Forgot to mention, downloading a firmware update is not possible unless one has another way of starting the machine. (I'm posting this on my iPad.)

    Try resetting SMC and NVRAM:

  • Computer shuts itself down after about 30 seconds

Ive had my computer since 2008 and it has ran perfectly fine untill a few moths ago where the fan just started making loud noises and just generally over working even when the computer isnt hot. Suddenly a month or two ago it started shutting itself down after about 10 minutes and it just got progressivly worse and it wont even get too the start up screen. Is there any idea on what causes this or how i can fix it because I really dont have the money too purchase a new computer and it would save ALOT of hassle too get it repaired,
    Thanks, Jack

This is usually a sign that your headphones are not plugged all the way in.  Make sure you cannot see any silver still showing from the headphone's plug.  It may require a little extra force to get the headphones to become fully inserted.  You should hear a sort of clicking noise indicating that they have been fully seated.
Also check the headphone port from a damage or debris.

  • TS1884 How do you cope with a system that shuts itself down after a safe boot progress bar is completed?

How do you resolve a problem with a system that shuts itself down after a safe reboot and when the progress bar is completed? Thanks.

Thanks for you response - the honest answer is I don't know, not being particularly IT literate. I do know however that I'm running Maverick if that is of any help?
I also tried the Command R route, along with holding some other keys as per the Apple troubleshooting guide, but no luck. My wife pointed out though that the system was running slowly over the last few days and we had quite a lot of the 'spinning beach ball' before being able to undertake tasks.
Lastly, I inserted my start up disk bit as the system is unable to start I'm now unable to retrieve it. All-in-all a real pain.
    Appreciate any advice. Many thanks.

  • MBP shuts itself down during sleep

My MBP shuts itself down durning sleep... or, stays black when I open the lid after sleep.  The hard drive is on,  but no key pressing will get it running.  I have to hold down the power button, til it clicks off; then press it again to boot up from scratch.
Today, I booted up Console and under messages  found this:
7/28/12 4:56:21.519 PM Firewall: Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 192.168.254.1:64508 from 192.168.254.254:53

    7/28/12 4:57:07.000 PM kernel: macx_swapon SUCCESS
is this the signature of Trojan?
    How do I correct this?

I'm having almost the same problem and I can't figure it out either. I put my computer to sleep and when I wake it up, the screen comes on with my full desktop, but everything is frozen. I can't open anything. I can't even force quit. I get no response from my mouse (other than being able to move it around- sometimes) and everything on the dock is unresponsive. I did disc repair– no problems reported. I repaired disc permissions– a few glitches, but all taken care of and okay. I restarted the computer, put it to sleep and same thing all over. Should I worry?

  • Brand new pro shuts itself down after 30 seconds

    Help please!
I bought Mac Pro two months ago and have used it mainly for pages, internet browsing and watching movies from my external hard drive. Since I've had it, it has gone to sleep (black screen) after just a few minutes of not touching the keyboard and takes almost a minute to wake up again when i try to rouse it by touching a key or space bar or use mousepad - really annoying if writing or presenting a lecture!
Now, it shuts itself down about 30 seconds after switching it back on again. It opens up to a black screen with the Apple loading sign, the browser appears with 'chrome wasn't shut down properly' and then the computer switches itself off again.  I can't get it to stay on long enough to check any settings. It's only two months old and has maximum storage.
I didnt purchase any additional virus software - could it be a virus? Or just a faulty machine?
Also - I bought it in the US with extended warranty but no additional insurance.. I live in the uk but am currently in India and so cant take it to an apple store. Am I covered with warranty?
    Thanks.

    - could it be a virus?
    No.
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 shuts itself down after printing..

Not sure whether I'm in the right place to post this..
In my workplace, we just bought some new iMacs for design class. They are a 2GHz with Intel Core Duo, and has 1GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, and running Mac OSX 10.4.8.
The Photoshop CS2 is version 9.0
I've config-ed the five new iMacs so they can print to a printer, using IP printing. Problem is, most of the time after the students sends the document they want to print to the printer, Photoshop CS2 just shuts itself down. Then the dialog box saying 'the software just unexpectedly quit' appears.
It is confusing me, because our older iMacs (that's not an Intel-based) doesn't have this problem, at all.
is it something to do with CS2 compatibility with Intel-based Macs? or something else.. what needs to be done to stop this annoying problem?

