MBP Random Black out Screen [ONLY ONLINE]

Hello everyone,
My Macbook Pro Early 2011 15 inch i7 with 8GB RAM at the moment is experiencing some trouble. When I'm watching videos online, the screen goes black after a few minutes. I know that the Early 2011 are famous because of faulty Logic Boards, but I don't know how to make the Hardware test without the disk.
And also, this problem started when I updated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. When the blackscreen started, I rebooted the PRAM and SMC, but sometimes it didn't do the trick, and It stayed for hours to the system booted. After I Downgraded from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, this issue didn't happen for 3 or 4 complete days, and it happened again now in Mountain Lion. So, Hardware or Software issue?
Well to summarize:
PROBLEM: Blackscreen only when watching videos or anything flash format on the internet.
SYMPTOMS:
Blackscreen Only Online When Watching videos that are in flash format, or any page that has something inside of it that has flash format (Example: Simulators Online).
Not rebooting: Persistent Blue Screen or No Safe Mode booting or After PRAM or SMC Rebooting no booting.
QUESTION: Hardware (Logic Board) or Software Issue?

You have the problem as found in this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0 - thread. Give it a glance and you'll see that many others are having the same problem with 2011 15" and 17" MacBook Pros. Basically, the solder on your GPU to logic board has cracked. In the end, you won't be able to boot at all (if you've not already reached that point).
Some people have been lucky enough to get a free logic board replacement. Unfortunately, many people have also gone through 3-4 logic boards and the problem is never solved. A replacement logic board is not a 'fix.' The only fix that seems to last any time is a BGA reball of your GPU. Lot of those repair shops around the world - make sure that you choose one who has at least a one year warranty. There is a list on Facebook of reballers across the globe -> http://on.fb.me/WaxddM.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • Help needed in file tx from MBP with blacked out screen to ext. HDD

just got off the phone with Apple .... seems like I might have a cursed NVIDIA graphics card in my Macbook Pro 2007 model (2.4GHz core2duo)
had basically kept my MBP ('07 model) in sleep mode when I went to office. When i came back, the white light in the front wasn't pulsing anymore and it was replaced by a bright constant white light - proceeded to open the lid... and the screen was totally dark ... tried a few key combinations in random to get it up and running but to no avail .. then checked a few forums on this issue... seems like lots of ppl have the issue but a lot of them also managed to get the screen back on by resetting the SMC and PRAM (which I proceeded to try) ... unfortunately hasn't worked for me despite multipe resets of the SMC and PRAM. Gave Apple a call and all things point to the graphics card having conked out ... this ***** big time!! ...
The worst thing is that after switching on my machine, I can still load software by doing the keyboard shortcut for spotlight and typing the application ... e.g. itunes is working and I'm still managing to play songs through myh machine.. only issue is that the display is totally dark...
Now.. my big issue before I send it across to the service centre is backing up my "Downloads" folder....
Can someone help me with how I can go about doing this through terminal ? I think I just might be able to pull it off with the keyboard if I get sufficient and specific help!!!!
basically I'm looking for transfer of all contents from "Downloads" folder to an external hard disk with the name "Active" ...
    help would be greatly appreciated!
Any suggestions on methods of backing up my data would be great!!...
Also, are there any precautions I should be taking/ things I ought to be wary of when sending my machine in to an authorized service centre?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Does your hard drive spin up? And do you have access to another MAC?
If so, you could see if you could mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop using FireWire Target Disk mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Also mount an external drive equal or larger than your internal drive on the host Mac. Then use a cloning utility like Super Duper on the host Mac to clone your internal drive onto the external drive. This will give you a backup of everything that is on your internal drive--it will be an exact copy. This would take some time, but would likely be the best way to back up everything on your drive.
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
It is especially important to back up everything on your drive, because when your Mac goes in for repair, sometimes the drive is erased and the OS reinstalled in the process of troubleshooting. Also, they will likely elect to thoroughly test the machine and do any repairs that are necessary, which could possibly include replacing the hard drive. If you have any sensitive data on the drive, you may even want to erase it before sending it in just on general principles.
    Good luck!

