MBP resolution stretched and over-scan on external display

Hey all, I started playing Portal 2 on my MBP, at a resolution of 1280x800--the game killed that resolution on my external forever since.
When I ran the game for the first time it appeared stretched on my 16:10 external monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 275t plus). In the game settings the resolution was initially set to 1024x768 and the aspect ratio to 4:3. When i corrected the aspect ratio and resolution everything went well until I exited the game. From that point on, whenever i run that monitor at 1280x800 from the MBP it is  stretched, over-scanned and ill positioned. Ever since initially running Portal 2 the external monitor has detected the resolution 1280x800 as 1024x768, but it is still able to detect and run other resolutions correctly.
I've tested the laptop with other external monitors at 1280x800 and it's able to drive them without issue.
I've tried...
...to reverse the steps to fix the problem, but haven't had any luck.
...to reset the monitor, through the OSD, holding the source button, and just plain unplugging it for a while.
...resetting the SMC and NVRam
...using 3rd party software like SwitchResX and DisplayConfigX, but neither of them even really allowed for any relevant options.
...trashing the com.apple.windowserver.plist files in [root]\library\preferences\ and [root]\users\[username]\library\preferences\byhost\
...forcing the EDID using the method described in this forum post (putting a custom DisplayProductID-xxx file in a DisplayVendorID-xxx directory in [root]\system\library\displays\overrides\) http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=208410
...modifying the standard timings and detailed timing blocks of the proper EDID and swapping it with the file from the last thing that I tried.
I am well and truly out of ideas. Your help is greatly appreciated.

whats the maximum resolution supported @ 60 Hz on an external display for mid 2014 macbook pro retina 13 inch ?

I don't know where you found 1920x1080, but that isn't the max. The INTERNAL display can even support more than that.
The maximum resolution is really hardware based, and since Thunderbolt 2 has a Mini displayport connector (Mini Displayport 1.2), the max resolution for Mini Displayport is 4k (3840x2160).
PLEASE NOTE: Not all adapters can support that resolution, most monitors that can run 4k @60Hz have Displayport 1.2 (The most recent revision), Mini Displayport 1.2, and HDMI 2.0. DVI dual link can run 4k, but only 24-30Hz, depending on the monitor.
    Hope this helps!!

  • MBP randomly crashes when in clamshell with external display

    Hi Mac people.
As described in the "subject field" i have been encountering some random crashes after i startet using my MBP in clamshell with my newly pruchased 24" 16:10 NEC display .
typically it occurs after about 10-20 minutes of playing world of warcraft.
-the screen goes black, saying no signal, and the MBP doesn't react to anything else but holding down the on/off button.
i have tried using the key combination alt-cmd-eject to see if i could make the computer sleep and then turn it on by opening the lid.-getting it out of clamshell to get the built-in display active again.
    but none of that worked.
i also checked the dvi<->mini-displayport adapter for lose connections but i didn't find any
i have had my NEC display for about a month, and the problem has occured about 8 times now.
befor i started using my MBP in clamshell with an external display, i had no problems.

Lets give it a try. 1st of all post your s/n (so I can run a check on your specific model) or check with system profiler if your machine has the NVidia Geforce 8600 M GT. Or see for yourself: http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi
    IF SO:
Surely, you've heard about the generic problems with this specific video chip: sooner or later most of them will fail due to chip packaging/bonding issues. If yours has not failed before, it may be doing so now because you're driving it harder with a larger external monitor attached, thus probably running the affected videochip hotter. Very useful link: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/MacBookProvideofailure.html#novideotip , loads of other useful links on the subject therein.
To solve this, Apple has instigated an extended warranty, so do not tread on the tail of your machine's capabilities any more. Once it will not boot (which may eventually happen), it gets really hard to run diagnostics. Have it checked by at least 1, preferably more ASPs (see link), and kindly ask them to reiterate the test 2 or 3 times. Often, the problem will not show up on the 1st try.
I am reading increasing numbers of questions and complaints about this on the Flemish/Belgian Apple forum "Intermactivity", most users seem to be unaware of the problem (though this has been common knowledge for years), and moreover, most ASPs are reluctant to acknowledge it.
So if your machine is one of the affected, you will really have to stand your case. Especially in Europe!

  • Display gray, but OS loads and is fine in external display.

