MBP running Leopard 10.5.3 and W XP  with freezing problems

Hello everyone
Im running Leopard 10.5.3 and bootcamp 2.1 on my MBP. I am able to run xp pro only once in a blue moon. Ever since I started using bootcamp with windows xp sp2 the computer freezes up. I always have to reboot the computer in order to use the windows side of my mac. I dont know what the problem is. I decided to upgrade to version 10.5.3 and bootcamp 2.1 to see if the freezing problem goes away and it did not help.
95% of the times the computer freezes when Im using it, or when I start boot camp. I only use windows to play games and use some military software since Im a soldier in the army. Im currently deploy to Iraq and not very knowledge in computers. I have reinstalled the apple drivers with the leopard cd because the keyboard was not working properly and it worked fine for a few minutes and then it decided to crash again. It happens very regularly, sometimes Im playing a game for hours and hours and it work great, without problems. Im really lost here. I have read the post about this problem but they really gives me no solution to my problem.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Leo

I have 10.5.3 on an external, and a 410 that I use as a backup device. After reading this post I thought I'd check it for myself. Installed the 1.8.3-6BETA, and fired it up. Everything worked, I had inputs and outputs, even recorded a little something just to test. Started playing some itunes, and about 10 minutes in, the 410 dropped out. I've tried restarting the computer and device several times, and even though the 410 shows up in my sys prefs and Logic prefs, I can't get any ins or outs out of it, and the 410 interface shows now activity on any of the channels.

I'm going to try this tomorrow, but here's a thought.....the 1.8.3-8 says in the release notes that it has new firmware for the device. I know you're using the previous beta driver, but is it possible that if you installed the -8 driver and then downgraded to the -6BETA, that the device has retained the firmware from the -8 release, which is working with the previous BETA release and 10.5.3?
Dunno....just a thought. I was SO excited to finally get Leopard onto my internal, but now it looks like I'll have to wait a bit more. Bummer!

  • Connect Linux-based external drive to MBP running Leopard?

I had the misfortune to have two Western Digital NetCenter 500GB external drives have issues in less than 12 months (Tip: don't buy one . The 1st NetCenter's browser-based admin console became unavailable and the drive invisible via Ethernet, but visible via USB. The 2nd NetCenter is not even visible via USB.
The NetCenter drives are formatted with Reiser file system but has firmware included in the enclosure so it can be connected to PCs or Macs via Ethernet or USB.
I removed the drive from the NetCenter enclosure and put it into standard USB enclosure. The drive spins-up and is "found" by my MBP running Leopard but the only option is to reformat the drive. I tried to pull the data off on a borrowed PC. Windows recognizes a USB external drive is connected but the drive not visible in the Disk Manager. I'm 95% certain my data is fine, I just need to find a way to have my MBP recognize the drive.
Anyone have a recommendation on a h/w or s/w configuration in which Leopard will recognize the drive?
    Thanks!
    Bill

I have a Simpleshare NAS Drive by SimpleTech which also uses the Reiser File System (RFS). Unfortunately, there is not much you can do with it. As I understand it, the RFS needs the Linux OS that was built into the drive in order for the Mac to see the data. RFS is not really compatible with the Mac file ssystem and not all Mac files will get copied to the drive anyway.
My suggestion is to put the drive back into the original enclosure and see if you can get it up and running long enough to get you data off of it.

  • Running Leopard on one partition and Tiger on another partition?

I have recently purchased a family pack of Leopard, and I am reading up on a lot of the posts, here, before I venture the installation on two machines. I intend to install Leopard one machine at a time and give a few weeks between installations.
One machine is a 20" 2.0 Ghz Intel - IMAC Aluminum (August 2007), and the other is a G4 Powerbook 17" 1.67ghz 250GB HD. I will probably install on the IMAC first.
My question concerns the G4 Powerbook 17." I have just purchased a 250gb internal hard drive; however, it has not arrived yet. From time to time, I want to be able to run a few programs in classic....., and to have that available to me in the rare event that I want to look at files formatted for classic programs. Call me old fashion or unable to let go of the past... .in any event, I have some files that may be difficult to convert or some software that I do not want to purchase in OS X because I use those programs so rarely.
Initially, I considered just having an external fire wire drive with Tiger installed on it in which I could boot classic up on the rare occasion.
My new idea has been to partition the internal drive to have 10 gb or so available for Tiger. Has anyone successfully run Leopard on one partition and Tiger on the other partition or do they potentially cause problems for one another? Any suggestions, recommendations or concerns are welcomed.

