MBP Retina 13 inch 8 gig ram heating up

Hi,
I just bought my mac book pro (retina, 13", 8 GB RAM). My computer seems to get hot just by browsing the web and streaming. I ran a apple hardware test and everything seems to be fine. Is there a solution to prevent the heating problem?

The temps are very normal - even 'cool' compared to my averages (about 68ºC).
But your fan speed is awfully low... even at idle my fans are at least 2000rpm (and, right now, 3708 rpm).
You may want to look into using smcFanControl - I've never used it and I'm a bit timid about messing with my fans but others have used it with some success. If your fan isn't revving up while your temps climb, that's not good.
Otherwise, you're fine...

    hi,

please help me with suggestions as which one is better monitor to have and some info about the ports or pins is also needed ( as i already have apple's mini displayport to vga adapter ,which i bought to connect my mac to projector although its done rarely )
    i do have a budget for this , its about $ 150 to 200 .
    thanks.

  • MBP Retina 13" (late 2013) 4GB RAM vs 8GB RAM

    Hello,
I am thinking about upgrading my current MacBook to the newest MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina display (base model: 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD). However, I want this computer to last for 3-3.5 years. Therefore, I am wondering how much difference does it make to have 8GB of RAM instead of 4GB? I am on tight budget so additional 200EUR for 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD is very debatable (there is no option to get only 8GB RAM configuration).
My daily usage is very light, however: (1) I'd like to be able to play games like SimCity or Civ5, (2) sometimes I need to use "heavy" apps like IBM SPSS, (3) rarely I like to use photo editing apps.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks guys!

Look at the influence of RAM and SSD on processing CPU intensive applications in this display:
Note that once you have SSD, RAM becomes less important to performance.   Personally If the bank account is thin, 4GB RAM will serve you well.  Only in very High CPU intensive applications will it take longer but they will run.  Unless yo have another MBP with 8 GB RAM next to you, you will not notice the difference.
    Ciao.

  • Flash won't install after downloading...early 2013 MBP/Retina, 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz Ram, 3GHz Intel Core i7 Processor (clean installation)

Flash Player won’t install after downloading
On the first attempt to install v14, Flash Player v13 was installed and working fine.
I opened the installation package for the new Flash Player, followed standard protocol for installing Mac software and it hung before retrieving anything.
Subsequently, while watching the beach ball spin, I got an error message that the installer could not retrieve the v13 Flash Player software.
So I uninstalled Flash Player 13 and again attempted to install v14, only to see the spinning beach ball followed by a message that the installer could not retrieve the v14 Flash Player software.
    I am running OS X v10.9.4 on an early 2013 MBP/Retina display with 3GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz Ram.
If you have any ideas or suggestions regarding my issue, please let me know.
    Sincerely.

  • My MBP Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013 Bogging down

    Hey Folks,
This is my first time posting here so please bare with me.
I use my computer strictly for Final Cut X and have gone 9 months with no an issue.  This Season I've been using it and I've noticed within the first 15 mins of editing, I see my ram go from 10gb avail to 5gb. (I'm not running any more apps than before or doing heavy VFX.) After another 5 mins it gets down to 820mb available and I have to run CleanMemory to reset it back up to five.
Now, this is the 16gb with 500gb flash and shouldn't be bogging down hard enough to reset (like windows xp)..
    Please Help?

    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
I would also check what is consuming memory steadily. It definitely sounds like you have an issue that needs taking care of. Open the Console in the Utilities folder, select All Diagnostic Messages, and see if there is a steady stream of error messages being posted into the log.

  • MBP Retina Wi-Fi disconnect during sleep

My late 2013 MBP Retina 15-inch (Software  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)) loses Wi-Fi when it goes to sleep, about 80% of the time.  I can quickly reconnect by choosing "Turn Wi-Fi off" from the menu bar, and then turning it on again, but it's still a pain.  My iMac does not drop Wi-Fi, so I don't think it's the Airport router.  Any suggestions?

  • Can I plug my Dynamic Mic to MBP Retina 13"?

