MBP Randomly Shutting Itself Off

Hey guys, I wanted to see if the community may be able to help me fix a problem my computer developed last week. At some point last week, I was lying in bed using my MBP when I accidentally knocked the backside against my knee. The computer then immediately went back, and wouldn't turn back on for a while. When it did turn back on, the fans were running in overdrive, but nothing happened on the screen. Realizing what had happened, I reset the SMC, and the computer turned back on and seemed to be working fine. Since then however, my computer has randomly shut itself off a number of times, seemingly for no reason. In addition, it will sometimes not recognize that the charger is plugged in at all. And after it does shut off randomly, booting up takes a very long time. Additionally, sometimes when closed and gone to sleep, waking it from sleep seems to initiate a system restore from last state, but then freezes halfway through the restore, and I'm forced to force shutdown, and restart. Is my laptop on its last legs? Or is my battery about to go, or what's the deal?
I own a 15" Mid 2010 MBP, 2.53 GHz Intel i5, 4GB memory, running Lion 10.7.5
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

My new MacBook Pro is doing the same thing and I just bought it 11-22-11.  I am new to mac, after years on a PC, and I have had mixed messages about whether to use the Mac plugged in once it is fully charged, or use it for hours on the batter and wait for it to run all the way down before charging.  When I am fully charged and I am going to be at if for a long time, I find that the screen will go black like it has shut off, keyboard goes black to.  Like the person before me asked, if I unplug the power cord from the Mac, the screen comes back.  Hmmmm.  Do I have a problem with the charger on my Mac?  Thanks for helping this Newbee too!

I have an Iphone 4 that will randomly shut itself off and then not come back on unless I preform a hard reset.  Also, it sometimes freezes up and needs to be reset in order for the device to begin working properly.  I have tried to back up and restore using itunes on my computer but I still have the issue.  Can someone shed some light on this issue for me and let me know how to correct it?  Thank you.  Randy.

Try to set it up as new device, this time without using the latest backup. If this does not work, contact Apple to get it checked.

  • Macbook Pro randomly shutting itself off?

Hi, my MacBook Pro keeps on randomly shutting itself down along with my charger (as in the light wont show anymore when plugged in). And when it does suddenly shut down, I can't turn my laptop back on unless I do the following: first I detach my charger from my laptop. Second I wait awhile or close my laptop and open it up again then I am able to turn it back on. The next thing I do is if I want my charger to actually work again (its not charging even though I attach it back to my laptop that is turning on), I must first unplug my charger from its outlet and re-plug it in, and that's how it will once again charge my laptop. I have no idea why this keeps on occurring, and it has occurred more often today then it ever had, so much so that I am compelled to ask help from the apple community. Please help me and tell me what should I do. Thank you.

  • IBook Shutting Itself off

OK, So about a week ago, my iBook G4 decided it wanted to randomly shut itself off. This only happens on battery power, and usually happens when there's about 20% left on the battery.
My concern is that the computer is overheating. I am led to believe this because the fan doesn't turn on even if the computer is getting quite hot (I've got a program on my dashboard that says my CPU reaches 62 degrees).
    Help??
    1. Can I test the battery?
    2. Can I test the fan?
    Thanks

    sdg,

What does "About This Mac - More Info - Power - Battery"
What does that say. Esp cycle count.
Also just talked about a similar problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8945664#8945664
my graphics processor (bottomside) and processor bottomside SMART disk both hit around 68C before the fan kicked in.
Wow that seems very high to me. What's the ambient? 54C??
I have 2 1.2 12" and a 14" 1.2 GHz and never seen the CPU temperature above 38C never in the 40s. The upper limit is like 83C.
I would check the vents on the back of the iBook and make sure they're clear. It would take a technician to check the installation of the heat sink, thermal pads (that they're actually there) and esp the mounting studs on the CPU as I have seen those fail.

  • Droid 2 shutting itself off

I'm on my third Droid in a little over a year (first two had the touchscreen stop working after 6 months).  My current phone is a refurbished Droid 2 that was a warranty replacement of the last Droid I had.  I've noticed that the Droid 2 will just suddenly and randomly shut itself off and restart.  There is no rhyme or reason to it.  I just checked an email in the GMAIL app (pre loaded on the phone) and it restarted itself.
This has happened on numerous occasions. It's getting a little tiresome. Anyone else have this problem?  Is there a solution? Or am I going to have to replace this phone as well?

It is not common for the phone to reset. We suggest removing a few applications at a time to verify you did not download a bad application. Then test the phone to see if it helps.
You can also reset the applications:
    1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab.
    2. Select Settings.
    3. Select Applications.
    4. Select Manage applications.
    5. Select the appropriate application.
    6. Select Force Close.
Also, you want to make sure your battery contacts are clean.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook shutting itself off. Genius bar supposedly fixed?

