MBP Retina 13" Display Problems

Hi,
I have a new 13" MBP Retina (late 2013).
I'm seeing random visual artefacts on the screen:
- Occasionally I see lines flashing across the screen
- Text wobbling in Finder when opening and closing folders
Has anyone else seen these types of problem?
I'm still within the 14 day return period, and I'm considering taking the MBP back.
Regards
Darren.

thanks! yeah i recorded it so i hope they will take the problem more seriously.
Unfortunately i don't have an applecare protection plan, but i hope that the proof that i've been in an apple store for the same issue already in april will help me somehow.
I also think that when i touch with my hand both chassis and display i make some connection working again. Maybe i'm the radioactive man, or i have some special powers...or for the first time time in my life i bought a bugged apple product. But i think is more possible one of the first two options!

My mbp retina 2013 display went black suddenly. Anyone else having this problem?

Hi, I have the same computer, same model and same problem with the same diagnosis, with no response from Apple for being out of warranty of 4 years, this is a shame!

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2013 - Display Problems in iTunes

I just got my new MacBook Pro 13" Retina a few days ago from the Apple Online Store - there was the problem that the display flickered in itunes everytime when i started up a movie or in the iTunes Store the trailer of movies / and tv shows. Otherwise if i stopped the video in the full screen mode and gone back with esc to the itunes store there came up for few seconds the last pictures of the played movie.
I called to apple and they sent me a new one with (i cannot believe) the really same issue ...... now my question - has anybody of you the same problem or can help me and look it up if there's the same in itunes with that model -  I am not sure if its a software problem or a hardware issue with for example the graphics

Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with your computer. I have the same issue, and it is a bug. Sometimes a restart solves it. Sometimes and if you use subtitles, you will see the first line being displayed but the second one not, etc.
I have reported that to Apple and there is hope for a fix.

  • MBP Retina 15 display resolution issue on Windows7 and Bootcamp 5.0

i  have macbook pro retina 15 that i bought in jan 2013 and i have just installed windows 7 on it. I have then installed bootcamp 5.0 from apple.com for drivers. But my display driver is shown as "generic non-PnP monitor on standard VGA Graphics Adaptor. The maximum resolution that i am getting is 1600*1200. I have tried to repair bootcamp installation but the display is still same and its not as crisp as it should be.
I have searched everywhere on google and youtube but cant find any answer. Can any one please let me know how to fix it.

I did checked the option in bootcamp during win install "Download windows support software" but my MBP got stuck while downloading win support software.. i waited for more than 3 hours but it never moved ahead after 50 odd %. So i tried again with unchecking this option and once win were installed i downloaded bootcamp 5.0 and installed it but my display was not detected.
Have you restarted Windows since installing, if not try it.

  • MBP Retina bad display on external Dell display

My MBPr LCD display is great: crisp and clear.
However, when I connect my desktop Dell display, the result is washed out and difficult to read fonts.
I've tried with both mini-DVI and mini-VGA.   The mini-VGA is perhaps marginally better, but in both
    cases is borderline unusable.
    Any clues?
    Thanks!

I've a 2011 MBA, 2008 MBP and a Dell U2410 24" 1920x1200-native setup with zero problems, until I replace the aging MBP with rMBP. Now I get the same issue as the OP.
I've searched extensively, but "blurry images, washed-out colors, smudgy text" isn't very scientific/concrete so it's not easy to have a clear-cut case. On this same issue (I believe), I've found the following threads:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4119545
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15565120
I'm trying to document the issue as much as possible, with photos taken off the display. (I've found screen capture doesn't work). They're posted at http://goo.gl/XLdMf
    Further background
The same mini-DP to DP cable is used to connect MBA, rMBP (and my previous 2008 MBP) and have been in service since I've the Dell. No issues at all, except the rMBP.
I've tried HDMI-HDMI from rMBP to Dell. Same lousy display quality.
The Dell U2410 accepts DP, HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs.
On the monitor itself, I can press a few buttons to ask for display info. In both cases, the Dell reports it is displaying in 1920x1200 @ 60Hz. (So this rules out the problem of trying to display 1920x1080 on a 1920x1200 native display).
I've done a Factory Reset on the Dell, to no avail.
    When the MacBookAir4,2 (2011 MBA) is connected, a range of resolutions is available:1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 1920x1200x 1600x1200, 1600x1000, 1344x1008, 1344x840, 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1280x800, 1024x768, 1024x640, 960x600, 800x600, 800x500, 720x576, 640x480
    When MacBookPro10,1 (rMBP) is connected, only 3 choices present itself:1920x1200, 1600x1000, 1280x800
Comparing the 2 Colors tab photos, notice how, when the rMBP is connected, the fonts have a white shadow all around the black fonts.
Comparing the 2 Display tab photos, look at the "1920" in the selected "1920x1200" option. Notice how, when the rMBP is connected, the bottom of the "1", "9", "2", "0" are smudged together

