MBP retina setup 3 external monitors?

I've read a lot of places that people have been able to get 3 external monitors working though the two minidisplay ports and the one HDMI.
I have a 30" monitor 2560x1600 that I want to power from one of the display ports and two 24" 1920x1080 monitors that I'm trying to power by the display port and HDMI.
When ever I plug the HDMI port in the second display port seems to get disconnected.
Has anyone figured out a way to "trick" or configure the system so it will power the two displayports and the HDMI at the same time?

Doing some more digging it seems like this is an issue with 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 (currently on). I hope they get it fixed, as reports have said that windows drivers when running bootcamp work fine with powering 3 external displays.

  • MBP not displaying to external monitor at startup, but does after login

After I installed Yosemite my MBP will not automatically display to my external monitor (HDMI) when I start it up. I have to first login to my MBP and then my external monitor is immediately recognized and my mirroring desktops works as intended...as it did before I upgraded to Yosemite. I have no idea why the signal to my external monitor doesn't/will not work upon system start up. Anyone out there know??

Did you find  a solution? I have the exact same problem. I just install Yosemite and did not have the problem before.

  • MBP retina with an external boot drive

What does one have to do to boot the MBP retina from an external drive ?
A bootable partition on a G drive using USB 2 mounts but will not boot the MBP retina. Works fine with the air from last fall. Basically I'm trying to run DiskWarrior.
What about the Buffalo drive with Thunderbolt - will that boot the MBP retina ?
    Thanks for any suggestions !

I am having the same problem, more or less. But even after reformatting the old systems disk that had LIon on it with a fresh copy of Mavericks it it still refused to mount.
Hi, I have a rather interesting problem in that I'm trying to get osx 7.5 to boot in diskboot mode from a promise pegasus2 drive.
Theoritically the new format should mount but wont.  If there are drivers that the new MBP must reconize to mount lion then it must also apply to files that controll how the disk that Lion is installed on as well.
If someone as an answer to this I would very much appreciate your assistance.
    thanks.

  • MBP does not detect external monitor on DVI connection...

(2007) MBP C2D 2.33 15", OSX LION 3gb.  Worked fine till about 3 days ago (right after installing the last round of updates).
My external monitor now fails to connect on DVI cable. Since it also has VGA, I was able to test this way with a DVI to VGA adapter and that worked perfectly, but the vga gives a lower resolution. Having estalished that the graphics adapter and the monitor were okay, I looked for other issues.
Starting the MBP in clamshell mode, it found the monitor on DVI. Then restarting normally, it all worked fine, UNTILL the MBP went to sleep. when it awoke, no external. Plugged, unplugged, trashed display prefs, nothing, though it does still work via DVI-VGA.
I don't think having to clamshell everytime is a workable solution, but I NEED MY DESK SPACE!
    Any thoughts?

Yesterday, having had the problem become far worse, I too tried PRAM/NVRAM clearing (SMC reset so many times I can't count them). Then, in desperation I purchased TechtoolPro 6 and ran it. Everything s working well now, and in fact the video issue cleared up while techtool loaded, it didn't even wait for me to run the thing!
More: About 3 weeks ago, I made a HardDrive image from an older white macbook so I could repair its hard drive. After doing that job, I (thought I) deleted the image from my MBP, but the disk still showed 80Gb used that wasn't before. So while I thought I had 130GB free, I was only showing 50. After running the directory rebuild, I now have 175gb Free! So the directory was keeping track of 95GB that WASN'T there! I suspect this had something to do with my problems.  Then running the Defrag and Optimization routines, my 2007 MBP is running like a brand new machine. Other things that had been buggy (like the right click on my magic mouse) are now working like they should.

  • 13" Retina with 3 external monitors

    Hi,
I recently purchased a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina display and I'm trying to run 3 external monitors.
    I can get 2 external monitors to work when I have 2 Thunderbolt-DVI adapters attached. Or if I have 1 Thunberbolt-DVI, and 1 HDMI-DVI.
However when I attach all three I can still only get 2 of the monitors to work.
I've tried this with Windows 7 on the mac, as well as OSX and neither will display all 3 external monitors.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I have the same problem. Mi 3 external monitors are the same model (LS24C750PS) and are connected with hdmi (1 native hdmi + 2 adapters minidisplayport to hdmi)
Only 2 monitors are active, not 2 in particular, any 2 first connected are active, and the last is innactive.
    please help!!!

