MBP Retina headphone jack physically won't work

Hi all,
Recently I got a new Macbook Pro. Yesterday, I noticed that my volume was stuck on Digital Out, and attempting to change the volume would not work. Additionally, I read online that inserting and removing headphones several times would fix the problem. However, there appears to be a physical protrusion on the inside of my headphone jack such that I can only insert the headphones several millimiters (about 1/4th of the way) into the jack. The protrusion resembles some kind of metal screw in the middle of the jack.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Even if I fix the Digital Out problem, I'm still incapable of inserting headphones into my computer. Thanks for any and all assistance!

Do the basic troubleshooting steps as needed:
1. Reset phone (no data loss): press both home and power buttons for at least 10 secnds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.
2. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
3. Restore the iOS, also restoring a backup
4. Restore the iOS as new, without restoring a backup

    update to latest OSX 10.9.3
reset SMC ,   you likely put your Air into sleep mode with phones attached.
update the OSX to fix the issue.

  • Headphone jack sometimes doesn't work for my ipad air.

Headphone jack sometimes doesn't work for my ipad air, when watching a video or listening to music the audio in the ear or head phones cuts off. It's definitely not the ear phones it's the ipad because I've tried too many different headphones. It's been 7 months that I've bought it from the apple store so would you be able to fix it. Is there a  fee?

    Hello SungSungE,
please check out this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6288240
It doesn't perfectly answer your question but you will see that I have an answer from Apple regarding this problem.

  • The audio out (headphone jack) stereo just stopped working.

The audio out (headphone jack) stereo just stopped working. On all my head phones (which work fine on other devices), macbbok pro sound is only coming through the left speaker. Anything I can do about this, aside just bringing it in to the shop? btw: audio output is set to middle.

Before taking to the shop, try Reset PRAM.
Some sound settings are stored in PRAM.
Even though the article title says 10.7  it is applicable to 10.4.

  • IPod Touch 5th gen headphone jack and battery not working properly

Yesterday my iPod touch 5th gen's battery started draning at an incredible rate. Won't last longer then 1 or 2 hours now. And add onto it the headphone jack stopped working properly. It's now only plays in one ear, it's all static over the sound it's supposed to play. I baby my iPod. This all happened out of the blue. What do I do to fix it?

Saraa22 , the same recommendation was given over a year earlier:
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If anyone has this same problem with their Ipod touch 5g headphone jack. I found a way to fix it. I did everything of the above but nothing actually worked . But this is what worked!
First reset your Ipod by pressing down the on/off button and the home button at the same time for 10 seconds until you see the apple icon
Then after it turns back on : Go to settings then press on general. Then press on accessibility  and scroll down and make sure MONO AUDIO is on!
This will definitely fix the problem.

  • My MacBook Air headphone jack only left channel works

Builtin speakers are working fine on my MBA 2012, but when I plug any kind of headphone into the jack, only left channel works. If I tune output balance to right, then sound nothing.
I found there are only four metal contacts in the jack, two on each side, then one for ground, the other one for left channel, none for right channel,  what about yours?

At last, found it isn't a problem, actually any 3.5mm headphone of standard can work, just plug into the jack fully ( only one mm left ) .  enjoy ~~

  • Headphone jack is broken but works when i forcibly push the earphones in

okay so it seems like the headphone jack on my ipod classic 160gb (which is well out of warranty) is broken as it only works on one channel no matter what headphones i use, but when i push it in forcibly it still works in both ears for a second, but I can't hold it for long. I've tried cleaning any dust out with cotton buds and a can of compressed air but had no luck so far, should I persevere with this method or is there a chance the jack is still broken?
    cheers

The jack is broken. You can buy and fit a new headphone jack/hold switch assembly. Getting the iPod opened up is a little tricky but there are video tutorials to help out. I've done several of these and also battery swap outs.

  • Headphone jack 24" iMac stopped working in OSX and Windows

I was in windows XP and my headphone jack suddenly stopped working. The speakers work fine but it doesnt even detect when I plug headphones in anymore. I went back into OS X and headphones dont work in OS X either. I reset the PRAM and still same problem. Appears that something died w/ the microphone jack. I don't understand how that would just die, but that appears to be the only explanation. Would an applestore be able to fix this issue? I'm assuming the headphone jack is integrated onto the logic board, is that something they can repair in shop? Or would I need to send my unit back to apple or have it completely replaced? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention, this couldnt have come at a worse time, its my parents computer and I'm leaving for a 2 year LDS mission November 28th. Ive setup everything they need including the OS and they are extremely computer illiterate. Meaning there isn't enough time for me to ship this and have it ship back before the time is up. Does the apple store do repairs/system exchanges for issues like these if you're covered under warranty?

