Mbp running slow after sleep mode

My MBP runs extremely slow after sleep mode (closing lid). It seems like Safari will take up much RAM. But I use a memory freer which supposedly should solve the problem. So after all I am not sure what is the real cause and what could solve this.
BTW it runs normally after a reboot.
Mine is a mbp 13" refurb purchased in March, 2012.
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM

I too have been noticing problems in slow behavior after sleep mode.  It has gotten so bad I have been restarting it regularly or shutting down much more regularly.  It behaves almost like normal after a re-start.
It is almost like the hard drive is failing? Last time this happened I put a new HD in.  I am usually running a large number of different programs, always multi-tasking, which has been a mac fortie. Seems worse with the last few updates.  My I mac is 24" imac 2008 model. replaced drive just before apple care expired.

my wife has the same problem with her macbook pro of similar vintage and os.

  • Macbook pro runs slow after sleep mode.

This issue has bothered me for a long time already.
And because of this, I have re-installed the OS many times.
But apparently, re-installing the OS does not help.
The machine will runs slow again after a certain period of time.
    So, here is my problem.
When you do the four finger down swipe, there will be a zooming out effect, right?
(The same function as pressing F3, which let you knows how many applications you have opened)
This zooming out effect is smooth when I first bought my Macbook Pro.
It is smooth too after I re-install the OS.
But now, after a period of time, this effect becomes so choppy and slow.
As I mentioned above, I tried re-installing the OS. It works, but only works for a few days.
And then it becomes choppy again.
The only solution is to reboot my machine.
Can anyone suggest me what to do?
I guess I have to re-install the OS again tonight... LOL

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk instead of re-installing.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • Macbook pro runs really slow after sleep mode

My MBP ( MacBook Pro (13-inch, medio 2012), 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB), runs very slow after sleep mode. I notice that when I wake it up, my memory usage is nearly 8 GB. After a restart it is back no a normal level, between 2 and 5 GB depending on how many programs I am running. Any ideas what causes this? My IOS is Yosemite 10.10.2
    Kind regards

    Hi Japib
Thanks for your reply. Here is my report:

  • P67A-GD65 (B3) slow after sleep mode

I'm having some problems with sleep mode in Windows 7 64 bit. Whenever I try to come out of sleep it comes out fine but then the computer seems to run a little slower. It's not very noticeable until you play a game, the frame rate is just atrocious but once I restart it's back to normal. At the moment it's set to go into a S3 state. Would a BIOS flash fix this problem or am I missing something here? I can shut it down for now but I like sleep mode and want to use it but I won't unless I can fix this issue.
    Added by Mod
    First my specs:
    P67A-GD65 (B3)
Intel i5 3.3 Mhz (Turbo Boost is OC'd to 4.2) Sandybridge
    CM Hyper 212+ Cooler
    G Skill 2X4GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
    HD4850
    Corsair CMPSU-TX750
    WD 1TB Caviar Black

I've experienced something similar a few months back.  The cause of it was that some drivers (can't recall which.. I think it was the marvell but I could be wrong.
What was happening was that everytime I'd go to sleep and return, I'd suddenly get tons of interrupts (can be seen with Process Explorer from SysInternals - Microsoft).
Replacing the drivers with an older version fixed it so that now I can sleep/wake tons of times without any issues anymore.
So first step is to determine what's taking your CPU juice.  Get Process Explorer & by default, it'll show you which process takes the most CPU.   On my setup with a i7 2600k, 12% of the CPU was taken JUST for the interrupts!!  when it's usually 0.01% or so now.

  • MBP black Screen after Sleep Mode

My MBP goes to sleep but I get a black screen and it won't wake up after pressing keys or mouse. The only way to wake it up is to hold the power button down and restart. The white indicator light stays on and it sounds as if the computer is running, but nothing will wake it up. Can anyone help?

I have the same problem. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes when I open my computer after it has been sleeping, the screen will not come on. The only way to fix it is to either hard boot it, or press the power button, then enter, then press the power button again after a bit. The latter tells me that the computer wakes up, just not the screen as I can correctly shut down the computer with key strokes. Mine is an Early 2008 (non unibody) MBP.