    Meru

  • Iphone 4 will not power up. shut itself down after recording video and attemptimg to send via mms.

Iphone 4 shut itself down about 10 hours ago after I recorded a new video and attempted to send the video via mms.  Tried many times to power up using standard power up procedures.  I noticed that it seemed to be getting hot.  I removed the protective cover and the actual phone was very warm.  even after 2 hours it appeared to be overheating.  has not been dropped or gotten wet.  any solutions?  has this happened to anyone else before?

Hmmm, press and hold (about 10sec) the Home and Power button until you see the Apple logo. That restarts your iPhone and should fix your problem.

  • MBP shuts itself down

I've had my MacBook Pro for about 3 weeks, and today as i was using it on a 45% battery charge, my MBP completely shut down (it was not in sleep mode) and it would not turn on again for about 5 minutes. Has anyone experienced this?

Mine did the same thing the day AFTER I put in my request for a new battery.
Like said above, it's probably a faulty battery... check your battery to that link, and i'm sure you're within the replacement.
If you're from New York City, not just the state of NY, take it to one of the apple stores at 5th ave or SoHo and they should be able just to swap it out in minutes - just call first.
If not, it takes roughly 2-5 days to get the replacement battery by mail, I think I got mine in 3 to 4.
In the meantime try to limit your battery use as much as possible. Even though it seems consistent that it will stop at 45%, it's truly random and could happen at even higher and lower percentages, so if you like your work, I'd keep that AC cable connected!
Good luck, get that battery replaced ASAP!

  • MBP Shuts itself down if moved

This is a problem I have just started experiencing today. If I happen to move my Macbook Pro even the slightest bit, it will often power off. Also, when I try to restart it, it will not restart unless it is elevated a certain way (having the left side down lower than the right seems to be one of the positions that will allow it to turn on). If it doesn't restart, the hard drive will power on for a few seconds, then shut down.
I have not dropped my MBP, and this started happening a few hours ago (it wasn't do this at all this morning). Any idea what is going on?

Ok, the last bit of information I can add to this is that the only way to be sure the computer doesn't auto-shutdown, it has to be placed on a perfectly flat surface, such as a desk. If anyone else knows what might be wrong (my guess right now is something is wrong with the logic board), please let me know, otherwise I hope an Apple Store can help.
Assuming I do need to have my MBP repaired, what is the normal expected turnaround time?

  • Shutting itself down after short start up

Tiger 10.4.9... G5 iMac (non-intel)gray screen comes up for about 30 seconds then shuts down. Breaker was shut off without turning computer off which has caused this behavior.
In the past, I mounted the computer as a Target drive on the desktop of another computer, ran Disk Warrior on a partition and everything was fine.
This time, however it didn't work. I tried running the Disk Aid from the desktop of the other hd, but it couldn't complete due to some service error.
Is there a unix command for some type of repairing permissions I can try from a command line prompt with a Target drive?
    I wouldn't know the correct syntax/path.

Does Avast put a toolbar into the browser window? Maybe if you removed that, it would help? Why should an antivirus add toolbars into browsers anyway?
Does the crashing happen if you are in Firefox safe mode?

  • My iPhone 4S, completely shut down for about an hour and won't turn on, any help?

I am quite worried due to the fact I have over 400 photos.

    Try this First...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...

  • HT203167 My iTunes Match does not work, it stops after the first step and won't do anything else!!!

Hello, I purchased iTunes Match for my new iPhone five and it is intended to move the music from my computer to my other computer, but it stopped working on my MacBook Pro, it stopped after the first step. So, my question is, can iTunes Match work if the iTunes in question has other accounts attached to it, of not, can I get a refund on a service that does not work?

I am having a similar issue with iTunes Match. It keeps hanging up on the same number of files (11035 of 15455) during STEP 2. I've tried signing out, re-opening iTunes, re-booting, etc. Still comesup stuck for hours. What I also don't understand is why the "iCloud Status" option in "View/View Options" disappears intermittently. It was there when I first booted up this morning and I reviewed all my music files to see if there were any "errors" and there werne't any. But after Match gets stuck on the same file niumber (11035) I 've signed out and re-booted and now the "iCloud Status" check box is missing from "View Options" (only the "iCloud Download" option remains present all the time. Please help. (I've also checked to make sure all the music files are within the suggested bit rate parameters and file type - This is also a brand new iMac out of the box). Running out of troubleshooting ideas and beginning to think this service just doesn't work well.
