MBP Retina Filevault login screen is low resolution all of sudden

Hey guys, so I did the few software updates today to get ready for Mountain Lion and I started to notice that all of a sudden now my filevault enabled login screen (the one that's all grey and you see before even booting up the operating system) is in low resolution! Since i've had my MBPr it's always been in glorious retina resolution, and now it's all low res.
Anybody else encountered this problem or know of any fix? I'd appreciate it!
Best,
Oliver

I've got the same problem on mine after changing the resolution several times. I've just applied 10.8.2 but still have the same issue.
Havent found anybody else seeing the same thing apart from here. I'm going to try de-crypting the Mac and encrypting again to see if that fixes it. There must be some way to change it though.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. 73's

Hi, no idea how to cure it, but have noticed that it sometimes corrects itself, or after doing I don't know what... perhaps toggling the Display res a few ties until it "feels" safe about a certain rez???

Thanks for the advise. I was about to follow your instructions. Then came along another advise which seems to be less risky.
glad you fixed it but FYI resetting PRAM is NOT a risky operation. it's quite on par with just turning the computer off/on. it's an absolutely standard troubleshooting procedure which carries zero risk.
    That solved the problem
However, I'm thankful for your effort in trying to help me. And I'll remember that the dvd-region setting will remain after a reset.
    Thanks again

  • I just got a MBP Retina. At it's highest resolution, everything is tiny. The olny way to get things to a readable size is to lower the rez, but that defeats the purpose of having it. Am I missing something?

It doesn't defeat the purpose to lower the resolution. When you choose the size you can read, the extra pixels are used to make the text and graphics more detailed, closer to the high print resolution humans have been accustomed to reading on paper for hundreds of years. That is the difference compared to the coarse screen resolution of a conventional (non-Retina) screen.

    See Ogelthorpe's link:
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Why is the resolution of my Lion login screen so low?

I just turned on my MacBook Air, and I found that the login screen was enlarged, in which it seemed to me that the resolution of the login screen was very low. But after logging in, the resolution went back to normal. How can I fix this?

So the pictures hardly show a difference, but both my friend and I agree that there is a clear differene the picture quality of my laptop and the monitor.
Also, the photos are too large to be uploaded here.

  • Yosemite - login screen on low res

    Hello all,
i'm facing strange issue. After update to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Retina ( Mid 2012 ) login screen appears in low-res.
I've tried changing resolution and several restarts but no luck so far. Anyone had same issue?
    Thanks for any advice.

Also experiencing this on my Late-2013 15" rMBP...it wasn't present during the early OSX 10.10 betas but has been persistent over the last few and now with the full release.
I have done a full, clean install as well to see if something was fubared in the settings but nope. What a really silly issue to have. 10.10 wasn't ready for primetime, these aren't the type of bugs that people should be experiencing.
What I can say though is that for me, this issue is limited to when i'm using an external display. If I use my laptop without anything connected externally it doesn't happen.

  • GT60 3K IPS black borders around the screen on lower resolutions

I've got an MSI GT60 with 3K IPS display and GF880M and although it's a very powerful machine it sometimes isn't fast enough to play the games with the native resolution on high details, therefore in several games I wanted to lower the resolution to get a better experience. However this is where I have a problem, because if I change the resolution in-game what usually happens (80% of the games I've tried) is the screen is getting smaller and I have back borders around it. This is kind of frustrating and I wanted to ask if you know any way of sorting out this issue. I'd like to be able to play a game at 1080P for example but have it stretched to the whole screen.
Some of the games I've observed this behaviour:
    1. L.A. Noire
    2. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag
    3. Far Cry 3
    4. Max Payne 3
I've tried lowering the Windows resolution prior to opening the game but it makes no difference. I've also looked at the nVidia Control Panel because some of the versions of the drivers had the option to stretch lower resolution to full screen but in the latest one I couldn't find it.
As the result of this I'm feeling a little frustrated that although the notebook itself is one of the most powerful ones available on the market I cannot play it the way I wanted and I begin to think paying extra for the 3K display was a mistake a I should've gone with the 1080P version. But I hope there's a fix for this issue.

