MBP retina crashes - seems photostream related
I have an Early 2013 13" retina MBP with 3 GHz Intel i7, 8GB DDR3 RAM running OSX 10.8.5. 500 GB HD with 321 GB free. I've experienced frequent crashes with iphoto, particularly when I try to share images to photostream. I turned off photostreams automatic uploads and downloads, but was still getting crashes. Today, I started getting system crashes. I tried using aperture but got the same thing until the MBP wouldn't boot at all (gray screen with apple and status bar that would go half way or so then system would turn off). I took to the genius bar and was told there were no hardware issues and that there was a "directory issue." They repaired it and said that rarely they've seen this and that repair fixes the problem. I took it home, glad there was no hardware issue. Now I'm getting the same thing (minus the unbootable phase -- yet). It seems related to aperture or iphoto libraries, but I'm not sure. When trying to make a reservation for the genius bar, Safari caused a system crash. Below are the crash logs from my most recent Aperture crash (just the app) and the Safari system crash:

Going from iMac to MBP retina for video editing
I appreciate that this question probably gets asked reasonably regularly but I have a few specific points I'd like some help on.
I've been using a pretty high specced iMac for video editing for a couple of monthes;
Current model 21.5 - 2.8ghz with i7 processor
250GB SSD
16GB RAM
I also run off a second 24inch monitor
My main workflow is Premiere Pro 5.5 for editing, After Effects 5.5 for compositing and effects and Da Vinci Resolve 8 for grading. I push the software reasonably hard (footage doesnt stray above full HD res so far though, I use 5D mk2 video footage 99% of the time) and I've been super happy with how the iMac keeps up.
The general work that the iMac has to chew through is - big Premiere Pro projects with a reasonable amount of dynamic linking with AE. After Effects is used for mostly compositing with quite a lot of visual effects. Resolve is used for grading with a lot of 3D tracking, noise reduction and normal grading stuff - same as the others...quite intensive).
However..... I have no portable computer and not enough money to invest in a decent one in addition to the iMac. I don't go a week where having a good MBP wouldn't have been a massive help. I'm not a massive geek when it comes to macs. I appreciate that the iMac is a desktop and should outperform any laptop but there are loads of things on the MBP retina that seem to level the field. I'd look at the following spec;
2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
256GB Flash Storage
As far as I see the MBP has;
the better USB3 sockets (a godsend when you have 64 gigs of footage to download).
More thunderbolt sockets (I could use two external monitors).
Faster RAM (1600mhz against 1333mhz).
Better screen res (although I have some questions on that).
More graphics RAM (1GB against 512mb)
So thats a lot of things that look better. Im not worried about the small 256mb HD as only the footage Im currently using will be on the MBP's HD itself.
So my questions are as follows;
How should the two units stack up against eachother performance wise when being given quite intensive tasks from Premiere Pro, After Effects and Resolve (the MBP just simply being a notebook.....the MBP having faster RAM....the iMac having a faster processor etc)?
How should the graphics compare (the iMac having a 6775 chip with 512 memory and the MBP having a 4000 chip with 1GB memory)?
How should the screens compare. The MBP obviously has a massive PPI boost but.....is the colour balancing meant to be good enough. So far I've been more than happy to use the iMac for colour grading).
Am I asking too much of the MBP to run two extra monitors when at home...?
Am I just being stupid getting rid of a desktop for a notebook as my main working computer...?
Any help that you knowledagable people can give me will be massivly appreciated...
Thank you!
AlexI think the MBP Retina would outperform the 2011 iMac as far as CPU due to the updated Ivy Bridge processor. Since the CPU's are similar (hyper threading) the clock speed is important, but the MBP Retina can have TurboBoost of up to over 3GHz. That's faster. Remember, the iMac is still in the 2011 model. The MBP Retina is a 2012 model.