  • MBP Retina video streaming problems

Does anyone else have video problems anytime they stream a video online? This has persisted for awhile. I assumed it had to do with OSX Maverick, so I gave it about 6-12 months to allow any patches/updates to remedy. I would assume it is a GPU issue or possible RAM.
Also playing locally from my SSD or even an external does not give me any issues. If I stream, however,  I get a glitchy, striping across my screen. Sometimes it is vertical; other horizontal. Sometimes it will last just a few seconds and pass. Other times, I have to put the laptop into hibernate and then log back in. When it happens 2-3 times in a 5 minute YouTube video, that gets really frustrating.
Lastly, this is not isolated to YouTube, but any online video streaming. Hulu, netflix, news sites, etc.
Here are some examples of how it looks:

I have been charting it recently, and I think it may be due to heat. I noticed that it reaches temperatures upwards of 80ºC. Even when rendering video that seems a bit high. I am going to download a fan control app, and set them to kick in earlier and see if that helps or at least mitigates the issue.

  • MBP w/Retina Display Problem After Sleep

I have bought a MBP Retina Display 15" in July 2012 and until recently I did not have any problems with my Mac. However, I am having the same problem as the one in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt0tS8KJKuQ
There seems to be no problem if I don't leave my mac on sleep for so long but what is the sleep function and power nap for in the first place. Is there any solution to this.
    Thx

Hardware does fail occasionally, but part of why I would take mine to an Apple Store would be for an opinion on whether the problem was hareware or software. Since it has been less than a year since your bought your MBP-R, it is still under warranty, just not eligible for free phone assistance. If you have neither an Apple Store nor a trusted repair facility available to you, that will make it tougher.
Do I understand you to say this only happens after it has been asleep for a longish time? You can keep it from happening by waking it up sooner or by shutting down when you expect to be away for a longer time? I'm not sure what that tells us, but it in interesting.
Do you by any chance have a bootable copy of your system on an external disk? Preferrably one that was made before you started experiencing the symptoms. If so, does the MBP-R present the same symptoms when booted from that copy?

  • MBP 13 retina late 2012 - display problems with wifi

    Hello!
I writing you about a problem i'm having since i bought my MBP retina in October 2012 but now that i'm in Russia is really worring me. I've been in a Genius Bar back at home in Italy but i couldn't show them the problem with the display because it was very occasionally and it never happened while i was in the apple shop. The apple genius run a kind of testing program and apparently my mac is ok. Now i also know that this problem happens only when the wifi is on. The display is flicking ( i hope this is the correct word) and actually it was just rarely in italy but since i'm in russia i can't use my mac while i'm connected because this problem is constant and much much stroger.
I noticed that the only way to stop this problem is to make a bridge with my finger from the alluminium chassis of the mbp to the black part at the bottom of the display. If i do this the flickering stops. So i'm somehow thinking it is an electric problem, and maybe in russia there is a different tension in the electricity or something else that makes this problem bigger.
I will also traveling for the next 5 months and so i can't bring my laptop to an apple store in italy. I don't know if i can bring it to another apple store around the world to fix the problem, and i don't know if i will have a 2 years warranty like i have in italy.
I'm very angry with the genius i've been in italy because he didn't believe my problem and he didn't investigate further. I was there in April or May and i still had the first year warranty. Now i'm traveling for the next 5 months and i super need my mac because i'm a travel blogger and as u can understand it is very important for me.
I hope someone can help me.
    Thank you
    Dan

  • Contacted by Apple for potential MBP retina display problem

I'm using MBP retina for exactly two weeks (received 7/27).
I was unable to get a call, but recieved a voice message from Apple regarding possible MPB retina display problem.
Is there anyone who got this call from Apple?
I dont' feel any problem on display, but wondering what could be problems.
    Thanks.

Could you be more detailed about the message? Apple doesn't usually do that.

  • MBP retina display wallpaper problem

I just bought the MBP retina display and somehow the OS doesn't save my wallpaper. It will go to the default Mac wallpaper whenever i restart my computer. Is there a way to solve this?

Alright no worries, I felt it was worth while looking at, although the unit is 4 days old in your hands, the software was likely installed longer than that, at the distribution centre.
The next step we would likely do, is remove the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the desktop itself, this will encourage the operating system when restarted (or logged out) to regenerate a new file in its place.
Although this is such an evasive step, and should cause no problems, since it is a user specific file, I do feel the need to tell you to backup any data first, and make sure you have everything covered before proceeding.
I would expect nothing to go wrong in this process, honestly , but whenever a solution comes down to replacing files the operating system has in place, its worth covering.  If you are satisfied you have everything backed up, and wish to proceed,  the next steps are as follows:
    1) Open up a finder window, you can do this by clicking the square face symbol on your dock (half dark blue, half light blue).  You should have a finder menu bar running across the top of your screen, and 'Go' should be listed.
    2) Select 'Go' and this will drop down a list of places your system can go to.  Hold down the Option (alt) key on your keyboard and this will show the hidden 'library' in your drop down list. Select library.
    3) The finder window will now show the contents of your user library.  Find a folder called preferences in that folder and go into it.
    4) You will now see many com.apple.xxxx.plist files.  Find a file or files beginning in com.apple.desktop (com.apple.desktop.plist is the common one, but sometimes there is com.apple.desktop lockfiles also) and drag them to the desktop itself, make sure the files are actually moved to the desktop and not just copied.
    5) Once the files are moved to the desktop, and no longer exist in your preferences folder, restart the computer, and try again.  The computer at this point would have generated replacement files.

