MBP screen black after using DVI to HDMI cable

Over a week ago I attempted to connect my MBP 2007 model to my samsung television with HDMI in. I have used this cable before but always have trouble getting it to work with this TV and my computer.
Well, I plugged it in and the screen on my computer went black and the image failed to appear on the TV despite tinkering with the settings.
When I unplugged the cable The image would not restore to my screen so I restarted it...same back screen. I took the battery out and pushed the power button to drain the juice and put it back in. No luck. Please help. Any usea? Seems to just be a software problem.
Sent from my iPhone, sigh

    Hi Maryan,
Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

  • MBP to an a/v receiver via dvi to hdmi cable, display not detected?

So as the title says, I'm trying to connect my MBP to a Sony str-dg510 a/v receiver in this order:
    MBP >
Mini Displayport to dvi connector (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4ODk2OTE ) >
    dvi to hdmi cable (http://www.amazon.com/DVI-HDMI-Cable-6ft-Male-Male/dp/B0002CZHN6 ) >
    Sony STR-dg510 AV Receiver >
    Analog TV.
And here's the issue: I'm not getting a second display detected at all. It is an analog connection from the AV receiver to the TV, and I've connected other laptops to the receiver just fine, albeit on a different input.
So I'm not sure where to go from here, the mini displayport to dvi works fine onto an apple display at work.
I also got an unlock message on the receiver at first and thought this may be the issue, so I got an optical audio cable similar to this: (http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-video/audio-cables/digital-audio-optical-tos link-cable/poft3ps/prodPOFT3PS.html )
And now the sound plays fine, but still no picture (and the unlock message is gone.)
    Any idea's?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Community Q62.
If it works fine on another TV but not directly with this TV, the problem is with your TV or your cables. Have you eliminated the cables.

  • MacBook 2007 black 13" would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable send audio to the TV?

I attached my macbook (2007 black 13") to my TV with a mini-DVI to VGA; would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable allow my audio to play through the TV? Wanted to ask before I purchased it. Thanks.

No. The black MacBooks don't send audio through HDMI, so you'd need to connect the audio separately.

  • Mini dvi to hdmi cable??where

i want to view the itunes visualizer on my 52" hd lcd sony bravia3. i would like to stay in the digital domain, thus use the hdmi connection. I searched everywhere. where can i get a mini dvi to hdmi cable. i saw mini dvi to dvi, is this the same connection minus the wire inside for audio?
imac G5 1.8mhz, and macbook intel core 2duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   wireless keyboard and mouse

what you want to do is get the apple mini div to dvi convertor and a dvi to hdmi cable from a good electical shop.
doing it this way for the video the screen shows the macbook as a box in the screen area, as in there will be a black box around the screen. this does this on my girlfriends lcd tv just a 27inch lg. though the tv only has auto detect for screen res. in my plasma, pioneer 46inch i get full screen but the top menu bar is only half showing, i havenot played with the settings on that yet.
for true digital or surround sound you are better to use an optical cable via the headphone jack. no point if u dont have a digital sound amp though

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a sony bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. The same set up has worked with three other, though different televisions. Any thoughts?

I am trying to hook my MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. I have used the same setup with three other TV's, each a different brand with no problem. Any ideas?

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.

  • Belkin DVI to HDMI cable on Apple Store

When I ordered my Mac Mini just now from the Apple Store, I also ordered the Belkin 6ft DVI to HDMI cable they offered.
However I just noticed on the Apple Store site there was one review of this cable, dated 1 Dec 08, and it states:
"Unfortunately the graphics card on the mini wont power the screen even in low resolutions."
Is the above statement true? Have I ordered the wrong cable?

It should work. Remember that review was for the last generation of mini's where the gpu was an intel model. The mini you bought uses the nvidia 9400m.
I'd worry about your monitor/tv being compatible with the mini heh.

  • Is it possible to buy a mini-dvi to HDMI cable?

    Hi,
At the minute I'm pulling my hair out!!
Is it possible to buy a cable to connect my 20" Intel iMac via it's mini dvi socket at the back, to a large widescreen lcd tv via HDMI socket on the tv?
I have telephoned numerous companies on the net and they have never heard of a mini dvi socket (like the one on the back of the imac)!! Apple say I need a mini-dvi to dvi female cable but of course they don't sell them.
Guys what do I need, and where would I get it? I've already bought a HDMI-A Male to DVI-D Male cable but it doesn't fit the mac, is there an adaptor I can buy or do I need a new cable also?
    Help really appreciated.

I misunderstood you. I thought you had a link to a mini-DVI to HDMI cable. That's why I asked for the link.
You can use the adapter you linked to and get a DVI to HDMI cable locally and it will work for you.
Sorry about the confusion on my part.

  • Can a mini DVI Display port work with a DVI to HDMI Cable?