GPU Wise, the NVidia GeForce 650 outperforms the Radeon 6775. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-650M.71887.0.html. Now, the Intel HD 4000 isn't really about performance (in my opinion), so if you do get the MBP Retina, turn off automatic graphic switching.
Editing photo or video on the MBP Retina would be amazing. The display is really quite vibrant. Have you had the chance to see a MBP Retina in action? I would definitely do it, if you're serious about dropping that kind of cash.
I don't think using 2 monitors is too much to ask at all; I would love to have a triple monitor setup with coding and that sort. But I can live with one . I also think it's a great idea to use the MBP as a desktop. I currently do it, and have been since January 2011.
One other thing to add, you may want to look into a USB3 hub (with full speed), so you could hook up a large USB3 drive to store files on. -
Constant WindowServer crashes on MBP retina
Hi there,
I bought a new MBP retina last week and each day I am getting an increasing number of crashes back to the login screen..
upon checking the logs it seems to be WindowServer crashing.. I am on the verge of returning my pro - 9 crashes today so far and counting!!
Any help would be much appreciated.. log as follows!

Why is my MBP Retina 15" continuously crashing and freezing within iPhoto as I flip through my photo albums ? This has occured all day now, with about 12 reboots and the problem presists. Problem started while sharing photos with facebook and now occurs while fipping through all photo albums. Have had additional problems with continuose freezing up and locking up in many other native and non-native applications, freezing all the time. This reminds me of window based systems !
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Repair permissions and restart your computer. If this works, one of your peripherals is the culprit. Otherwise, you should post in the iPhoto forum area in case your issue is software related rather than the Macbook Pro.

2 mouse-related issues on MBP Retina
Hello,
Recently got my hands on a MBP Retina, running 10.8.1. I'm having two problems related to my mouse. I'm using an old Kensington Optical Elite wired mouse. I know it's old and outdated, but I like it and believe that it should be working fine (as it did on my older laptop).
Two things I am having problems with:
-Tracking speed. Tracking speed is very slow, and doesn't seem to be effected at all by the tracking speed system setting.
-Button mapping. Can't find a way to custom configure the buttons, though some of them seem to be mapped already.
Does anyone know if there is a solution to this other than buying a new mouse?
Thank you.tracking speed can be sped up using the mouse settings under system preferences.
if you want more than two buttons you need to get an app to deal with that... apple engineers are very single minded, so no out of the box support for more buttons. -
The backup process will run for sometimes 30 minutes or more. But, it's as if, at some point, the drive just can't be found. I get the message "this drive was ejected improperly". When this happens: my machine won't shut down, disk utility won't run. I have to press and hold the power button to force a shut down. Any ideas what's going on here? A MBP Retina issue? A USB3 issue? A western digital issue (although this drive has been functioning fine on old MBP)?
Thanks! When you say that you've applied the latest 'patch,' I'm assuming that you mean the latest (July 18) software update for mid-2012 models? It was supposed to address some of the problems with the USB 3.0 ports. I don't think that, in most cases, it's a problem with the drives themselves (USB 2 or 3), rather it seems to be a port problem.
If it wasn't fixed for you using the July 18 Software Update the only thing I can recommend at this point is to see if Mountain Lion - soon to be released - will be able to fix the problems. If not, I would take your unit back to the Apple Store and let them know that you are continuing to have problems with the USB 3.0 ports. They may offer to switch out your logic board, etc.
Good luck,
Clinton -

New MBP 15" Retina Crashes Daily, Locks-up and Distorts Text and Images.
Why is my new (2 weeks old) MBP Retina 15" crashing and locking-up about 3 to 6 times a day, even while using native programs like Safari? I have all software updates. Also, today the graphics card completely freaked out resulting in distorted text and images. This occured while in Safari. My hourly reboot did repair display distortions, but it occured again later in the day !
If you're within 14 days of taking delivery, exchange it or return it for a refund. Otherwise take it in for warranty service.

MBP Retina wont go to sleep, help!