I have a macbook pro, I purchased in January, so not even a year old. A few months ago it strated acting strange with lines traveling across the screen sporadically, shutting itself off, and shutting down when I plug anything into the USB port. Then the other day it shut itself down and wouldn't restart. Went through all the stuff on the phone with the tech line and they determined I needed to take it in. So yesterday I drove the 120 miles to the nearest Apple store to have it looked at. Spent about 3 1/2 hours at the genius bar while they did whatever they do in the back, then wiped and reloaded everything on the computer. They ran their diagnostic after and said it's good to go and gave it back to me. This morning I turned it on and tried to plug my iphone in and it shut itself off again. Then after I restarted it, in the middle of doing some work it randomly shut itself off. I'm really getting irritated. What kind of junk is Apple selling people for $1500? I though macs were suppose to be good? This isn't good, it's junk. I'm looking for options as to how to make this think work right. I can't keep driving 120 miles both ways back and forth for Apple's incompetant people to do whatever they do, wipe and reload the entire machine, not bother fixing the problem, and hand it back to me like it's fine... Anyone have any good ideas?

  • IPhone constantly shuts itself off randomly after 3.1.2 upgrade

So I decided to upgrade my iPhone 3G to the newest software when it was first available and now, inconsistently, it has been shutting itself off.
All I would do is lock the phone, such as after sending a message, and place it in my pocket. When I check it again, I realize it will not turn on, and have to fully power on the thing.
Is this a normal problem? What can I do? Should I downgrade? Is that even possible?
I would just like my iPhone to work like it should, all help is appreciated greatly.

How can I set it as a new iPhone? The last time I reset all the settings and plugged in my phone, all of the information synced itself very quickly, I didnt have an option to restore as a backup or set up a new phone.
You seem to be confusing reseting the settings and restoring the phone. See this Apple support article - Restoring your iPhone... section. (This is also clearly described in the User Guide - bookmarked in iPhone Safari):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
I aslo recommend disabling automatic syncing when connecting your phone. This can be selected on your device summary page or set globally for all devices.
Preferences > Devices > Prevent iPhones and iPods from syncing automatically

  • Hp laserjet p1102w networked printer shuts itself off

Hi, I have a networked (not wireless network) printer, which is plugged into a computer that is always on. However, it shuts itself off randomly, even though I have set it to never do so. This means that users must walk over, turn the printer on, and occasionally restart their computers before they are able to print, which sometimes causes them to lose work. Occasionally the users will also receive a message like:
The printer spooler on the server was not responding
Which means someone must reset the server spooler before it will print.
I have also set it to go into power-save mode at the longest interval, one hour, but it frequently goes to sleep within minutes of a print-job, often sparking the above issues.
If there is anything that I can do further to keep from forcing the users to constantly turn it on, or to keep from having to restart the spooler every day, that would be great.
I am working with machines using Windows 7 and 8, and with a Windows Server 2012.

I got to this screen by going to the web interface by typing the printer's IP address into a web-browser's address bar.
Sorry for the delayed response. I will do my best to assist you when I get home.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.
When a solution is found please mark the post that solves your issue.

  • Battery Overheating, draining quickly and shutting itself off

The phone shuts itself off, at random times after I have locked the screen. I have replaced the sim card and SD card, didn't seem to make a difference. Now when the phone shuts off the phone (where battery is) is very hot to touch, and it does not hold charge well. Otherwise the phone runs fine (no app crashes or long loading times). Only had the phone for 3 days.

I have same problem and can't find a solution yet. Does your phone switch back on by itself about 2 seconds after switching off (while unplugged)?

  • MBP Suddenly Turns Itself Off With No Warning/OS 10.5.8

Recently my Early 2008 2.4 GhZ MBP running OS 10.5.8 has been shutting itself off without warning. Previously it would provide a warning when the battery hit 20% and then it would go to sleep at some point.
The Finder Menu Bar battery indicator shows around 23% or one hour of power remaining. Coconut Battery shows:
    Original Capacity: 5600 mAh
    Remaining: 3473 mAh
    Load-Cycles: 90
    Age: 23 months
This is a problem because data has been lost when this occurs. Any ideas about what may be happening? I still have around a year left on an extended AppleCare warranty...

The new battery hasn't been used long enough for me to tell; I only installed it last night.
My wife is the primary user of the affected MBP and she often uses it until it goes to sleep due to low power, so I anticipate having an answer in a week or two...
Can the fact that my wife often ran down the old battery to such a low level have contributed to the development of this problem? What I find curious is that previously the MBP would simply go to sleep when the battery power got too low. And that quite a few MBP users are suddenly complaining about their Macs turning-off by themselves even when using new batteries...

  • Satellite U400-14B shuts itself off and now it wont start up

    Hi
just got a new Satellite U400 this week.
Was working perfectly the first few days, then last night, it just shuts itself off and now it wont start up.
I press the on button and the row of lights next to it light up, but nothing happens I dont even get as far as the Toshiba screen.
I have tried many things. I left it plugged in overnight, tried taking the battery out and no result as of now.
The little led lights on the bottom indicate that there its plugged in, the battery is white not orange, when pressed they all light up again only for a split second.
The only thing I can liken this too is when a car wont start and you keep turning and turning the key, well in this case pushing a button, and nothing happens, the fans dont whir or anything...
    help please...

Has extra Memory (RAM) been installed? Try removing one Memory Module and try a different Memory Slot.
If bad memory is not the problem, then there is not much else you can do except send it to an ASP for warranty repairs.

How many of these you can answer...
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?