  • MBP running slow after 10.9.2 update

I have a late 2011 macbook pro & here's what's going on, it takes up to 10 minutes or so just to boot up, plus another 5 to 8 minutes to log in while watching the spinning ball, when I eventually log in, it takes about 30 seconds to a minute & a half opening apps or just a finder window, once open it appears to be running fine for a bit, then its slow again, then fast again & the cycle repeats itself, when I check activity monitor kernel_task is taking up half my memory of 4GB, this has never happened before & I was very happy with my macbook pro running 10.9.1.
I've searched everywhere for everything to with mackind & I haven't come across any solution, I've tried the SMC & PRAM reset, verbose & safe mode, even clean install on a new hard drive & it still runs very slow. somebody please help me, I've tried everything I could find on the internet, I'm just about to give up. HELP!

This is what I got from EtreCheck, if anybody can help me understand what it all means I'd be very greatful.

  • MBP running slow after new battery is installed.

    Hello everyone.
I just had a new battery installed in my Macbook Pro (from May 2008) a couple days ago and since then it runs extremely slow when I run more than one application. I have been trying to run Google Chrome and Microsoft Excel simultaneously and both lock up and shut down. I wasn't having issues before the new battery was installed. Is this problem related to the new battery or is something else going on?

Something else, I'd suppose - isn't that model a simple move two catches battery swap?
    anyway - I'd try resetting the pram - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    and smc - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
and perhaps see if console has any clues for us - also see what activity monitor says for memory & cpu use when the slow-downs occur. Are other apps affected? if they shut down/crash - a report might show something relevant. You can also helpfully test in a New User Account

  • Hello. My mac pro early 2008 restarts after sleep mode and it works slower. I tested it with apple hardwear test and it seems to be ok. Thank you.

Hello. My mac pro early 2008 restarts after sleep mode and it works slower. I tested it with apple hardwear test and it seems to be ok. Thank you.

    Try this:
clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current.  Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old.  Might want ATI 5870 or 5770.

  • Imac 11,2 running slower after installing software updates

I purchased my imac 11,2 Sept. 2010. I recently downloaded my software updates that included airport utility, itunes and canon printer software update. Since these downloads, the imac has been very slow. Does anybody have any suggestions why my imac runs slower after software updates and what can be done to get my imac back to previous speed.

    isis24680,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions? Do you have your eMac in display-only sleep overnight, or use a utility such as OnyX, or otherwise ensure the Unix crom maintenenace scripts run? OS X 10.4.2 (in 7/05) included provision to force the maintenance scripts when sufficiently oberdue; it's possible you're seeing the Mac trying to catch up on a year-plus worth of maintenance.
Do you have anything showing in System Preferences> Others, especially anything that adds to the menu bar? You'll need to check that any add-on system utilities or background programs are updated to run properly under 10.4.6; a quick way to check is to Start Up in Safe Mode and see if performance returns to normal.
Open Applications> Utilities> Activity Monitor, show all tasks, and sort the list by CPU. Is their anything regularly showing up at more than say 15% of the CPU usage?

  • Macbook Pro still running slow after reformat

So my Macbook pro, which is about 3-4 years old now, just started running slow after the latest update i did, whichever the latest one was. Possibly a security update or whatever it was. So i decided it was time to reformat and just clear out the stuff on my computer so i erased the HD and reinstalled Snow Leopard. After all that it still lags and is slow. Its slow on things like scrolling down a web page, or opening programs, or when i use expose, it isn't super smooth like it normally is.
My MBP has 4gb of ram and 2.2ghz. I have also tried to repair the disk permissions, but didnt seem to help drastically. Any suggestions?

    Hi there,
Have you applied all updates? Using Software Update or manually? Checked for EFI and SMC versions?
Don't you have any clue from Console logs?
Repair as T posted and bring back news and info about your Graphic Card.
    Good luck.

  • No video after sleep mode.