My new MBP Retina 2.6 wont go to sleep, and when it does it takes a while before it wakes up again. Closing the lid also sometimes cause it to crash. Installed programs: gfxCardstatus, Vlc and Chome.
Im reading about similar problems, and it doesn´t seem to be related to chrome, at least not for them. They also say something about xcode, whatever that is. Help!Morty89 wrote:

Call Apple Care.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years. You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty. Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired. -
Macbook Pro Retina crashing on wake
Hi,
Just suddenly my MBP Retina has been crashing and I can't figure out why.
When I open the lid all I see is a black screen but the keys light up. I then close it again, give it ten seconds and it comes to life saying it has recovered from a crash.
Couple of other things, HDMI output is no longer working. I tried booting to safe mode and it worked again, boot back as normal and it worked. But as soon as it wakes up the next time and has this crash, HDMI stops working. Also, if I restart I don't see the grey screen with the apple logo, it's just a black screen. It seem to be running the background as after 30 seconds or so the keys light up. I then close the lid, wait ten seconds and open it and I have the same crash report.
After the crash my trackpad settings are reset even though they seem to be correctly set in trackpad settings. To fix this I go to trackpad settings, click one finger tapping (for example) to turn it off and then turn it on again then it behaves as normal.
I have tried to reset NVRAM which go my grey screen back on start .... until the next crash.
I then tried to restore the OS by reinstalling the mountain lion...... it crashed a few times in the process so I am back where I started.
Then only thing that has been installed/updated recently is iTunes 11.1 which leads me to think it maybe hardware.
Any ideas would be great!
Here's the crash log:

There are also reports that the panic is triggered by waking an external display from sleep. To test that theory, open the Energy Saver preference pane and click the lock icon to unlock the settings, if necessary. Move the Display sleep slider all the way to the Never position on the right. See whether there's any change.
If not, uninstall the Universal Audio software according to the developer's instructions, then reboot and test. Back up all data before making any changes. -
MBP Retina trackpad unable to primary click
I have a MBP Retina which is only a few months old. The last few weeks my "primary click" function on the tackpad has only been working intermittantly. Initially, I switched it to "tap to click" and that seemed to fix the problem. Now tap to click doesn't work either. I can still move the curser normally. Interesting thing is my "secondary click" works fine (ie two finger tap). More interesting is that both my bluetooth magic mouse and trackpad have exactly the same problem (no primary click/tap but secondary works fine). I have tried other accounts and the recovery mode and still have the same issue. Luckily I can screen share from my wifes computer so I still have access to my files. I called applecare and tried a few reboots holding down various keys but no help. Applecare thinks its a harware problem but I suspect it is software as the bluetooth devices are behaving the same way. I have already updated to the newest sotware 10.8.3.
Any suggestions??On the built in trackpad do you hear a audible click when you press down on the trackpad?
I think it is more of a software problem. Especially since both the built in trackpad and the magic mouse does the same thing. A hardware fault would not effect both the built in trackpad and a mouse, of any kind, the same way.
For a test do a clean install of os x on a external drive, that is a clean fresh install of os x not a copy of the install on your internal drive. Then boot the system from the external and test both the internal trackpad and MM for the same problem. If you no longer have the problem then it is software related with the install of os x on your internal drive. If you do still have the problem then it is hardware.
Only apple, or a AARC, can fix hardware problems by diagnosing the problem and replacing the part or parts that are faulty. -
MBP Retina or Powerful Ultrabook?