  • No Sound From Headphone Jack, Only Internal Speakers working in Macbook Pro A1278

Hello, the internal speakers of Macbook Pro A1278 OSX 10.7.5 are working perfectly, but no sound from headphones or external speakers when plugged in. Headphones/speakers recognized when plugged in, shown by System Preferences/Sound, and since the sound stops from internal speakers when headphones/speakers are plugged in. No red light seen coming from headphone jack, as I read in other posts. The problem began after a cable was connected between computer and stereo system. Maybe overloaded the sound card and burned out a connection? Wondering if you think that the sound card needs to be replaced or is there another solution possible? Thank you.

    Hello JohnBoarkman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you hear no sound from your accessory when you connect to your headphone jack. My first troubleshooting suggestion for this situation would be resetting the NVRAM on your Mac. Please use the instructions in the attached article to complete this process and let me know if the issue continues.

  • MBP DVI/Headphone jack interference

I have a 17 inch Mac Book Pro. I have tried to hook it up to my HD TV with a DVI to HDMI cable from the apple store while hooking up the audio through the headphone jack into my receiver. The audio comes through clearly on the receiver when the DVI to HDMI cable is not hooked up to my computer. As soon as I plug in the DVI to HDMI cable into my MBP, it causes interference and the audio does not come through clearly. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a common issue with MBPs?
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Chen4160,
By chance do you have your MBP plugged into the ac adapter at the time you hook everything up to your home theater system? I remember reading that here on some previous topics. Try unplugging it if so and see if the helps. Also are you using the two prong ac or the three prong grounded plug? It is probably some type of feed back in your system. Have you tried it on another home theater system maybe at a friends place. It may be the outlet you are plugged into at your home is not properly grounded.
Just some tidbits to stew over. Hope they help!

  • MBP Retina headphones sounds only on the left

MG... this is the third problems I'm having with my MBP retina.
This time I can barely listen to music, using the headphones, from the right side.
    What could it be?
    thanks

Check the balance in System Preferences>Sound.
If that is not a solution, try a PRAM reset:

  • Dropped MacBook Pro retina display and screen won't work

I accidental just dropped my MacBook Pro with retina display on its left side from about 2 feet. There doesn't appear to be any external damage except for the screen which is just white with some black on the left side. I can change the brightness and everything else appears to work. Any ideas on how to fix it or how much it would cost to repair. Thanks

    Oh dear
Call your local Apple Store to get a quote for a repair.
And check your home insurance to see if it's covered (it might be if you have accidental damage cover and you dropped it at home).
If you're not ready or able to afford a repair or replacement, you might be able to keep using your MBP if you connect it to an external display.
I don't know how important portability is for you, but if you would normally only use your MBP in one or two specific places (eg home and work), you could set up one external display in each location.
    Good luck!

  • Xperia Z2 headphone jack in phone doesnt work

I have problem, yesterday i was listening music on my xperia z2 and suddenly one headphone stop working, first i thought that my headphones are broken but when i come back to home i tested it on my PC and they worked.
I tested my phone with other headphones and there was sound only in left headphone.
    What should i do now?
I have this phone for less than half of year, it was naver been underwater, only water on phone comes from rain, and i pay attention to always close all covers, and it never fall on the ground.
Sorry if my English is bad.

I had the same issue with mine (And a friend is reporting the same). I had to send it to their service center where they botched the repair (left the back pannel extruding and the screen scratched). After they ignored 5 of my emails i finally got through again to send it back (Again). They botched the repair a second time, leaving the pannel extruding once more, and added another scratch to the screen ignoring my request to replace it also. After 6 phonecall's (they claimed they would phone me back with a suitable adviser each time and never did) and two more emails, they finally admitted they screwed up and sent me a new phone.  All i can say is good luck, it took me two months.

  • Mic Plug And HeadPhone Jack In Tower Not Work

I just installed the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Card in my Sony Vaio Computer that runs on XP. The serial number for the sound card is M8B04004650275U .
Everything is working except the front Tower Plus for the Mic and The Headphones. What do I need to do to get this working? Is there a setting or do I need to run a cable from the SoundBlaster Card to the card on the front of my tower?
    Thanks
