MBP Retina fan spinning while CPU is idle

Hello,
We have 2 MBP Retina in our household. I purchased mine shortly after it came out, my GF's laptop is just a week old. During heavy CPU usage the fans become noticable. I know this from my laptop only when I do things like encoding videos. However, during normal use of Safari and OUtlook I never ever hear the fans. On my girlfriend's laptop however the fans kick in a few times during the day while she is only using safari. One might say that she looks at flash heavy sites, which is not true. She was just reading BBC News like ma at the same time, and I could hear her fans spinning. The CPU usage on her laptop was around 5%.
Not sure why this only happens on hers. I have a ton of stuff running all the time, and I never hear the fans spinning in my MBP.

Thanks for the tip.  I entered the command and it states: Processes at 158 total, 4 running, 2 stuck, 152 sleeping, 887 threads.  Load Average 1.18, 1.37, 1.32.  CPU Usage 2.31% user, 4.18% sys, 93.7% idle.  Running at the same temps as shown above.  I reset PRAM, restrated computer, etc.  Unless I only have one window open doing one thing, it gets very warm per the temps noted in my original post.

  • MBP Retina: fan active all the time - is it normal ?

I switch on my MBP retina and from the very beginning an audible fan starts, although the laptop itself is very cold and there is nothing else than Safari going on. Is it normal ?

It's normal for the fans to run at about 2,000rpms but you shouldn't be 'hearing' them at that point. It 'sounds' as if your fans are really pumping if you're able to hear them (when my fans rev up to the 3,500+rpms state, I can hear them, but otherwise they're quiet).
Download iStat Menus (available for a free trial but worth every penny for me) and see how high your fans are running and how hot your MBP is running. Call back with that info.

  • 13 MBP Retina -- fan comes on and system slows to a crawl

I had seen there was a firmware SMC update v1.1  for the 15in. Is there somethng like that for the 13in

    More activity monitor observations..
When the fan is on the %CPU for kernal task was at 341.9
I close the lid wait a second for fan to shut off. open back up.
and right now kernal task is cruising at 1.4 to 4.7 %   ( normal )
When it is a 341% clearly it is locked up with some process that is either poorly written or otherwise in some infinite loop ( small pun )
There is nothing else in the activty moniter that looks likes it is contributing to the 341.9% cpu ..

  • CPU fan spins up for no reason and never spins down

I'm having problems with my new and otherwise immaculate iMac Intel 2.4 GHz. The CPU fan often spins up to 3500 rpm for no reason, even when left idle.
There are no processes running to justify the noise (no Spotlight indexing or anything) and the temperatures are as low as can be.
I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC many times to no avail.
Usually putting the Mac to sleep and waking it up slows the CPU fan down again, but it will go nuts at 3500 rpms sooner or later.
Once the fan has spun up to 3500 rpm it never spins down again unless the iMac is reset or put to sleep and woken up again. Even when hours of useless fan spinning has left it freezing cold.
SMCFancontrol won't help as it can't slow down fans only make them go faster.
Apple Support suggested I'd take it in for repairs but I'm reluctant as this smells like a Leopard/Boot Camp Issue from what I gathered on the boards. Also the repair service in Denmark is outsourced to third party repairers of questionable quality.
    Any ideas?

I got my iMac back from repairs. They said they couldn't reproducere the error which might be as it at times appear very sporadic. The fans began to spin within the first day of use after I got it home though.
It seems that more and more users on the boards experience this problem. My theory now is that this must be a software issue as it usually begins once people update to Leopard 10.5.2.
The problem manifests itself like this:
The CPU-fan will start blowing at 3500 rpms for no reason (CPU-load and temperatures can be as low as can be.)
The CPU-fan will never slow down again by itself. Even after hours of unnecessesary spinning has left the Mac freezing cold.
Putting the iMac in sleep mode and waking it up again will temporarily slow down the CPU fan down to the usual 1200 rpms (usually for about 10 mins).
Resetting PRAM and/or NVRAM (SMC) will not help.
Installing SMCFancontrol will not help as it will only let you speed up the fans further - not slow them down.
So now I really hope Apple will address this problem with a new OS X release soon.
Still, if anyone manages to fix this problem with a hardware replacemnt please let us know.
    Cheers, Jez

  • MBP Retina 15 - Fans always on and mac is cold

Hi, is it normal for the MBP Retina 15" fans to be constantly on at around 2000rpm, even when CPU is ~40C? With CPU activity at 1.5% they constantly on. Thanks.

2,000 rpm is the normal state for the fans - it's not high at all (mine can go up to 6,000+ rpms and I can hear them then).
Your fans are always going to be running and around 2,000 rpms is about as low as it gets.