Hi, I've been a PC user all my life, but after working my way through the first iPod Nano, a couple iPod Touches, and now an iPad 2- I've grown to like the way Apple works. I'm finally at the point where I've decided to upgrade my 4-year old Future Shop sale Toshiba, which surprisingly has lasted me a good deal of time. However, I'm not a fan of the limited capabilities, the weight, and the fact that it very easily overheats (to nearly scalding temperatures), leading me to opt for my iPad most of the time. I'm a sucker for HD and quick boot-ups, so of course I fell in love with the MBP Retina when it was released. The only thing holding me back is the hefty price tag. Because of this, I began to research several ultrabooks and found that I could get the same specs (except for retina, but I'm fine with 1080p) and even a few bonus features (I would love a Blu-Ray drive and some accident-proof features) for half, or slightly-more-than-half of the price of the MBP. My favourite features of the MBP are the "little things"- fast bootup, magsafe, trackpad, and iCloud to work seamlessly with my iPad (which, i guess isn't really a "little thing"). I'm just not sure if these are worth the extra $1000 when I could just get an amazing PC.
I plan to use this computer in the following ways:
- Web browsing/ social networking
- Homework (university... of course)
- Entertainment (play movies, TV shows, etc)
- Some video and picture editing (I have a Sony camera which records AVCHD, which edits best on Sony Vegas)
- Running language software (i.e. Rosetta Stone)
So anyway, I'm not a gamer or a hardcore video editor, but I would like to be able to do some editing and video playback with clarity and without lag. As such, I figure I really only need the i5, so the base model of the Retina is fine for me. But again, I could get a **** good computer with i5 for much less money than the Retina, so I'm looking for reasons to sway either way. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
tjHmm...
'll readily admit, I'm a bit of an Apple head, so always say YEAH GO FOR IT.
However,
I'd say be aware, if you aren't going to use the power, you may be better going for alternatives, but I'll give you a rundown of some pro's and cons for your usage.
- Cold boots in 15 seconds flat
- can play 4 1080p streams at once without lag or framerate drop
- Photo editing on Aperture is excellent
- Photostream means your photos are there almost instantly wirelessly (not with the camera of course)
- Photoshop CS6 (when the retina patch is out) will look brilliant
- I had a photo zoomed out to fill half the screen size, of a whole person, yet could still see individual hairs on the head.
- Build, engineering, design and material quality unsurpassed in the industry (you cannot flex anywhere or make anything creak)
- Logevity, just upgraded from a 2008 Air - which was still going strong with no visible wear or damage/scratches
-Power, good graphics chip, switchable for battery life
- Video editing is amazing (on Final Cut Pro - which is Retina ready) you can veiw full 1080p with the interface still visible
Cons:
- Lag - on 'best for retina' its great, on 'More space' scaling, if you allow GFX chip switching, will cause serious lag - forcing the GeForce fixes this
- Other laptops will be great for your needs, and cheaper, but may not last as long
- The next generation in a year will likely iron out the lag issues
- Most programs are not yet retina ready - meaning they look... well... very dodgy indeed
I would say the MacBook is a fantastic machine and you will not regret the purchase, it will last you a good 3-5 years and you will thoughoughly enjoy it. It's an absolute joy to you and the trackpad and keyboard are brilliant. The speakers are also great.
However, you will likely get a notebook more than good enough for your needs, as you said, for much less money. If you can happily afford it - get the Mac, they are some of the finest computers money can buy. If it's a stretch - get a **** good alternative, you'll enjoy it equally and get great performance and some extra money in the old pocket!
Hope this helped a bit anyway - if you have any questions, ask away, more than happy to help -
For quite a few months I monitored these forums to see how the new retina MBP would go over. I do know that forums are usually the places were people with problems appear. Rarely do you get people showing up and saying everything is just great. So you need to take these forums with a grain of salt and use them to guide your decision making.
So I followed the heat thread, the burn-in thread and a number of others.
I'm a programmer by trade. I use VMWare Fusion every day and I often need tons of RAM. Flash disk is also almost required these days as I need to switch between things quite quickly. So when the retina MBP was introduced my drool production went up about a thousand fold! I've been working on the following models:
A 2008 MBP pro 17" with a core2duo, 4gb RAM and a 256gb drive
Sold that and got:
A 2010 MBP pro, high-res 15" display core i7 with 8gb of RAM.
