MBP Retina - External Disks consistently disconnect when wake from sleeps

Everytime I wake my MBP from an extended sleep (ie, overnight) it says that all of my external drives (FW 800, USB) were improperly ejected, and this could lead to damage... etc.
They are not ejected or unplugged, they remain connected to MBP. This exact scenario happens when I bring MBP home from work and attach different drives.. If i have an App open like Aperture, it loses it connection to the external FW dirve and cannot find source material, I have to reboot App.
Any Ideas

By the way, here is the WiFi transfer time:

    Hi Sky,
This has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • Actions when wake from sleep?

Is there any way to have my PowerBook perform an action (run an AppleScript, etc.) whenever it wakes from sleep?
I run an external monitor and would like to resize and rearrange a bunch of windows depending on the number and sizes of displays available.
    Thanks.

I had the same problem with an Al 15" 1.25hz powerbook. My problem seemed to be related to waking after I had put it to sleep by closing the lid. Among many other experiments the advice below seems to have solved the problem. I now put the book to sleep with the power button and 's' and it no longer opens when you lift the lid, but that is a very small inconvenience.

    Hi Mightdancer --
Yes, there is a way to turn off the function whereby the PB wakes when the lid is opened. I learned this just a few weeks back, reading a post by Ned Snowing of this fora. I've found Ned to be one of the more reliable and authoritative posters on here, and here's what he wrote, in pertinent part, on the subject of how to stop your PB from waking up when automatically when the lid opens:
You can ... tell your PowerBook to not wake when you open the lid. In this mode you need to either hit the space bar or power button to wake the computer. This is what I do as I don't always want to wake my PowerBook on the moment I open the lid.
To do this open Terminal and type :
    pmset -g
This will give you your current power settings and if you look down and check next to "lidwake" it will either be a "0" or "1". A "0" means that it will not wake when you open the lid and a "1" means that it will wake.
To set the "lidwake" mode to not wake type the following :
    sudo pmset -a lidwake 0
… and subsequently type in your administrator password when asked. By typing "pmset -g" again you should see that the "lidwake" entry has been modified and your PowerBook will no longer wake when you open the lid.
Obviously if you want to restart your PowerBook's behaviour to wake when you open the lid type into Terminal:
    sudo pmset -a lidwake 1

  • External powered speakers pop on wake from sleep

I just got new iMac 21.5, the most recent one that came out in May 2011. It is replacing my old iMac, the 21.5 that came out late 2009. When the new iMac wakes from sleep, the external speakers that I have connected (Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks) may a loud pop. This did not happen with my old iMac. The speakers are connected in the earphones out port. There is no difference in the setup between the two iMacs, and I have not changed the setup with the speakers. Everything is plugged in just the way it was.
I don't think the exact make of the speakers is important; what's important is that they're external powered speakers. Answers or discussion of any of these questions would be helpful:
Anyone with a new iMac having this problem?
Anyone with a new iMac not having this problem?
Has anyone with any kind of Mac had this problem and had it fixed?
The tech at the Apple Store said he was happy to swap out the logic board, but felt that the pop may still be there afterwards. He thought that this pop through external powered speakers when waking from sleep may or may not be normal in some cases. He said it's possible that Apple may have changed the audio circuitry from the time my old iMac was built. (The new logic board is currently on order.)
    Thank you,
    Mario

I found the following article from Apple: TA20612. It reads as follows:
"The popping sound does not indicate any software issue or hardware failure. This is a normal part of hardware-software initialization after waking from sleep or during startup."
I'm a bit skeptical. I think I would have noticed this on the old iMac. Since I haven't yet sold it, I'm going to try to arrange for some side-by-side testing. I'll update this thread when I have the results.

  • Loud Popping Noise when wake from sleep

On my new iMac CD 20" there is a load popping noise that comes from the speakers when I wake it up from sleep. Also, the hard-drive or the super-drive clicks a few when waken from sleep. Yesterday there was a static noise coming from the speakers while I was using the machine on the web, it was load enough to be annoying, I restarted it and the sound went any. I am wondering if any others have noticed this problem and should I take it back for a new one.
My wife has even said that the sounds don't seem right.
    Any feedback would be great!
    Thanks.
    20" Intel iMac and 12 P-book- 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I conducted some tests on my iMac, and the problem, as it were, is related to having external speakers connected to my iMac. When I unplug my external speakers (JBL Encounter), I do not hear the pop upon waking my iMac from sleep. When I plug the speakers in again, the pop returns. I do not hear the pop when I mute the speakers before putting the iMac to sleep, either.
To rule out other devices, I unplugged all external devices and then reconnected them one at a time. Only the speakers triggered the pop.
I don't think this is a defect necessarily, even though I never heard the popping sound when waking my iMac G5 from sleep (with the same set of speakers). I think it may, as I suggest above, have something to do with the change in processors.
I may call Apple just the same to see what its tech. support people have to say on the matter.
Do those others of you experiencing the popping sound also have external speakers?