Works like a champ. I run Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and OS 9 on the G4 w/o problems.
Get a bootable, external HD, partition it into enough volumes to accommodate each machine, and make bootable backups/clones of each machine before upgrading/updating and ensure that each boots that machine and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

Thanks Fred. So I bought Snow Leopard, also installed ALL updates to now 10.6.8
Problem: when I start my Boot Camp (3.0.4) it does not let me use a USB. I have been reading your article that I can be on a later Boot Camp but somehow Apple is not leading me where to actually download this Boot Camp Assistant upgrade.
Keep in mind: every update on Apple about Boot Camp has been .exe which is useless to me since I do not have Windows installed.

I have just purchased a lightning to 30 pin adaptor to use on an iPad mini and a gen5 iPod touch both devices are running iOS 8.1.3 and come up with The error message "this accessory is not supported by this device "
THis is means they are not charging on a 30 pin cable and the touch won't work in my Apple iPod dock - no audio out or charge. Have re powered both devices to no avail am wondering if the iOS version is the problem
    Help!

If it is a lightning to 30 pin adaptor, and you have a 7th Generation Nano it has to fit the Nano.
This is lightning to 30 pin adapter: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple%26%23174%3B---Lightning-to-30-Pin-Adapter/6651 936.p?id=1218803450821&skuId=6651936#tab=overview
    Is this what you bought?
You need to contact Sony and see if they model you have is compatible with the docking adapter. It may not be.

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

Can not load the Organizer from the icon at the bottom of  Editor screen, from the icon on the MacBook Air dock (OS 10.10.2),  nor from the file in applications located with Finder.
I have tried without success to access Organizer after turning off and on the scanner, turning off and on the computer, loading a fresh copy of PSE12 from the CD, and restoring default preferences.  I have searched on line for other options but not  found any.

  • My Macbook Pro is running Leopard 10.5.8 and I want to install Mountain Lion

What are the steps for doing this?
I bought a used Macbook Pro (late 2008-2009 silveraluminum 250 GB HD model) after recently buying a new Macbook Air that I broke. My Macbook air was a 2012 and came with Mountain Lion 10.8 preinstalled (as there are no CD slots on the Air models). I do have an external hard drive and I had been using that as my time machine backup. Consequently, my entire  Macintosh HD has been cloned from my Macbook Air onto my western digital external HD. However, I cannot restore from my time machine backup (external HD because it says that I do not have the same operating system currently installed on my laptop.
What do I need to upgrade to the newest Mountain Lion operating system? Do I have to buy snow leopard and then again mountain lion? That seems pretty ridiculous. Or, is it possible to just buy the mountain lion OS from the app store or buy the installation CD?
Another question, is I do not see the App store icon on my dock when I have my desktop up. How would I buy Mtn Lion if I cannot access App store. Does Leopard not have an app store app??
Please provide links where I can find necessary software updates and steps to take to get mtn lion so that I can transfer my clone HD off my external hard drive to my laptop I just bought.