I've found a workaround but it's very annoying as I have to apply it everytime I launch a game (or if I accidently alt-tab back to windows desktop).
    1. Run the game and let it launch with the back borders
    2. Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to desktop (don't Alt-Tab, it won't work)
    3. Open Intel Graphics properties, change the resolution to 3k, apply changes, than change it back to 1080P or whichever you like and mark the Desktop Stretching option. Apply changes.
    4. Back to the game and the black borders should now be gone.
It's a workaround, not a solution. I'd really like that MSI, nVidia or whoever is responsible for this behavior find a permament fix.

  • MBP hangs after login screen with Circle with line through it

Recently, my MBP (Model A1278, MB990LL/A) started doing the "folder with blinking question mark" at start up as if it couldn't find the startup disk.
I held Option at startup and chose the Macintosh HD that it found.  After selecting, it brings me to my username/login.  I type in the PW and hit enter and the screen turns gray and I see the Apple logo in the middle with spinning gear below it.  (All good so far, as this sequence is the same sequence as my other MBP).  After about 1min of gear spinning though, the Apple logo changes to a Circle with a line through it.  It never logs in and I never see the desktop.
    Troubleshooting I've done:
    1.  Pulled out the HDD, plugged it up to my OTHER MBP and ran Disk Utility on the whole drive.  Found no errors.
    2.  Put the HDD in question in my OTHER MBP and booted into my user account just fine.  All the way to Desktop, no problems.
    3.  Took my WORKING HDD from my OTHER MBP and put it in the MBP in question and tried to boot, did the same thing.  Circle with line after logging in.
    4.  Tried to run Apple Hardware Test from boot cd by holding D but nothing happens.  Just gray screen to infinity.
    5.  Replaced the trackpad from my OTHER MBP just for fun
Any ideas?  I'm usually pretty good at this stuff, but this one has me stumped.
    Thank you!!!

No luck.  I can't do a Safe Reboot, nor can I reset the NVRAM/PRAM.  When I power on either 1 of 2 things happen.  A) Nothing, grey screen until folder with flashing question mark or B) When it decides to, it finds my HDD and goes to login screen but after entering pw and hitting submit, I get the Apple logo for a minute then replaces with a Circle w/ Line.
Can't hold Shift at reboot, can't hold c to boot from DVD (have to hold Option and choose DVD), can't hold D and boot the Apple Hardware Test DVD.
Does anyone know of a way to reset the NVRAM/PRAM manually?  Is there a CMOS battery like on a windows PC or something similar that I can remove to reset?  Command+Option+P+R does not work, it reads that I've pressed Option and gives me the Startup Disk Manager screen to select a drive to boot from.
    Thanks

  • Stuck on "FileVault Login" screen after downloading and installing Mavericks

After I finally installed Mavericks all it does now after booting up is show the Apple symbol and a popup comes up saying something like "FileVault login informatoin has changed, enter your old password."  But I can't even type anything. Mouse still moves but I can't type so I can't login?

Try rebooting into safe mode by holding down the shift key after pressing the power button.

  • Blurry Screen on lower resolutions

I've recently got a ThinkPad T61p from work, and its a great machine, however the native screen resolution comes at 1920 x 1200 which is too much for my eyes ...
whenever I change the resolution to a lower value the screen becomes blurry!
I searched the net but found nothing that could help, i upgraded the nvidia drivers but that didn't do much good either ...
I noticed something though ... in the nvidia control panel, under Display -> Change flat panel scaling
the "use my display's built in scaling" option is grayed out, when i tried to disable scaling all together, the blurryness was gone, but now of course the screen is not filling the display ...
usually there is a scaling option in the system bios so i restarted and went into the bios but found nothing there either ...
does anybody have the T61p with the same probelm ? any known fix ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

