MBP Safari won't stop crashing

I just bought my MBP today, I transferred my files and applications from my old iBook using the setup assistant.
I then tried to open Safari but it "unexpectedly quits" before it finishes loading every single time. Firefox works fine.
Also have an error message everytime I boot up saying that my Norton Antivirus auto-protect cannot be enabled. If I try to perform LiveUpdate for Norton it freezes the whole system.
I saw on someone else's question that perhaps Symantec (Norton) software might have something to due with my safari problem.
i'd really appreciate some help and not have to go to the genius bar after just buying the dang thing. thanks!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

does safari have any ppc plugins installed? this is quite often the problem.
also i would seriously consider removing the norton software. it is almost impossible to get a virus on a mac unless you are completely careless, and the norton software tends to cause more problems than it solves for macs. it also slows down your computer.

  • PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences...

I seem to have tried everything to fix the issue but PPro CC14 won't stop crashing and freezing only minutes after editing commences. I am working on a Mac and have just updated to Mavericks as a final attempt to help solve the problem. I have tried calling Adobe but their phone support in Australia is shocking. I have resorted to posting here but haven't had any help yet. I really need to sort this issue out ASAP.

Its it possibly related to your graphics drivers?  Seems similar to something I was experiencing that was resolved by updating my nvida cuda drivers (see thread link).  I also started running activity monitor to keep track of the memory and processor use.  That said after solving the problem by updating my drivers and switching to the CUDA acceleration, on occasion I get into ruts where it opens and freezes all the time.  It does seem helpful to try and reduce project size if possible - I normal keep a track record of sequence revisions and such, but when possible it seems that clearing out as much as possible by deleting or project managing into a new project can help things run better.

safari won't search - crashes. It will connect to a bookmark or known address but will not seach.  I have iMac's but like to keep my old eMac going because I like the data base on Applework and a few other functions.

    Hi Ken,
    Couple of things to try...
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
Or whatever interface you connect with.

    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...

Quit Safari. Move those items to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.

Log out and log back in.
Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock all your user files, reset their ownership, and remove their access-control lists. If you've set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    C.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
    File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • Help :( Skype 7.1 won't stop crashing no matter what I try.

Last night I got a msg to update my skype to version 7.1, so I did that and turned off my laptop.
Today I logged on my laptop and logged in Skype, and right after I logged in, not even 30 seconds later, on the home page it comes up with a msg that says "skype has stopped working" and the program closed.
I tried everything on this list to see if I could fix it, https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10382/why-does-skype-for-windows-desktop-crash-my-computer?frompage=search&q=skype%20crashes?q=skype+crashes+on+start+up
There was no problems with my laptop, no viruses, nothing blocking it from working, and no corrupted files or errors. I even tried to install a previous version of Skype, and tried older Skypes, (7.0, 6.9) as well. But nothing has worked so I uninstalled all of it, and put 7.1 back but I still can't get my Skype to stop crashing at startup.
I keep thinking it has to be caused by the Skype 7.1 update because up until I did that, my Skype worked perfectly. I haven't been able to use Skype all day, can someone help please? I don't know what else to try.

  • Safari will not stop CRASHING! Reinstalled from disc and STILL crashing!

    Here is my tragic story...
The day Safari 3.0 beta came out, I upgraded to it. I've had zero problems with it since until just recently. I was using my laptop without a power cord and received the "You are now running on reserve power..." warning. I left my computer for a moment and when I came back it had completely run out of power and turned itself off. As far as I know, its not supposed to do that and instead put itself to sleep and not turn completely off. Anyway, I plugged it in and booted it back up. I went back to work as usual, but shortly after launching Safari 3.0, which I'd been using right before the computer shut itself down, Safari just froze and then closed itself. I tried to reopen it and it did the same thing. This is without me even going to a web site.
Long story short, I reverted back to 2.0 using the convenient uninstall package Apple provides in the Safari 3.0 beta. I thought this would solve all my problems, but it certainly did not. Immediately upon launching Safari 2.0, it crashed. Again, this is without me even going to a web site.
This brings us to the present day. I was advised to remove all Safari files from my computer (of course I backed up my bookmarks etc.) and then to reinstall the original Safari 2.0 from the Tiger installation disc...
I just finished doing that and, of course, immediately after launching Safari 2.0 that I had just reinstalled from the Tiger installation disc...it crashed without me even going to a web site.
What do I need to do to get Safari 2.0 working on my computer again?!?!
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi,
Are you have installed some 3th party plugins ? or scripts that are related to the safari application.
Did you try to trash the com.apple.Safari.plist in the Preferences folder ??
An if this is not working ... try the following ...
** Try to run the un-stall program that came with Safari beta 3 AGAIN ... AGAIN. Some this my be a help.

