MBP screen flashes and freezes; not recognizing HD?
Earlier today my Macbook Pro froze up and the screen filled with these vertical columns of short, squiggly lines. I couldn't do anything with it so I used the power button to power down and when I started up I got the message saying I need to restart the computer, which I kept doing and it made no difference. I did some research and found of this is called a kernel panic and I did a few things suggested to someone in another post: resetting pram, using fsck (it worked for a little while after I did that), booting from the OS disc and verifying the disk. The thing that worked best and consistently was booting from the OS disc, going to startup and selecting "Macintosh HD." Once I did that it let me log on, although I couldn't do much before I got the message again. Currently, the only way I can get into my computer is to use the disk and select my HD.
When this started I was using the Rosetta Stone 3 program, which I'd just updated. I'm guessing this might be the problem, or maybe it's just a coincidence. I believe I read somewhere that an update may cause this. Is there anything else that can be done? This came at the worst time, just before I planned to start using Time Machine.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or what I can do? It's under AppleCare, but I'm hoping there's something I can do short of getting something replaced.
Thanks for the link. I'll have to look for the Apple Hardware disk after I get home.
There's a log from 9 o'clock this morning, when my computer wasn't even on and before I was up. Does that mean there was already a problem? Here's that one:

My Mac glitches after startup with screen flashing and freezing up.
Why does my Mac begin to flash then freeze after start up?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Any change?
Have you blown the dust out lately? -
I have a 2008 Mac Pro, which has served me well since I got it, at least until a day or two ago. At that time, it started exhibiting sporadic black flickering on screen, paired with freezing. At first, everything would freeze except the audio, which would continue playing uninterrupted, and after a minute or so the system would unfreeze like nothing happened. Now, though, it seems to have gotten worse; the system doesn't seem to recover after a flickering episode, and even the audio will get stuck into a one second loop after a while.
I tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC. When that didn't work, I tried restarting into Lion Recovery mode with Command-R. For some reason, that sent me right to a reinstall screen, but it didn't matter, because the screen started flickering and the system froze almost immediately after startup. I'm pretty sure that what it froze in was a separate recovery partition, so that should rule out any software issue. I'm guessing that my video card is fried, but I'd like to see what others think; I'd like to avoid buying a video card that I don't need.2009 Mac Pro 3,1, GeForce 8800GT, 6GB ram.
I have recently had the same problems. Screen flickering, tiling and freezing previous to this video settings I've had for a long time just changed. I am not sure if it is my monitor or graphics card. My graphics card was replaced once already. This is acting a little different this time.
I also reset pram am still running 10.6.8 -
MBP 13" Screen Flickers and Freezes After Upgrading HDD
Hi There,
I have seen on here and a few other forums that people are having issues with graphics cards or overheating that is making the MBP screen flicker and freeze.
Mine has been fine until yesterday when I installed a new Seagte 1tb HDD. It works ok, but every now and then the screen starts to flicker, half of it goes black and the system freezes. Sometimes it's just for a few minutes, but sometimes I need to do a hard reset by holden the power button down for 5 seconds.
Here are the details:
MBP 5,5 13" (2008 I think - Can't remember)
Boot ROM Version:
MBP55.00AC.B03
SMC Version (system):
1.47f2
Version 10.6.8
2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
8gb 1067 Mhz DDR3 (Just upgraded, but before the hard drive and no issues)
1TB Seagate Momentus SATA HDD
As mentioned, I upgraded the RAM a week or so ago and it has been running fine. I put the new hard drive in last night and after a few hours, the flickering started.
I cloned the hard drive using SuperDuper and it all started up fine.
So far, I have verified and repaired permissions, checked SMART status and run a SMART Utility diagnostic. All comes back ok.
I cleared the PRAM and installed smcfan control as another forum with similar issues said it was a overheating problem and running the fan control program should fix it. I did that at 8am this morning and it has run great all day. Come 5.30pm, the flickering started and then it froze.. GREAT!!!!
It's so frustrating, I was really looking forward to having my MBP upgraded and running fast again.
Any ideas or tips would be very welcome.
Thanks in advance.set old HD. If problem will gone - you have weakened power supply or internal power converters. Yours new HD draw more power during spinup or something - so voltage on internal bus lowers and memory or videocard freaks.
5.30 PM looks like a time when there begins a lot of load on city energy grid - so voltage in wall socket goes a bit unstable, it may also add to problem.
if problem is gone when you are on battery power - its power supply. If it persists or get worse when on battery - its internal power convertors. -
Screen flashes and then goes black after CPU load
Yesterday morning I upgraded my MacBook Pro 6,2 (Mid 2010) to OS X Lion. Since then I've been having issues while performing CPU-not-too-intensive tasks. Every once in a while my screen flashes for a split second and then turns completely black. The MBP is unresponsive so I'm forced to shut it down using the power button.
At first i though this was a Lion issue. However, it has happened again just now while I was on Windows through BootCamp. I was checking my e-mail and performing some other mundane tasks for about an hour, and then while trying to copy some files to an external Hard Drive my screen flashed and went black.
Hardware issue then??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's already happened 4-5 times right when I pressed Cmd+D to bookmark a site on Safari. What the heck? That isn't even a CPU load.

My MacBook was acting weird like sometimes I would log on and I wouldn't be able to type my password for a couple seconds, but it usually logged in after that. Then I left my computer open after installing the recent update after that all my applications were not responding. So I shut it down, when I turned it back on about an hour later it went to this loading screen and then to the login like usual. After I tried logging in a white screen flashed and it went back to the login/ password screen like nothing happened. Any ideas on what happened and what I can do to fix it?
Reinstall OS X;
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

Thanks, but I've checked those articles out already. I drained the battery and finally got the needs charge (battery w/red line + arrow pointing to a charging bolt), I plugged the USB into the laptop and held down the start key +home key until I saw the apple logo. However, it still was not recognized by itunes. It's been plugged in for over an hour now and the screen is cycling apple logo/low battery (battery w/red line)/and black screen.

Ipod screen flashes and chirps ???
I have a 20GB click wheel Ipod. Last night it just started to make a high pitch sound and then changed to a screen flashing and chirping sound simultaneously? The flashing and chirping continued and I could not do anything. It was basically frozen, then I connected it to the fire wire port and the apple logo appeared and it seemed to fix itself. The battery was dead, I don't know if that was a symptom. I restored the Ipod and I'm waiting to see if it happens again when the battery is dead. Any help/advice would be appreciated.
Welcome to the Apple Discussions, Derek Skaalen!
I'd get a replacement ASAP. That doesn't sound good.

Why is my screen flashing and distorting?
The monitor on my Mac Book Pro is flashing and freezing. Even had what appeared as raindrops frozen on the screen.
Had to close with on off switch, came back without raindrops, but still flashing intermittently.
Am I losing monitor or have I caught a bug ?It is either resetting or updating. If the device went through the full restart and is working now then you are OK to use it.
If it is still on the apple logo you may have to hold the on/off button and the large Home button in the middle at the same time until the little apple shows and then release both buttons. This will refresh your device.

Hi,
nswint, it seems that we have to do as you described.
Corey, I have the remote desktop client installed on a iPad Air, I can input capital letters via the on-screen keyboard within the remote desktop session that we can activate by a tap on the keyboard icon in the connection bar.
Thanks.

My daughters ipod touch has been disabled because of a wrong passcode. After 2 days of trying to get into Itunes, it will not help without a passcode and is not recognizing it as a device even though the computer is recognizing the USB. I know I have to do a complete recovery, but can I do this without Itunes (or Icloud)?
You cannot do this without itunes on your computer