In some ways the 2010 MBP was a dream machine. The 8gb of RAM made it possible for me to open 2-3 VMs under Fusion and the high-res display made up for the loss of the 2 inches of display real estate when stepping down from the 17".
The battery life on the 2010 sucked. I NEVER got more than a couple of hours out of it. I also noticed that even after a nice fresh clean Lion install with few programs and processes the processors worked hard. This machine got hot and burned through battery power like a million candle spot light. Still it was a great machine and I did millions of lines of code on that machine.
But since the introduction of the retina MBP with its 16gb of RAM and the big flash disk I've been making a mess of my desk whenever I visit Apple's web page. I was trying to temper that with a belief that as a first gen re-work it is bound to have some issues. So I'd go over to BestBuy and play with the machines there. I often got strange looks from the Apple Best Buy guy and I think he sort of came not to like me because unlike most of his customers I was in the system prefs changing settings playing with terminal windows and I don't think he appreciated what I was doing. I didn't care. I wanted to get a feel for the machine.
So last month I made a pitch to my boss to let me do an upgrade. He finally relented and about 2 weeks ago I placed my order. My MBP retina arrived on Monday. So right off the bat I need to qualify my statements here with the fact that I've only had mine about 3 days. Certainly not long enough to find all of the problems. But here is my impression since getting this machine.
I opted for the 15" retina, 2.6gHz, 16gb RAM, 768 Flash Drive.
When I received the unit on Monday I loaded it up with my editors, compilers, programs from the AppStore, music, etc. Of my 768 I'm down to about 210gb free which is plenty. I was expecting to use more.
The first thing I must confess about this new machine is how quiet the processors are. I installed iStat Menus which I like so I can monitor how my MBP is doing. With my 2010 just running a single VMWare Fusion VM had the processor at about 30% and the fan running say 3500 RPM. It was hot and noisy. This new machine, as I type this post has two VMs open. A Windows 7 32 bit, and a Windows 7 64 bit. I'm also listening to iTunes, I have mail, google chrome, calendar, contacts and a number of other apps open. As I sit here the CPU activity almost non existent. The rMBP isn't even struggling in the least with this load. In direct comparison my 2010 MBP would have 30-40% CPU load and the fans would be screaming away, not at full bore but really loud. But here I sit with this new machine and it is quiet, only very slightly warm and I'm doing what I "normally" do.
For this alone the upgrade was CLEARLY worth it to me. The computing horsepower in this machine is insane.
My unit came with (heaven forbid) the LG display that everyone in the "burn-in" thread says is HORRIBLE and some of these guys have gone through 5 or 6 replacements to solve their burn in problems. I don't doubt they've had these issues. I don't doubt they exist. I have none of them. This display is freaking amazing!
Now I've heard it said that the IR (image retention, ghosting, burn-in) can take weeks to appear. So I'm not out of the woods yet. But at this point in time the display is simply awesome and with the background I choose I see ZERO ghosting. I'll say it again. This display is freaking awesome!
Now I'm not a graphic artist and I cannot and will not try to tell you if my color point is correct for the white or not. What I can tell you is that this display looks good to me. I can read even the smallest text easily. The clarity is simply amazing. I'm 55 and have certainly reached that age where my eyes work overtime. I wear progressive glasses and I'm not having any trouble at all with the display.
The only thing I could point a finger at is that this new retina display is bounded by a black area that for my eyes is the same color as my background. I've found myself trying to slide windows into that area and being shocked that they are disappearing (because the display physically ends there). This is just something to get used to or I could set my background to be a little lighter. Anyway this is a pretty damned small negative if I must say so.
Ok on heat. As I mentioned above this machine just idles along 99% of the time so there is little heat being produced. I'm not doing nothing either. In my Windows 7 VMs I'm running compilers and when the are cranking on code the Windows CPU is showing 100% while the rMBP registers this as like 5%. Not sure I understand how that is working yet but I see no speed loss in my VM and yet my rMBP is just coasting even though Windows is registering 100% CPU.