  • Safari won't stop reformatting or reflowing page

Anyone else having problems with Safari constantly reformatting/reflowing pages with comments? For example, this page:
    http://money.cnn.com/2012/07/31/news/economy/drought-oil-us/index.htm?hpt=hp_t3
The page is full width then the slider appears indicating that the page is wider than the window. The slider continues to shrink until it is a circle. Then it disappears and the page is full width for a second. Then the thing starts all over again.
I have noticed this peculiar behavior on a couple of other websites in the comment sections as well.
    Safari 6.0 on OS 10.7.4.

    Carolyn:
Thanks for the suggestion but clearing cahes and cookies etc. doesn't help. The interface still lacks a "stop loading page" feature. Here I am a month later and the pages still hang and require quitting Safari. Can anyone load <http://www.allmusic.com/> regularly? I got it once a few weeks ago but something on their page generally messes with my Safari 5.1.
However on checking I find it only happens in my user account. I can switch to another account and that works fine on the same pages so it's a problem with something in my set of prefs, addins or other.
I'll report back if I can figure it out.

  • I updated my iPod Touch, and now the App Store won't stop crashing?

I just got a new update for my iPod touch. I had to delete a few apps to make space. Then, I proceeded downloading. I have the 4th generation and my iPod is about 6 months old (I had to get another one from my warranty because my other one got broken) Now, whenever I click on the App Store, it starts to load, and then it crashes. What do I do?

You might try clearing all the apps out of the recently used apps menu, or doing a two-finger reset (home and lock buttons until you see the Apple logo on the screen). I've seen similar posts that were resolved by doing that, but it hasn't worked for me. If you figure it out, I'd definitely be interested.

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and see if you can create a new, test library. If iPhoto can create a new libary then your current library is the culprit. In that case do the following:  make a temporary, backup copy of the library if you don't already have one  (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
It you can't create a new library it's an application issue or a system/user account issue.  To see which log into another user account on the Mac and try launching iPhoto.
If iPhoto works there then the prolem is with your account so post back with the results for further possible fixes.
If iPhoto doesn't work then it's either an applicartion problem or a system problem. In that case I'd first try reinstalling iPhoto before the system.

  • My 21.5 inch 2010 iMac won't stop crashing and rebooting when I put in my 8GB 1 piece Kingston RAMstick

I have the 21.5 inch 2010 iMac and I bought this Kingston 8GB 1 piece Ramstick (http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-1333MHz-KTA-MB1333-8G/dp/B007TGZ4UY/re f=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1401114006&sr=8-7&keywords=iMac+1333Mhz+RAM) and when I put it in my Mac, and I start up my Mac, it crashes and reboots itself. Then it happens over and over again. No matter what I do. Anyone have a solution?

If it is Kingston ValueRAM, that product has been troublesome since Intel Macs were introduced in 2006.

  • Just set up computer today - Firefox won't stop crashing!

I just recently bought this (refurbished) computer, after having to send back a different refurbished model that ended up having bad sectors. Well, things aren't looking too hopeful, especially with FF's constant crashing. I have no idea WHY it's doing this, but I can be doing anything from searching stuff up to being away from the computer - and without fail, FF crashes. Is there anyone who can help me with this?

No doubt you did discover [[firefox crashes]], unfortunately the Crash IDs do not indicate any easy fixes that I understand.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • Final Cut won't stop crashing

Recently started cutting a project using a combo of EX3 footage and 5D footage. Converted 5D footage to XDCAM using MPEG Streamclip and have been cutting fine. Then I loaded a few plugins into the mix- Neat Video (which is great) and a few free Wind Blur transitions from Too Much Too Soon.
Now I can't even get Final Cut to stay open for more than a few minutes before crashing. I checked with Neat Video tech support who have been very helpful and they said my logs showed that it was some other issue. I downloaded FCS Maintenance Pack to try to deal with Preferences and Cache, etc, but none of it seems to prevent Final Cut from crashing...

I have no idea if this will work on your system and your crash report is different than mine was but this is what cured my issues. Reinstalling FCP accomplished nothing for me. It was Qmaster and Compressor casuing my FCP to crash. Don't know why. Don't care.
LAST RESORT although this really is not a big deal, can't really hurt anything. You ought to make a clone of yoru system drive, just to be safe when doing anything like this.
Obtain your FCS3 installation disk package and launch the installer. Explore it so you are comfortable with the idea of installing Qmaster and Compressor only without any of the rest of the packages or content. Don't do anything yet. Quit the installer.
Find the Qmaster and Compressor applications and move them to the trash. Empty the trash. Launch the installer again. Install Qmaster and Compressor.
    Restart your Macintosh.
    Try to launch FCP.