    Hi All,
Very soon I will be buying a MacBook Pro with Retina Display 13 inch and I was wondering if I could plug my Dynamic mic into it? My microphone has a XLR output and it includes a XLR to 1/4. I will buy an adapter (3.5mm to 1/4) off ebay so my final output will be a 3.5mm, just like the MBP Retina 13 inch's.
So my question is will this mic work with the computer I will be purchasing, thankyou.

The Retina MBP does not have an audio input.  It only has a headphone output.   (Although it will work with the iPhone headset that has a microphone.)
You will need a USB or Thunderbolt audio interface.  Here are a few suggesions:
    Griffin iMic
    Focusrite
    M-Audio
If you are buying new and want a MacBook Pro that has a built-in audio input port,  you need to go with the 15" regular MacBook Pro.

  • What is the cost for replacing a new complete keyboard set for a 15-inch MBP Retina?

When I went back to home today, I noticed that a small amount water has been splitted on my keyboard. Several keys did not work then. I tried to use a hair dryer to dry it but it did not work. I guessed the keyboard may have short-routed, unfortunately...the hot air had cause some of the keys transformed. I am quite sure that the motherboard has not been wetted.  I will probably bring my MBP Retina to the Genius Bar tmr, just wanna have brief approximation on my repairing fee for a complete keyboard set only..THX

    Arm + Leg.
    Seriously.
The multiple insults you have inflicted on the poor computer will NOT be covered and the warranty will be void. The keyboards on the unibody computers, especially those warped by heat, are not repairable. To replace, the working guts of the computer have to be transferred to a new topcase that has the new keyboard and trackpad, bonded in place. For regular MBPs, the parts+labor charge ran in the $700-900 range. Retinas will be more expensive.

  • Will a new iMac 27 inch Quad i7 with only 4 gig RAM and 1 terabyte HD

Will this stock computer i7 Quad with the stock RAM and HD run Final Cut Studio 3 full suite effectively for basic HD editing from my new Canon hard drive/SD camcorder or should I immediately upgrade to 8 Gig RAM and 2 Terabytes HD to get the full benefit of this computer. I would like to upgrade them both later but I want 100% performance. I'm only editing 20 to 60 minute segments right now and only a few at a time and only one open at any given time.

I'm being told that "never" load your workflow into the same hard drive as your operating system. I'm sure that's an exact and professional statement and true, when possible. With this iMac you can't run and external hard drive and download effectively at the same time in order to bypass your internal hard drive because you have only one Firewire connection.USB 2 is supposed to pause and interrupts the flow so it is said to be ineffective for this purpose. I haven't found out yet about the SD card to an external hard drive but if it does I'm still being told that color correction cannot be added because it's in your external hard drive and the only solution is two hard drives in your computer to be able to effectively do all this and that is not an option with this current version of iMac..