    Hello there.
I'm having trouble with a PowerBook G4, where on starup
I hear the chime, but then the screen just goes gray. When
the external display is hooked up, after a while I will see
the OS loading screen. All seems normal on the external
display that I'm writing this on, but the screen on the PB is always gray. I tried doing verbose boot, but didn't see any text. I also can't seem to boot from the disc. I hold down option and the external turns blue, but it seems that it is
using it as an additional screen, and not mirroring. F7 didn't
seem to help in that case.
    Any Ideas?

    Hi,
Check that you have Color "LCD-4270800.icc" in /Library/ColorCync/Profiles/Displays ,
My was gone for some reason, I downloaded http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048updateppc.html an anfter installing it, that profile is now in System Preferences/Displays, my computer recognizes the display as a Color LCD not as a "VGA" display like it did before.

  • 10.4 and long waits configuring external displays

I have recently upgraded to 10.4.2. When I connect an external projector to my PB it takes at least 4 times longer than 10.3 for the PB to:
    1. detect the external display
    2. set the external display resolution
I am spending forever with "blue screens of wait" while the PB sorts itself out.
Anyone else had this experience? This delay is so bad I am considering going back to 10.3.

  • Why is my MBP serial number and model year no longer displayed in "about this mac" (have NOT replaced logic board)?

I have not replaced or manipulated the logic board (or any other hardware) on my mid-2012 13 inch MBP. Under the "about this mac" tab, the serial number is no longer displayed (it now states "unavailable") and the model year is also no longer displayed. I understand that I can find the serial number and model year several other ways, I am seeking to determine why this happened and if it could indicate further problems.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Thank you in advance for any help or insight.
    JB

Man oh man. What a day. New symptoms again!
Lets start with the MBP dying in its sleep. I closed my MBP and left it for a few hours to come back to find it completely dead. Looked into this issue and with the help of the activity monitor cleaned up some things, turned off some sharing settings, got rid of some extensions, etc. Seems to have solved this issue.
Later on, I picked up my MBP while it was on with my left hand and the same display (horizontal lines), freeze, auto shutdown happened. Out of curiosity I tried to recreate the symptom. Sure enough, pressing (with little force) on the left side of the bottom case caused it to happen again. I researched this a bit and found several possible culprits (bad logic board, metallic sticker may cause shorts, bad RAM bank, google drive). The google drive one really surprised me, I removed google drive (worked for many people) and it did not fix the issue. A buddy had some good RAM for me to use today so I swapped it out and had the same issue. Decided to test the individual RAM banks and it turns out that the deepest bank must be faulty. Running with only one 4 gig stick in the outermost bank and the freeze, shutdown, beep issue is gone!
So, it seems I have fixed the dying in sleep problem and have a temporary work-around for the bad RAM bank. The SN issue remains.
I am going to try to find out what could make a RAM bank be faulty and if there is a way to repair it.
What are the chances that all this happens as soon as I try to find out why the SN is unavailable??
Below is the thread that I found interesting and useful.

  • Tiger and using FrontRow On External Display

Looking for a way to use FrontRow so that it comes up on my TV. So far the only easy way I have come up with is to use Mirror mode, but that does not support the native display or settings of my TV like it does when spanning. I tried TVRow but that requires Leopard. Before I start mucking around with Terminal, I want to make sure that is not a Leopard only solution. I would prefer a TVRow-type solution, or a simple script. I do not want to move my entire desktop to the second screen either by moving the menu bar to the ext. display.
Is there a way to permanently edit FrontRow preferences? Sine I only use Front Row on my external monitor, that would be the easiest way to fix this. Whatever settings TVRow temporarily changes, a permanent change would work for me. I especially like the idea of HD trailers in Front Row ...

Yes, Woodwyn already mentioned that in the original post.
I should have been more clear in my post. I was suggesting that there might be a settings file for Front Row even in Tiger that could be modified directly, without using TV Row. It seemed to me that the most expedient way to get an answer about Tiger would be for Woodwyn to contact the TV Row author directly, who might have a little better idea than we do.
It might be impossible for Front Row itself to output on a non-primary monitor under Tiger, but that isn't a TV Row issue.

