on my mac, the processor idle usage is around 25 - 30%. My 24inch iMac C2D falls down to around 5%, but it doesnt have any antivirus software. Therefore i assumed that the real-time protection that is enabled on my mbp's antivirus might be contributing to this, but even when i turn it off, nothing changes.
please help!

That may be possible. When I used it for a short time, I never let it run in the background, I always set it to scanning when nothing else was running.
While it may not really be necessary on a Mac, I run ClamX Av - a free open source AV program. You can look at it here.

  • MBP Processor: Which one?

    Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a MBP and am wondering which one I should get. It would be a 13-inch one, but which processor? I was told that the 2.4 would give bad performance if I ran VMWare Fusion on it and that I should get the 2.6 model instead. The problem is the $300 price tag for the 200 MHz speed difference. Is this 2.6 processor really going to be wildly better with Fusion?
I don't have money to burn so would like to get the best value but still have a Mac that will be rolling right along in a few years.
I also wonder if 8 gigs of ram would be better if I try and run demanding apps in Fusion but I guess that can be changed later whereas I'm stuck with the processor I order.
Are there other cheaper ways to make Fusion fly?
    Thanks.

When I 1st got my i7, I run Windows XP using VM Fusion 3 fine with stock 4Gb of RAM (1.25Gb for XP). However, the macbook did stating to run out memory when I installed windows 7.
I would highly recommend a solid state drive if you are using virtual windows, as it speed up switching between Mac and windows to a point where there are no delays. I'd even place it above RAM upgrade as the SSD act as virtual memory when the real RAM runs out. So there will be no noticeable difference if your don't have enought RAM as the SSD have very fast access speed. But you will end up with a smaller capacity hard drive compared to stock.
If you are planning to upgrade the RAM, may I suggest you only upgrade one stick 1st and get another if you need it later on. 6Gb of ram is plenty for most of application event running in virtual windows.
Also Apple charge a lot for RAM upgrade, you are better off souce the RAM from 3rd party.
P.S. I don't think 200 MHz difference on the same CPU core will make enough differences to justify the extra $300. You better off spending the money on extra RAM or SSD.
I agree with Sig, who ever give you that advice must been smoking funny cigarette that you can't buy from normal shops.

  • New MBP wireless problems

Hi all, im sure you are all sick of reading the same problems time after time. Anyway, mine is as follows..
Got my new Mac around 1 month ago, love it. My old 17 mbp always sat at my desk and i usually run a wired connection to the internet. Now after i bought my new 15 mbp i bought a time capsule, great i thouht. Spent 4 days trying to set it up to no joy. It was being seen by 3 windows laptops, 2 iphones and 1 touch, but when i tried connecting via my mbp it kept saying connection time out. I tried it without a password and it would show i was connected with an "all black airport icon" but still would not go online.
Hence i brought it back and continued to use it wired to the internet from Netgear router. Now my girlfriend bought me an Airport Express. Brillant i thought, maybe this will work. Set it up to create a new wireless network from my router (im in a different building 40ft away) so i could turn my music studio wireless, have airtunes etc.
But of course NO! My iphone can see it and use the wireless network, but not my £1800 mbp! Sometimes it scans and does not even see the network. And if it does, it tries to connect and fails.
My brother who is a wiz at these things tried for 2 hours yesterday. His Sony pc connected ok, my iphone and again ipod touch, but still no from the MBP.
So i brought it into the house where the Netgear router is running and my MBP can connect no problems.
Is there something im missing?? Why can i not have the simpliest of things in the form of wireless internet?
Any help would be great, if you need more detail etc, ill be happy to go into detail!

I found the solution after many many many attemps.
It's not a MBP problem, it's your wireless router.
1- Set your BEACON between 20 and 50. D-LINK router for example use 100 has default value. It's too long.
2- Change your channel. D-link default is 6. Use whatever channel. I use 10.
    Hope you enjoy!