  • Problem: MBP Is not allowing external monitor Widescreen resolutions.

I am using a 27" LCD HD TV (Yes, TV, not monitor) DVI->DVI and the MBP will not allow me to use a widescreen resolution on my external monitor.
Yes, I assure you, it is Widescreen. The native resolution is 1280x720.
Anyone have a clue how I can fix this? Running a stretched 4:3 screen ***** HARD. This was my old windows PC monitor and I never had this issue before.

    Hi,
I've got the same problem. Tried SwitchResX with not much success. I'm using as second screen a Benq w100 projector. When I force resolutions like 854x480 at about 60Hz, the projector won't recognise it, which makes sense since the input is not supported as such from a PC.
I think the clue would be sending a HDTV/HDMI signal through the DVI cable. Has anybody managed to do this with the ATI Radeon X1600 that comes with the MBP?

  • MBP (rev 1.1) external monitor question

I am thinking about buying an external monitor (in the 20-24 inch range) to hook to my first generation MBP. My eyes are tired of staring at the smaller screen for big projects and the extra real estate would be nice at home. Maybe a silly question, but just wanted to be sure the ATI Radeon 1600 (256megs of vram) has ample power to run a large LCD. I am assuming it shouldn't be a problem, but would be interested in input from others. Not a gamer so no worries there but, I want it to look good and still feel as responsive as it does with the built in screen.
Thanks for any input. Suggestions on a monitor are also welcome.

Your MBP (and mine) +"Simultaneously support full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display."+
Meaning yes, you can drive a large monitor with no problem.

  • MBP 15" , Lion, 24" External Monitor Woe

    Hi
I am now running Lion and as many other people, i've noticed my fans are alot noisier now. I use my MBP with the lid closed when at my desk with bluetooth keyboard and mouse and via an external monitor. I've found that i get full 1920 x 1200 res when the lid is closed but when i open the lid (fans going nuts when streaming video and i want to cool her down) it looks like the graphics card cant handle both displays and the monitor resolution drops substantially.
I have also noticed poor wifi performance with the lid closed.
So i was just wondering what other people are doing, i guess the easiest thing is too open the MBP to keep her cool and improve wifi, and then put a magnet on the MBP to "trick" it into thinking the lid is closed which should give me the full resolution for the external display. Its shocking if this is the route i have to take for a £1500 laptop.
Not the most elegant of solutions so please let me know if there are others, its funny, i was 100% happy with Snow Leopard, and now all these little issues seem to be popping up. I guess the poor wifi has always been there but i never noticed it.
Please can someone pass down some experienced advice.
    Thanks
    Pete

  • How to setup dual external monitors on a MacBook Pro 15" A1398?

Need to setup dual monitors for my new MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display A1398. I am in instructional designer and need the larger display from dual monitors. I think the best way is to connect using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter in the two Thunderbolt ports or HDMI out of the one HDMI port and the other using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter.  I have two Thunderbolt ports, two USB ports and one HDMI port. How do I setup OS X Mavericks for this as well. I want to run it in clamshell mode. Wondered if there are any better or easier ideas?
    With peace and love,
    Sam K.

Hi! I recommend you using both thunderbolt ports with their HDMI adapters, i don't know why but in my case it has worked better than having one monitor connected on one thunderbolt port and another on the HDMI port. As for the clamshell mode I recommend you this articles: Mac notebooks: How to use your computer in closed clamshell (display closed) mode with an external display and http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/08/quickly-enter-clamshell-mode-with-an-external-dis play-in-mac-os-x/.
    This are a few recommendations:
    1. Use a usb mouse and keyboard, because sometimes bluetooth ones are not that trusty
    2. You could buy one of the fancy things (you can see one on the second article) that hold your macbook up to prevent overheating. If you can't afford one or you don't to buy one, you can prop your macbook with some books on the side of the union between the lid and the keyboard (i don't know the word in english) and a very heavy one on the other side.

  • Apple Macbook Pro w/Retina Blurry w/ External Monitor

I bought new HP 2311x monitor and connecting it thorugh the DVI to MiniDisplay port adapter. The text on the screen is very blurry. This is only happening with the retina macbook pro. I tried several other laptops and no issue.
I called apple support and they stated they can not guarentee results with third party products. The resolution to buy a 1,000 apple monitor is not a good answer.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Any Fix?
If you are, please post to this thread with the model monitor you are using and how it is connect. This needs to be fixed by APPLE!!!!!!!!