  • A vote for the MBP Retina

For quite a few months I monitored these forums to see how the new retina MBP would go over.  I do know that forums are usually the places were people with problems appear.  Rarely do you get people showing up and saying everything is just great.  So you need to take these forums with a grain of salt and use them to guide your decision making.
So I followed the heat thread, the burn-in thread and a number of others.
I'm a programmer by trade.  I use VMWare Fusion every day and I often need tons of RAM.  Flash disk is also almost required these days as I need to switch between things quite quickly.  So when the retina MBP was introduced my drool production went up about a thousand fold!   I've been working on the following models:
    A 2008 MBP pro 17" with a core2duo, 4gb RAM and a 256gb drive
    Sold that and got:
    A 2010 MBP pro, high-res 15" display core i7 with 8gb of RAM.
In some ways the 2010 MBP was a dream machine.  The 8gb of RAM made it possible for me to open 2-3 VMs under Fusion and the high-res display made up for the loss of the 2 inches of display real estate when stepping down from the 17".
The battery life on the 2010 sucked.  I NEVER got more than a couple of hours out of it.   I also noticed that even after a nice fresh clean Lion install with few programs and processes the processors worked hard.  This machine got hot and burned through battery power like a million candle spot light.  Still it was a great machine and I did millions of lines of code on that machine.
But since the introduction of the retina MBP with its 16gb of RAM and the big flash disk I've been making a mess of my desk whenever I visit Apple's web page.  I was trying to temper that with a belief that as a first gen re-work it is bound to have some issues.  So I'd go over to BestBuy and play with the machines there.  I often got strange looks from the Apple Best Buy guy and I think he sort of came not to like me because unlike most of his customers I was in the system prefs changing settings playing with terminal windows and I don't think he appreciated what I was doing.  I didn't care.  I wanted to get a feel for the machine.
So last month I made a pitch to my boss to let me do an upgrade.  He finally relented and about 2 weeks ago I placed my order.  My MBP retina arrived on Monday.  So right off the bat I need to qualify my statements here with the fact that I've only had mine about 3 days.  Certainly not long enough to find all of the problems.  But here is my impression since getting this machine.
    I opted for the 15" retina, 2.6gHz, 16gb RAM, 768 Flash Drive.
When I received the unit on Monday I loaded it up with my editors, compilers, programs from the AppStore, music, etc.   Of my 768 I'm down to about 210gb free which is plenty.  I was expecting to use more.
The first thing I must confess about this new machine is how quiet the processors are.  I installed iStat Menus which I like so I can monitor how my MBP is doing.  With my 2010 just running a single VMWare Fusion VM had the processor at about 30% and the fan running say 3500 RPM.  It was hot and noisy.  This new machine, as I type this post has two VMs open.  A Windows 7 32 bit, and a Windows 7 64 bit.  I'm also listening to iTunes, I have mail, google chrome, calendar, contacts and a number of other apps open.  As I sit here the CPU activity almost non existent.  The rMBP isn't even struggling in the least with this load.  In direct comparison my 2010 MBP would have 30-40% CPU load and the fans would be screaming away, not at full bore but really loud. But here I sit with this new machine and it is quiet, only very slightly warm and I'm doing what I "normally" do.
For this alone the upgrade was CLEARLY worth it to me.  The computing horsepower in this machine is insane.
My unit came with (heaven forbid) the LG display that everyone in the "burn-in" thread says is HORRIBLE and some of these guys have gone through 5 or 6 replacements to solve their burn in problems.  I don't doubt they've had these issues.  I don't doubt they exist.  I have none of them.  This display is freaking amazing!
Now I've heard it said that the IR (image retention, ghosting, burn-in) can take weeks to appear.  So I'm not out of the woods yet.  But at this point in time the display is simply awesome and with the background I choose I see ZERO ghosting.  I'll say it again.  This display is freaking awesome!
Now I'm not a graphic artist and I cannot and will not try to tell you if my color point is correct for the white or not.  What I can tell you is that this display looks good to me.  I can read even the smallest text easily.  The clarity is simply amazing.  I'm 55 and have certainly reached that age where my eyes work overtime.  I wear progressive glasses and I'm not having any trouble at all with the display.
The only thing I could point a finger at is that this new retina display is bounded by a black area that for my eyes is the same color as my background.  I've found myself trying to slide windows into that area and being shocked that they are disappearing (because the display physically ends there).  This is just something to get used to or I could set my background to be a little lighter.  Anyway this is a pretty damned small negative if I must say so.
Ok on heat.  As I mentioned above this machine just idles along 99% of the time so there is little heat being produced.  I'm not doing nothing either.  In my Windows 7 VMs I'm running compilers and when the are cranking on code the Windows CPU is showing 100% while the rMBP registers this as like 5%.  Not sure I understand how that is working yet but I see no speed loss in my VM and yet my rMBP is just coasting even though Windows is registering 100% CPU.
The airflow on this new computer is to take air in from the sides and dispense the hot air out a vent in front of the display.  I personally think this is a design flaw.  I think this may be causing some of the burn in/ghosting issues because the computer is venting hot air right at the display.  I personally would have vented it out the back beneath the screen but perhaps the latch as it is designed for the rMBP may make that impossible.
But as an engineer I have an idea for a way to fix the heat on the LCD panel issue.  It would not take much to make a small plastic piece that sat in that hinge area and took the outgoing air and sent it to the sides way from the panel.  I'm not gonna design this but if the heat really is the issue this simple $2 piece would probably save the panel.
    So my take is this:
For me personally and acceptance of anything is a very personal choice, the retina MBP is exactly what Apple bills it to be.  The best, more amazing laptop I've ever owned.  It is cool (temp wise), fast (amazingly fast), small, thin, light, has an amazing screen visually and I predict this computer will satisfy my needs for quite a few years to come.
I will not berate or downplay the issues some have had.  I honestly believe there have been bad retina MBPs.  Bad screens.  Heat issues.  Failures.  They happen and those people have suffered and I hope Apple will make it right for them.  But I'm one to say that my unit more than satisfies my goals and intents. Like any piece of machinery it has its small issues.  I'm sure my screen will have some IR.  I'm sure my unit will get hot but so far it doesn't work even 1/4 as hard as my older 2010 MBP.
So my point to everyone is make your own choice.  Do not let the threads you see in these forums convince you that your retina MBP will be problem ridden.  Just because other people see and are bothered by a problem you might not be and the problem may not exist on your retina MBP.
For me, this machine is simply amazing.  I can only hope my panel does not suddenly start to show massive ghosting.  I do plan to keep a close eye on that and on the heat.  But right now I'm not expecting issues.
Good luck in your purchase and also to those that have purchased and are not satisfied.