Brand new home built system (all new components unless noted otherwise) running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium on the following hardware:
    MSI X58 Pro-E motherboard,
    Intel Core i7-920 (2.66) CPU,
    Enermax PRO82+ 525W powersupply,
    Sapphire ATI HD5670 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E video,
    8GB Corsair 1333MHz RAM,
WD Velociraptor 150GB 10,000 RPM boot drive,
WD 500GB Caviar Black for file storage,
    Plextor DVD-RW,
    CoolerMaster case.
    Older Viewsonic VP2030B monitor,
    Older Microsoft Desktop 6000 V2 keyboard/mouse.
With standard Windows 7 power saving features enabled, the following
    intermittent problems occur:
After the system has gone into sleep mode, the video card provides no signal to the monitor. Moving the mouse or touching keys on the keyboard obviously bring the system back out of sleep mode, but no video signal is received. Unplugging the DVI-D
cable from the card results in the Windows sound indicating a change. Plugging it back in, results in a Windows sound indicating the change. This happens when you unplug one end of the cable, it doesn't matter if it is at the monitor end or the video card
end - as long as the other end is of course still plugged in. The only resolution to this "no video" state is to reboot the computer with the power or reset button.
On some occasions when turning the PC on, there is no video signal. The system boots properly (although the BIOS screen takes about 15 seconds to appear - something MSI says is OK), and can be shut down with the correct keyboard sequence. The monitor
runs through VGA, DVI-A and DVI-D, but no signal is ever received so it goes into standby mode.
When the computer boots properly, usually while it is still loading Outlook (which is set to start automatically), the screen goes completely blank for 5 or more seconds, then comes back on and the monitor menu indicates that it is running at the correct
resolution, and then the video works correctly from there on in - unless it goes to sleep.
On some occasions, when recovering from a "no video after sleep mode" incident, everything on the screen has been moved towards the upper left side of the screen. The Outlook window which is normally quite large (80%) and centred on the screen has been reduced
in size to about 50% and shoved into the top left corner. Also, the 4 gadgets that normally run vertically along the right side of the screen have been moved up and towards the middle of the screen, one or two of them often overlap others.
    Things I have done/tried:
    All Windows 7 updates,
    All motherboard BIOS updates,
All video card drivers and software updates from ATI,
    Replaced the DVI-D cable,
Uninstalled the video card and drivers, and moved the card to a different PCI-E slot,
Replaced the video card with another Sapphire ATI HD5450 card (temporarily).
Sapphire thinks it's a hardware problem with the original card, but since temporarily replacing it with another card, the problems continue, so I doubt that is the issue. (Plus I have to pay $25 to ship the apparently defective - under warranty card - back
    to them.)
These problems have happened intermittently since the system was built in January 2010 and they seem to be quite random, sometimes not happening for weeks, other times happening every few days. Sometimes the system is in sleep mode for 1/2 hour and it happens,
other times it is in sleep mode for hours and it happens (or doesn't).
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi again,
OK, I finally got around to trying this. I still have to check if that actually fixed it, but I managed to get into the "Factory" OSD screen.
I had my system running, disconnected my new monitor and plugged in the flaky old Viewsonic. I then:
    1. Depressed and held down the #2 button, then depressed and held down the Power button,
    2. Almost immediately the amber power light turned-on, the backlight turned on and the output image from the PC showed up.
    3. The On Screen Display (OSD) for all the monitor setting came up (at the bottom of the screen instead of the middle where it normally is), and underneath the Main Menu window in the OSD, along the bottom of the overall OSD window, the word "Factory" appears
in the middle between the control button keys (#1 for exit, and #2 for enter). (It's not normally there.)
    4. Using the down arrow key on the face of the monitor, I highlighted the "Factory" menu item, pressed the #2 key and voula! there was a whole new simple white text on bright blue background window, which among all sorts of settings included "Factory Reset"
    (which is the default selection).
    5. I pressed #2 again to accept and it was done.
All that is left is to do is some user testing to see if the monitor behaves as new.
Additional informtion: in the top of the "Factory" menu it reads: "LOVP AU Ver.0.36"
I took photos of everything and will post them on my Flickr account. To find them go to wwww.flickr.com, click on the search button, then on the next screen click on the People tab, enter my name and click search.
    Thanks again for the advice.
    Tom

You are over working your RAM. Your machine should be able to take more RAM.
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.