I tried all those things very first, monitor setup (All that did with that is screw up perfect settings on my monitor that worked perfectly with windows machine) and sparsely available display settings on Mac. Anyway, I am still perplexed as to why the thunderbolt port next to charging port suks so bad but not the other port that is away from it?
Retina settings has nothing to do with external display which is what we are working on. Retina settings are only for the laptop display.
My extrnal display is recognizing the monitor's native resolution and it sets correct resolution. It is just that Mac has TUNED its graphics for RETINA (non-native) display which does not like to support non-retina normal (native) display. You know how apple works. I'm sure it will work flawlessly with Apple Monitor because they exactly know their defeciencies on laptop so they correct it with Apple product.
Anyway, all that will do for Apple is defame them more than they will make on selling their monitors!
Good luck Apple, you will need it, unless you really start addressing issues (First step is acceptance of the issue!)

  • MBP Retina not recognizing external drive

I have a strange problem with an external SSD.  When I put the drive into an external USB3 case, the computer will not see it.  If I plug it into a GoFlex expansion, it sees it fine.
If I take this drive and plug it into another MBP (Via USB3) it finds the drive fine.  It will just not see it on my MBP.
Anyone have any ideas?  Is there a hardware cache in Mountain Lion that needs to be cleared?

There have been numerous - see the "More Like This" column at the right - reports of the USB 3.0 ports not working properly on 2012 models. The July 18th Software Update was supposed to address some of these problems but it seems that it did not provide a 'fix' for all. I think that at this point in time there are a lot of folks just waiting on Mountain Lion (which will surely be released in the next week?) to see if it fixes these problems.
I would suggest just waiting until ML is released and, if it doesn't offer a solution, take your unit back to your local Apple Store or AASP. There's no reason that the USB 3.0 ports should not be working - they're on all sorts of Windows machines and I have yet to hear a peep from that community about the ports not working.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MBP Locks up from external monitor? PLEASE HELP

I have a new MBP 13 and got a new ASUS VH202t-p widescreen monitor. Yesterday I started having issues with the system freezing, turning the screen white or blue. Not a blue like a PC Blue Screen of Death, but a hazy sort of blue.
I called APPLE TS and they had me do some disk utility functions. The system seemed to run ok the remainder of the evening which wasnt long I admit. Took the MBP to work and it seemed ok. Brought it home, plugged it in and in about an hour BOOM, frozen unit.
Could the screen be the culprit?

The Macbook is plugged into a wall outlet. The Asus monitor is plugged into a power strip which is plugged into the same outlet.

  • How to connect a MBP to a BENQ external monitor using a HDMI cable and a HDMI to mini display adapter?

Hi, I have just bought a brand new HDMI cable and HDMI to minidisplay adapter  and tried to connect my Macbook Pro up. The external display knows it is there but it is not getting any signal. I have tried on another TV and it also says no signal and I also tried using another Mac but it still didn't work.
    Can anyone help?

In some versions of Mac OS X, with the Displays pane open, holding the Option key will show the detect displays button in the lower right.
I am using OS X Mavericks. Where did the Detect Displays button go?
You can find the Detect Displays button in the Displays section of System Preferences. Once there, press and hold the Option key to see the Detect Displays button in the lower-right corner. You can click this button to manually detect another display.
Another technique is to sleep and wake your computer, which will send the detect display sequence as well.

  • External monitor for my Macbook pro retina.

I want to connect a external monitor to my Macbook pro retina. I'm searching for other options than Apple Thunderbolt Display. But in most products the connection is not Thunderbolt. Can I connect my Macbookpro retina to a external monitor through HDMI?
Woull that me ok for video editing?
    Thank you!

I don't know that, I'm afraid. I've used an external monitor a few times on my 2011 MBP and it appeared to work perfectly whether in mirrored mode or not, but I'm not able to make time lapse measurements. Many people seem to use the arrangement so I would presume it's fine for video editing, but don't take my word for it.

  • MBP sleep while connected to external monitor

I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere: when I have the MBP connected to an external monitor in closed lid mode, is it ok to keep my screen saver/sleep settings, i.e. it'll sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity? Will it wake up as it normally would tapping any external keyboard key?

Yes, that's fine. Once you are in clamshell mode, letting it go to sleep, then pressing a key on the external keyboard will wake it up in clamshell mode again. You won't leave clamshell mode until you disconnect the external display.
    Hope this helps...