I just  bought  a Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter Along with DVI to HDMI Cable for my Mac. I plugged the adapter Into my Imac then I plugged DVI end of the other cable into the adapter when Plugged HDMI connection into my HD TV nothing happened.

I'll second that, you need the > Mini DP to HDMI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.) and a good HDMI cable.

  • Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

The mini dvi on the MacBook will only support video, in order to get audio you'll need to a cable from the sound out port to the sound in port on the TV.

  • Samsung T240HD Reboots mini when using DVI or HDMI

    Hi there,
My new Samsung T240HD works pretty well when I connect it to the Mac Mini using a DVI-VGA adapter (currently 1920 x 1200 60 Hz, Millions) but if I try to use either DVI-DVI or DVI-HDMI the monitor will appear and run perfectly from startup - but then the mini will reboot after 30mins or less.
I downloaded and installed SwitchResX, but I wasn't even sure what the problem I was trying to solve was so I removed SwitchResX and went back to the VGA solution.
Im quite keen to use the DVI or HDMI inputs if its possible to do so without causing the rebooting of the machine.
    I would appreciate any responses
    Cheers

That is quite a strange problem. Since you point out the mini is sharing a powerboard/powerstrip with the Samsung, as a trouble shooting measure, I would try plugging the mini into a completely seperate circuit. In fact, get the longest power extension cord you have and try plugging the mini into an outlet from a seperate room, if possible, to increase the chances of being on a completely different branch from the fuse/breaker box. See if that makes the problem go away and then, if it does, start narrowing things down by moving the plug points around, trying different combinations and perhaps trying a different powerboard.
A video output port is not a power port, per se. In other words, it is impartial with respect to the size of the display that is attached. A larger display should not cause a greater power draw from the mini, at least not of any consequence. Plenty of people attach monitors and TV's that are 24" or larger and I have never heard of that causing the mini's power supply to "crow bar" to protect itself from an over-power condition.
It could well be that the Samsung has a defect of some kind and you may need to return it for another. That's something to consider.

  • Screen black after mountain lion install

After install, the screen connected to the original video card is black, other 2 screens connected to evga gtx 285 are ok. do i need a new video card?

I have the same problem over here!
I installed the ML and after that, my BRAND NEW MacBook Pro with Retina Display rebooted.
The only problem is that the display is black! I tried to reboot a few times holding the power button with no success, only to have an idea. I connected an HDMI cable to my TV and I could see the login screen and work nice.
But c'mon, i bought a laptop to take it wherever i want. Now I can only get the image on my TV with the HDMI cable.
Does anyone knows how to put the image back on the screen? I tried everything from rebooting and taking out the HDMI cable to searching on the Settings>Monitors for something..
Thank you in advance for any answer.

  • Screen black after sleep startup and won't turn off w/ power button?

I have a Powerbook G4 and hardly ever turn it off, till lately.
My computer started turning itself off after I would open it and wake it up from sleep mode. It would flash the screen quickly and then go black. All efforts to turn it off with the power button failed. I had to remove the battery and disconnect the power cord for about 2 minutes until it eventually shut down. I have not had this issue since I have been turning it off after every use, but was wondering if this was a sign that something was going out on my computer?
    Thanks!

Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.
There's more to try but let's go a bit at a time.

  • Nvidia 8600gt with DVI to HDMI cable on Samsung 32'' screen

hi, got setup arch on a friend's pc with the title's featured for viewing...although that is viewable we cannot make it work properly (with the same quality as it is on windows...which is day and night...), is there any options which we can work on them for getting the best quality because of the connection? i tried from nvidia-settings but i cannot find any option for "cable changing"..what should i change to make this work properly? (the current display is 1024x768. he wants big letters for easier reading..)
    ty in advanced

I have nvidia 8400m gs and hda-intel, hdmi just does not work properly. The resolution is by default wrong and does not fit into the screen. If I use 1920x1080 the text is almost unreadable. Further, hdmi+audio does not work at all. I use nvidia-xconfig to set up X and NVIDIA X Server Settings in gnome to choose the TV screen. I have a 32'' Samsung flat screen tv.
VGA cable works for video and sound with an audio cable from laptop headphones to TV PC in. The resolution is quite ok - 1360-768 and sound works thru the tv speakers.
What I have found googling is quite contradictory. But it seems nvidia hdmi on linux is not yet fully implemented. ATI Radeon on the other hand seems to work better.
As the hdmi cables are quite expensive, especially the gold plated ones, I would discourage linux users for the moment to have too high expectations on getting hdmi+audio to work for nvidia cards, at least not on hp pavilion notebooks. It might also be a question of hp notebooks with nvidia not having any connector between the graphics card and the audio card, as the audio is being transmitted over the hdmi port. However, HP is quite uninterested in support, and plucking asunder a laptop is not that appealing to find out audio chips and eventually missing connectors between sound card and video card.
To sum it up, vga is better for the moment.