  • IPod Screen Randomly Blacks Out, Pauses/Resumes Music

    The short of it:
My iPod (80 GB, 5th generation) randomly pauses and resumes playing music; screen also randomly goes completely black (not dimmed, but black) though iPod still appears fully operational (can still hear the digital "clicking/turning" sound of the wheel if I scroll).
    The details:
A few weeks ago I did something I very frequently do - plugged in my iPod to my PC, synced it up via iTunes, and ejected it from iTunes. Only thing the least bit different was that this was the first time for me to hook my iPod up to iTunes since adding an iPhone to my collection and having synced that iPhone up via iTunes. Not sure that would matter, but just some additional info.
I then proceeded on a several week long vacation. I pulled out my iPod, hooked it up via the AUX jack in my car to the car's audio system, and immediately noticed problems. Songs would just randomly pause and then resume play. I confirmed this wasn't an issue with the earphone jack (since I know the iPod was designed to pause music when the earphones come unplugged). I looked at the device itself and began noticing that the screen was randomly blacking out though the iPod was clearly still "working" - this was happening whether I was invoking the wheel on the iPod or just holding the device.
Since I was on vacation, with hope of easily getting this resolved, I stopped by an Apple store. A tech there did a Restore of the device via iTunes through their Mac setups, and that made no difference. The Apple tech said my hard drive had gone bad, though I'm not sure I completely believe that. (I've heard stories before of people being given that diagnosis when really that wasn't the case.) I'm willing to replace the hard drive myself, but I don't want to go through all that just to find out that's not really the problem.
I got home, hooked the iPod back up to my PC via iTunes. iTunes immediately recognized that the iPod was previous formatted by a Mac and so proceeded with doing a format/restore for the PC. Still, problems persist with iPod.
I've run the automatic diagnostics on it (M25 Diagnostic 0.7) and it completed with no errors, green screen.
I didn't drop it, damage it, nothing. It's in practically new condition. Apple tech said that something people with the iPods that operate on hard drive storage (as opposed to memory storage) more frequently experience are problems with the hard drive because they wear the iPod when they exercise, and those hard drives don't take the rigorous running movement well at all. Not the case with me. Most "exercise" my iPod's gotten is a leisurely walk. Its usage (in order of frequency): flat beside me as I listen to music; hooked up via the AUX jack to my car's audio system as it sits in a cup holder; hooked into an external speaker via USB out.
Any help you all can offer to confirm the problem or resolve it would be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to fix it on my own (assuming repairs are not cost prohibitive), but just want to be sure I'm not wasting money buying the wrong parts or trying to fix something that simply can't be fixed.
    Thanks gurus!!!

  • Why does my ipad 2 screen keep randomly blacking out?

Ipad 2 just screen randomly blacks out. As I type this ? it has done it twice!

First thing to try is a reboot of your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
If that doesn't correct the problem make an appointment at an Apple store to have the iPad looked at.

  • My screen just randomly blacked out on my iphone

My screen just randomly blacked out on my iphone. It still rings when someone calls, and hold the two buttons together doesnt do anything... the screen just stays black... So cant unlock and I cant sync to my computer since the screen is black... HELP!!!

    Hi snwbuny721,
If your screen is black but sounds still work and your phone still appears to be responding, you may have inadvertently activated a feature known as Screen Curtains (part of the Accessibility functions). You may find the following information from the iOS manual helpful (pg 126):
Turn the screen curtain on or off. Triple-tap with three fingers. When the screen curtain is on, the screen contents are active even though the display is turned off.

  • BLACKOUT - iMac 27" Randomly Blacks out

My screen turns off randomly (blacks out), in order to get it to come back on i have to do a hard reset. (Hold down the power button to turn it off)I HATE to do this had to do it 3 times.
When this does happen I'm not doing anything that is demanding at all, listening to music and surfing the internet.
I have the latest firmware for the 27"...before the update I had no issuses.
Temperatures do concern me, although it appears that all temps are with in safe thresholds.
If temp is not responsible what is? My iMac is 6 months old!!!