  • White flash when wake from sleep

Just upgraded my 2007 iMac to ML. Notice that when I wake from sleep there's a white flash, or perhaps a bit longer, on screen before the desktop appears. It's similar to the white screen when booting, just before the worm gear appears.
Anyone else notice it? Normal behavior?

Yes, on a mid-2011 MacBook Air. Tried resetting SMC, no luck. I've installed all the prior firmware updates. It only happens when running on battery power. I'm going to experiment with disabling Power Nap when running on battery to see if that makes a difference.

  • All applications are not responding when wake from sleep.

All applications are not responding when Macbook pro wake from sleep,
the keyboard and touch pad are okay.
    Why?
    Thanks a lot.

I want to see if there's a service that may be preventing it from working properly when waking from sleep. To test this, we'll need to Disable all non-system-critical services to see if the issue occurs.
If it does not, that means one of those services that was disabled, is causing the issue.
If the touchscreen is still unresponsive after sleep with all of those non-critical services disabled, then it may be something with the registry or the hardware.
Here are the steps to disable non-critical services:
Windows + Q to bring up Search
    Type 'msconfig' and press Enter
    Click the Services Tab
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box
    Click the Disable All button
    Click Apply and Restart
Once it restarts let it go into sleep mode and then wake it back up from sleep mode and test the touchscreen. Do this a couple of times, if you have time. (When you're done troubleshooting, you'll have to go back into msconfig and re-enable all of those non-critical services, apply and restart.)
Let me know the results when you get a chance, please

  • Since updating to Lion the iMac won't recognise the external hard drive (maxtor) when waking from sleep mode,

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. I now find that I have to restart the imac to get the drive recognised..which is fine until the imac goes into sleep mode then I lose the drive and have to restart etc etc.....anyone suffering same issue.  The Ext Drive worked perfectly until the upgrade..

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK.  I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

  • Scheduling backups when wake from sleep is password protected

i'm just wondering if it's possible to wake a mac from sleep (at say 0200) in order to run a backup script, if a password is required to wake from sleep/screensaver ?
what's happening at the moment is that the computer wakes, the script starts to run, but then after about 1 minute, because the authentication dialog is not processed, it goes back to sleep, so interrupting the script
i had the same problem trying to sftp into a mac after using wake-on-lan to wake it from sleep remotely. i can successfully make the sftp connection and start file transfers, however it quickly goes back to sleep (as the authentication dialog is unanswered)
so does anyone know of a way to keep the security of require-password-from-sleep, as well as allowing useful things like running scheduled backup scripts ?
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I also had this problem and I worked with Apple Care. They are aware of the problem and apparently are working on a fix. The only way around this for now is to uncheck the option requiring a password to wake from sleep/screen saver in System Preferences/Security. I was amazed to find this problem, I can't believe Apple let this one past them because surely all those folks who use Backup with .Mac accounts have experienced this problem or don't realize their backup isn't happening. So, hopefully this is one item that will be fixed at some point.

  • No external disk encryption available when booted from Lion installer

Problem: When booting my Mac Mini from a Lion Installer USB thumb drive, Neither Disk Utility nor diskutil from the command line seems able to actually encrypt an external drive. They both seem to be able to convert the drives to coreStorage, just not actually encrypt the drives.
Background: I was able to successfully preform 3 encryptions from the Lion system on my 17inch MacBook Pro before failing as described above:
    1) I encrypted my main HD in my laptop (using System Preferences > Security & Privacy)
    2) I encrypted my Time Machine backup (Using Time Machine system prefs)
    3) I converted an external 2TB USB drive filled with data (I had a freshly mirrored copy of all this data as backup) using diskutil cs convert -passphrase from the command line
each of the successful encryptions took about 24hours/Terabyte
Here is where I tried and failed, step by step:
    ### Failure 1
I created a bootable backup of Mac OS X Lion on a USB thumb drive. I booted my Mac Mini with it and attached a 2TB external USB drive that I wanted to encrypt. It was a blank drive so I launched Disk Utility from the recovery/installer screen and created 1 partion, GUID, Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Then I went to the Erase tab and chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted), provided a passphrase and erased. It took just a couple seconds and said it was done.
I moved the 2TB external to my laptop running Lion, it asked for the passphrase and when provided the drive mounted just fine but when examined with "diskutil coreStorage list" I see a couple problems (besides the fact I don't believe it encrypted a 2TB drive in 15 seconds)
Conversion Status is NoConversion and it's not listed as revertible - my successful encryptions are listed as "Conversion Status: Complete and Revertible:  Yes (unlock and decryption required)"