First you have to get the Model Identifier from System Profiler, then make sure of it's model and RAM amount, then use Crucial.com or OtherWorld Computing and max out it's RAM capacity.
There is a 10.5 version of MacTracker here that can assist in getting the full RAM capacity of the machine, not just the amount Apple provides, and the RAM specs.
    http://mactracker.ca/archive.html
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
Also a machine that daed is likely got a dying boot hard drive, so you should replace that also with something like a 7,200 RPM for better performance, large storage capacity and decent price. A SSD would be price overkill for that older machine and add another level of problems enabling TRIM support etc.
Next you need the 10.6 white retail disk Apple sells online.
Next you follow this User Tip for installing 10.6 on the new drive. It is advised to Zero Erase the entire drive regardless of new or the old one.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Once 10.6 is installed you use the 10.5 disks to install your free iLife, then use Software Update repeatly until clear to get to 10.6.8 which provides AppStore for 10.8 install (paid).
Now comes the problem. Later OS X verisons of 10.7+ are better on MacBook Pro's Early 2011 and later, the performance drops off if you use machines earlier than 2010 models.
It's because 10.6.8 was written to be a performance oriented with a small memory footprint thus it's better in tune with the processors and graphics potential of the models in it's day.
10.7+ are fully 64 bit operating systems and require a heft bed of RAM, 4GB minimal and a lot more preferred., it's why I provided the MacTracker info so you can put the maximum RAM into the machine and a faster boot drive, with RAM it's usually MORE can be put in than Apple specifies.
If you can think you can live without 10.7+, then by all means enjoy the performance 10.6.8 gives, at least with that version of OS X you can stick with the hardware that came with the machine.  For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
I say this because a 2008/2009 machine is  5 years old and on it's deathbed far a laptops typically go, so it doesn't have much left in it. It's cooling fins are likely clogged with dust (behind the fans) it's been overheating with the previous owner, the Superdrive is likley worn out and they sold it for a good reason, like that it was going to need a lot of upgrading to bring it to 10.8 only to have 10.9 released in a few months and it will be behind again, or denied being allowed to go to 10.9 or later by Apple due to the age of the machine and unsupported graphics or other reason.
Buying that machine for 10.8+ was not a good choice because of the upgrades required and the poor CPU/GPU performance. It wil run 10.8 of course, just not as snappy as 10.6.8 will be or 10.8 was on your Macbook Air.
If you can live without iCloud, 10.6.8 has over 25% market share still and Apple is issuing security updates but they don't change the version number any longer or give new features.
By the time Apple stops issuing security updates for 10.6.8, that machine likely will be dead of another cause/hardware failure of some sort, most likely the graphics will go on it next.
So I foresee the two events accuring about the same time for you, I see spending more money on that old machine in new software for 10.8 etc., as a complete and utter waste.
If you purchased a used Early 2011 model or later, then I wouldn't have any objection and say go right to 10.8 if it has enough RAM.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still

  • 10.8.4 and 10.8.5 freezing problem

I have had issues with freezing since 10.8.4 . After upgrading to 10.8.5, i still have freezng problems. THis is NOT just me. This issue of upgrading to 10.8.4+ and experience repedative freezing is a popular topic on mac forums. Apple, you are getting a VERY angry loyal customers.
My mac is not more the 4 years old, and many people with the issue seem to have a mac just a few years old. Maybe your OS is great with a brand new mac, but many of us are having major freezes with the new OS, and our computers were fast and amzing before upgrading.
I'm over the prepacked suggestions that every responce to this issue gets.No one has yet to say this works. The OS has issues. PLEASE FIX APPLE!

No problems updating to v10.8.5 here.
You didn't mention any maintenance you have tried that didn't work ???
Not enough available disk space can cause the freezing issues.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
    Checked the startup disk lately?
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Be aware, OS X Recovery requires a high speed broadband connection.
Backup all your important files before repairing or restoring OS X just in case.

I am currently running OS 10.5.8 Leporad and would like to upgrade to the new OS 10.7 Lion. Could you please tell me what I have to do in the correct order to upgrade?

first you have to upgrade to SL 10.6.8.
but there is a good essay about this here:

I advise you to wait a little (except for the SL install) till after the first update of Lion, which is expected very soon. Also make sure that all apps that you want to run are Lion compatible.

  • Leopard 10.5.3 and iTunes syncing with atv turn firewall off?

Ok so I just updated to Leopard, and with the firewall on, Itunes cannot communicate with my ATV. Itunes states that port 3689 is blocked and I have to allow communication with this port through my firewall. Now how can I set my firewall to accept communication on this port without me having to disable the firewall altogether like I am doing right now? I am very nervous right now. I tried adding iTunes to the apps selection of the firewall, did not work. Guess I need more info on Leopard firewall settings. But I cannot for the life of me find port settings anywhere?!?

Doh, and I was sooo hopeful that would work, I still get messages like this from my log
    Firewall[57]: Deny iTunes connecting from 10.0.1.197:63516 uid = 0 proto=6
    Nuts!

  • HT1386 I have IPod touch running iOS 5.1.1 and Windows 7 with iTunes 11.0.4.4. When I connect the IPod to my PC, iTunes recognizes it but before synching can get very far, it is interrupted by "charging not supported on this acc." Now what to do?

I'm having trouble with the wi-fi synch for iTunes and would be happy if I could just synch by the USB cable. With the new iOS, the connection to iTunes seems to get broken every time the dreaded "charging not supported with this accessory" appears, which is only a few seconds into the synch. Since my PC is obviously not an Apple brand charger, IPod won't stop producing this message. Using the Dismiss button doesn't resolve the issue because synch has already stopped. It looks like the hardwire to PC option is now dead.