  • Lots of red dots on MBP 2010 internal and external display

    Hi all,
    Anyone's got any suggestions?
Over the last months there's been an increasing number of red dots all over the display (both MBP's own display and when connected to external display). The dots appear on different places (not static dead pixels) and especially where darker graphics appear (when playing games or just watching pictures or editing pictures, for instance). Especially playing games is impossible because of this graphics distortion. However, the degree of the problem varies.
Is this a hardware or software problem? I haven't had any problems with Apple hardware before.
    Best,
    Thomas

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't had the opportunity to test on a different OS / boot, but I did try to change the energy saving settings as advised, but the problem persists.
Is it possible to attach an image file (screenshot of the issue) here?

  • How to change external display resolution WITHOUT clicking "CONFIRM"?

I have a somewhat unusual situation. My MacBook laptop is actually now a ModBook (a pen-tablet computer), and as such I no longer have a trackpad attached to it. All of my inputs are via the stylus, tapping directly on the built-in display.
This works perfectly fine, except when I need to give presentations on an LCD projector (which is quite often lately). I like to use the projector as an external monitor, so that I can run the Keynote presentation on it while using my laptop screen as the presenter's display, with the upcoming slide, etc. If the projector doesn't give me an ideal native display option (sometimes, the aspect ratio for the  3 or 4 resolutions available in the Displays drop-down in the menubar turn out to be stretched or squeezed), then I, naturally, have to open the Display System Preferences and try out different resolutions.
The problem is, since my stylus only interacts by clicking directly on the built-in-display, I have no way of moving the cursor over to the external display when the dialog box with the "Click here to confirm change/You have 15 seconds..." message appears. So I can never click it ... so I can never confirm the new settings.
The workarounds I've used so far are:
    - Mirror displays (not ideal, as I need the presenter preview of the next slide)
    - borrow a mouse from someone (usually from a Windows desktop, frankly) and plug that in to briefly mouse over and click the confirm button
I'd love to find a software workaround that allows me to NOT mirror displays and also doesn't require me to carry around a mouse all the time (my laptop bag is already overstuffed...).
    Thanks.

  • Maximum Thunderbolt/VGA resolution for external displays?

    Hi there
Until recently, I've been using a Macbook Air Core 2 Duo with a MiniDisplayPort output. This is connected via the Apple MiniDisplayPort > VGA adaptor to an LG Flatron W2246 22" display, and running 1920x1080 quite happily.
I recently bought the Macbook Pro 15" quad core i7 with the Intel HD 3000 and AMD Radeon 6490M - a much more powerful machine with a much more powerful graphics card.
However, it only seems to allow me a maximum resolution of 1600x1200 on the Thunderbolt external display port - it won't give me an option for 1080p.
Any ideas? It seems strange that the Macbook Air will give me higher resultions!
    Thanks

I had similar issues to Jason with the technical documentation. It was clear on the maximum resolutions for the laptop's screen and the max resolution on an external monitor, and the max for single and dual link DVI on the adapter pages, but vague on VGA.
I suspected it should work since I have a PC laptop with a graphics card that is a generation behind that can do the full res of my monitor over VGA, but thank you BSteely for confirming this.

I have a shiny new external display and i'd like to assign a particular space to it - is this possible? otherwise all i end up with is a duplicate of what i have on my MB Pro screen or I have to disable spaces.
    any clues fellow mac fans?

This is what I found works for me. Some programs work fine for this method others don't. I first go in and set all the apps in spaces preferences to the corresponding space they belong to. This gets them to the basic location I want. I usually use two apps together on the two screens such as Bridge and photoshop. Open the application you want to use on the external monitor. It should open on the correct space assigned to it initially.
Now you choose the spaces icon on the dock. This brings up all your spaces with the corresponding external monitor space next to it. Drag the application from the internal space screen to the external space screen. Now choose the app you just moved. This will take you to the correct space and app window. Close the app. When you open the app again it should open with its window in the external monitor. The applications menu bar stays on the main monitor but the window is where you placed it.
As I said this works for most apps but not all. You will find out which ones don't quickly. Then just open them and once you get to the app window drag it over to your external display.
I usually start all my apps I will be working on and arrange them like I want fixing the ones that don't start on the correct display. Then it is easy to change spaces and have my work area ready to go.
One thing I discovered in Pages is if I close a file that is displayed on the external monitor the same file when opened again will show up on that monitor. Comes in handy if you work on multiple documents. You just save the file on the window you want it to appear in the next time you need it.

  • 30-40x processes called "unar" eats up harddrive, memory and processor when TV is connected as external display. What is this and how do I get rid of it?

