MBP restarts itself on its own

I own a MBP 3.1, with 10.6.7 installed.
Now and then, especially when it's under load (switching to Safari while a movie is running), the MBP restarts the OS and goes back to the login screen. It doesn't reboot, but all unsaved data is lost. No sign of problems on the logs, doesn't even log the reset.
What do you think might be the problem?
Thanks in advance!

If you bought a new iPhone, it is covered under warranty.  There's nothing to get, it simply is covered.
To check the warranty and support coverage, go here and enter the device serial number.

  • Mac OS restarts itself on its own

2 weeks ago my mac OS has begun to restart itself very often (every 1.5-2 hours or sometime even more often) on its own. If i don't have any word or excel doc opened, Max OS fails to restart as it stops at the moment it asks to save such document.
I also have a mac book pro 13 inch (besides MacBook Air) which runs OS 10.5.8 and it now experiences the same problem. Both macs are sync through Mobileme.
Please, advise how to fix this bug.
    Thanks!

Reinstall OS X and start doing some basic maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)

  • I have a iPhone 4 that will not stop resetting itself on its own this is my fourth phone and the second to have this problem

I have a iPhone 4 that will not stop resetting itself on its own this is my fourth phone and the second to have this problem. I have AT&T so I need to post here instead of actually being held to get help on a Sunday night. this is a extremely frustrating situation as I count on this phone for business.

Are you restoring your phone from a previous back up? If so there could be a problem within the back up. Try restoring your phone as a new device and then manualy reinstall all apps.

  • My Ipad keeps rebooting itself on its own

My Ipad 3 just started rebooting itself on its own.  I had the computer powered off and locked and then turned it on.  It came on and then within 30 seconds shut itself down, only to reboot itself without me touching it.  I am using 7.1.1, I am using AT &T as the carrier.
I have tried to reboot it holding down the on/off button and the home button at the same time as someone suggested that.

I Must be missing the significance of the computer is this discussion.
You could try restoring the device with iTunes on your computer.

  • MBP restarting itself lately

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro (2011, 15”, 2 ghz/8 gb ram/10.10.2) has been restarting itself lately, 3x in the past 3 days. I though Safari might be causing it but today, it happened as Picassa was looking through a new folder I let it look at. That gave me a grey screen telling me there was a problem. The other restarts just went to a black screen and restarted. NONE brought up the Crash Reporter on restart. (I’ve found that to be flakey over the years…)
Where should I start in trying to remedy this. I did do an Apple Hardware test a few days ago, on the net, and it didn’t find any problems using the short exam.
I’d be happy to share a log but don’t know which one. I can zap the P-Ram if you think that’s a good idea. Maybe I need to reset the SMC?
    Many thanks for any help.
    Cheers,
    John L

I'm not seeing how I can delete the rpcsvhost. I can keep quitting it but I have a feeling it won't come back. It's only appeared after each time I've replaced the RAM. Never seen it before that, though I did trash CleanMyMac a day or so ago and I've seen that it has been connected to that. (I didn't uninstall CMM. Maybe I'll need to do that...)
I haven't zapped the P-Ram. I'm hoping the recall will fix things. I've fixed permissions - the latest had lots needing fixing, one from an Apple update of an Epson printer! I've also verified the drive and it's ok. In January "the volume was found to be corrupt" and I repaired it. ("Incorrect number of files had links"(?) and "volume bitmap needs repairs" are all I can read of my bad handwriting in my notes...)
I've EtreCheck a few times and am wondering about a few kernel extensions but it didn't think anything was wrong. Some are from apps I've used for years with no problems and are all up to date. One was from an app I don't have anymore (ScreenFlow - the net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio.)
One highlighted in red for the first time just now:

  • Why does my MBP restart itself randomly several times a day? Something about a "Panic Report".

Ok so my MacBook Pro shuts itself down and restarts at least 4 times a day. Usually this happens when im away from my computer and its been idle or sleeping or whatever it does, however just 30 minutes ago this happened while i was using it and then it wouldnt restart it just kept showing the loading "apple" logo with loading bars comntinuously spinning... I had to shut it down manually and then it took an extra long time to load before finally loading to the user login page. Now generally... upon start up after this "panic" i will recieve a"Panic report" that says something aloong the lines of...

What the HECK is happening and whats causing this???? How do i fix it?