the only option in this case aside to get an external monitor, is change the DPI for text in your computer. For Windows Vista, In the desktop, right click and select 'Personlization option', in the new window, choose in the left panel, the 'Adjust font size (DPI)' and chose 120 DPI instead 96, that means that the text is going to be greather and easy to read but in your current resolution still will be a smal text. you can try to mix this option with the 1680 X 1050 resolution or 1440 X 900 to see if one adjust better to your needs. I hope it's useful.

  • Screen recording - recording part of the screen or low resolution

I want to record part of the screen in quick time x, has anybody found a way to do this?
As a work-around, I tried reducing the screen resolution to 640x480 or 800x600 but the recorder doesn't seem to pick anything up at this resolution. After recording nothing happens then when i switch back to full resolution i get the message:
*Recording failed because no data was received.*
Make sure that the media input source is turned on and playing.

I am just trying to figure out how to record a screen shot, i dont care if its full or part screen, any advice for me?
Not sure if there is any difference between OS 10.6.1 and 10.6.2, but all I did was select the "New Screen Recording" File menu option and press the record button (circle with red dot in center) to make a test recording which was automatically saved in the Movies folder when the "stop recoding" key shortcut sequence was pressed. As to SnapzProX, it is a commercial program which you can purchase. It allows fullscreen/partial screen recordings and can be set up to record a fixed area of the screen or a fixed size portion of the screen area which follows the cursor around the screen.

  • (MBP Retina 15in 2013) Screen Dying Inconsistently

    Hello,
I have a 15-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina display from early 2013.
I've been having issues that are hard to pt a finger on the source because of how inconsistent the symptoms are. My displays screen seems to shut off at random times. It appears as if it is asleep, except the keyboard backlight are still on. The computer is still active because I can use the power key to put it to sleep (The keyboard lights dim off) and wake it back up. (The keyboard lights return)
The only way to fix this issue is to hold down the power button and shut off the computer. However even when I power it back up, the computer will try to reset (It shows the white progress bar after you enter your user passcode) However 90% of the time the computer shuts off completely (not just the display) when the progress bar reaches 25-30%. Sometimes it does not though, and I can use the computer fine for a few minutes before the display dies again and the whole process repeats.
Another thing to note is that it SEEMS as if the problem occurs less often if my screen is fully open, so I thought maybe this is a connection problem to the screen, which would make sense of why the display turns off, but it doesn't explain why the computer refuses to restart the majority of the time. Sometimes when restarting the screen is immediately dead as if the display never restarted. (The computer makes the startup noise, but the display remains black)
One final thing to mention is that sometimes if I listen very closely when starting up the computer, I can hear small clicking noises near the top of the body, near the hinge of the screen, although I'm not sure if the noise has anything to do with the hinge. I cannot tell if the noise is electronic or mechanical, however it does seem to happen whenever the screen dies, but not EVERY time the screen dies.
I know that is all very confusing and inconsistent, but that is why I wanted to make a new thread - I couldn't find anything this specific anywhere on here. If you know anything about my issue, that would be very helpful!
    Zach

I also just realized that my right speakers are not outputting sound, and this is the same side of the Mac that the clicking sounds were coming from. (I haven't heard them lately) Perhaps they have gone out the the sound was because of it? Does any one know about this issue?

  • Boot screen resolution does not match the login screen on retina

Boot screen resolution does not match the login screen on MBP retinas if you've set your resolution to hi-res thus resulting a flickering at login screen appearing instead of that nice login screen animation, due to I believe screen resolution change...
is there a way to change boot screen resolution (times before login screen)???
Or do we have to wait for apple to push an EFI update for this problem?
    Thanks in advance

    No one having this issue?
please some one at least confirm this so I know thats not my setup spesific problem?