  • 10.7.3 MBP Wifi Problem - Endless Timeouts & Dropped connections

I've been reading around here a bit already and so I know many other people are having Wifi issues with Lion, but given that there are so many discussions and so many pages of talk, it's hard to go through it all, and using the search I haven't found anything that's quite similar to what I'm experiencing, so I'm starting a new topic...
Basically, I've got a late 2006 MacBook Pro, installed 10.7.1 (form 10.6.8) on in back in Aug 2011 and everything seemed to be fine. I updated to 10.7.2 sometime in Jan and still didn't notice any issues, but wasn't using Wifi at all at the time.
Then in Feb I moved and started using wifi (with a Cisco N router), and noticed that often, the system would not automatically reconnect to the network after waking up from sleep. Just selecting the network manually worked on the first try every time though, so it wasn't so bad.
At the end of April, I finally got around to installing the 10.7.3 update. I read it was supposed to fix wifi issues and so was looking forward to it. It installed fine and didn't seem to cause any problems...
2 days later I moved again (to India), and all **** broke loose... Now, I can rarely connect to wifi (a Beetel G router, configed with WPA). Around 25% of the time, the network won't show up in the list (despite being a clear 5ft from the base station), and when it does show up, 95% of the time I get a "connection timeout" error - often immeadiately, but sometimes it takes about 10sec to respond. On the same network, 2 Win 7 Dells and an iPad 1 all work flawlessly - it's not the router...
One the occasions that I am able to connect, it usually works fine, but if I put the computer to sleep and wake up again, there's no guarentee that the connection will work again - it's back to the lottery. And sometimes even when it's connected, the wifi stays (according to the menu indicator) but the internet connection disappears (to the point I can't even ping the router - 100% packet loss, let alone any internet server)
I've tried zapping everything I can think of (PRAM, SMC), repairing permissions, clearing the remembered networks from the System Prefs, deleting old Locations and creating new ones etc. I have a clean install of 10.7.1 that I booted off of, but it still had the same issues!

I'm pretty savy with computers and have dealt with all kinds of stuff before, but this one is beyond me, and is really annoying! I konw my machine is old, but it was totally useable up until these Wifi issues, and now wifi is basically useless.
From what I've read, it seems like its a driver issue with the Atheros card in my machine, but most people seem to be complaining about dropped connections (mine rarely drops) rather than timeout connection issues. I've also never had the "hardware not found" issue that many people have, so I think this is something different.
Anyone out there have any advice? I'm getting close to losing it with wifi since the update!

    Sorry - to add:
I don't think it's a question of WPA vs. WPA2, or even channel number - I have 2 identical routers here and neither work (both default to WPA Ch 11) but I changed one to WPA2, new SSID, various channels and still had the same problems.
Another thing to note that should be irrelevant, but who knows: the Firewire controller on my machine died back in Fall 2010 - to the point where the system won't start-up unless I remove the IOFirewire***.kext from /System/Library/Extensions , and as soon as I do that, it works flawlessly (minus Firewire). It meant I had a **** of a time installing Lion becuase I can't boot off the Recovery Partition (which has the drivers baked into it), but by cloneing my HD, installing Lion onto the clone via a borrowed machine, removing the .kext's and cloning back, I got it on and everything seems to be fine otherwise... I posted about that problem before, but never got any answers. And it wasn't just me, my father has a late 2007 MBP and the same firewire issue happened to his within 5 days of mine (not a power spike - I think it was shortly after some system update if I remember correctly).

  • For all users of the newest MBPs - freezing problem

I spent the whole last week trying to detect the problem of the freezing OS (every N minutes, a freeze for 20-30 sec).
If you're experiencing the same issue, don't waste your time uninstalling 'suspicious' software like I did… this helps. Really:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8414998&posted=1#post8414998
Downgrading the EFI 1.7 (preinstalled or installed with Software Update) to EFI 1.6 solves the problem. No more freezing. The update procedure seemed a bit risky to me but well, it worked (you can use an USB stick, I used my external USB hard drive)
    My tech specs: MacBookPro5,4, 2,53 GHz, 4GB RAM, HDD - Hitachi HTS545025B9SA02, OS 10.6.1
One more thing: in case of other strange problems, try uninstalling Logitech mouse drivers if you've got those. That one solved my coreservicesd crashing problems. I'm waiting for the incoming update of Logitech.

yes, I did. I spent at least 8 hours searching for a solution here, in the forums and tried everything making sense... The EFI downgrade was the only thing that helped.
My personal opinion is: Apple should offer the EFI downgrade option to all users in an official way. It looks like my favorite vendor does not want to admit they made a hardware+software mistake (the EFI 1.7 update solves some HDD issues on some new MBPs but causes other problems on other MBPs).