  • MBP retina + Yosemite + MAGSAFE CONNECTED = freeze and spinning ball!!

    I'm really losing my mind...
Friday I finally installed Yosemite 10.10 on my mbp retina. At the beginning everything was perfect, then new updates like iphoto and imovie started to pop up so I decided to download them. At some point of the download the spinning ball appeared but didn't want to go away, even after 5 minutes. I couldn't use my macbook so I decided to force shut down.
After restarting I could log in, but as soon as I moved the cursor to the dock and clicked on the apps I needed to open (Mail and Chorme) everything froze and the spinning ball appeared again.
    Force shut down again.
The magsafe was connected at all time.
Then I decided to go to the Apple Store to solve the problem. Once I explained the problem to the guy and turned on the macbook in front of him, everything started to work again perfectly.
I looked like a freaking idiot.
He had no explanation, he just told me to use time machine to backup my data and bring the macbook there in case the issue would appear again.
Yes I tried all the possible procedures pressing the keys when the macbook is turned on. (I kept for last the pram reset and smc reset)
    Nothing.
Then this morning I realized the freezing at startup would occur only if the magsafe was connected!!! This is also why at the Apple store there was no problem at startup....no magsafe connected. I tried a few times to use the macbook normally with the battery (even now that I'm writing), and it's working perfectly!! But as soon as I connect the magsafe, go to the dock to open apps or simply click on the google chrome tabs to type in a website, everything starts to freeze again and the spinning ball stays there indefinitely.
I also tried the utility disc (in normal and safe mode). It says everything is ok.
I even tried to delete completely iphoto, imovie and caffeine and to reinstall Yosemite.
I don't want to go to the Apple Store now because it's full of people (iphone 6 just got released here in China).
Could someone help me understand what is the problem??
Thank you for all the help you can provide

Yesterday it started to do the same even with the battery! So it was impossible for me to use it. I went to the apple store...they didn't know what to tell me since the system just got released.
They ran a few tests on my macbook and it showed that it wasn't an hardware issue, it was the software. So they wanted to do a backup of my data (from one of their macbooks) but couldn't because somehow there was a password for Firevault. I never put it!! And it's not the same I always choose for my system.
Result? They had to erase everything (I'm angry because I lost a lot of my work files) and now I'm back to Mavericks 10.9.5 and I have no idea when I'll decide to update again to Yosemite.
Since Steve Jobs passed away Apple is not the same.
My girlfriend has an iphone 5, she installed IOS 8 and everything is slow as ****. Seriously.
It's really disappointing and I (we) don't trust Apple anymore.

  • MBP 13-inch 2010 overheats and fan spins continuously under Lion

    Hi,
    I have a MBP 13-inch 2010 laptop, recently updated with Lion 10.7.1.
I noticed tonight, under normal condition with Safari (with two tabs running, no Flash) and iTunes running, the laptop overheats and the fan spins continuously. This is a video that I tool that demonstrate the problem: http://db.tt/37Gicoi

If the computer isn't shutting itself down for its own protection, it isn't overheating. It will run quite hot if it's working hard, which can happen without your being aware of it except through the symptoms you mention.
Check to make sure nothing is chewing up a high percentage of processor cycles in the background, running your battery down, generating lots of heat, and speeding the fans up:

  • Are there fan noises from MBP retina 13inch?

i was thinking if i should upgrade to 15inch MBP retina (im within 14days of purchase), but there are lots, i mean LOTS of complaints about fan noises in 15inch
to me 13inch MBP retina has nearly non-existance fan noise which is good, has anyone who owns 13inch MBP retina experince any fan noises?
    kind regards

    Hi CouchP,
I know that there have been some reported issues of the fans running unexpectedly with the 15" retina display, but I stand to tell you that I have personally not had any issues. I've had my retina display since January and I use it all day for work and home and have not had any issues at all with my fan. I use istat Pro to monitor my fan levels and there has been no issue. Keep in mind that those who report issues here are because they actually have issues. Just think of the millions who do not report issues. Besides, the issues that have been reported are intermittent issues and have reported that the fans come on for 30 - 60 seconds and then quiet down again. It's no difference than if you were watching a movie or video which causes the fans to come on anyway.
Just my opinion on the matter. I LOVE my 15" book.