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • File association reverting itself on its own

I have been unable to change the file association for .bib files. I would like to open all of these with JabRef (default is texmaker). I selected one, did cmd-I, went to the "open with" tab, looked for JabRef, selected "all applications" from the drop-down menu (JabRef is not a "recommended application"), selected JabRef. I then pressed the button "Change all" to change all of the .bib files and the file association reverted itself to texmaker!
What could be the reason for this behaviour? I made sure that the file was unlocked before trying to change its association after it failed the first time, but b/c I did not know what else to do, in fact it seems irrelevant. Any suggestions?

Could be a hosed LaunchServices database. Best thing to do is reset it. Launch the Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities/, paste in the below command, hit the return key, quit the app, and restart.
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
I did it, but there is no effect. Just to make sure, what is that you mean exactly by quit the app? Quit the Terminal? In any case thanks a lot for the suggestion.
Besides, I have circumvented the problem by associating bib files with BibDesk, although it is a bit annoying that the file association seems to ahve a glitch.

  • MBP restarts on it's own at least twice a day. Very annoying. Please help.

here's the log please let me know if there's anything else I can post to help find a solution to this problem. I was at apple today and I saw the "genius" pull up a screen that showed what app or thing that was causing my mbp to crash each time but I don't know what it was or where to find that page. Apple already whiped my computer but when they put some of my stuff back on using a hard drive the problem came back on as well.

    Process:         SIMBL Agent [172]
    Path:            /Library/ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax/Contents/Resources/SIMBL Agent.app/Contents/MacOS/SIMBL Agent
    Identifier:      net.culater.SIMBL_Agent
    Version:         0.9.9 (0.9.9)
    Code Type:       X86-64 (Native)
    Parent Process:  launchd [125]
    User ID:         501
The problem is your installation of SIMBL and whatever third-party software that uses it. See what happens if you remove the SIMBL software and the software that uses it.
Do you have any timers running to boot the computer at certain times of day? If you are going to reinstall your system cleanly, then here is how it's done:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Now you should be careful about reinstalling third-party software being sure to do one at a time so you can discover which one may be causing the problem. It will take some time.
In the future please don't post crash logs unless asked to. They take up a lot of room and most of us really don't know what to do with them.

  • Flash uninstalls itself on its own

I have 1 computer that keeps uninstalling Flash.  The PC is Win XP SP3 32bit running IE8.  I thought it might have been McAfee but there is nothing in the logs saying McAfee thinks its a virus or spyware.  Add/Remove programs does not list Flash but the Flash icon in the Control Panel is still there.  This happens randomly, sometimes once a week, sometimes once every other week.  Any thoughts or input on this would be great.  Thanks

Here is the log, I wanted to wait until it removed itself again, which it did this morning.  I'm having this issue on 2 PCs and I spoke with those users.  They both got an update message and ran it.  After they ran it, Flash is not there.  We do not allow our users to have admin rights, so what I'm thinking is that somehow the update process is removing the older version, then when it tries to install, it can't.  Here's the contents of the log from today.

  • Unibody MBP Developing Blemishes On Its Own!!!

I clean off the entire body before turning the machine off. Last night there was absolutely no aluminum blemishes on the palm rest. This morning, when I opened it up it has a small lightly coloured circular blemish right below the keyboard.
I've tried cleaning it off with water, monster cleaner, and rubbing at it... doesn't seem to be helping at all. This is driving me crazy. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a way to clean it? I'm 100% sure I did not make this mark which makes it all the more confusing. It was sitting in a Sleeve for the last 12 hours.

Sorry to hear about your blemish. I suggest you DO NOT use anything acidic in attempt to remove it, as aluminium is a reactive metal (for the same reason you shouldn't cook tomato sauce in an aluminium saucepan). Try to find a specific aluminium polish and see if that works.
On the other hand you could always accept the blemish as your first (of potentially many) scars. A computer is a tool to serve a specific function after all, and it can't do that if you encase it in glass (so to speak) only to look at it admiringly. Anything well-used will show signs of wear sooner or later and after the trauma of the first blemish it will get easier and easier for you.
Whilst I take reasonable care of my belongings, my previous laptop, a PowerBook G4 12" bought the day they came out in January 2003, has been dropped, squeezed, squashed and otherwise pillaged travelling around the work with me in various types of luggage, as well as enduring London public transit and regular chauffeuring in my motorcycle's topbox. Total carnage: 1 failed hard drive in 2005. The unit still works as well today as the day I bought it—its final mission before being retired was playing full screen 25fps video through a projector for a public work event—no frames skipped.
So ask yourself if you bought your laptop to make a fashion statement or to get work done on it and don't sweat a small blemish—you will get over the trauma.

  • MBP Screen cracked 'on its own'..