Updating my last post:I get the blackout without the restarts and tried all the suggested remedies on these forums with no relief. I can see light from the grill covering the ram access port so I do not think it is fully shutdown but my # week old iMac will not respond to any wireless input devices so I must press the power bottom on the back to restart It which it does in a normal fashion. The machine does not seem to be running hot (much cooler than my black Mackbook) . I guess I will be bringing it in but I do not feel optimistic given the posts by users who did so and did not get a fix. I think this issue will take some time to resolve. I just wanted to add my two cents.

  • Ipad2 with blacked out screen fix by spanking

    Hi All
Just found out from the forum that if your  Apple IPad2 goes into a black out screen mode, you may be able to fix it by spanking it.
I had taken it to the Genius Bar and they would have replaced it but was out of warranty.
So taking it out of its case I gave it 5 slaps to the back of the unit with my open hand.
Supprise the when I turned it over and pressed the power button the Apple logo appeared.

  • Macbook Pro randomly blacks out

My macbook pro 13' mid 2011 model had recently (past month) experienced some screen suddenly blacking out issue (it goes to sleep randomly). I searched the forum and apple's support center, and they only address the issue for 15' 2010 model, does anyone else have the same problem, and what can I do other than brining my computer back to the Apple Store?

Below find the article from Apple support site. It may apply in this situation.

May be you should take the computer to the Apple store.

  • MBP Periodically blacks out with a faint "hardware" sound

For the last couple of days, my (approximately 2.5-year-old) MBP's screen has been blacking out periodically. When it blacks at, it does so for 2-5 seconds, and is accompanied by a very quite, and I mean the faintest - I don't know what else to call it - "hardware" sound? A bit like the sound one gets when one's Macbook Pro is starting up, but neither as loud nor as extended. Furthermore, this often happens while I'm writing, and the last two times it has occurred I have continued to write while the screen is black, and once it returns, I notice that what I have written has been truncated (for example, I am writing "anthropocentrism" and, once the screen comes back on, what I see is "anentrism." And yes, I DID hit all the keys. I'm a very accurate typist and this sort of thing has happened on more than two occasions). Does this have anything to do with the last update Apple released prior to the release of Lion? I can't remember exactly when I installed the last update, but there might be some correlation there. I just hope this doesn't have anything to do with my hardware...
If it's any help, I have an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (or is it 9600M GT? System Profiler is showing both) graphics card, although, as my description above would indicate to ME at least, it is probably not a problem with my graphics card.

Exact same specs as Mika on my powerbook, and I just recently got the exact same buzzing sound. It sounds like it is coming from under / near the trackpad. Sometimes it is quiet, and other times it is louder.
Running the diagnostic shows no problems. It sounds like a fan with a loose bearing or something else that is rotating and either hitting something else, or not working as it should. It started all of a sudden, and I'm quiet worried about the situation of the computer overall.
In general, almost the exact same problem as the O.P. and none of the solutions I've seen seem to correct it. I suspect it may have something to do with the video card, but I could be wrong (say an extra fan on it). Otherwise perhaps the harddrive, but I would have to know what the internals looked like to pinpoint it.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: After looking at another website to pinpoint where the sound is coming from, it is almost CERTAINLY coming directly from the hard drive.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/PBG4_15_AL_takeapart/AL_PB_G4take-apart.html
The hard drive is directly under the trackpad in the G4 Aluminum. Well, looks like my recent backups haven't been for nought.