Thoughts on why I'm not getting actual encryption when booted from Lion installer thumb drive? I don't want to upgrade the Mini to Lion (yet), I just want to boot it up from Lion installer and use it as an encryption station for a week.

  • Crash when wake from sleep..help!

I've had this problem on and off, but it's become very serious ever since I installed the latest security update.
Pretty much every time I open the PB from sleep it crashes...what I mean by that is that the screen is black and there's no response from the computer.
    I have tried:
    -Repairing permissions
    -Trashing the power management preferences
-Swapping the Ram (I have 2 512MB RAM sticks)
    -Running various hardware tests
I don't know what to do anymore, but I'm getting very very frustrated!
Specs are Alu PB 1.25GHz, 1 Gig RAM, 5400 rpm HD.
I'm hopeful someone here can give me some help!
    Thanks!

  • Crashing when wake from sleep

Woke my computer from sleep today, should have been at least 3/4 charged, and it crashed when I woke it up. Turned on for a sec and was able to click on safari which was already up but then crashed. Plugged it into power source and still nothing after hitting power button. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Discussions - you might get a quicker, more informed answer to your problem if you post in the Mac Book Pro forum here, rather than in the Tiger one.

  • What do I do about disk ejection error when resuming from sleep?

    Hi folks,
I have a FW800 2.5" HDD (powered through FW port).
When I close the lid on my computer it goes to sleep. If I leave it that way for a longer period of time, I get the disk was not ejected properly error when I bring the computer out of sleep. I am not sure how long it takes, as I've not sat here testing different time periods. But I do know that if I just hit sleep in the APPLE menu, the computer sleeps fine. I can then bring it out of sleep and HardwareGrowl shows me the (pre-sleep) Device Disconnected message and then the post sleep Device Reconnected message. I get know error.
I don'k think I should have to manually eject my HDD each time I wish to talk away from the computer for an extended period, yet I am wondering if this disk eject error is something to be concerned about. The disk is formatted in Mac Extended Journalling.
    With thanks,
    Jonathan

Alright, I'm slowly getting ready to do this. Apparently I do not need an install DVD but I can just press CMD+R to get to the option to do a fresh install, that's why my Mac didn't come with an install DVD (that's what I've read and what I've been told at least).
Now I'm wondering... do I need to copy those items from the User folder at all? I mean, I have a complete backup on an external hard drive. I could just go there in the folders and select what I would like to copy to my Mac again, suchs as my music library or photo library. Is there any risks? I'm worried about even the smallest things, like creation dates changing and stuff like this. They mean something to me

  • IMac Retina 5K Display changes tones when waking from sleep -- Is this normal?

Every single time that I wake my Retina iMac from display or system sleep, the colors on the monitor seem to change tones twice:
First the display goes from dim to slightly brighter (within first 1-3 seconds)
Then the display goes from cooler (blues) to warmer (yellows) (within first 5-10 seconds)
Does this sound normal?  Do you suspect the pixels are just warming up?  I tried calibrating my display, but this doesn't fix it.

Writing it off as "warming up" for the dim to brighter effect seems sensible... but cooler to warmer colors seems odd to me...
Fortunately, you can technically reach the cooler colors of your preference by doing a Display calibration, so it's not like the monitor is incapable of achieving that tone of color.  But would be nice to understand why it changes tones in the first place.  Perhaps it's doing a quick refresh to achieve an ideal color temperature?
Worst case scenario, Apple is very flexible with returns (when I bought my Retina MacBook that I felt had a hardware issue, they immediately replaced it without question) so worst case scenario you could always ask for a replacement given it's such a new / recently purchased machine.  I considered doing this, but am concerned it might be an issue with all the the Retina iMac machines... would hate to have to swap & setup the computer all over again.