  • Problem with MBP Retina Display battery

So, I'm on my second MBP Retina Display. The first one had a dead pixel. However, other than the dead pixel I was pleased with the laptops condition.
I got it replaced. The new model seems to be having issues with burned in windows on the display. Also, the battery life seems to go down much quicker than
    the one I had originaly.
I took my laptop into the genius bar and was told the battery was completely fine but because I used migration assistant something was draining the battery life.
A month has gone by since I cleaned out my laptop and didn't use migration assistant. The battery had been lasting longer than before. But now it's draining rather rapidly again. I don't know why.
Also, I hadn't noticed the burn in's until now.
Can someone tell me if there is a way to fix these issues? Or if I should take my laptop in again?
    Thanks for the help!

    0. Forget coconutBattery.
    1. Doesn't seem like a lot.
    2. Recommended? No. Can it hurt? No, as long as you stick to 3.
    3. It is better to discharge, at least a few times per month, to about 40%.

  • Having problems with my new usb superdrive in my MBP retina display.

I just bought an apple usb superdrive for my new MBP retina display. I connected the usb superdrive to the MBP and I was going to install a program but doesn't appear in the desktop or neither in finder. The disk is still inside the usb superdrive! The MBP doesn't recognize the usb superdrive. What do I do now? The disk is still inside!

With the system turned on Disconnect the superdrive and then reconnect it. If that fails try the other USB port, the one on the other side.
If That Fails take the system and the superdrive to the Apple store you bought them from and have them fix whatever is wrong with either the drive or the system or both.

  • MBP Retina shows wrong resolution on external display since 10.8.4

I have a MBP retina and I'm using it with an external display, Dell U2711, connected via a Mini-DP to DP cable. It all worked amazingly well until 10.8.4 came out. Now, when I connect the display, it no longer shows the correct 2560 X 1440 resolution, but shows 1080p. The displays preferences pane does not allow going over 1080p. It does recognize the display model, though.
It started with one port. The machine has two TB ports, so one of them worked fine and the other didn't (the one closer to the user was acting up). Then it degraded further to the second port. Now, if I plug and unplug several times and fiddle with the displays control panels, I might just get it right eventually. It takes some time, but eventually the machine gets it right. At least that's what I've been experiencing in the last few days.
I don't think it's a hardware issue. It's possible that my cable is at fault, but I seriously doubt that. I'm wondering if anyone else got the same problem, just checking before I go and splurge on a new cable (these cables are not easy to find).
    Thanks,
    Z

    This worked for me:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

This has been an ongoing problem with external monitors that predates 10.9.2. I wrote various tips on different methods here, though the best is probably the hot corner one:

  • Display and render bug with FCPX 10.8 on a MBP retina 15"

    Hi,
I have a brand new MBP Retina 15, 2.7 GHZ with SSD, OS X 10.8.3 and FCPX 10.8 and I have a problem with most of  video fx that just doesn't preview and render.
When I try to preview it display black on the viewer (or white picture or no effect or something uncorrect).
When I apply the fX it render it as pur black or white. Same with Magic Bullet look, when I render it's just black picture.
    No problem on geometrics fx
    Same story with Motion
I throw the pref and all the basics rescue opération, even re-install FCPX and Motion following the apple process, no changes !
I've got same configuration on the MBP 17"(2009 model) and no problem.
Does it ring a bell to sbdyelse ?
Do you know a way to contact by email sbdy at FCPX apple ?
    thanks

here is what I did :
    Timemachine save of the mac
    Restart > format the drive
    Install Mac OSX
    Timemachine BUT NOT APPLICATION
    Re-install all app's
    and it works
    Important
I did a first try when I had everything from time machine except application, then FCPX was working. Then I re-installl everything from app store and webpages of the other soft (no so many) : FCPX was working. Finally to get the last few app (like office) I decided to use timemachine/application to install them... and the same problem came back. (...)
I start from start...  format again... and install the app from app store and webpages, even MBL - Slice X and other different plugin and it work. I decided to not install some recent things before saving my system.
The main 2 things I didn't install are
    from appstore : Resolution Tab
    and from web
the SONY XDCAM driver I used this week to check some F55 files
    http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/pdzk-lt2
So It could be one of those... maybe, but I don't want to loose anymore time to know it for sure.