  • UAC runs in the background, does not black out screen and prompt user

    This is my layout:
I have a script in the start-up folder that calls a .exe upon first login after the system comes out of sysprep.  In one account (Account A), when that .exe is called, the screen darkness and admin approval is asked for.  If I
choose to do my first time login on the other account (Account B) the exe will get called, but I will just get a flashing shield on the task bar which i have to click to get the black out and the prompt for admin approval.
Why is that happening?  I want the automatic blackout and prompt on
Account B also. Can anybody suggest some security settings i can check?
UAC is all the way up on both accounts, FYI.
    Thanks

Hello, and thank you for replying.
I have restored it, but i backed it up before I did, once i restored it, I restored it from the back up, that i had done previously. I do not have warrenty under this iPhone which is quite fustrating.
Sadly this did not solve my problem; the proximity sensor still does not respond to my face during calls.
I think my only option (last choice) is to restore it completely and start afresh, which is annoying since i'll lose all my game data from Jetpack Joyride .
Thank you for your response though, it was certainly helpful.

    Hi,
I got the same phenomenon on my testing machine.
Every time when finished update install, the logon screen won't load immediately, I usually tab on the keyboard along with the mouse to call the screen back.
You may also try to use the Ctrl + Alt + Del and recheck this issue, the next time.
This might be caused by the compatibility between the driver and the OS, you may submit this issue throug hWindows Feedback Tool, and wait for the new update.

  • Any way to black out screen during remote VNC connection to Mac?

Hi, I regularly connect remotely to Macs in my workplace, via VNC viewer from PC, in order to do support/maintenance work after office hours.
Unfortunately, the security guys in our office building often switch the target Mac/s off while I'm working on them, especially if they can see 'mysterious things' happening on the screen - could be an intruder, or a ghost! =8O
I can't blsme them, nor can I easily ask them not to do it - the place is huge, in a blue chip co, with many different security staff coming and going round the clock. Anyway, if I did ask them, I suspect I'd get an overzealous lecture about machines being left on overnight, blah blah.
So, can anyone tell me if it's somehow possible to black out the target Mac's physical screen while I'm connected remotely to it?
Maybe there's a VNC viewer app that allows this, or some Terminal command I could use?
I usually set up a scheduled power-on for the target Mac, then Shutdown when I'm finished working on it, so it's not as though it's being left unattended at any point, otherwise I could understand the security concerns.
I have to connect from a PC, else I'd be looking at using ARD instead. I can ARD to the Mac client from the Mac server, but that means a remote connection from within a remote connection - not recommended!
It would save me loads of hassle (and danger) if anyone could answer this one please?
Another thing that would help is if I can completely disable the target Mac's mouse & keyboard too?
    Thanks for any help,
    Paul.

Thanks for your suggestions Bob. I've now sent a feedback request to Apple, for what it might be worth. I'm not sure my user handle will endear me to them!
An excerpt from my message to them...
"Aside from connecting remotely, I've often heard people say they'd like to turn off a Mac's screen and input whilst leaving it running, for example during large overnight disk copies.
I can easily switch off a PC's screen separately (albeit not remotely), but still not able to do that on Macs, after all these years.
I'm sure such a feature would be welcomed by many, especially for privacy/security and energy conservation reasons."
Great if anyone else could also request the same, or, come up with a cunning way to do it?

  • Frozen & Blacked out screen

I bought my iphone around January last year, i've been having problems with it really since the first three months. I haven't really 'bothered' to do anything about the problems i've encounted because of sheer laziness (bad on my part i know) however it has now become beyond irritating.
    the problems are:
    1) when calling the phone freezes, the screen blacks out, meaning i am unable to cancel the call.. which results in most of my friends and family having very long answer machine messages, funny at first but bloody annoying. i cannot bring it back to the main screen unless i reset, sometimes it flashes back but the screen doesnt appear to register my touch.
    2) i'm not sure if my screen is extra sensitive or (lol) i hold my phone to close against my face, i endlessy put people on hold or call other people in my phone book. i'm not sure if its my cheek or the actual iphone?
I havent ever restored my iphone
i do not have excessive amounts of photos/apps/dodgy apps
and i do not have any songs/videos on it either.
    Thank you for reading.

Your iPhone's proximity sensor is not working, either because it has malfunctioned or you are using a case that blocks the sensor. If you have a case, remove it and try your phone.
Here are the sensors or the iPhone 3G/3GS.
Cases designed for the original iPhone will block these sensors.
