The aluminum above the keyboard of my MBP Retina gets really hot, is this a common issue?

  • Macbook Pro 13" Retina (2014) gets really hot

    Hi,
I purchased a MacBook a couple of days ago and it has been fine.
However, today I've realised that the back of it at the bottom is getting really hot, even when the charger is not plugged in. I am not using powerful apps either.
Sometimes it can almost be too hot to touch for more than a couple of seconds. This happens on any surface, whether it's on my wooden desk or not.
The back getting hot also heats up the rest of the Mac to some extent.
Any advice? does it need seeing to and if so will I be charged? Like I said I only purchased it a couple of days ago.
    Thanks!

  • Hp pavilion dv4-1225dx getting really hot

ive been feeling my laptop get really hot the past few weeks... when it gets hotter ive just been turning it off but im starting to get worried somethings gonna fry.
the heat seems to be coming from the hard drive. the heat can be felt on the area just to the left of the touchpad and up to the keyboard. i can feel the heat coming through the last row of keys. the bottom is also extremely hot way more than the top and in the area that says "hp protect smart" which i think is where the hard drive is.
just downloaded everest and the temperature is running at 70 C / 158 F.
i havent changed anything on my machine and am wondering where the heck this is coming from and why. ive barely had the laptop over a year and this problem started maybe a month ago.
what can i do? there doesnt seem to be dust in the fans from what i can tell from the outside, but maybe i should take it apart and clean it anyway?
    anyone got any ideas?

just as an update, i ended up taking it into best buy (geek squad) because i have a 2 year service plan with them. they did a bios update and it seems to have somewhat fixed the problem. i no longer have the noisy fans (weird) and the temperature has gone down somewhat. it is still warmer than id like but i think im out of options here. probably will buy a laptop cooler soon. its also horrible that while searching for a fix myself to the heating issue, i couldnt find any hp documentation regarding a bios update possibly fixing this problem. i could of done the update myself instead.
i gotta say though, the lack of support from hp is horrible. not only was this a problem that occured (conveniently) 2 weeks after the 1 year hp warranty ran out but now my left touchpad button is basically falling off too. i had another hp a few years back and the harddrive on that laptop died 1 week after the warranty ran out. how convenient for hp.
i am in serious doubts if i ever want another hp.

  • My iPod Touch 5th Gen Won't Turn on and when I charge it it gets really hot

so I had lost my iPod, but then i found it and it wont turn on and when i charge it it gets really hot. Why???

    Try the remaining items of:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. The Hotness usually indicates a hardware problem

  • A few months ago my fan started making a lot of noise and is getting really hot. I've taken steps to prevent overheating, but nothing has changed. Is it a battery issue?

I've had the computer for 2 1/2 years and it started getting really noisy about 4 months ago. I'm using rulers to elevate the computer above the surface of the table to prevent overheating, but its still getting really hot and the fan is still making a lot of noise on and off. Could this be a battery issue?

  • My new iPhone 4s keeps overheating. I mean it gets really Hot!  Should I take it back?

My iPhone 4s keeps overheating, gets really hot! Should I return it?

My belief is that this is a flaw in the 4S. I've had two--same exact problem on both. I've been chasing this problem for six days. I've restored, restored without using a backup, removed email accounts, etc. I downloaded a couple of applications that show processor utilization. Consistently, the phone is around 72% of processor utilization.
Going back to my 4, I do not have these issues at all. Same EXACT configuration. (Software, carrier, etc.) I'm surprised more people aren't raising this as an issue. It also shows significantly reduced battery life. When my processor is pegged (as noted above, that is often) it loses about 5% every 1/2 hour.

  • Area just above battery getting extra hot

Recently the area just above the battery has started getting really hot. Is this normal? If not what is the cure?

I'm now having the same overheat problem with my HP tx2-1370 original battery after ordering a replacement charger from HP. I did not have battery overheat problems prior to replacing the charger [background: I ordered a replacement charger from HP to replace the damaged original charger (HP Part# 534092-001, 18.5V/3.5A output); guidance on back of the original charger says to replace original charger with HP Spare #381090-001. However, sent me HP Replacement Charger Part# 683715-001 (19.5V/3.33A. /output).] Watt-wise the replacement charger is ~0.3% hotter than the original. Is it more likely the new charger's higher voltage output is responsible for the overheating battery?