  • Power Mac G5 dual processor problem

So I've got a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz that I bought used that only had one processor working. When started up, the screen hangs after the gray start up screen. I figure replacing both processors would fix the problem. Having bought 2 new processors, I installed them and now the computer won't boot at all. The power light comes on but doesn't stay on, the fans spin but nothing comes up on the screen. Is this a logic board problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jade8503, and a warm welcome to the forums!
After changing CPUs you need to calibrate everything for one, look for Apple Service Diagnostics, ASD 2.6.3 I think, not sure which G5s that is for actually, but it's a start.
2.5.8 should work on that machine as well.

  • Image Processor problem

When I try toi use image processor from Bridge it says that PS is busy with another task, but PS is not busy with another task. I'm using LR,BR, and PS all in CC

I have had a similar (the same?) problem with scripts and automated tasks.  I am on a Mac and have found cleaning the inactive memory works 100% of the time when I come across this issue (usually after running an intensive batch of commands).  It's like PS doesn't know how to release the memory it has been using.  Anyway, I use Memory Clean, and it is fine.

  • Intel Pentium Processor problem

Hi, please can someone help? I have an all in one desktop and yesterday the driver has been flagged up in the solutions centre as having a problem. It says its uninstalled and disabled how can I fix this many thanks in advance
    Vicky

What I would first try is just uninstalling it in Windows Device Manager and then reboot the computer.  When the computer boots back up Windows will detect it and automatically re-install the driver from a copy on your hard drive.  If that doesn't resolve the issue you could then try re-installing the Chipset driver as the processor driver would be part of the Chipset driver package.

  • Late 2013 13"MBP-Shutdown Problem

I was having shutdown problems with my Late 2013 MBP 13"-the MBP would go to the gray screen and the small pinwheel would progress to different hash marks every 3-5 seconds, the machine would not shutdown at all, it was stalled, so I called Apple and we trouble shot. During our troubleshooting adventure it dawned on me that the problem could be related to my Antivirus Software-Intego. So I went ahead and disabled the real-time scanner and...viola, it shutdown with no problem. So I am letting people know that as of currently, Intego's real time scanner could cause issues during shutdown. I placed it on a scheduled scan and placed everything else on; no issues now.
So my only question would be; I have the same antivirus software on my early 2012 15" MBP with no issues. Though, I do remember having very slow shutdowns for sometime and then it seemed to resolve itself. The major difference in these two machines appears to be, besides the retina displays, the mechanical HDD vs SSD. My 15" (early 2012) has two Mech. HDD while the new 13" has of course SSD. I am thinking the antivirus software isn't handling the SSD appropriately.
Any-how, I just wanted to give a quick (though detailed) heads up.

OK, I messed around with this issue over the weekend. Here's what I did:
    1. Used iPad 3 until I have run battery down to about 50%
    2. Plug in to left USB port on Late 2013 rMBP. Battery icon starts displaying "flip-flop" behavior.
    3. Replug into right side USB....no problem, all behaving well.
    4. Tried plugging in my iPhone 4s into same cable on left USB port, no problem.
    5. Replug iPhone into right side USB....again no problem, all behaving well.
    Here's where it got interesting:
    6. Exchange charging cable for a newer cable with the smaller-sized 30-pin dock connector.
    7. Plug iPad into left USB port...and viola! Battery charging icon is steady...no "flip-flop"!
    8. Replug into right side USB....no problem there either, all seems normal.
I have no idea what's going on, but this seemed to have solved prolem. BTW, the older cable, when plugged into wall charger, charges the iPad just fine.
Hope this helps someone else with this problem.

  • '09 MBP "Crash" problem triggered by Panic! Transmit

So, I'm having a problem with my MBP that's been driving me crazy for ages. It's trigged by Panic! Transmit but they have been unable to help me resolve the problem, so I turn to you.
    Order of Operations.
    1. System is operating perfectly.
    2. I launch Panic! Transmit. (No problem)
    3. I connect to a remote drive (S3/FTP/cloud) in the program. (No Problem)
    4. I ask Panic! Transmit to MOUNT the remote connection as a drive. (The drive gets mounted BUT my mouse has suddenly become choppy. i.e. I move it and it skips around jumping. Very rough movement.)
    5. I unmount drive (Nothing changes)
    6. I close Panic! Transmit (Nothing changes)
    7. I reboot
    8. Login screen shows up ... I click my User Name and Log in.
    9. The system auto-restarts before entering OS. (I never see the desktop)
    10. Login screen shows up AGAIN ... I click my User Name and Log in
    11. Now the OS tries to launch my login items ... it hangs for 10-20 seconds... nothing is being lauched. Something triggers and boom, it resets back to some backup state and starts to launch OLD login items that have long since been removed. It is also now re-indexing my hard drive in Finder.
    12. I go and change all of the login items back to what their supposed to be and continue going about my business.
    Questions!
    1. What file/operation is being corrupted such that my login items are being reset to some historical state?
    2. What can Mounting a drive be doing in the OS that causes the mouse to become super unresponsive?
Any help is appreciated, I bought Transmit and I loved using it, but it's more or less a waste of HD space as of right now and I wish I had an alternative to work with.