The airflow on this new computer is to take air in from the sides and dispense the hot air out a vent in front of the display. I personally think this is a design flaw. I think this may be causing some of the burn in/ghosting issues because the computer is venting hot air right at the display. I personally would have vented it out the back beneath the screen but perhaps the latch as it is designed for the rMBP may make that impossible.
But as an engineer I have an idea for a way to fix the heat on the LCD panel issue. It would not take much to make a small plastic piece that sat in that hinge area and took the outgoing air and sent it to the sides way from the panel. I'm not gonna design this but if the heat really is the issue this simple $2 piece would probably save the panel.
So my take is this:
For me personally and acceptance of anything is a very personal choice, the retina MBP is exactly what Apple bills it to be. The best, more amazing laptop I've ever owned. It is cool (temp wise), fast (amazingly fast), small, thin, light, has an amazing screen visually and I predict this computer will satisfy my needs for quite a few years to come.
I will not berate or downplay the issues some have had. I honestly believe there have been bad retina MBPs. Bad screens. Heat issues. Failures. They happen and those people have suffered and I hope Apple will make it right for them. But I'm one to say that my unit more than satisfies my goals and intents. Like any piece of machinery it has its small issues. I'm sure my screen will have some IR. I'm sure my unit will get hot but so far it doesn't work even 1/4 as hard as my older 2010 MBP.
So my point to everyone is make your own choice. Do not let the threads you see in these forums convince you that your retina MBP will be problem ridden. Just because other people see and are bothered by a problem you might not be and the problem may not exist on your retina MBP.
For me, this machine is simply amazing. I can only hope my panel does not suddenly start to show massive ghosting. I do plan to keep a close eye on that and on the heat. But right now I'm not expecting issues.
Good luck in your purchase and also to those that have purchased and are not satisfied.I need to add just one more thing and that is on battery life. Last night I sat with the rMBP on my lap installing software, surfing the web, answering emails for close to 4 and 1/2 hours. At the point I took it back to the charger it still was showing a computed battery time remaining of 3.5 hours.
Today I had two VMs open and took the machine of the charger and sat outside with my dogs for about 30 minutes. During this time I was working in both VMs, editing and compiling code. My battery life estimate showed a good solid 4 hours.
This is roughly 6 times greater than what I had with my 2010 MBP and it too had a SSD. I am not sure why but this retina MBP just seems to not work as hard doing anything that caused my 2010 MBP to struggle.
While the battery life is certainly better than I expected it is clear that load can change that very rapidly. So I think I still need to visit clients with an external battery or charger in hand. But I don't think I will be quite so scared that my laptop will simply run out of power before I can even get it plugged in. -
How can I test my discrete graphics card in an MBP Retina?
How can I test the hardware on the discrete Nvidia grpahics card in my late 2012 MBP Retina?
I've had a *lot* of problems with it which I won't repeat here but the latest fun thing it's doing is crashing and requiring a hard reset any time *anything* attempts to access the discrete graphics card. This includes but is not limited to:
*Opening system profiler and clicking on Graphics (it displays a blank screen)
*Running a 3D graphics benchmark
*Running intensive mathematical calculations on the GPU
*Connecting to an external monitor with the thunderbolt port and using the computer for a short period of
None of these things actually work and after unsuccessfully attempting any of them the computer becomes very unstable shortly there after and usually crashes and requires hard reset. One time I got a crash report that said something about GPU panic.
Any recommendations? I get the sense that the apple hardware test is not doing a thoroough test of the GPU if at all.
Thanks. If they add OSX support for this product and it comes in at a reasonable price point, it could be an attractive solution.

Also, there are products from other companies that allow connection to PCIe cards through thunderbolt. These two are geared more towards professional use (Audio/Video I/O cards).