  • GE620DX gets really hot while playing high end games

Hi, i just got a notebook GE620DX it works great and performance is really worth it.
However, my only problem is that it gets really hot while playing high end games.
It feels so hot that it is like burning your hand if you put it just right the exhaust vent.
Is this normal with any gaming laptop or there is problem?
    Thanks Very Much!

Laptop computers naturally run hot (or at least very warm), and if they stay hot for prolonged periods of time they may overheat and cause serious damage. Whether or not you're experiencing the warning signs and dangers of your laptop overheating, the simple and inexpensive protective measures below will help keep your laptop cooler and make it work more reliably.
5 easy tips to cool a hot laptop
    1. Adjust your power settings from "high performance" to a more "balanced" or "power saver" plan. This will tell the system to only use the power required to run your applications, rather than always using the maximum processor speed; if you need to play games or other intensive work, you can switch back to the high performance plan as necessary.
    2. Use dust remover spray to clean out of the laptop's vents. Dust can accumulate in and block the laptop's fan vents -- a problem easily solved with a can of compressed gas (~$10). Turn off your laptop and spray the vent to remove the dust.
    3. Use a laptop cooling pad that has a fan or two. Laptop pads that have vents but no fans can also increase the air flow around your laptop and they're very portable, but for stronger cooling needs, a fan is the best way to go. For this test, I used a Belkin F5L055 (under $30), but there are also several others selected by this site's previous guide that you can explore or you could even custom build a laptop cooling system if you're so inclined.
    4. Keep your working environment or computer room as comfortably cool as possible. Computers, like most people, work much better in air conditioned environments. Most server rooms or data centers operate at 70 degrees or below, according to Server Fault, and that seems like an ideal temperature recommendation for home offices as well.
    5. Shut down your computer when not in use, and especially when you are not at home. The last thing you need when you get home is to find out your laptop was a fire hazard (one of the dangers of overheating laptops).
Taking the steps above brought down the internal temperature of an old and dangerously hot laptop from 181° Fahrenheit (83° Celsius) to 106° F (41° C) -- a difference of 41% after one hour of using the active laptop cooling pad and bringing the room temperature down to 68 degrees.

  • My mac book gets really hot

my mac book pro gets really hot when its on is that normal and how do i keep it cool do i have a bad battery or something?

I do not recommend using fan control software as it can cause potential problems that seem to be ignored by most.
If you have a first generation MBP (a Core Duo model) the fans ran at much lower idle speed than the later models. However, if you have installed the SMC and other firmware updates released for that model then your fans' idle speeds should now be much higher. They are high enough to maintain the system at proper idle temperature and will ramp up as required to cool the computer under progressively higher loads. The design engineers know much better what they are doing than most of the amateurs on the Discussions.
Keep your room temperature down to 75ºF or cooler. Buy a Targus CoolPad ($25) and keep the computer on it while working to assure adequate air flow underneath. I have two MBPs that work just fine without any fan software - one of which is a first generation model. I've owned both for over two years.
If the computer is truly overheating then there is something defective that will require you taking it in for repair.
You can use the freeware iStatMenu - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - to monitor the temperatures to be sure they are within design specs. Normal range is from around 35ºC-85ºC for typical usage from idle to high loads. Thermal shutdown occurs at 125ºC.

  • My 2011 MacBook Pro 15" is getting really hot!

    Hi there,
First time user here. I hope someone can help!
I have recently picked up a brand new MacBook Pro for work and its great, however I am facing some slight overheating issues.
Generally, I'm running MacMail, Chrome, Tweetdeck, Word, Excel and generally some kind of music programme - Spotify or a radio streaming service.
After about 20 minutes the the MacBook starts to get really hot, especially at the top of the keyboard. I've had it for about a week now and I noticed today that the black strip that covers the bar that holds the screen in place is getting hot too - if I push down on this slightly it kind of 'clicks' like the plastic there is coming away from the material - is this normal?
Anything I can be doing to keep the heat down?