    Quite literally.
Bare in mind this happened well over a year ago, in March, and apple continue to dismiss me. I kind of understand, they can't prove I didn't drop it, however even so, I am curious as to why on earth this could have happened.
    MBP is a Mid 2012, 13" 2.5Ghz.
I was using it on a wooden table. It was wearing a speck hardcover case bought from the apple store.
It was getting fairly hot, enough for me to be uncomfortable resting my wrists on it, but not enough for it to power off. Was running a little slow. A small, thin crack appeared on the black frame, on the left hand side of the screen. I turned the MBP off, leaving it open, and the following day the screen had continued and now ran around the right hand top & bottom side of the black frame and running through diagonally into the middle of the screen.
The only things I have found from meticulous searching online are that perhaps the bezel is a touch too tight?
I looked after my MBP, wore a case and I don't touch the screen.
Any idea's how on earth this could have happened?

There is more than just the bezel being too tight...you said the MBP was in a hardcover case, and was getting very hot.  The hardcover case was acting as an insulator retaining the heat generated by the MBP.  The MBP aluminum case is the major part of the heat sink for the internals, especially the processor.  If the heat is not removed, the entire unit heats up, as you note, which causes thermal expansion.  ALL things expand when they heat up and contract when they cool down.
And, all things expand at different rates when they heat up.  So, the MBP heats up, the different pieces, the case, the screen, expand at different rates.  If the screen heats and expands more than the case restraining it, the stresses in the glass will buildup.  At some point the stress has to be relieved.  Either by increasing the cooling, shutting down to stop heat production, or by cracking.  Your screen sounds like it relieved the buildup stresses by breaking.
That is why Apple is probably taking so long to resolve this...it cannot be proven you dropped/damaged the MBP, but by retraining the expansion of the screen with a hardcover case Apple is not likely to feel they are responsible.  They should have, however, warned the consumer that the case requires different usage patterns so the MBP does not get so hot.
    Just some thoughts.

  • Droid mini shuts down on its own

Since updating Android about a week ago, my droid mini has shut down on its own at random times. Pressing the power button won't start it up either. I have to continually press for over a minute before the phone powers up. Battery is over 70% so that shouldn't be the issue.
Thanks for any ideas on how to cure this!

I would suggest trying running the device in safe mode. There may be one of your 3rd party apps that are interfering somehow with the proper functioning of your device, and safe mode will disable them for diagnostic purposes. If running safe mode improves the phone's performance, one of a couple things may happen. Your phone may "fix itself", correcting its own glitch now that there is no interference from a problem app, or it may just run better while in safe mode. You'll have to restart again as normal to determine which one it is. If it goes back to glitching, then you will need to go back into safe mode, remove all 3rd party apps, and then add them again one by one to determine which one was the problem.

  • IPhone 4 shuts down on its own all the time. Sometimes restarts without ability to make calls, receive emails, and the wrong time.  Only a restore fixes it.  What can I try?

So my iPhone had a broken screen and back for a while, which may have something to do with this.  I mean like missing peices.  I realize this leads to corrosion and I may have a broken iPhone but this is a really strange problem.  It's always shutting off on its own, sometimes in my pocket while locked and sometimes randomly while in use.   For example the other day this started happening everytime I started safari.  This happens all the time, I usually just restart it and it works for a while.   Sometimes after shutting off a few times in a row, after restarting it will show the wrong time, screws up phone calls and says that it cannot locate the gmail server, or something to that extent (won't load emails).   The phone calls are weird, I can't receive any.   Any calls that are made from the phone, go through on the other side and ring for them, but won't ring or make a connection on my side, also I can't end the call when this happens, it responds to me pressing end by fading the screen to that graytone color that it does before ending usually but stays on that screen whenever you go back to it, only disappearing after reseting.  Texts work, not in iMessage, and internet seems to work.   The only thing that fixes this condition is a restore. The iphone has been turning itself off over the last 3 months and its been getting progressively worse.  Recently its been pretty bad, and then the phone started to do all that weird stuff I've been talking about.  That started about 3 weeks ago and has happened 4 times, the last two times relatively close together.   This is really annoying and I can't afford to replace it.   Do I have to live with it?   What can I try?  Should I maybe replace the battery?  I took the panel off to look at it and the plastic around it was pitted possibly from being really hot.

Please don't respond with useless comments.  I've already addressed the fact that my screen was broken a few months ago.  My phone may or may not be broken beyond repair either way, as I said before I can't afford a new phone.  It's a strange problem because from what I can tell no one else has posted the same problem anywhere I can find.  Don't be a dickhole.