  • R7850 power edition 2gd5/0c - fan spin up when idle

    Hi -
    Apologies for crashing another thread.
Fan spins up every 10 secs or so when the card is idle, please help.
    Card s/n is:
    602-v273-030B1207076134
    Card model is
    R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC
    (twin Frozr IV)
I stupidly flashed a vbios for a card that I believed was same model, and problem remains.
I do not have the original vbios - it is currently running 110MH.bin.
    Thank you -

    Yes, that's it.
You have to power off your computer, then to turn it on again then the new vbios will take affect.
Try MSI VGA drivers for your card: http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R7850-Power-Edition-2GD5-OC.html#/?div=Driver&os=All
Remove current one with >>Driver Fusion<< in Safe Mode 1st,
    before install the new one

late MBP 13 Retina fan running and OS freezing

Yes, Vm lets you sett how much memory you would like to dedicate to the platform. So you should be running it with 2gb on Mac and 2gb on your Vm. If you ever run more games that would require more RAM space I would recomend upgrading to 8gb.

  • MacBook Pro - Fans spin up on power on

    Hi,
I got my MBP back the night before last night, it was in for a major repair in which they replaced the Main-board (includes new SDD, RAM, Fans, I/O board, I/O Flex cable as well as the Clamshell Retina display (Complete))
The issue I was having before, after my MBP "burn-out" something inside, which caused them to replace everything, still seams to be happening.
My fans spin-up as soon as you turn the power on.
They also stay on the whole day (and never go off).
I know this is not the standard case with the MBP - as I have confirmed this with the genius at the apple store when I took it in last night - and he told me that it was "not doing it any more" ... and I got home, turned it on... and it was doing it still .... what a waste of a trip to the Apple Store on that one
I wanted to know if other had this issue, and if its perhaps an installed app. I have the widget iStats (which is loaded on the widget screen all the time) ... To check things, and after googling things, I installed smcFan control... in which I am NOT able to tell it "not" to spin the fans, there is no option in the APP that has a minimum speed of 0 (zero) I also installed the "Macs Fan Control.app" - which also does not have the option to make a zero minimum spin speed.
Because the MBP's fans come on immediately when I turn the power ON... and stay on through log-in, and boot up... and the whole day... I struggle to see it as a software issue - unless one app along the way set something in the machine config that tells it to always be on...
During use of the MBP, and when it does get "hot" ... the fans also do not seam to spin up faster to cool it down, knowing that this algorithm may think its not necesary to cool it down when the GPU Diode is cooking at 155 degrees F - the SSD is running over 115 degrees F - the CPU Heatsink is at 126 degrees... and so on... I in this case used smcFan to cool it down by manually increasing the fan-speed (I otherwise do not have either of the fan-speed apps running automatically on boot, the only one is the iStat widget, which as far as I see does not "control" it only "reads" the values)
Is there anything I can check for this.... I really don't want to waste my time again going to the Apple Store to have a genius tell me they are not on, to get back home again to see that they are still on :S
    Thanks!
    Brad

EDIT: I notice that when using smcFanControl, you can set the "Default" for the fan speed... In this app you can not select a minimum speed of less than 2100 left, and 2000 right... Going into the other app, Macs Fan Control (MFC) it tells you the minimum speed that "can" be used is the same as what I make the minimum with the smcFan app... i.e... If I make the minimum for both fans 4000 in smc, then close it... and open MFC... then MFC tells me that the minimum fan speed is 4000.... This makes me think that smcFanControl is updating a system setting to tell is what the minimum fan speed is... which would make sense that when booting from power off, the fan speed is already set to the minimum. ( I will confirm this by setting it HIGH, and powering off, then powering off again - and will update this thread ONLY if I am wrong in the understanding that on powering ON again, that my fan speed will come on as I power on at the HIGH speed that I set it in smcFanControl!!! Only if I am wrong) ... which would lead me to the question to the Apple geniuses, of "How do I then set my "default" minimum fan-speed back to zero?? ( and I can then un-install the fan-applications, as I only installed them to see if I could control the fan speed to make it zero, which I can't)
I have only a few apps open right now while I type this, and checking activity log, FireFox which seams to be using a LOT of cpu power for me to type into this box (I must be typing blazing fast - not ) ... which makes my GPU Diode to go over 155 degrees F :S)
    :END EDIT

  • MBP Retina running warm with Yosemite....

My MBP retina display is running warm since installing Yosemite. I also get an occasions "not-responding" items in red on my activity monitor. I can close them but they come back every once in a while.
A little background: I had Yosemite uninstalled and reinstalled to try and fix the issue, but it came back after having the Apple guys reinstall Yosemite.
The computer isn't really hot, but I can hear the fans on low, which I never heard before. Previously, I couldn't hear the fans at all unless I was stressing the computer out.
Any ideas? I can post a picture of the Activity Monitor with the items in red. I'll be heading into Apple if I can't figure out what's wrong. Thanks for any help ahead of time.
