MBP Retina HDMI input?

Can someone confirm that you can use the MBP w/ Retina display as a moniter, via HDMI. Example: Connect an Xbox via HDMI to the MBP w/ Retina display.

nope.  It's video output only.  To do what you're talking about, you'd need a video capture device, like this: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

  • MBP Retina Video Input?

    Hey all,
I was just wondering if it would be possible to use my retina display as a screen for my xbox 360. Im not sure if the hdmi port supports video input or if this is a possibility. Any Ideas?

What you're forgetting is what pixel density is supported by modern gaming systems.  Currently the xbox only outputs 1080p which is 1920x1080
Yup, that's an important point. If the xbox does not support HiDPI/Retina resolutions, you would be wasting your Retina screen and in addition, as gaming resolution goes up frame rates go down, so if you do want to drive a very high resolution screen, you have to be sure the graphics hardware is powerful enough to handle smooth frame rates while moving that many pixels or it would just be jerky gameplay all the time.

  • MBP Retina HDMI Problems

    Hi there,
I have a late 2013 MBP with retina desplay, and am experienceing somse issues with connecting it to the TV via HDMI cable. On initial connection, the screen is recognized and all is well, but if there is even the tiniest movement in the connection, the computer will stop recognizing the screen. when this happens, nothing works: not disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable, not playing with the monitor system config - nothing. Sometimes this happens even without anything being moved - the computer just seems to "lose the signal". The cable works well with other computers. Also, once this happens, the computer loses its sound completly. output in sound settings is set to internal speaker, nothing is muted, and still no sound. This is all fixed after a restart.
This has happened from day one.
Do you think I have a HW problem? any suggestions?

nope.  It's video output only.  To do what you're talking about, you'd need a video capture device, like this: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

  • MB Pro Retina HDMI - Input or Just Output

Is that HDMI port also HDMI in for capture from HDMI cameras and devices or is it just output?
    Ned Soltz

I see nothing in the description of that item to suggest that it is bidirectional. "This adapter will provide digital audio and video to your HDTV*." (emphasis added)
Try searching for "hdmi video capture device"; you'll get a number of hits.

  • MBP Retina audio input

    Hi everybody,
any ideas how to record from an external audio device (tunrtable) direct into MBP (mid 2012)?

  • MBP Retina: Missing HDMI Audio Option

Using my MBP Retina, I've tried connecting my Pioneer home theater receiver using the built-in HDMI port. The video works great, but there is no option in the Sound System Preferences menu to use the HDMI Audio as the main output. What am I missing?

Fixed with 10.8.2............although the first time I plugged the HDMI cable in it didn't work........so I unplugged it and plugged it in again and it did.........it was like it had to learn what a TV was or something.
Still doesn't have any audio controls for the TV though.......which is lame........come on Apple!

  • Graphic glitches MBP retina Late 2012 (HDMI/games)

Hi To everyone!!! First of all, I am new user so I would like to salute all members of the forum. I am looking forward to be part of this community!!
I am new here so I will try to be as clear as I possibly can. My apologies if I not very good explaining these problems. I have experience two issues lately with my graphic cards. I think that they are becoming more often.
First, when I connect my MBP retina to the TV using the HDMI cable to watch something, the connection is lost briefly (1-2 sec), the TV goes black and then it reconnects again by itself. The TV shows the resolution  (samsung TV) and everything goes back to normal. This happens after 3-7min after I connected the MBP. I have tried disabling the sleep mode of the computer (I thought the computer could be trying to suspend itself) but it didn't fix it. Any ideas of what may be causing this????
Second, when I open a game or when I connect to the TV the screen goes off!!! What I mean is that the display shows "static" (I mean like when the analog TVs use to show a black and white fuzz when no signal was detected.) Sometimes it fixes itself and sometimes I need to reboot. Any ideas?????
    Thank you very much!!!
    Best wishes,
    Tony

  • Connect MBP Retina to Pioneer Receiver no HDMI Audio

I'm connecting my MBP Retina using the HDMI cable to my Pioneer SC-68 receiver. The video works fine and displays great on the TV, but I don't get the option as to selecting the HDMI as an audio sound output. My only two options are Internal Speakers and SC-68 Airplay, which I figure the two linked up over the network by themselves.
I can use Airplay mode, but then I get no video on the screen.
Any ideas? Is Apply blocking the audio on the HDMI or choosing not to support it in favor of their Apple TV?

I'm also having this problem.  I briefly saw the SC-LX86 (EU version of the SC68, lovely Receiver btw) option in my Sound preferences today after installing an SMC update, but my rMBP froze shortly after requiring a hard reset and the option had gone on reboot.  Very frustrating.

what cable do i need to connect my macbook pro to the hdmi input on my tv?.

    hi Sam
It's actally an HDMI adapter that Apple sells.
You hook the small adapter up to your MBP and then HDMI cable to your TV. Please note adapter is for HDMI compliant for HDMI rev 1.3 and above:
My TV, which has DVI port also, besides HDMI gets its best resolution by DVI of which also sell at Apple store for the MBP.
Bottom line is check w/ your TV manufacture to be sure your flat screen supports 1920 X 1200.
    Let 'er rip and...
    cheers

  • Running two displays from MBP Retina under windows

I'm looking at purchasing a MBP Retina 13".  I have two external monitors that can accept HDMI and DVI (neither can do displayport).  Some software that I run requires me to sometimes boot into windows.  Under windows 7, can I output a DVI signal from each of my thunderbolt ports?  Do I just need to run two mini-displayport to DVI adapters?  Or is not that simple?  (both external monitors are 1900x1080)

    Hi,
    read the documentation:
    http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/to_pdf?pathname=install.112/e24169.pdf
and you will find multiple errors, you probably did.
Especially the part on preparing storage.

    Hello,
I would like to know if it is possible to display an 4K Picture from a MBP Retina 15'' on a 84'' UHD Screen (LG).
When i use the HDMI plug, the max resolution on the TV is 1920x1080.

  • Macbook Pro Retina - HDMI monitor sometimes displays blank during reboot

I'm running two monitors (HDMI, DVI-D) on my MBP Retina 13" running the latest Mavericks 10.9.2, and sometimes when I reboot the HDMI monitor which is set as the main monitor appears black/blank on reboot (power is on but nothing is displaying). The other two screens have signal and are displaying. When this occurs the HDMI monitor power button won't function and I end up having to un-plug/re-plug in the monitor for it to display.
Has anyone come across this or have a solution to this problem?

It appears this also happens when coming out of sleep mode, where the HDMI monitor comes up as a black screen and the DVI-D and laptop screen refresh correctly. (it's as if it's not getting the video signal although the monitor is turned on)
Anyone else come across this? I highly doubt this is a one time case.

  • Can I use my macbook pro for HDMI input through thunderbolt

I want to play my PS4 console on my Macbook Pro retina '13. I have HDMI cables and a thunderbolt/hdmi input cable.

It would work for a Late 2009/Mid 2010 27-inch iMac, but not on a MacBook Pro, because it does not support Target Display mode, so you cannot use it as a display for a different device.

  • How to record MBP Retina with External Capture Card?

I want to record games on my Mac, such as Minecraft and Amnesia, with my Avermedia Live Gamer Portable (in order to reduce the lag I get with using Quicktime), but whenever I try to it will not let me record. I have been told that this is because there is HDCP on the HDMI port on the MBP Retina. So I was wondering if anyone knows how to get around this?
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi there,
If I'm not mistaken, I think you need to have the power cable in for clamshell mode to work.
If you make sure the power is in you should be able to wake the MBP up from sleep mode with it shut and plugged into another display.