What is this process and why does it eat up all my hard drive space, memory and processor every time external display is connected? If I have the display connected for long enough, it could easily eat up 60-70 gigs of my hard drive.

Somehow we need to identify what this "unar" process is.
Are you sure that this UnrarX is not in your login items ?? (the things to be automatically started at login)
Perhaps removing any login startup items would help in isolating the problem
As far as I find out, there's no easy way.
There is the source of simple program that will tell you the path to a process from it PID. That's certainly not very elegant but you can find it here.
Looking at your screen shot it would appear (just looking at the indentation) that the "unar" processes are not running as a sub-process of some other process like launchd, sh, Terminal, or something else.
If that's not the case then a important piece of information would be the parent process.
In the screenshot of a fragment of Activity Monitor below, bash is a sub process of login which is a sub process of Terminal. This structure only shows up if you sleected "all Processes, Hierarchically"
It would be useful to look at all the views of processes available in Activity Monitor.
By identifying in which views it shows up we can learn if it is a:
    System process
    one of My processes
    other User Process
    Windowed process
    etc
This will help us in knowing where to look for "unar" and perhaps to figure out what it is, and why it keeps showing up

  • Display problems when connecting Samsung external display to Macbook Alu

    Here is the deal:
    1. I got a new Macbook Aluminum (yesss!)
    2. I got a sweet 23" Samsung LCD display (2048 x 1152)
    3. I got a DVI to Mini Display Port adapter
    4. I hooked the two up
    5. At first couldn't get a resolution higher than 640 x 480
    6. Figured it out
    7. After the Macbook went to sleep I tried to wake it up using my BT keyboard
    8. Screen came up with static/noise and then flashed the desktop off and on
    9. Unplugged display, opened Macbook to wake it up
    10. Macbook won't wake up. Caps lock key lights up, but that is it.
    11. Force shutdown and reboot
    12. External display works again, until later when Macbook falls asleep
    13. Here we go again
Yes I have downloaded the latest update. I have reset the PRAM, etc. with the help of an Apple support agent. So far, the problem remains.
Does anyone have any ideas? Any solutions other than me having to drive me lazy butt over the hill and taking 3 hours out of my day to have a Apple Genius look at my Macbook?

Don't bother bringing it to an Apple store and wasting your time. I'm pretty sure your problem is a known issue with the software and not hardware. I suggest you get a hold of Apple over the phone, make sure you talk to a "product expert" and not a general rep and I'm sure he'll clarify it with you.

  • Driving external display

I've been using my Macbook Pro with the external display (apple 23' cinema display). As recommended, I'd start the macbook pro, then close the cover, connect the display and press a button on an external keyboard. This will wake the computer up, and the display will start working.
However, as soon as I installed 10.5.2 (or possibly Leopard Graphics Update), this stopped working. The display lights up for a second and then goes dark and the computer goes back to sleep. The only way to use it is by keeping the laptop lid open and then connecting the external display. Then the external monitor works just fine, but the computer's lid is open and its display is also on.
    Does anyone experience anything similar?

There seem to be a lot of problems with using an external display with an MBP. I'm a recent switcher, and have been delighted with the system and OSX, but this seems to be a weak point.
My system came with 10.4, and it had similar problems. I wanted to use the external display with the lid closed, and eventually found a KB article which describes the specific sequence needed to enable that to work:
    1. Boot system with display disconnected.
    2. Connect external display, external keyboard & mouse, etc. Let them enumerate.
    3. Close the lid. The system will go to sleep at this point.
    4. After the system is sleeping, wake it up using the external keyboard or mouse.
At this point, the external display should become active.
Then I upgraded to 10.5. Now I have several problems.
    1. Sometimes after using the external display, when the system wakes up without the external display connected, the laptop display is blank. It appears that the system thinks the external display is still connected, and isn't enabling the laptop display, even though the lid is open. I'm guessing that selecting 'detect displays' would work, but since the display isn't active, I don't know how I would select that Force reboot using the power button is the only recourse I can think of, but I really hate doing that. Any other ideas?
    2. This one happens more often, and is quite annoying. If I have the external display connected when I boot up or wake up the system, about half the time the external display takes on the same lower resolution as the laptop display. The higher resolution mode isn't even listed in the display properties menu, nor does selecting "Detect displays" have any effect. My only recourse is to disconnect the display, then reboot, and reconnect the display after rebooting. This always fixes the problem, but of course is a big inconvenience. Any ideas?