Your Mac under OS X is only going to slow down a tiny bit when using Disk Utility or some other actions that the computer needs to take stock of the partitions on the drive. This occurs with any partitions, not just Bootcamp. That's the only real performance your going to lose in OS X.
In Windows, because the second half of a hard drive is slower than the first half, where the Windows BootCamp parition is going to go, while booted into Windows it could boot and perform a bit slower than one expects on a similar PC.
So if you were to time the two, a fresh install of Windows on a PC would likely boot faster than a fresh install of Windows on a Mac.
The smaller the Bootcamp partiition is, the slower Windows will perform as the only way to create another partition is at the very bottom of the drive, where the smallest drive sectors are and takes the drive longer to retrieve and write data.
However this only applies to reads and writes (like booting or opening large files), Windows in Bootcamp has full access to the CPU, memory and video card performance of the machine.
However unless your a performance freak, I doubt you will really even notice.

  • IPhone 4 battery drains really fast and phone gets really hot

I have an iPhone 4 and since November 15 my battery has been draining really fast and gets really hot when I use the phone. When I try to charge the phone with my computer it doesn't charge, but only charges with the wall hub. I have tried deleting the email accounts, deleting all apps, restoring with the backup, restoring without the backup, and still no luck. I went to the Apple store and they briefly looked at it and said it had water damage by looking at the water damage indicator in the charging port. They told me I needed to pay $150 for a new phone. I don't recall getting my phone getting wet and it seems to work fine except for the battery drain and the computer charging problem. iTunes still recognizes the phone. I thought it was a battery problem so I ordered a new battery and replaced it myself and the battery was still draining fast. When I had the phone open the other water damage indicators were still white (no water damage), it was just the charging port indicator that was red (water damaged). Also, when I charge my phone with the wall hub it charges very slowly. I have ran out of ideas and I could really use some suggestions. Thank you.

i looked on the right there is no solution to my problem.i charge my phone to 100% after 2 hours with no usage at all of the phone with 3G off with wifi off with all applications shut down all notifications and locations off battery goes down to 50% when it was running on the older ios never had this problem in my iphone.when will this problem solved

  • Blackberry Z10 - GETS REALLY HOT

Hi, I noticed my Z10 gets really hot, especially while playing games and charging the device.  It's so hot, it feels so uncomfortable in my hand and at some point, i don't want to touch its back. Anynone having the same problem? Is it a faulty unit? I don't want it to explode, i really like my phone...

I replaced my phone because I experienced hot battery and battery draining within 5 hours. It has period of it being hot but it's more acceptable because I noticed when you have a lot of update or installation like the OS update otherwise battery is now doing much better.

  • My macbook has recently started getting really hot after using it for a brief time, is there something wrong

    Hi
My macbook has started getting really hot after using it for only maybe 10 minutes or so, it can go up to 73 degrees quite quickly, I am only surfing the net etc but have a few pages open at the same time.
Also should I switch it off after I finish using it or is it ok to leave it in sleep mode for long periods of time......
it is about 1 year old
    thanks

    First try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If there is no change, install istat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and %CPU to display values from high to low.
Look for a process that consumes a large % of CPU.
You may post images of both for inspection.
    Ciao.

  • Whenever i play dota 2 my macbook pro gets really hot. is this ok?

I just recently got my macbook pro 13 inch with normal factory specs. i downloaded steam and got dota 2 which is btw a really fun game. but whenever i play it, about 10 minutes in my computer starts to get really hot on the bottom. it gets hot to the point where if i put my hand there to see how hot it is, it starts to burn and actually hurt my hand and it doesnt feel good to keep it there long lol. but im wondering if this is normal and if its ok to keep playing? When it gets that hot it makes me want to stop playing because i dont want to progressively fry the components overtime as i need to keep this computer for a long time. i almost forgot to mention that im playing on pretty settings as far as graphics. i have alot of things turned off including shadows and antialiasing and other stuff that i really dont care about and the game still looks great but the computer still gets really hot. any help would be appreciated and thank you!

    Hello:
The Mac will shut down if the thermal parameter is exceeded (I don't know what that is).  However, if it was me, I would stop playing the game.