I need to add just one more thing and that is on battery life.  Last night I sat with the rMBP on my lap installing software, surfing the web, answering emails for close to 4 and 1/2 hours.  At the point I took it back to the charger it still was showing a computed battery time remaining of 3.5 hours.
Today I had two VMs open and took the machine of the charger and sat outside with my dogs for about 30 minutes.  During this time I was working in both VMs, editing and compiling code.  My battery life estimate showed a good solid 4 hours.
This is roughly 6 times greater than what I had with my 2010 MBP and it too had a SSD.  I am not sure why but this retina MBP just seems to not work as hard doing anything that caused my 2010 MBP to struggle.
While the battery life is certainly better than I expected it is clear that load can change that very rapidly. So I think I still need to visit clients with an external battery or charger in hand.  But I don't think I will be quite so scared that my laptop will simply run out of power before I can even get it plugged in.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch 2.3 running seriously slow

Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch 2.3 running seriously slow lately, anyone else having this? It's been almost a year since i bought it but i only use it for making music and the internet. Got 70 GB free space just in case. It's an absolute nightmare right now. Anyone else having this, any ideas what i can do? Seriously heating up as well.

The kernel_task is basically the OS kernel, so it will fluctuate depending upon what is accessing it. Do you notice this with any other application you are running? What are you doing when the kernel_task ramps up to 300%? How much RAM is installed, and what do you observe about usage in Activity Monitor?
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Fan like noise - Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch - late 2013 model

If I open Frontline Commando (game app) my brandnew Mackbook pro make fan like noise. (annoying and scary) Could anyone advice please?
    my sys configuration:
Model - Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch - late 2013 model
    RAM - 8 GB
    Processor - 2.4 GHz intel core i5
    OS - OS X 10.9.1

Normal during gaming use, fan noise.
A: you notice it more in a quiet room (the typical case) which is normal, all is AOK
B: fuzz and dust has caked onto the blades causing the fan hub to get off balance and make a buzzing sound.
C: fan rotor is going bad and making a whirring or buzz noise (rare).
D: Fan is spinning up due to excess heat from gaming, heavy graphics gaming (typical, all is OK)
    A and D are normal
    B and C are not.

I've got many more where that came from. I just don't want to post a wall of text.

    An update on my situation.
I had my macbook pro replaced with a brand new one by Apple, which was brilliant customer service.
Before giving back the old macbook, I decided to copy all my essential documents over to a usb stick. I also formatted my time machine external drive so it was blank.
Rather than restore this new macbook using my time machine backup, I set it up as a new machine and copied just my documents from my usb stick. I then proceeded to carry out fresh installs of software I regularly use but nothing non-essential (namely Spotify, Firefox, Chrome, xCode, Adobe CS5, Squidman, MAMP and Office 2011).
For three days everything worked beautifully - until last night when I had my first kernel panic on this machine. Nothing was running apart from firefox when this panic occured. The report is below and states the process which was running was 'plugin-container' which is part of firefox.
    Below is the log output:
    Sat Aug 30 01:51:53 2014

I'm running the latest OS X Mavericks - all updated to date.
I've tested the thunderbolt display with a friends MacBook Air and I see no problems there.
Any clues what is going on? Or it this latest Kernel Panic just a coincidence compared to my previous macbook?
    Thanks in advance!