Did you find a cure for this? I have a similar problem on a macbook mini. Using Mountain Lion and panic transmit 4....

  • MBP+DVDSP4 Problems

I'm using DVDSP4 on the MBP listed below. It's my first time using it on this computer and I keep geting a Internal Muxer Error everytime I try to build the project or build and format it. I did a search for the error on the forum already and I found about four things that could cause the problem:
    1. transfer Problems between a firewire drive and burner
    2. MPEG encoding itself
    3. In and Out points on a motions menu
    4. Chapter markers in a place that the GOP doesn't like
I trouble shooted all of these and I keep getting the error. I also tried to build the project on my friends iBook and the G5's my school has. I've also completely rebuilt my project from scratch. Since the same issue is occuring on all these computers I think it might be an issue with the MBP hardware in general. I was just curious if anyone else has had a problem, or if anyone knew of a way to solve the Internal Mutter Error in general?

Since the same issue is occuring on all these computers I think it might be an issue with the MBP hardware in general
Not sure why because if all the computers cannot build it, sounds like it is not MBP unless related to making the assets
Couple of things to check, is there more than one video on a track not butted together? That can cause the issue. Something else to check quickly, change motion menus so not loops, in/out/length to 0 and remove all audio, or make sure the end point is the length of the audio if there is one on the menu. Also delete all MPEG/PAR files.
Are you watching the log when it builds? Does the app crash or do you see something then the error in the log? That can help track it down.

  • Is it possible to upgrade my MBP processor?

    Hi all,
I just purchased my MacBook Pro 2 months ago thinking that it was cuttig edge. I do heavy photoshop and 3D animation work. Needless to say how disappointing it was to see the NEW intel core 2 duo systems release a couple of weeks ago.
My question is, will I be able to upgrade the processor in my laptop?
I will definately need to use the 64 bit apps as they roll out next year and I understand that my MBP intel core duo is only 32 bit.
Also, isn't it possible to buy a 2GB memory chip plus a 1GB chip to boost my MBP to 3GBs?
    Thanks in advance.

Any advice on how or where to sell it?
I just sold my MacBook on eBay.

  • Processor Problem - Help

I have a Desktop 3000 J110 with a Pentium D 925 Processor.  A few weeks ago the motherboard was replaced for another issue ( the warranty had run out but Lenovo replaced the MB at no cost).
My problem: occasionally, one of the cores (core 1) shows a usage of 70-80 percent and I have to reboot to get back to normal.  I have reloaded the operating system twice and unloaded every driver to troubleshoot the problem.  Using Microsofts Process Explorer shows hardware interrupts at over 50%.  This problem has occurred before and after the motherboard was replaced.  After reloading the as delivered OS (Vista 64-bit) the problem still exists.  As a last resort, should I just replace the CPU?

Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 10-August-07, 14:16:42
have you connected power cable for the CPU?
Just to make sure that we are all taking about the same thing.
What BK is pointing to is the 4 pin / 8 pin power molex from the PSU?

  • MBP BOOT PROBLEM AFTER XP BLUE SCREEN!!

I was installing something in windows xp using boot camp and suddenly got the blue screen of death and the computer reset. Now, when I try to boot into Mac OS X the grey apple logo shows plus the spinning gray wheel under it and just sits at that. The MBP gets hotter and hotter because I can hear the fan getting louder and louder. I am close to freaking out because this is the third apple notebook I have had problems with. I returned a Macbook and a MacBook Pro already for problems. I should tell you that I left the MBP on sleep overnight and when I opened the display this morning I got a message telling me to hold the power button to shut down the computer. It showed it in different languages so I guess it was a kernel panic. Has anyone had this issue before? I have tried resetting the PMU and the PRAM but no luck. Please help me as I don't know what to do anymore!

    I simply reinstalled OSX
